That's cool, I didn't know they allowed you to do that! Penn is my second choice so I might look into that if I get in there and not UF. In state tuition would be very very nice.

Haven't decided yet if I'll be applying again this cycle and be with all of you! I was accepted to SGU and Ross, waitlisted at VMRCVM, Auburn, and LSU. Trying to figure out if I'll be going to SGU or applying again. But good luck everyone!

That's really cool that they let you get IS tuition that way. I had only heard of schools that let you get IS tuition after attending one year of vet school, but I bet it would be nice to get all four years instead. If you decide to apply for the VMD/PhD - good luck!!

Thank you! I had no idea, either. There isn't a HUGE difference between IS and OOS tuition at Penn, but it's enough that I'm going for it 😉
 
Good luck to everyone. I got in on my second try. Just dont do what I did and realize august 28th the application was to be submitted on september 1st. I did the whole thing between that time plus moved, went to a wedding, and got a puppy. Fortunately I had asked for my elors beginning of august and those were already all in.
 
Wow, so this thread now exists... Super excited to be applying this cycle! VMR, NC state, Kansas, Illinois, Ohio, Missouri, and Tennessee should be the ones I am applying to 🙂
 
Same here. Excited, nervous, and stressed at the same time. I'm a first-time applicant and will be applying to TAMU, LSU, Oklahoma State U, SGU and Ross. I really hope to get in TAMU(IS).
 
Can anyone post a link to the thread with all the schools that let you get instate tuition after a year? I can't seem to find it...

Just make sure you know all the hoops and loops you have to get through to make it to residency before you apply

When did you decide to defer? I'm #5 on the wait list for penn c/o 2018 as of April 15th. I haven't called again because I don't want to annoy them.

I'd kinda been toying with the idea since I'd gotten the acceptance phone call but I wasn't sure if I really wanted to wait a year. When I realized I could become a PA resident AND get more lab volunteering hours for the VMD/PhD I figured I should go for it. I've been job hunting for the last few months. And congrats! I've got my fingers crossed for you! 🙂

Edit: I haven't turned in my deferment form yet (due June 1st). I'm not sure if they'll take someone off the waitlist if I defer or if the class will just be one smaller. I hope you get off of it!!!

June is still plenty early enough to inform someone from the waitlist, they will do their best to fill all seats for the class.

I found last year at application time.. that summer was a great time to do some last minute animal/vet experience, so go for it if you get the chance!

Although VMCAS isn't open yet, I think its never too early to start compiling the hours for your animal/vet/research experience- definitely makes it easier to input and you're less likely to forget stuff.
 
I'm a non-trad student, first time applicant to TAMU (and possibly LSU and OSU). Good luck everyone!

When is everyone looking to turn in the app? I seem to recall my med school friends in undergrad turning theirs in by August...is it smart to wait to accrue as many hours as possible and wait till Sept or better to get it in early? Anyone know?
 
I'm planning on turning in my app early September and I'll overestimate my hours so they better reflect what I will have by the deadline.

Medical school applications are different in that it's more favorable to apply early. For vet schools, it doesn't matter when you submit your application, as long as it's on time 🙂 For your experiences, you can always include "ongoing" or "2010-present" to indicate that you're still acquiring hours. If you have in the hundreds of hours, I don't think a handful extra is really going to make a big difference (unless it's in a field you haven't experienced yet, for example).
 
I might try that ongoing trick - I have almost a month in August off that I'll be using to acquire hours in (hopefully) large animal vet experience, but I'd like to submit the app itself before September in case of missing documents or letters or what have you. You can go back and edit hours after submitting? Is that true?
 
Possible c/0 2019 applicant here... I'm currently waitlisted at Minnesota and Iowa, but I don't think I'm going to get in. Time to start planning for this application cycle, I suppose! I'm going to re-apply at Iowa, and probably to the other Midwestern schools (Ohio, Purdue, Mizzou, and maybe Michigan and Wisconsin). I have to apply to schools where OOS tuition isn't crazy... I'm from NH and we don't have a vet school or any contract schools, which sucks but what can ya do?

Submitting the application in September is a safe bet for possibly having issues since the applications aren't technically due until October.

I'm not sure if editing hours after submission is possible - might want to ask VMCAS directly. However, some people will submit an update to schools with any significant additions to their applications (which could include more experience hours if there were a lot of them and/or in a new field you hadn't gotten hours in yet). Not that you should update them with little amounts or very frequently, but I don't think one big update would be frowned upon.

Putting "ongoing" or "to present" isn't even a trick, just a way of indicating that you're still accruing hours. It's pretty common that applicants are still accruing hours, either through work or just ongoing interest, so it isn't a huge deal 🙂

There's really no reason you need to submit that early. Usually just a few days early in case of technical issues with the submission or payment is sufficient. You have to be on top of making sure your transcripts and evals and everything are submitted on time, regardless of when your application gets turned in (ie, one does not affect the other).

The only thing you need to submit early is your transcripts. VMCAS had a "suggested deadline" for those. That's how they did it last year anyway because you were no longer supposed to send your transcripts directly to the schools - just to VMCAS. Other than that submit your application a few days before the deadline in case you have any technical issues like someone else said.

The schools themselves usually send an email saying that they have received all of your documents or that you are missing something.

Someone can correct me if I am wrong, as it has been a couple years now since I applied, but if I recall correctly from last year didn't VMCAS require you to submit your application before they would verify transcripts? So even if you got your transcripts in by September 2nd, submitted your application on September 20th, VMCAS would not begin verifying those transcripts until September 20th. (Makes sense as there is no point to verify transcripts for a person that has yet to pay the fees or submit the application). And they were telling people that it could take up to 30 days to verify transcripts, so submitting on September 20th could mean that your application would not arrive at your schools until later in October (the application would not be considered late, it would just arrive later for the school to begin reviewing it).

That's what I thought, which is why I was planning on applying by September 1st at the latest. If I'm remembering correctly, you have to have your transcripts, at least one eLOR, and the application fee in before they start verifying. Unless they let you pay the application fee before you submit the application, it seems to me that you have to submit before they'll verify.

Yeah, that may be different now that VMCAS does the whole transcript assessing thing. Not sure how much it matters in the long run though, because the schools are probably going to be receiving applications throughout the month of October then. And, at least for all schools I'm aware of (these new schools with their weird admissions procedures may be different), it doesn't matter when they get your application, as long as it is in on time. You may get offered an interview a little later than someone whose application was received earlier, depending on how the school's process works, but your application is still going to get judged the same way as everyone else's. That being said, for most people it probably doesn't make a huge difference it you submit at the beginning of September or the beginning of October in terms of experiences you can put down, unless you have something really big going on in September (ie, starting a really cool new job you want to list or something...) One thing to keep in mind though, is that if they don't start reviewing transcripts until at least one eLOR is in, you may be waiting anyway. All of my eLORs were submitted in the last week or so before the deadline. I think procrastinating on eLORs is fairly common, particularly for those who are used to writing a lot of them and don't see any reason to get them turned significantly earlier than the deadline.

That's why I gave my evaluators the September 1st date 😉 personally I just want to have everything on my end done before I go back to school, so I don't have to worry about it
 
It blows my mind that applications open for the next class in a few weeks. This hell really is going by quickly....

I've also been lurking around for a year now...finally ready to apply
I'm an LVT in NY and have my BS in biology. I work for a DVM dentist...we just did two root canals on a lioness a couple weeks ago! Pretty darn cool! Anyways, good luck to all of you. I'm dreading/secretly ecstatic for this application process. Anyone know where I can find what constitutes a well thought out/written personal statement?

It's too bad NH got rid of the contacts a few years ago. Otherwise we could have been going to Cornell or Tufts with IS tuition. I was even told that many many years ago NH had a contract with Ohio as well. Wish that were still true. At least Ohio lets you become IS after the first year. Good luck with waitlists and the next application cycle.

It's such a bummer! And I didn't know that Ohio let you get IS tuition after the first year... I am definitely going to have to apply there for the next application cycle.
 
I'll be a first time applicant. I'm terrified and know I probably won't get in. This decision was somewhat last minute... I was prevet for several yrs then began working at a vet clinic and realized it's nothing like what you'd expect so I turned my back on the idea of vet med. I honesty never stop thinking about it though. It's like I know deep down this is my calling and I am finally ready to face the music.

I did, but it was almost a year back. Only one person responded and said my stats look decent, I just haven't done much "vet-related" since then. I've done other stuff- research, leadership positions in clubs, TA labs, etc.
 
That other stuff could bolster your application. Diversity is good in applicants.

That's good too though! I don't think that should be a problem at all - schools like to see research experience! And you may also want to get involved in veterinary research, so you have that experience under your belt.

I am not too hopeful for this year either, in fact I am terrified, but I'll try anyways.

Yea, I'm hoping it might make me a little more diverse? Lol I am only applying to one school, uga. Not an easy one to get into! But you never know if you don't try!
 
I should also probably mention I'm interested in some of the non-traditional vet careers.... Public health, pathology, etc.

it will be when i apply... we are moving up there in august. my husband got accepted to grad school at uga.
