C/O 2019 Applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
it will be when i apply... we are moving up there in august. my husband got accepted to grad school at uga.
Oh ok, cool. Just make sure you are really familiar with their residency requirements, I know for some of the schools it can get kind of complicated.

yeah, i'm somewhat confused as to whether i'll be considered a resident or not. i THINK so. so we move up there in august, and vet school starts the following august. it states on their website that you have to have lived in georgia for 12 consecutive months prior to starting vet school to be considered a resident. BUT, it also says you cannot have moved to georgia to attend college for those 12 months. i will be taking 2 transient courses at uga to finish up my undergrad. so things are kind of fuzzy there. i would probably need to talk to someone in person, after i move up there. i would imagine id be considered a georgia resident, but i don't know for sure..

You might be considered resident through your husband, whom I would assume would be considered a resident. But I would definitely talk to someone once you arrive.

Hey guys!! I'll be reapplying this year! (I'm WL at Illinois, but not holding out hope)....
So who's applying where?!?!

My current list is:
OhioState, Tufts, Illinois, RVC, Edinburgh, Glasgow, SGU

I'm contemplating Mizzou NCstate, and Auburn

ahhhh, true! perhaps as a dependent or something. yeah, ill for sure talk to them. its a funky situation for sure lol

I don't know much about those, except auburn. I've heard amazing things about auburn!

I did, but it was almost a year back. Only one person responded and said my stats look decent, I just haven't done much "vet-related" since then. I've done other stuff- research, leadership positions in clubs, TA labs, etc.

Hey! You should really post your stats, but if your problem is not having enough vet experience, in my opinion it doesn't hurt to try. I mean, unless you really don't have the funds to apply. But I had verrrrrry low vet experience hours. So low that I'm actually surprised I got in. I didn't know it was low until I came onto this site and saw how many hours people normally have. I was kind of uneducated in the vet application area....ha. But I had like, at most, 100 hours of vet experience. And it was small animal. And I got into Minnesota on my first try.
I had a lot of experience in other areas, student leadership, employment, academic, and when I went to my interview, I was really good at being able to articulate how those areas would relate to vet med and the questions they asked me.
I suppose if some of your other areas (academic, interview skills...) are lacking, maybe hold off on your application. But you should really post your stats to see if they are actually low, or if you just think they are.

Ok, well here goes then!

My current cumulative GPA is 3.55 and my major (biology) gpa is 3.7

I have not taken the GRE yet (I know I need to soon).

My vet experience: ~20 hrs at the emergency vet clinic;
~1500 hours at small animal vet (I worked as a vet assistant for a year).

Animal experience: ~800 at a grooming shop as a bather;
~1000 at my current job- a grooming/boarding facility. I've bathed dogs and worked as a kennel tech.
~ 8 hrs of working at a local wolf preserve. Socialized wolf pups, did general cleanup at the preserve site.
-no idea how many hrs, but summer of 2012 I hand nursed a litter of kittens from birth. Their mom was a stray and it was a TNR procedure so I offered to nurse them all.
-again, not sure about hrs, but I've done random pet sitting jobs for several years.
-don't know if this counts, but pet owner for 15+ yrs

Research exp:
- I am the lead investigator of colony morphologies for bacteria taken from the Gulf of Mexico from the BP oil spill. Have been doing this since January.

Leadership:
-Vice President of AWIS(association for women in science)
- secretary of asm (American society for microbiology)
- prevet club- I was the activities chairperson and then Vice President

Other:
-I aquacultured phytoplankton and zooplankton for our schools marine research facility for almost a year.

- worked at a pizza place for 2.5 years during end of high school/beginning of undergrad.

-I have 2 autoimmune diseases of my thyroid, and I think it's worth mentioning in my personal statement, but I'm not sure.

Let me know what you think. I know my stats are not "bad" but I'm planning on applying to only one school. I just know how insanely competitive it is so I'm trying to be realistic.

No clue, the site says May, so by Saturday? xD

I saw somewhere on the AAVMC website that VMCAS opens on June 5.

Not the VMCAS, she's talking about the book that has the individual school's admission requirements.

Hello everyone! I am looking to apply this upcoming cycle for the class of 2019 and like most individuals I am extremely nervous about my chances of getting into Veterinary School. The Schools that I am looking to possibly apply to are: Kansas, Illinois, Ohio, Virginia, Missouri, Iowa, and Massachusetts. I actually just graduated from college a whole year early (It happened rather unexpectedly) and I emailed each of the schools asking if they had an recommendations on how to spend my newly discovered free time. After looking over my resume and transcripts the consensus from most of the schools was to simply acquire some more hours and focus on improving my lousy GRE score. Anyhow if you guys could give me some input I would be extremely grateful!!!!

Cummulative GPA: 3.65

GRE scores: I really bombed my first attempt, so I am scheduled to retake them...I made the mistake of not studying until a week before, I have since changed my ways and have been studying for months now.
Vet Experience:
Large Animals (~200)
Small Animals (~250 hours)
Wild Animals (~150 hours)
**I am currently working with another local small animal vet so estimated (~150 hours)

Animal Experience
Rehabilitation of Various Species of Wild Animals: bears, deer, owls, hawks, falcons, beavers, and many others (~1500 hours)
^^^My father has been a Game Warden for my entire life^^^

Extracurricular/Academic:
Dean's List Every Semester
Honor's Program
Student Ambassador
Mercy Presidential Scholarship
Biology Fellowship
English Fellowship
Supplemental Instructor for Organic Chemistry I and II
Vice-President of Colleges Against Cancer Club
Writer for college's student newspaper
Member of the National Society of Leadership and Success
Part time job as a Cashier at a local grocery store (~20 hours a week)

Wow, I can't believe it is time for the class of 2019 already. I haven't even started my first year yet! So a little advice (and some things I wish I would have known)........
1. Take your GRE as early as possible so you can retake it if needed. I took mine too late and had to settle for a low score. I think this is especially important for people who have low GPA's. If you have a lower GPA, you will want a higher GRE. I had a high GPA, so I did okay with a low GRE

2. Start your VMCAS early so you can review as much as possible before you submit it. September 15 is "priority deadline" (or something like that). I had no idea what this meant at the time, so I thought I had waited to late. In a panic, I had a few people review it then I just submitted everything. Don't do that, just take your time. If you go past September 15, you are okay. However, I do suggest submitting before that just in case they have issues with your application.

3. Try to get as much experience as you can in different areas of veterinary medicine. For example, I had experience with large animal, small animal, and exotics. I had very little experience with equine or research. To make your application more competitive, try to have at least a little experience in every area.

4. Take a light course load for the fall semester (for those who are still getting their undergrad degree). This may not work out for everyone, but I am thankful that I only took 2 classes the semester I applied. I had more time to focus on my application during August and September, without having to worry about classes.

If you have any questions, just ask!! I haven't started classes yet, but I can help with the application process!

Great idea and wonderful advice!

Here's another one:
5. Don't be afraid to send someone your Personal Statement from the PS thread (And start on your PS as early as possible!). We signed up for a reason, so don't be afraid you will bother us or we will judge you harshly, we would love to read over your PS and give you our thoughts 🙂

Good luck to everyone who is applying this year, we are all rooting for you! :luck:

Less than a week before the application opens up and I have no idea what I'm going to do for my PS. Finally narrowed down the schools though...I'm thinking UF (my IS), Auburn, CSU, NC State, RVC, Edinburgh, and Glasgow.

Penn told me that I'm still wait listed for this year, but if I don't make it in off of the wait list for c/o 2018 then I will automatically be accepted for c/o 2019 and I don't have to reapply. Has anyone ever heard of this happening? I'm totally fine with that since I was planning on reapplying there anyway!! Just wondering if that's ever happened to anyone

I'd kinda been toying with the idea since I'd gotten the acceptance phone call but I wasn't sure if I really wanted to wait a year. When I realized I could become a PA resident AND get more lab volunteering hours for the VMD/PhD I figured I should go for it. I've been job hunting for the last few months. And congrats! I've got my fingers crossed for you! 🙂

Edit: I haven't turned in my deferment form yet (due June 1st). I'm not sure if they'll take someone off the waitlist if I defer or if the class will just be one smaller. I hope you get off of it!!!

Did you decide to defer? Just wondering.... And still hoping for a call from them!! My friend said she got in off of the wait list in mid July so I think there's still hope.

I can't believe it's that time of year again (and that I already finished my crazy first year)! Good luck y'all!

Don't give up hope on Illinois -- I was accepted off the wait list on June 13th last year. 🙂

I've never heard of this, but none of my friends ended up going to Penn. Congrats on this! Now you don't have to worry about anything!

I know the personal statement is rather important, but any ideas on what exactly they tend to look for? Mine focuses a lot on my background with wild animals (I wanted to make myself stand out and I figured playing with owlets would catch their attention). Anybody have any input??

VMCAS actually gives you a prompt, so make sure you follow that!

This is what's on their website currently (make sure you read yours when VMCAS opens in case it changes!)
  • Prompt: Discuss briefly the development of your interest in veterinary medicine. Discuss those activities and unique experiences that have contributed to your preparation for a professional program. Discuss your understanding of the veterinary medical profession, and discuss your career goals and objectives.

A few questions, if anyone can help:

I know the SET deadline on VMCAS is to make sure your verification is completed before the October deadline, and on the website, it says that this also means the schools get your applications sooner. Besides the peace of mind you get from not waiting to the last minute, and ensuring that your application is fine early on so there are fewer problems down the road, is there any benefit to having your application completed sooner? For example, do schools offer earlier interviews to those who submitted earlier?

On WSU's site, it says Sept. 2nd is the deadline for the "priority VMCAS application." Does that mean anything, or is that just related to the SET deadline?

I think it's like a precautionary "get your things in early" in case something goes wrong, and you'll have time to fix it before the october deadline

Wow so nervous/excited.. this will be my first time applying. I'm only in my 3rd year and I am planning on applying to a couple schools. Do most vet schools preference students with a degree over those in the middle of getting their degree? Or does it vary from school to school?

Some schools show preference, others don't, though I believe the focus is more on whether you'll have the degree by matriculation and not just when you're applying. It probably won't make a huge difference, especially if you're a strong applicant (I don't have a degree).

It definitely varies by school and application. I know @Ashgirl doesn't have a degree and was accepted at a junior, while some schools may have a program that allows you to get your degree by the end of your first year in vet school (i.e. Purdue's 3+1 program that @Romoret can tell you more about)

Will you get your Bachelor's degree next year (Spring 2015)? If so, there are thousands of people that apply as a Senior and get accepted every year. If you are applying as a (to be) Junior this year, it is very possible to get accepted without a bachelor's degree, as long as you have all your ducks lined up in a row and apply smartly (there are some schools that don't prefer Juniors, some that don't care, and some that encourage Juniors to apply).

Thanks Ashgirl! I am from Canada and will be applying as a Junior to WCVM and some Caribbean schools at least. I am interested in a couple schools from the states, but I didn't know what the policy was there. I think experience wise I am a competitive applicant and my gpa is low average so here is hoping.

I was accepted with a year left to go before I got my degree. On VMCAS, I think I even said my degree date would be this August, which is past the prerequisite deadline. I'm sure it varies by school though, so I would check once you've picked where to apply.

Just make sure you check the prerequisites. Some schools have a limit to how many prereqs can be in-progress or yet to be taken at the time you apply.

Like everyone else has stated, I cannot believe I am finally posting. I am a first tie applicant, UNC c/0 2012. I still have one more pre-req to take (Animal Science) but I am taking that in the fall. Best wishes to us all! We are 2 days away from the beginning of our vet careers (hopefully).

Oh. I plan on applying to NC State, UGA, Tennesse, Virginia/Maryland, Tuskegee, and one random long shot school (havent decided yet😉).

For our eLOR's, is it that you have to provide their name and contact info by the deadline, or that THEY have to write/turn in their leftter for you by the deadline? I'm confused how that part works.

Their stuff (letter and evaluation) has to be in by the deadline.
Also, for the verification process to begin, at least one evaluator has to have their stuff in. So if you want your application in by Sept 2nd to start verification, you gotta make sure at least one evaluator knows that deadline too.

ahh, i see. that makes sense now. thanks!

Congrats guys on applying this year or even considering applying in the near future! Your getting one step closer to your dreams! And this is such a great resource to utilize. We are all here if you need any help 🙂 Have fun with the VMCAS! They make it super easy 🙂 Also, start your personal statements now, that way you won't be stressing close to the deadline and this will also give any of the personal statement readers on here time to look it over and allow you to have multiple drafts. I know I had several drafts before I submitted mine. Good luck!!! :highfive::luck:

Hey guys, sooooo guess I'm in this thread again...waitlisted this past cycle. Thank god VMCAS is letting their previous applicants just re-open their application! Hallelujah! Anyways, I was suffering from major burn out towards the end of this spring semester and am just opening my eyes up to the world again. So quick question for the re-applicants...is it too late to contact my schools for a file review/feedback? Sure I could just email them and ask but figured I would ask you fine folks instead! 🙂
Thank you in advance!!

I don't think it's too late at all! I would go ahead and call them. The one I did had me schedule a date and time, so not sure if others do it that way too or not. I found my file review very helpful!

Today is the day! 😀

To everyone filling out the VMCAS, don't feel like you have to rush and get it done right now today. There is plenty of time left! Also, don't be afraid to ask questions to the VMCAS hotline if you aren't sure about something, they are all very nice and quite helpful.

Good Luck! :luck:

Good luck c/o 2019 applicants! Juniors shouldn't hesitate to apply early even it's only to 1 or 2 schools. Even if it doesn't work out the first cycle, you'll still get a head start on what to expect when applying later on without the pressure of trying to figure out what you're going to do with yourself the next year. I applied this past cycle as a junior to 3 schools and thankfully got accepted to 2. Fortunately, I'll still be able to graduate from my undergrad after I finish my first year of vet school. For anyone applying to VA/MD, I've heard Dr. Pelzer mention that they often encourage students to apply as juniors instead of waiting till senior year.

how many hours should I put for pet ownership?? i've had animals my entire life.

Anybody know how dual enrollment credits should be treated? Like do I need to put the schools that I got the credits down under the institutions attended section? I emailed them and am waiting for a reply, but I am curious if anyone else dealt with this. 🙂

In past years I've seen VMCAS say to not put pet ownership down, but I would call the VMCAS hotline to see if that has changed.
