C/O 2019 Applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
it would make more sense to put my questions there.😛
i don't think i'm going to include general pet ownership, but i am including my dog because she's a bit of a unique case.

It just seems to vary by school how much they want to know too. I know I put 100 hours for pet ownership on my application for Texas A&M (pretty sure that's what they said the cap was), but I really can't recall if I put it on my VMCAS or not and I didn't save that application. Worth asking about I think.

Anybody know how dual enrollment credits should be treated? Like do I need to put the schools that I got the credits down under the institutions attended section? I emailed them and am waiting for a reply, but I am curious if anyone else dealt with this. 🙂
I think you need to get the official transcript from the actual school you took the class from. I had a couple different schools I listed last year because I took several online classes and a couple pre-undergrad classes at community colleges. Not sure if you have to do that though.

As a re-applicant, I seriously love the fact that VMCAS carries over all of my information from last year! It's going to save me so much time... with that I suppose I will polish my personal statement and study for the GRE...

You and me both! Just a heads-up, if you completed a "Planned/In Progress" semester, there's no option to switch that to complete. You'll have to delete the semester and re-submit as completed

So I'm going through to calculate my last 45 GPA, does anyone know how that works? It is the last 45 classes I've taken, or the last 45 and the semester of that last 45th class?

Thanks for that. I suppose it's better than re-entering 4 years of undergraduate coursework all over again, though!

I believe it's the last 45 credit hours, not the last 45 classes. So usually about three semesters, but if you took less than 15 credit hours one semester, they'll keep counting back semesters until they reach 45, and they will count all classes from the farthest semester back they have to go. I hope that made sense haha

It did, my only problem is that I've taken summer classes, so that throws off what semester my 45 credits stop at.

Yeah it gets tough to calculate when you have things like that, but they'll just keep going back until they get to 45 credit hours

Where are y'all applying? Is there anyone here that can answer a few questions I have about Wisconsin?

That's correct. You need to list every school you attended (those for traditional schooling and those attended for dual enrollment). You also need to request a transcript from schools where you earned dual enrollment credits. For me, I had dual enrollment credits from the same undergraduate institution I attended, so I did not need to list a different school or submit another transcript. However, if you have AP credits (which I also had), the process for how you list these credits is slightly different and is explained in the VMCAS help section that specifically addresses AP credit.

So I decided to get a little ahead of the game and make a thread for those of us that will be applying for class of 2019, just so we can get to know each other, help out with the VMCA (I'm a re-applicant, so I've dealt with that side of things), ask each other about schools, etc.

A little info about myself, I am a senior in Animal Science at Purdue, graduating this coming December. Schools I'm thinking of applying to are Purdue, Iowa State (maybe), Illinois, Tennessee, and Wisconsin.

I am applying to Iowa State!

I am so excited! I will just be a undergrad junior this fall, but I have my vet-school prereqs finished. I am going to apply to my IS school just to see if I get in! Fingers crossed and good luck everyone!

How do most schools handle the pre-reqs? I know Davis only requires 75% completion at the time of application. Do other schools have different / stricter policies?

It depends on the school, so you should check the requirements for each school you're planning to apply to. This type of information is typically listed on their website.

Hey guys, I'm new here. I am a technician assistant at a Vet ER local to me, hence the screen name 🙂. I work the overnight shifts, so I'll likely post at the strangest hours of the day lol. I am applying this cycle. Still undecided on the final list, but here are some of the schools I am considering: Midwestern, LMU, UGA, Ross, and SGU.

Well....I've pretty much finished my app....it was easy because I applied last year so I just had to update some things.....I am much happier with all of my numbers this year, so fingers crossed!!! All I need to do now is finish my personal statement (which is almost done), order my transcripts, and decide if there is anything I need to write about in my explanation statement...!!!!!

Here we go again......

I have almost finished my application too! Just need to edit my personal statement a little bit, then waiting on transcripts and a few evaluators, then I'll be shelling out the money! Anyways, where is everybody applying?

I am shooting for any of the following: Ohio State, University of Illinois, Iowa State, Kansas State, Tufts, University of Minnesota, University of Missouri, or Virginia Tech

we're applying to similar schools!!! I too am applying to Ohio, Illinois, and Tufts!! VMRCVM gave me no love last year, so they're off my list this time around. In addition to Ohio/Illinois/Tufts I'm thinking Edingburg/Glasgow/RVC/SGU

I've contemplated Missou, but aren't they pretty grade heavy? Or did I imagine that? haha

Ahh so exciting! I have heard that they place more emphasis on grades rather than the GRE scores.

Mizzou places a good amount on grades (GRE I think is only 4% overall of their evaluation score, I believe). Can't remember how much emphasis grades are percentage wise, but if you have a good GPA, it might be wise to throw your hat in. We take 60 IS and 60 OOS.

I believe Mizzou is quite number heavy (I think their average matriculate GPA for the past few years has been high 3.7 something). Academics is 40% of the score, 4% being GRE, 6% Credit load (0 for 12 average credits a semester, 6 for 18 credits a semester), 10% 45 credit GPA, 20% Cumulative GPA. Then 40% of the score is non-academic, and 20% is overall impression (I believe the interview is factored in here).

I'm almost done too! Just gotta perfect my personal statement (btw, if you aren't doing so already, utilize the PS readers on sdn!! They're incredibly helpful and have already gone thru it all). I'm not applying to any of those schools but I wish you guys the best of luck!!

Ah, yeah, my GPA is only a 3.42 so grades are not my strong point :/ I think that's why I took Mizzou off my list :/

My cumulative is a 3.55 right now. I'm taking 12 credit hours this summer, so maybe my hypothetical 4.0 can boost that 😀
It's strange to think GPAs like 3.3 and 3.4 are below average. I mean, that's pretty impressive considering the classes we have to take. At least I think so.

I definitely wouldn't count yourself out of the running for a particular school just because you might have a lower GPA than that school's average. It is an average, after all, and if you have a solid application otherwise, I think it's worth a shot. I personal know of several classmates and friends who got in to a school with lower than average GPA. So don't discredit yourself too much, because you never know how it will all turn out. 🙂

I'll just be happy if I survive the rest of this summer. Organic 2, developmental bio, ecology, and all 3 labs do not make for a very fun summer "break"

Holy moly. That's worse than my upcoming semester is going to be, and I thought that was bad.

I'm working full time this summer and taking Animal Nutrition so it's been difficult to find time to work on my application. I'm just so wiped out every day.

It wouldn't be so bad if it weren't so condensed. Organic is smushed into 8 weeks! 😕
Yeah working full time and taking any class on top of it is hard work. Just spend like 30 minutes here and there on it. We still have 4 months so if you start early it won't be so overwhelming.

this question is for all you re-applicants.

are you writing a completely new personal statement or revamping yours from last year? i talked to someone from WSU admissions and she said to rewrite it, but several vets that i know who applied a few times said not to worry about it. what are you doing?

Are you planning on applying to WSU again? If so you might consider revamping it a bit. Have you sent it to a few people from the PS thread to see what they think?

I'm not completely overhauling mine, because mine got good comments in my file review, but I will be updating it.

I just realized I complained about how I feel like I don't have time to work on my app...but I use all my free time posting on SDN and playing WW, so I guess I shouldn't be talking 😛
Hey i get up here when i'm not studying. at least it's somewhat productive? what on earth are all these WW games? i looked through the threads and i'm totally confused.

We gotta assimilate the noobs sooner or later =P
Though I guess I'm still a noob...

Where are y'all applying? Is there anyone here that can answer a few questions I have about Wisconsin?

I'm happy to answer any UW questions via PM 🙂. Also best of luck to all you guys! Can't believe it's been almost two years since I had to do all this crap...

Basically, it's a fun game where people are assigned to be a villager, or a wolf. You have a role, and sometimes an ability (like to block, protect, or see what other players are). The goal of the game is for the villagers to root out the wolves (by lynching/killing players) and for the wolves to kill the villagers and not be lynched. If you are interested I can tag you when the next sign-up goes up, it's suppper addicting.

I wish she was joking. There should be a 12-step program for this game.

Have you heard of Mafia?
No. I've heard of League of Legends, which my husband plays incessantly.

If this many people are playing, it must be entertaining. It sounds kinda cool. I'd be down to check it out when the next sign up comes up.
