C/O 2019 Applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm glad we're really the same person: a twelve year old girl obsessed with milkshakes 🙂

Super random question; you didn't volunteer at the blue ridge animal clinic, did you?
No, but I know some of the people who have worked/volunteered there. Are you a c'villeite that I don't know about?!

Lexingtonite 😉. I volunteered there and you kinda reminded me of someone that I met there a few times!
Nope, not me lol. But wow you live super close! My gf actually did some volunteering work with them back when she used to be pre-vet around 3-5 years ago. She lives out in Crozet.

I love finding people in my tiny little corner of the world! 🙂

Random question, but does anyone know when schools typically update their class statistics? I keep looking for Class of 2018 stats for multiple schools, but not many have it updated.

Some schools have them hidden beneath walls of text on their web pages. Keep searching! Or you can email the specific school and ask for it.

Perhaps someone here would be able to help me out.
I am looking for ways to beef up my application for the next cycle (not being negative I know if I got into the 2 schools I applied to I'd be super lucky 😛) One way I would really like to do this is by working at a vet clinic. But how do you go about making this happen? Do you just ask them if they have any positions they would be willing to let you fill, or do you try to find some online application like many other jobs are now-a-days? I am currently shadowing at a clinic currently and would begin "applying" there. I graduate in May so I would like to start working this summer. Any suggestions or thoughts would be super helpful! Thanks in advance 🙂

Definitely talk to the office manager at the clinic where you are already shadowing, to see if they know whether they will have any job openings over the summer! Outside of that, you can either contact the clinics or look for job postings.
Here's what I did but YMMV as always:
I looked up every clinic within the distance from my house that I was willing to commute. I went to their websites, found their email addresses, and sent out emails asking if they would have any kennel tech or vet assistant openings over the summer. I attached my resume to the emails. I did this fairly early, I think in late January, even though I wasn't going to be back home until early May. Most of the clinics I contacted were unsure of their summer schedules, but said they would keep my resume on file and would contact me if anything came up. A few asked that I get in touch again a little closer to the start of the summer, so late March/early April. So I contacted those places again, ended up getting interviews at two of them, and was hired as a tech at one. I did also end up looking around at craigslist, monster, and various other job posting websites, but for the most part I found that the places that were advertising open positions there were looking for experienced techs (which I was not).
Now I went the email route since I was 800 miles away from my hometown, but some people say it is better to call, or to stop by the clinic and drop off your resume in person. I honestly couldn't tell you which methods the clinics prefer. I myself prefer email anyway.

There are many threads on this if you search, but long story short: your best bet at this point is at the clinic where you shadow.

Thank you very much this was super helpful 🙂

anyone know if there is a western U thread? I interview dec 5 and wanted to know what to expect but haven't been able to find a thread

I know that technically being a "legacy" for a CVM can't influence admission, but why else would they ask for it on the supplemental app? [Referring to UGA]

Anyone know if there is an Auburn c/o 2019 thread? Couldn't find one yet...

I found one awhile ago...I applied there but I haven't heard anything from them since the last email when they said "You will hear from us after the first of the year regarding application status...etc" so I didn't really stalk the forum like I did with others. I can find it and paste it for you though?!

I actually ended up starting one haha. It's probably buried now cuz we weren't very active. Figures, since they're like the last school to make decisions.

I got denied an interview from auburn. OOS, email 11-21. So I would think no news is good news for y'all

I've noticed quite a few posts around SDN recently, asking how admissions committees evaluate applicants. Well, the other day I stumbled across this in the admissions office:

If you're applying a year or two earlier than normal, don't be tempted to try the age potions that some people are selling to applicants. On second thought, please do try the potions, but be sure to post your beard pictures on SDN.

If you really want to get your name in, I'll consider entering it under a different school. I am accepting bribes in the form of correctly brewed felix felicis. Finals are coming up soon you know.

You've just made my night. And also made me remember that that was the only time Fred and George saw each other as grandpas 🙁

Become a 12 year old with a beard, got it

🙁 That book made me have so many feelings, I got so attached to all the characters.

These are not things that should be brought up. Ever. *has flashbacks to every death in the entire series* 😢

Thank you so much for posting this. I am sure you have provided a much needed laugh for the many a stressed applicant 😛

does anyone know if there is a wcvm c/o 2019 thread going on?

starting to hear back from universities about interviews! good luck everyone! 😀

I would guess simply curiosity. It would be cool for a school to be able to say they've had X number of generations from a certain family attend their school, assuming all of them were qualified applicants. And even if they don't end up admitting a legacy applicant, it must still be nice for them to see that an alum enjoyed their time at that school and enjoys the profession enough to encourage their child to apply.

I know if probably differs on a school-by-school basis, but in general, what do schools look at for Fall 2014 transcripts? Does it factor into the decision-making/GPA-calculating, or is mostly just to make sure you're finishing up pre-reqs and not failing them?

Studying for finals is somehow more stressful when I'm in application limbo, for some reason 🙁

Same. I feel like "Wow I'm so close and I did so well up until now but when they see my fall transcripts that'll all go out the door."

Cheer up everyone! At least you're not having an existential crisis with an iron...

My issue is that my natural reaction to stress is extreme avoidance. Got a ton of things to do? Well I think I'll just do none of those things.

Somehow this was less of an issue when I was taking 18 credits (7 classes, two of which were 4 hour labs) in addition to working every Saturday. Maybe this means vet school will be good for me.

I'm the same way. The busier I am, the better I am at getting things done. If I have too much time to get something done then I will procrastinate forever.

Yuuuup
This is why I'm taking 18 credits and going back to my regular volunteer job next semester. Having two days off a week has been more destructive than anticipated :yeahright:

Those that ask for fall transcripts before their decisions usually update/calculate your GPA from the fall semester, or at least it was updated on the ones I applied to. You can always call/email the school about it and see, they are usually pretty good at getting back to you.

I already got rejected from both schools I applied to for this year is it bad I already have my list for applying next year??
haha WAYY ahead of myself :wacky:
It's not bad 🙂 It means you can tailor the improvements you make to your application to fit the schools you're applying to! Did you do file reviews at the school that rejected you this cycle? Culd be really helpful for giving you ideas of how to improve 🙂

LSU doesn't do folder reviews for OOS if you're not in the top 150 🙁 But I should definitely get on asking if Mizzou will do one! If I had to guess though, I think it was my experience hours not that strong 😳 and my GPA but I'm getting a 3.6 this semester BAM!! 😉

You can also post your stats in the "What are my chances?" thread and get recommendations there 🙂 But a file review will be very valuable!

I am shaking like crazy - just got an interview invite via email while I was vacuuming! I'm going to vacuum forever!!!

*edit - this was to Penn - had to finish vacuuming
and this has reminded me that the superstitions thread hasn't been posted in, in awhile. Might as well bump that up so all of c/o 2019 can say all the crazy superstitious things we do 😛

I was going through the co 2018 thread and noticed people were sending fall transcripts to VMCAS. My schools said to bring it to the interview or mail it to the school, but are we also supposed to send them to VMCAS?

I've been trying to find this out as well, but everyone is away for holiday. Happy New Year! Hopefully we get some answers soon!

For me, I contacted all the schools that had "send to VMCAS" on their websites... their response was to mail to the school's admissions office directly. So I would confirm with your own emails, but as far as I can determine, VMCAS won't process anything now. Everything should just go to the school itself.

I think it depends on the school. Last year, I know that Iowa and I think Minnesota wanted them sent to VMCAS by a certain date.
