Didn't see a thread yet for this cycle so I figured I'd start this with programs receiving applications soon.
lol it really is! I wonder if that means there's even less interest than previous years?Very dead compared to last year!
Potentially, but after reading the threads for the past 2 years I'd say it only takes a handful of people to get the conversation going.lol it really is! I wonder if that means there's even less interest than previous years?
Based on previous years, you can expect some programs next week, however the bulk of it starts to roll in throughout August. So when will interview invites start coming in? Anyone know?
I applied to 17 programs, but I just went based off locations I'd be interested in living in. Other residents in my program have applied to anywhere from 4 programs to 40 programs! How many places are people applying to?
(I'm just a resident but might be interested in CAP down the road)
You can scroll through last years thread to get a sense. It seems like not much happens until about 2 weeks in.So when will interview invites start coming in? Anyone know?
I’m from the northeast and applied to 12, and my mentor at my program said that was too many because “it’s not like residency, you usually get into your top programs.” Not sure I totally bought into it since I think it depends how selective those top programs usually are! But regardless, it depends on who you talk to, like most things in medicine. Definitely find a child/adolescent psychiatrist in your program to have as a mentor. It helps keep you on track to build your CV since residency can be a lot sometimes. How many places are people applying to?

Adding to this, the "best" programs are competitive but there seems to be a notable drop off after that in terms of competitiveness. So the general sentiment of your mentor is probably accurate just with that caveat of recognizing whether your top program is a reach for you or not.I’m from the northeast and applied to 12, and my mentor at my program said that was too many because “it’s not like residency, you usually get into your top programs.” Not sure I totally bought into it since I think it depends how selective those top programs usually are! If only we could know the call schedules ahead of time so I don't waste time on interviews at these placed with intense schedules!Good luck to everyone this year! Some advice virtual interviewing was new for me as when I interviewed for my adult residency it was still in person. Something that helped me the most when making my decision was reaching out to fellows directly with questions. Also, learn from my mistake and don't over apply! Anything more than 8-10 applications is overkill. There is zero reason to interview at more than say 7-8 places the odds of falling past your top 3 is very small. Pay attention if a program has call as some programs have very heavy call schedules that they will go out of their way to try and not highlight unless you specifically get in depth details.
You should try to figure if you personally have specific areas of interest craft questions around specifics around those interests and things you are interested in getting trained in. That along with actual examples of them being supportive of their fellows, and efforts to make sure fellows feel as though they are being heard and so forth.Questions I'm going to ask current fellows at a given program:
-call schedule
-is moonlighting allowed/feasible?
-ancillary benefits
-quality of teaching
What are some good questions to ask faculty interviewers? I've always struggled with this and usually throw generic questions out just to fill the space.
Looking at the previous year's thread, seems like the bulk of programs sent out invites in August. So I would give it a week or two at least to gauge how things are going. Is anyone else still waiting to hear back from the vast majority of programs? I know it's still early but I was kind of expecting to hear from more places at this point.
You have to know your audience during interviews. I would avoid any questions that a fellow would know that a faculty member wouldn't. Put yourself in their shoes in working with fellows and think about the things that are important in that interaction. How much graduated autonomy do they give fellows? What is their approach to supervision/teaching? What qualities would make a fellow they work with thrive in their program? Are there things that they wish fellows would do more or less of? Then you can tailor it to wherever that faculty is working, whether it's on inpatient, outpatient, IOP/PHP, residential, CMHC, research, etc.Questions I'm going to ask current fellows at a given program:
-call schedule
-is moonlighting allowed/feasible?
-ancillary benefits
-quality of teaching
