Class of 2016....how ya doing?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Eww cumulative anatomy final! That's just gross! We don't have a cum final since we already hacked through the brachioplexus and removed the head lol.

Wait are you serious?!?!?!?! I just started hacking through the head last week and oh yea my final is definitely cumulative...which really sucks...

Anatomy final in 10 hours. :scared:
Cumulative written. They kill me every time. I rock practicals and totally eat shiz on writtens. Boo.

Wow guys... I don't even think we're going to get through the entire dog/cat this quarter, and some of you have entire midterms on it??? I do not envy you. Our first midterm was only on the thoracic limb (muscles/bones/vessels/nerves), and our next midterm (next Monday! :scared:) is on the thoracic trunk (hypaxials, epaxials) and cavity (heart, lungs, etc.).

I think we finish the dog/cat in winter quarter, and then go through pocket pets, and then starting in spring quarter we do large animal. I really like our anatomy schedule though. It's slow enough that I never feel rushed, but fast enough that I'm not bored 🙂

I think their goal in anatomy is to crush all hopes of an A 🙁, I want it so badly for anatomy (don't really care about my other classes) but it's not looking like it's gonna happen. I woke up thinking about "openings" and realized there were potentially a whole bunch on the practical that I botched up because I didn't realize that opening was referring to the hole and not the canal. I didn't even realize it when checking my answers, I was just like oh yeah got that one right next. I don't know how many "openings" questions there were but it was a lot :scared:. Still know I passed but it makes me sooooooooooooooooooooooo mad that it's the stupid little stuff that gets me, I knew the name of the stupid opening, the canal, the area around it, I just didn't realize that "opening" meant the hole specifically, I thought that opening was cluing us in on the fact that the pin was in a hole, not the surrounding structure because a lot of the openings (like the auditory tube) are very small. Makes me so mad. I love anatomy, I wish it didn't hate me.

I have a sexy grade in anatomy. But after today I am sure it will fall. Wish I would have prepared more for this. :xf: :xf: :xf:

Actually feeling alright about the biochem exam I took today. Although I felt that way about my dev bio exam which didn't turn out so well, so I guess I'll have to wait and see.

But I am enjoying my Wildlife lecture today because she's talking about South African penguins which I love.

Ugh me too!! It's official as of right now!! Woo! :soexcited:

SOOOO JEALOUS, We are working on the pelvic limb this week, have the pelvis next week, then the horse and cow next semester. I can't wait to be done with this class. Especially since I think I failed the last exam 🙁 UGH.

Yeah we have large next semester.
Now that I've purged all that knowledge out of me brain 😀, time to binge for my endo final in 44 hours :uhno:

I am sure you didn't fail! Everyone seems all worked up about the exam, you aren't the only one. I thought for the most part it wasn't bad, but the root of the mesentary questions killed all hopes of an A for me 🙁. I still wish our exams were longer with more questions so if there is one thing you don't know it doesn't bring your grade down. Plus I'd love it if the grade was 80 points for practical and 60 points for written. My favorite would be if they made the practical harder and had all 140 points from practical stuff 🙂, that would be awesome for me.

I love anatomy and am gonna be sad when it's over. I love being in the anatomy lab, getting out of the auditorium and actually doing something instead of just sitting and listening all day. Plus, I love finding stuff and learning where everything is. Innervations and functions, not so much, but overall wish we could be studying anatomy all day every day and skip the other classes. Well, we could keep pathology since I'm good at that and I enjoy studying that too (not a fan of class, but like studying the notes). Those two could balance the day out. Anatomy in the morning and path in the afternoon 🙂.

This was the breakdown of our final exactly.

I think we have a future anatomical pathologist on our hands 😀

That's all fine and dandy for you, but I'm really struggling 🙁 I legit think I failed (not the "oh I got a B/C so I wanna complain about it." I thought I was doing okay (got a B on the first exam) but this last one KILLED me. SO scared to find out my grade. I enjoy finding things in the lab but I actually really dread Tuesdays and Thursdays because I've begun to associate anatomy with evil things, like failing out of vet school (hahaa, okay, a little melodramatic there).

Glad to hear you're enjoying it/doing well, though 🙂

If it will make you feel better, our class average for our practical was failing. You're not alone.

Or just a gunner...

Keep your head up, Nstarz. Have you looked into a tutor? How are you studying?

Not a gunner, well at least not an obnoxious one. I have a drive to be number one and am super competitive, but honestly, anatomy is the one class that I really truly want an A in. I want to be the best in anatomy, I love anatomy and want to do awesome! That, however, is not happening. I'm doing OK, though, definitely not failing and I really have no room to complain, but I practically live in the lab and feel I should get a solid A no problem, but that doesn't happen. I think I have just as good of a knowledge base as those that do get the 100%s though, I just am horrible with multiple choice.

I am not that person in class that asks questions to hear themselves talk, or goes around telling everyone and their brother what grade they got. I am the one that won't stop until they've gotten to number 1 (which means I won't be stopping like ever because I am so far from number one 🙁) and loves a good challenge. I want to be the awesomest vet I can be and won't stop until I am, which means I'll stop when I die. I have drive and determination and study a ton, if that makes me a gunner in people's minds then I am, but I don't see myself that way. After going to the teaching hospital to do a CBC today, I definitely don't feel like one. I think I may have won the award for most awkward first year

I think you'll be surprised. Everyone seems really worked up about this exam and think it was horrible, but I think you'll realize there was a lot that you actually got right. If you are having trouble on the practical portion, they have tutors in the lab on Mondays and Wednesdays (I know Wednesday, I think Monday is the other day but not 100% certain) and they are super helpful. Our group tries to go when they're there so we can clarify the structures we aren't sure on. It is so hard to get help during the lab time, it's nice to run things by the tutors. I'd highly recommend it 👍. Another thing that is nice is going in on a Saturday by yourself and just spending 3-4 hours with your dog and your notes. Work your way through at your own pace and figure out where everything is. It might not work for everyone, but when I go through in order and work my way down the nerves and vessels, it really helps.

Hang in there NStarz! As much as you want your friends and classmates to do well it can be hard to hear them talking about how much they love a class when you're having a hard time. Don't worry. The situation will reverse soon enough. That's the beauty of veterinary school. Good luck!:luck:

Endocrinology final today :scared:
I know I can pass, but hoping for a little more :xf:

Good Luck! :luck:

Thankssssss!!! 😀
I'm getting pumped to take it and get it over with so I can watch my Noles play tonight with a few beers 🙂. Then it's back to studying for my two finals next week. :uhno: But even with them coming up, I've justified a night of football for myself 👍

👍

I am starting to get used to not having exams very often. We haven't had an exam since September... Exam is the last week of November... it will cover Pathology, Immunology, Inflammation, Parastiology, Bacteriology, and Virology. :scared:

Wahooooooooo!! Two more classes finished!! :soexcited: Two more finals next week and then I get to spend a whole 6 days with my love :biglove:
Back to studying tomorrow, but for now, beer and football. 😀

Well, I failed the anatomy exam. I'm not too heartbroken about it since I knew I didn't do well. The important thing is that I can still get at least a C (need a 70 on my last exam for a C). Thanks for all your well wishes! I'm going to buckle down and start hard core studying for anatomy this weekend so I'm not scrambling the week before like last time.

The important thing is that I don't want to be a surgeon

Thanks for all your 😍 guys. Much appreciated!

I've tried the tutor thing (2 different tutors) for the previous exam, and it didn't help me that much. The tutors spent more time looking stuff up then they knew. I think I need to spend some more time in the lab. It was just super hard last time because no one had a really good dissected head so I was studying off of diagrams and expecting myself to be able to apply that to the real dog, which obviously didn't work too well.

I'll just keep on trucking!

Sorry to hear that NStarz 🙁, I was sure you were exaggerating about how bad it went. If you need help in the lab, I LOVE going to lab and it helps me learn if I say stuff out loud and go over it with others, so we could meet in the lab and study together sometime if you'd like. This weekend is bad because it's wildlife conference weekend 😀, but next weekend or during the week would be good.

There is one tutor that is great, some of the others not so much.

Hang in there! I reallyyyyyyyyy struggled with small animal anatomy. By far my worst class that semester. But, this year in surgery, I'm actually finding that I learned more than I thought I had. I've honestly been really enjoying surgery, and I was dreading it becaues I thought my background in anatomy was too weak. Turns out, I just really sucked at applying my knowledge to exams and identifying mutilated, dried out strands of nothingness on cadavers

And 👍 to more time in lab. I tried all sorts of websites, study guides, diagrams etc. My grade didn't start to improve until I started spending hours in the lab, headphones in so no one would bother me, with a stack of textbooks and various cadavers.

The whole topic is so appropriate because I was going to post:
you know you're in vet school when you come home late on a Friday night...from the anatomy lab cuz you have a test Monday 🙄
Hang in there everyone-so close to Thanksgiving break!!!

I never did too great at finding things (and being sure that what I thought I had found was actually what it was supposed to be) so I would hover a lot around other people, ask them to show me stuff, take videos sometimes with my phone. Even if you don't really talk to the person, you can usually get them to explain stuff because a: they like to be know-it-all-ish, which is fine if they wanna share, and b: it helps them cement it too.

NStarz, does your lab have a prossected dog? My group has a tiny dog, so when we can't find something, we look at the prossection. I honestly learn a lot better from it because everything is already labeled. I do look at other groups' dogs, which is important, because the exam is on other groups' dogs. Also, if someone has a really good xyz on their dog, the professors will announce it so we can look at it. Do you have a list of terms you are expected to know? My roommate made definitions and locations of all the structures for an exam and did really well on it. For me, repetition is key. I review it in lab, and then review it in my head when I have a lull moment.

We just took the third anatomy written and practical exam on the abdomen and pelvis, with 1/4 review of thorax and thoracic/pelvic limb. The lab was about the same as the others, but the written was a little easier (or maybe I just studied a lot more). We start the head next week:scared:

We just started anatomy of the head this week. SO. MANY. FORAMINA. Luckily it's really interesting. Plus we had one random day last week where we dissected chickens. That was pretty awesome.

We are almost done with first semester, c/o 2016! Dreaming of that massive celebratory beer at the end of the tunnel!

Don't let the head scare you. I found it to be one of the easier ones personally. Everyone struggles with different parts so don't count the head out yet :luck:

You got this. I loathe anatomy, and really struggled with the first test, and sort of struggled with the second test we just had. I got someone who really likes anatomy teach me the stuff I was fuzzy on, and it really improved my grade. I personally don't do well if I'm in the lab by myself, because I get defeated easily and just want to go home. So, if I have a friend there, even if they are working on a different dog, I feel more compelled to stay.

I don't have any pearls of wisdom, but just know that everyone here has your back. We're here for you, and believe in you!

Just keep swimming, Nstarz. I hated anatomy and the only reason I did decently was because I had some awesome group members who took time to help me study in a way that was useful to me (and them, but more me, I think). What really helped me was spending a lot more time in lab after-hours and having someone there to point at things and say, "Name that!" Which you'd think you can just do on your own, but it's so much more helpful when they know what something is so you don't have to shuffle for your notes to double-check. Good luck and hang in there! :luck:

Hey you got this. I hated anatomy so, so much. It was really obnoxious to me to hear some of my classmates talking about how it was easy because all you have to do is memorize this and that and isn't it fun to be doing dissections in lab?? and all that crap that made me want to shove them off a cliff.

Change your approach, do what you need to and pass and you'll be done with the regurgitating of structures you will from now on only see in the context of clinical applications, which makes them much easier to understand and care about.

Good luck nstarz!!! I'm rooting for you!

I'm spending my 3 day weekend studying. DISLIKE. back to hematology and disappearing into my hole.

We have a 4 day weekend 😀
Thank you veterans and homecoming 👍
