Class of 2016....how ya doing?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So proud of how productive I've been today. Listened to two lectures and am almost done listening to a 3rd . Made study guides for 4 lectures. Almost done with study guides 5 and 6. And I'm about to switch to anatomy. Probably will be making flashcards or drawing out pathways while watching a TV show to give my brain a little bit of a break.

Also went to the gym and made a pumpkin with nutella swirl cheesecake for dessert tomorrow.

Why can't I be like this when I'm at school????

Wow! Way to go! And I thought I was motivated... All I did was laundry

My day...

Listened to one lecture.
Walked the dogs for a long time around campus on such (we saw Deer!).
Drove teh wife home from princeton.
Sat on couch, watched TV, and ordered in food.

Accomplished nothing but was still tired. 🙄

Beautiful, isn't it?

I have a sticky one and one huge one I take to wherever I'm studying in the house. Love being able to lay down on the floor with it.

Because you have classes, and labs, and exams the next day, and 10,000 annoying e-mails, and .......

Of those 10,0000 annoying emails, 95% are probably the E-value ones.

And that is really pretty DVM. I need to get me a bigger white out board. Maybe I'll do that tomorrow when stores are open. I need to get felt tip/overhead pens or whatever they're called.

Yeah.. that was the biggest whiteboard I could find and it is actually really small... I need to get some colored dry erase/felt tip pens. That would make things much nicer.

I have some but I left them at the bf's apartment because I was using his dry erase board. I need to get those overhead markers because I want to print out pictures of the skeleton and stick it in a plastic bag/page protector thing and draw muscle attachments and stuff like that on it repeatedly until stuff sinks in. I learn by drawing but it's a PIA to draw bones repeatedly.

That is a good idea! I am not jealous of you still having anatomy.

One of the professors gave me that idea because I sucked at the first practical, so I needed tips for how to study for this one.

We still have one more quarter of it left when we come back after break too. We're just doing the heads at that point I believe.

That is good. I quite liked the head, it was the one thing that I was the best at.

Well it is the one thing I suck the worst at. Way too many foramina and too many things coming out of them...

Yes the heads!.

That was the only part of anatomy I did decently on.

Get a skull and know all the holes and what goes in and out . You really do need to know every single part of the skull and you only have one lab to start to go over it. It will really help knowing them. If you don't have one, I can lend you mine.

Totally going to take you up on that offer.

If you're looking for big white boards, here are a few tips:

1) glass works really well as a dry erase board. I use my sliding glass doors on occasion and had a friend who used the mirrors on her closet all the time.

2) if you go to lowes and/or home depot type stores, there is something called tile board (or shower board...I can't remember). It is basically dry erase board that is 4 ft tall and you can have them cut it down to whatever size you want. It's extraordinarily inexpensive and you can cover entire walls with it, or just prop it up/lay it down where ever you please!

Guess I'll be heading to Lowes or Home Depot tomorrow to look for that. Thanks for the tips!

I think I remember someone else on here talking about using the tiles in their shower as a dry-erase board also?

There are no Lowes or Home Depots here.... 🙁

And I can't really travel with a huge piece of shower board, although it would be funny to see someone try.

:boom:  🙁

I think that covers it... Time to do the cram method instead of actually meticulously studying.

Next week is going to suck and involve a lot of tears.

For you and me both. And it will involve copious amounts of caffeine, stress food and little sleep.

I think the stress has killed my stomach... I am not anywhere near as hungry as normal and I have been getting really nauseous lately... I have candy in my fridge, chocolate, that would normally have been devoured in a couple of days... It has been there for nearly a week. 😱

Definitely the little sleep and the copious amounts of caffeine (in the form of soda because I don't like coffee or tea... 😉)

Mmmm now I need (yes need) chocolate! 😍

I actually got like that right after my anatomy midterm and before my histo one. Although, that was the beginning of my month long upper respiratory infection so I don't know if post nasal drip was to blame...Everything I ate made me feel like crap for like a week, so I just kind of avoided eating.

And I have no idea how you people get by without coffee. Soda just doesn't cut it for me.

seriously. I need at least one cup to get through an easy day. exams call for major caffeine overdosing. I don't care if it makes my heart do weird things and makes me twitchy as long as I can keep my eyes open!

Sad part is, if I want to, I can still go to sleep. It wakes me up a bit but just makes me more focused.

Prior to vet school did y'all drink caffeine? I don't drink any caffeine or soda bc it makes me feel crazy! Just curious for future reference if I possibly get accepted this cycle .

I have slowly been increasing my coffee intake over the past few years before vet school. Many years ago I hated it, then got into those super-sweet mochas, then dirty chai lattes, then we started making coffee at home, and now I need a cup to start my day without killing the first person who tries to talk to me. I don't drink soda because it tastes gross.

Coffee and tea taste absolutely disgusting to me so I don't drink those and never have. I do like soda, so I will drink that but not usually first thing in the morning... I will drink either water or get a hot chocolate for the morning.

Is it possible to get through vet school without caffeine

I am attempting that now.

I have not had caffeine in the last month (I got mine mainly through soda and I was drinking waaay too much - and since I am no longer allowed to drink diet soda I was getting waay too much sugar)...

I did a little. I'm more of a "sit and sip coffee" on weekends type. I do take chai tea to school every morning, but that's more to have something warm to drink in those freezing lecture theatres, plus the act of sipping something keeps me awake. I avoid things with a lot of caffeine in them (like coffee) because they don't keep me awake, they just make me drowsy and jittery.

I started working in a bagel shop when I was 14... and quickly discovered my love of iced coffee. I've always been an addict and actually drink less now than I used to when there was a dunkin donuts on every street corner. plus my body just doesn't handle all that caffeine as well as it used to.

I won't lie, I'm a little worried about the fact that caffeine does nothing for me except make me anxious and shakey if I have way too much. I don't know how I'm going to get through vet school without it.

The only caffeinated beverage I drink is Sunkist pop (no coffee or other caffeinated beverages) and I'm still alive and almost done with one semester 👍, so it is possible. I am definitely in the minority, most people drink tons of coffee, but it's not necessary. I have never fallen asleep in class and rarely drink caffeine. I wouldn't worry about it, if you don't like coffee or don't do well with it, I wouldn't start drinking it just for vet school. It is crazy at times and I've fallen asleep studying, but you need sleep too 😀

Is it possible to get through vet school without caffeine

Yes
I rarely drink caffeine and I have a friend in vet school who doesn't touch it. Just depends on the person and time management skills... which do tend to disappear

I don't drink coffee and only have tea when I'm sick or it's a cold night/morning. Soda is my caffeine of choice, but I gave it up cold turkey last semester because I was addicted to it. Now I allow myself to drink soda for the express purpose of the caffeine in it, and it's enough to perk me up and keep me focused. But I could definitely get through without caffeine, I would just have to force myself to pay attention more.

But I also don't pull crazy all nighters. I love my sleep and I make a point to get enough sleep, even before exams.

Oh yeah, and this. The morning of exams, my classmates are talking about how they're on their umpteenth coffee or only got 2 hours of sleep and all I can think is, "How are you even upright??" Some people can do that. For me, there is no substitute for sleep.

That's one thing I know I'm not going to be able to pass on in vet school. I HAVE to sleep. I am so much better off getting more sleep and not knowing as much info than not sleeping and getting to study more. I can't remember anything if I don't get enough sleep.

I started drinking Chai tea lattes sophomore year in college and it progressed from there. I noticed how before coffee I wasn't nearly as focused in class, but if I'm drinking it before or during class, I pay way better attention.

And I have only pulled one all nighter in vet school so far and that was for my dev bio final. Literally got 40 minutes of sleep. It's not how I prefer to prepare for an exam but it had to happen for that one. Otherwise, I usually am in bed by 2 or 3 at the latest to allow for about 5 hours of sleep.
