Class of 2016....how ya doing?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So I just can't stop thinking about it. I am pretty sure I may have missed every single question on today's exam 🙁 Uh, now I got to wait a whole week to find out just how bad I did. 🙁

This post is for you pepperocini-I know you're out there lurking and not posting! :meanie:
Text me over break if you're bored-there's only a few of us still in Blacksburg.

You called me out! Just got home from lab - I'll be working in bacteriology over break (yay extra bucks!). Better news is, they are letting me come back next semester (it wasn't ever in question, I just can't believe I'll be back for round 2/8)!

We will def figure something to do over the next few weeks - today is my wife's last day of teaching for a few weeks, and I won't be working until the week after New Year's: Good bye responsibility!!!

Are you working at the college? How'd you get that gig?

It feels great to have made it to next semester! I'll text you soon for drinks🙂

The VTH was hiring for a few on-call clin path techs... I applied, was rejected, but was then offered a better position working weekends in the Microbiology Dept. I have a certain amount of training hours I need to put in before they set me loose on my own. So far it's pretty fun... as fun as streaking plates for isolation and running bacteria ID panels can be 😉.

The wife and I will be back in Blacksburg tomorrow and are trying to figure out our plans for New Year's. I text you when we get back (have no cell reception out here in the boonies of WV).

I think we just lost our first member of the class of 2016. 🙁 Such a sweetheart. I'll miss her (not for academic reasons, FWIW).

Heading back to edinburgh on thursday, classes start on monday.... Ready to get back but not ready to dive back into studying.

I'm sorry that you have to go back already but jealous that you're going back to Scotland. I really wish I had applied overseas sometimes.... Have fun and study hard!

It is sad that she's not coming back, I hope she finds what she's looking for.

Classes start tomorrow. :bang:

Sorry to hear you lost your first classmate, guys. We've lost 3 so far.🙁

Yeah we lost 2 for sure and I know a few others may not be returning. :-/

Yikes!

How big is your class size? I think we haven't lost any unless Utah lost some (we're not really connected with what goes on down there). We have a pretty small class so maybe it's just less likely we lose some so early on.

Hopefully your class dynamic isn't impacted too much 🙁

I think we've lost two, maybe three. However, we are gaining a student starting Monday. I'm not really sure how that works.

I think we have the biggest class size at 164, so we should be expecting to lose some, but it's still sad 🙁.

Hey guys, just out of curiosity, are you freely given your class rank? I was just browsing the policies of the school I'm hoping to attend in Canada and it was stated that you have to make a written request and to whom the information is to be released (assuming we don't get to know?). Just wondering if that's a common practice. 🙂

We can access ours online through a portal (though I don't really want to look at mine, haha. 😛)

I don't know if/when or even how to get my class rank at Edinburgh... they do put up a range for test score grades and well if you know that you were in a certain range for all of the exams... chances are that is probably about where your rank is.

Let's play this game again. What classes does everyone have this semester?

Bio II: Parasitology, Bact, Viro, Myco
Pharm
Intro to Clinical Med

AVC will give ranks, but you have to request it, it's not automatically given. I got mine this year because I had someone writing a letter of rec for me who wanted to know. Popped in to the office, asked for it, they told me to come back and pick it up in an hour or so, and the associate dean gave it to me on a slip of paper.

Core Classes:
Physiology II
Comparative & Developmental Anatomy (Large animal)
Embryology & Teratology
Intro to Behavior
Infection & Immunity (Immuno, BacT, Viro, Parasitology, etc).
Teaching Animal Unit (Hands on livestock handling/care/sample collection etc)
Problem Solving for Cases in Infectious Diseases and Immunity

Electives:
Advanced Topics in Zoo Med (Zoological rounds, pretty much).
Topics in Wild Reptile Medicine (Maybe)

Selectives for the end of the semester are figured out later.

Adopt A Vet Student (gotta do mine this semester)
Clinical Skills I continued
Comparative Anatomy & Physiology
Feeds and Feeding
General Pathology
Gross Anatomy II (Canine/Feline skull, head & LA dissection)
Immunology
Physiology
PBL II
Radioanatomy (finish)
Histology (finish)

Comparative anatomy
Physiology 3 (gut and endocrine metabolism)
Pathology
Immunology
Parasitology

And I think everything but physio and path are lab classes.

Physiology
Immunology
Large Animal Anatomy
Basic Nutrition
Pathology
Neurology

(6/6 have labs. Yikes)

Electives: Equine neonatal medicine, agricultural animal problems and Research Orientation

It's definitely going to be harder but I am so excited to start the 'ologies'. Hopefully this enthusiasm lasts through second year...

Courses for this semester:

Animal Body 3 Includes: Endocrinology, Urinary System, Nervous System, Cardiorespiratory System, Digestive System, Metabolism and Temperature Regulation, and Reproductive System.

Animal Body 4 Includes: Integrative Anatomy and a bunch of clinical problem sets... Combining everything we have already learned clinically.

We also have Animal Health, Welfare and Food Safety AND our professional and clinical skills course.

Should be a fun and busy semester... already looking forward to Easter Break.

Parasitology
LA anatomy
Organ microanatomy (aka histo part II😍)
Pharmacology I
Physiology
Nutrition
Basic science in clinical medicine (PBL stuff I think)
Career development and practice management (business class)
Principles of radiology

Anatomy 2 (horse, ruminant, fish, chicken)
Micro anatomy 2- until March then we switch to Embryology
Physiology 2
Epidemiology
Parasitology
General pathology
Clinical orientation 1
Structure and function 2

Wow, I'm shocked that some schools have only lost 1 or 2 people! We lost one within 2 days of classes starting ( 😱 ), lost another one about a month or so in, lost another one about 2 months in, lost another one in November, and then I know we've lost at LEAST one after finals this past semester...so that's 5+ thus far 🙁

And I KNOW some of you ( 😍 ) were wondering how my semester ended since things were in question.....It's all good!!!! Everything worked out pretty well for me. 🙂 And yes, I did get my health issues documented w/the university!

As for classes this next semester, we have:

Large Animal Anatomy w/Lab
Developmental Anatomy
GI Physiology
Microscopic Anatomy, Part II
Clinical Skills
Nutrition w/Lab

Hope everyone got to enjoy their time away from the classroom & lab a bit and relax! I'm scared to start next semester because last semester was so brutal, but seriously...there is NO WAY it could be as bad as last semester.

And...when the heck did THIS :naughty: show up?!

Omg Nordi, don't tell me this!!! 😱 😱 very scary.

I'm so glad!! 😀 I was worried for you after reading your posts. I'm glad you're going to give the course instructor a piece of your mind. It seems like too many students are afraid of voicing their opinions when things go badly. Here's hoping spring semester is easier for us all!

Comparative anatomy
Physiology 3 (gut and endocrine metabolism)
Pathology
Immunology
Parasitology

And I think everything but physio and path are lab classes.

Uhh... path has labs too.

Immuno labs are more often just lectures during the lab time slot... so that only sorta counts.

And path lab is easy/kinda fun. So don't sweat it.

I didn't think parasit lab was bad at all... just poop.

As for anatomy... I hope your group is good, and good luck. Like I always say, if *I* can do it, you certainly can too.

Well, the people we lost....let me see...out of the 5 I know of for sure, only 2 were for academic reasons, and one supposedly never came to labs and just kind of blew off school.

First semester was probably harder than normal for c/o 2016 because we were "guinea pigs" for a new class that started in the middle of October that was SUPPOSED to take material out of Anatomy & Physiology and create a new Neuroscience course. So, they DID take the stuff from the other courses and make a new course, but they also went more in-depth and detailed with it. I guess Anatomy & Physiology were supposed to "lighten up" on their course loads at that point, but they didn't (and may have even added stuff in...) 😡 Needless to say, in the course evaluations, I'm pretty sure my class told 'em what's up. :naughty: (I hope they weren't too rude about it!) Hopefully that will make things better for the class of 2017!

Regardless, I'll make sure you don't have to freak out as badly as I did!

Wheeew that makes me feel better.... Why would you blow off vet school?! That's crazy to me, but oh well. I will def ask about the neuro class at my interview

If you look at VMSAR data for students lost from classes, Mizzou (and I think second, A&M?) tend to lose the most students by like... a lot.

I'm kind of excited to start second semester... all the upperclassmen keep saying how much better it was than first semester, so hopefully that's true. :naughty: (they got rid of my fingers crossed emoticon from the quick list, I think I'm just gonna use naughty instead...)

Good to hear! 🙂

We've only lost one student that I'm aware of, for non-academic reasons, but it's possible we lost more after finals.

Next quarter we have:
Anatomy (abdomen and thorax)
Physiology (mainly cardiac, respiratory, and GI)
Neurobiology
Histology
Critical Clinical Thinking
Imaging

For electives I'm taking comparative zoo anatomy, shelter medicine I, and reptile medicine and surgery

We don't have a cardiologist at the U of I so one is visiting to teach us cardiac physiology in 12 one hour lectures jammed into one week. Boo.

Glad everything worked out for you Nordicat!

Everyone has been telling us that this semester coming up is the toughest semester 🙁.

I heard about that from a vet I worked for. She went there for vet school, and I think was friends with the cardiologist who left. Could be mistaken though. I'm hoping things don't move too fast for you. Do you know where the cardiologist is coming from?

I'm hoping it doesn't move too fast either. It'll also be rough since he's only there for that week and if we have questions later on I'm not sure if/how we'll be able to contact him. He's from Georgia.
