MD & DO Co’22 ERAS Panic Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I have a couple of interviews that specifically said they were interviewing me for both tracks.
Thats awesome. Yale PC interviewed me but I want the categorical track and not sure how to go about it bc I dont want to shoot myself in the foot and then be like hey but I want categorical instead lol and then be like DNRd at both. I want to anonymously ask someone there if I am able to switch to categorical once im there

How bad is it to miss a pre-interview social, do you guys think?

It's going to be unavoidable. One program I've gotten an invite from holds one social per set of interviews - and it's not the day before any of the interviews. I have conflicts with *every single social date* - with pre-interview socials at other programs. So no matter what I end up doing, I'm going to have to miss at least one social for at least one program.

Kinda thinking that I should miss the social at the problem one, because there's no way they don't understand that with offering a social at a non-standard time (i.e. not the night before) that they're going to cause problems for candidates. I feel like it would be worse to miss a social the night before an interview, because you should expect to be free to go to a social then. Idk.
I would honestly skip the one at the program you're least interested in. But if that's hard to pick, then sure, fair to skip the one scheduled at an odd time. I don't think you'll get bumped down for not being able to attend, but do think worth mentioning to them you regret you'll miss because of an unavoidable conflict.

who are you guys writing the LOI to if the only email you can find is the program coordinator? Like are you saying Dear (program coordinator name) or something like "To the residency committee" ? sorry if stupid question lol
I would address to PD, but also think "to the residency committee" is fine. Could also address the email itself to PC and then ask them to please pass on the attached PDF, which you address to committee or PD. Ultimately unlikely to make or break anything.

Someone calm me down?

Received an invite from a program today. They asked us to provide our preferred dates. I did so via ERAS mail reply.

No departmental email was provided, no ERAS/Thalamus/IB scheduler mentioned.

The end said “I prefer you communicate through ERAS”

Provided my list of dates this AM via ERAS mail. No confirmation as of yet.

How long do I wait to reach out? Perhaps 24-48 hours then email the coordinator? I want to give them time to schedule and respond but this is longer than any other program has taken so far.

Chill pill has been taken but bioavailability is low.

Wait a while. I had a program do this and they took over a week to get back to me with my date.

the one program i had do things this way took 3 days to get back. i would not reach out. they will get back to you when they can. remember that they are very busy.

I just sent out 10 LOIs. I don't know how anyone could do more than 10-15 without straight-up lying or having huge families. *sigh*.

I’m already struggling with writing ones where I have no personal connections. Both sides of my family are condensed in two areas and I went to undergrad in one of them so I’m not sure how to write more that still sound genuine since a lot of my reasons could apply to multiple programs.

I'm going to do the same today.

I think there's more reasons to be interested than having family there. I sent LOIs to places I vacationed frequently talking about the stuff I loved about the area, the place I got married (same idea), the place I got a med school acceptance and loved it but only passed it up because my husband's job didn't have a location there and another acceptance did, where I grew up, where he grew up, locations near my med school because I love that area, and ones near the cities where I did aways letting them know I did aways in the region and loved it. Plus places I have family, or had family in the past since some of my family members have moved a lot lol

Written 7 so far (three yesterday) and have 10 or so more planned. Gonna knock those out today, I think.

do people send post interview thank you emails?
I got too burnout on it after a month. Matched at a place I didn’t send a thank you note.

There was one program that gave us info at the beginning for thank you notes. Seemed expected there so I did it then.

Super frustrating to see two personal top programs ignore me after reaching out to both of them well before the cycle started, having strong regional ties, personalizing a PS, being competitive stats-wise (I see them interviewing people with step 1 20+ points under mine), having a LOR from a physician at one of the programs, and sending LOIs to both! I assume there's not anything more I can do for those programs. Otherwise have had several LOIs result in interviews!
Maybe there was something missing from your app that they were looking for? Something unique hence why the ties and step didn’t matter as much.

Reached out via LOI and got crickets.. re emailed these same programs a couple of weeks later saying hey remember me ? I’m still bugging you because I want a shot. 3 out of 4 responded positively with interviews. Happy but also concerned that they didn’t really like me after a initial screen and a second request to view my app and not sure how much I can change their mind with an interview compared to programs that liked me initially. But will make the best out of it. I’m not taking No for an answer!! Lol jk I was super scared and only did it because I felt comfortable with the IV I had. Know this could possibly piss programs off and backfire luckily I got away with it.

Wow nice success story! Did you reach out both times to the PD?

Heck ya love this! How long did you wait in between? 1 week? 2 weeks?

what is the proper etiquette with cancelling interviews that were scheduled for 1+ month away? Do I just cancel on ERAS or should i contact the program faculty as well?

Realistically how long did it take yall to prep for an interview? Im trying to plan and figure out how many days in between I should have between them minimum so i am not unprepared. Obviously avoiding back to back interview days. Did it take you a week to prep a day a few days? trying to gauge

Honestly I don't do a ton of prep for interviews. I've been going through the program's website and reading comments about the program on the spreadsheets from prior years the night before my interview so I have some talking points if I get asked "why this program". I have an answer for the "tell me about yourself" and have my reasons for wanting to do EM tied into that answer, and I have a list of generic questions to ask (most of which are answered during the program overview or resident socials) but I really don't do anything else. I feel like too much prep would make me sound rehearsed and not genuine and most of my interviews have been very conversational so I kind of just go with the flow.

Right now I've only had one interview per week but will start doing two a week in mid-November and I think as long as you have a day or two in between, that's more than enough. I'll be doing a lot of Monday/Thursday interviews through Christmas and with everything being virtual, it seems like it'll be pretty manageable.

What do you mean by prep? I started a big spreadsheet while choosing programs to apply to where I’ve filled in a bunch of info on each program, so I pretty much just review that (and fill in some gaps as needed) and Google my interviewers if they gave me the names. Maybe a couple hours max per program and most of that prep was done before applying tbh. idk what you could be doing for a week

practicing behavioral questions. thats my fear I am not very good at bull****ting on the spot. some of the behavioral questions Ive seen on these spreadsheets or on reddit are ridiculous Id crash and burn if I was hit with some of those

For my first interview I wrote down the answers to all the common questions like "why us, why IM, tell me about yourself" etc. Since that first interview, now I just skim the programs website the night before and write down a few things that I would say if they say "why us" and that's it. So time spent prepping is like 10-15 mins per interview. Haven't had any issues so far.

I ad-lib. Did my research before applying, jot down the structural questions during resident time (how’s X/Y/Z?) and ask faculty-specific questions during interviews

A quick google search of each interviewer is all I do day-of. For example, one of my interviewers had a ton of research in palliative medicine, and I have a background in doing some hospice stuff, so I was able to bring that up. I’m super careful, though, because you don’t want to come across as a know-it all or OVERLY prepared like you’re compensating. I prefaced what I said by literally saying, “I do a quick google search of all the faculty I interview with, and I noticed you…” so that it didn’t seem pretentious

I have some back to back. It's not bad, they really don't require that much prep. Just read up on the program a bit the day before so you know what to say if they ask "why us".

I have heard from PD that they hate people who look them up. So I would mention stuff that I know we had in common without specifically saying you stalked them.

Any fellow rads applicants freaking out about having <10 invites?
Sitting on 5 IR and 3 DR... which feels like absolute dog crap. Resigned to matching one of my IM backups lol.

The only saving grace is one of the interviews is combined IR/DR and DR only from an audition... and I'm from their target area (the state next door), in their target scores, and I thought I got along with all of them well and honored the rotation. So maybe I'll be fine, but I really thought I'd have bigger numbers than this. Especially for DR!!!

Dude, I’m sitting at 7 DR. I’m feeling the squeeze. I know it was 90%+ matching in 2020, but this is a different time and a lot has changed. Kinda concerned at this point.

Yeah. I know everyone’s saying that there were a lot of people in 2021 applying rads as a backup, but those 60% ish match numbers last year were horrifying regardless of whether all of those people actually wanted rads or not. I’m starting to think this year’s going to be in the 60% range, too.

I’ve only gotten one rads interview out of region so far so that’s what’s really killing me. Wish I’d had the foresight to take an out of region med school acceptance so I could have had stronger ties to multiple regions instead of having my home address and my med school in the same region. Maybe that would have helped.

I moved out of region for med school. Only got one interview in my hometown region, the rest were near my med school. If that helps you feel any better

None from my home region and all from where my school is, so I wouldn't sweat that too much.

Wait, what were the 60%ish match numbers you’re talking about?

I know people keep saying interviews will trickle in as people cancel but like.... I'm certainly not feeling great about it. Thought my app was decent but starting to have doubts

So like at the end of every interview every program says if you have any questions, feel free to email us. Like the residents/chiefs, the PD, etc. This is probably neurotic as hell, but....I don't really have any further questions but I feel like maybe I should come up with some to appear more interested (not for every program, just for my top ones)? Or does this not really matter/just a formality to say?

No, no. I don't think this is necessary at all. This is the point of LOIs later in the cycle. You're all good.

Haven’t done any prep whatsoever. I know my story and I know what I’ve done and where I want to be. That’s all that happens in an interview. “Tell me about you”, “tell me about this project/work”, “tell me where you see yourself” then the “what questions do you have for me…”

I’m not sure how you are pulling off not having back to back interviews. But I would say don’t do that at the detriment of getting the best interview dates/not waiting until late cycle. Every week I have back to back interviews, at least two or 3 of them. From now until early January. It’s just what it is. Not my fave of this process.

I find it’s so much easier to just ask them about their role/work and let them decide what to highlight and then pivot off that. I also find that they choose to highlight specific parts of their work that they think would be relevant/applicable to me. Many have talked to me about current proposals/grants, administrative efforts that aren’t easily found on search and those become my rich in our conversation than a random article in their piba that May not actually be important to them anymore.

I don’t Google anyone. Just my approach! I understand why others choose to research interviewers. (Plus we meet 8-15 faculty members in a single day)

Probably bc I only have 10 interviews rn not 20 like some of you so Im able to get away with not having back to back and not sure why anyone should be actually going on 20+ interviews theres really no need
