Cornell 2024-2025 (c/o 2029 hopefuls)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Last week I couldn't sleep and went down the rabbit hole of reading all the past Cornell threads on SDN. Yes, all of them...what can I say I make sure to do my homework 😳 One year they actually ran out of people on the wait list and called a couple people who were rejected in August. Doubt they'll be making the same mistake again but there are a fair number of OOS accepted who ultimately decline for affordability reasons or to attend a school that better fits their niche interest.

An Easter egg if you go through the old threads a video of the male vet students' parody of Uptown Funk 🤣
Edit: oh and they also sold a calendar as a fundraiser with photos of the more "hunky" male students holding cute animals. I'm old enough to remember when "hunky firefighter" calendars were a thing.
do you by any chance know when the waitlist started moving?

No, why would you tell me that they ran out of alternates one time 😭

It doesn't move until April, in the week preceding April 15.
oo i see. does anyone who accepts from the waitlist have a hard time finding housing? just because its closer to the start time? thats something that worries me a lot

Unless you're moving with a lot of pets you should be fine. If you get off the waitlist in April/May. If you were pulled super late there's usually undergrads desperately trying to offload single-semester sublets over the summer.

im coming in with 2 possibly 3 cats 🙁 now im anxious LOL

Pretty sure no waitlist movement until April. Most movement in April-May. Late summer is highly unusual and would only be if a committed student withdrew last-minute due to personal reasons.
thank you so much for all of the info <3

OOS alternate! We’re all waiting for other schools to release decisions so it’s unlikely that the waitlist will move before April so crossing fingers!! ᵕ̈

Does anyone plan on going to the informational session? I cannot attend any of the dates due to my internship in Florida beginning, but was wondering if anyone could post some goods/bads of the program and Ithaca they learn from going!

I'm laughing so hard. I went to the doctor to work with and asked her when she graduated, she said 2015 I showed her the video and she was like yea those are my classmates then proceeded to tell me about each of the 5 in the video. The one shirtless under the lab coat used to ride a unicycle around.

If anyone who was accepted is willing to provide their stats, it would be much appreciated!

IS acceptance! First school I've heard back from! Ofc this happens after I was stressing over my LIU interview yesterday for no reason😩 Can't wait to meet everyone🙂

Hi! I had a 4.0 GPA, majored in Biomedical Sciences and minored in Spanish and Chem, originally a premed major so had published research in human medicine and worked on the covid unit at the hospital for two years. Also did research in Organic chemistry education. Switched to vet med during my gap year, 1,500+ hours in small animal general practice, equine internship, shadowed lab animal, zoo medicine, and bovine medicine. Also did 5 humanitarian aid service trips to El Salvador, 1 to Guatemala, and 1 in Istanbul. TA’d for organic chemistry and A&P in college

Congrats 🎉🎉🎉 so excited to be meeting you all 🙂

OOS (international, from Toronto, Canada) acceptance.

I have been in shock for the last few days. I signed up for the info session on February 21 (my 22 birthday!). I have no idea how to go about finding housing, but I will be coming with one (maybe two) cats, and would love to live with other CVM students. Feel free to PM me or message me on instagram (@ mina.63).

Also, if anyone is familiar with the process of getting a student VISA for the US as a Canadian, please let me know!

Are the info sessions in person only?

My parents keep pushing me to write a supplement letter to address new experiences I have acquired since submitting the VMCAS application to gain a more favorable chance to move off the waitlist. I personally don't think a few hundred hours would make a significant difference and think the waitlist for OOS is already ranked. Also I assume the admissions committee takes account of possible new/increasing experiences the applicant can potentially achieve and select them to be part of the class/waitlist. What does everyone else think?

I highly doubt you can get your spot on a waitlist changed, it's likely already set for OOS and IS students!

I'm going (prob the 14th or 21st)! PM if you have specific things you want me to look out for ☺️

That's what I think too! Pretty sure we are already ranked already but who knows :/ I am attending the info session on the 21st!

Rule of thumb is that veterinary schools don’t take into account letters of continued interest. They would then have to consider new experiences for every applicant. It won’t change your outcome unfortunately.

If I remember correctly, they said at an event in November that they don’t use a rank system for alternates. Honestly, might as well shoot your shot, if Cornell is your top choice, maybe more so emphasize that in your letter, and briefly mention your new experiences?

Out of curiosity, if they don't rank us, how would they choose who to bump into an open seat?

I think they said they look at the entire alternate pool each time they need to make an offer (wish I remembered more precisely, sorry!) - perhaps it’s a process of matching based on the stated interest/some characteristic of who declined to an alternate?

I may email them and ask about a numbered list...just in case. Cornell has been my dream school for awhile, and I know OOS waitlists typically move fast, but I want to know if holding out hope is worth it or if I should hold my breath for acceptances in other schools.

Let us know what they say if you do!! I'm also very curious. This is my second waitlist and I'm so anxious about not getting pulled off 😭

Does anyone know what time the info session starts and ends on 2/21? I think I saw the times mentioned somewhere but I can’t find them now

Hi! I emailed admissions regarding waitlist ranking and this is what they said: "Thanks for your email! We actually don’t give out much information about the Alternate List because it is ever changing. If I give you a number and then a couple of people withdraw from the list you won’t have accurate information. So hang in there and know you are on the list!".

Interesting, so it does seem like there is a number system! Ty for letting us know what they said ^^

Would a drinking ticket from freshman year of undergraduate be enough for a rescinded admission?
Loaded question I think bc
1)Are they asking you about it ?
2) are we talking DUI arrest type deal or like a citation for open container?- Ik there’s a section on vmcas to disclose certain kinds of police activity encounters so idk if yours falls under that.
Otherwise I’m not sure they’d ever know about it if you didn’t disclose.

there wasn’t police involvement, just with the university. It was a closed bottle. I was 18. At the time, it was presented as a WARNING for student misconduct, so it completely left my mind after that first semester. Without even thinking I selected “no” on VMCAS, because it genuinely did not cross my mind, but now my university is saying it will be included in the dean’s certification they send over. It isn’t until I graduate (after the due date) that the incident will be removed from everything. I’m so confused and frustrated.
If it’s just a warning I think you should be OK. Maybe reach out to Cornell and be upfront about the situation- explain that it was presented to you as a warning and now they are saying it will be on your record. I think being up front and honest will be beneficial, but if anyone else has had experience with this please chime in! I know the vmcas statement is more like academic dismissal due to plagiarism im not sure if they’d worry about something like you mentioned. I hope the best for you❤️

Hellur! I had a 3.87 CGPA & 3.89 SGPA. This was my first application cycle, applied to 7 schools. So far have been accepted at LMU & rejected from Ohio. I went to CC then transferred to my 4-year (i majored in biology at both). Had preliminary research based in behavioral endocrinology (not published). Had two withdrawals on my transcript. Started getting hours in high school at 16 years old & worked all throughout college ultimately gaining 4,000+ hours combined working in GP & specialty hospital. Major part of my hours were small animal & exotics/wildlife (with & without a vet.) Had like 40 hours of large animal. I was in a veterinary science program in high school. I would say I had quite unique animal based experiences, like i was an intern at a wolf sanctuary. Was a TA for Orgo I & II. I honestly didn't have much community involvement/leadership at my 4-year due to me working more, i got most of it in HS & at the CC. Had a good bit of volunteering hours (not animal related). Lastly, I had a few non-animal related jobs like working at Panera & at a camp. Letter of Recs: Chief of Staff at GP (vet), research advisor/animal behavior professor, orgo professor ( i was also his TA), & Lead Vet Tech.
