Countdown Until December 1st 2017

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Really? How does one leverage their offers without coming across the wrong way? “I’d really love to go here but I just got an acceptance from X school and they offered me a scholarship that’s making the cost significantly different. I love your school but the price difference is what’s giving me a cause to pause...” Idk I think that sounds so weird haha you have a better approach?

Yes, practically how you wrote it. Price is a huge determining factor. It's definitely a risk, but I know at least two people who have been successful. It's something I'd consider if everything were just right.

This surprises me. We (the students) need the schools much more than they need us. I would figure that the second you say "I don't want to come to your school because it's too expensive. Please give me a discounted price." They'll just say "Screw off. Pay full price or we'll find someone who will." Obviously everything would be much more eloquently put, but you get what I'm saying.

Well, both people I know were exceedingly well qualified. I'm sure that played a role.

I am beyond nervous about how my first interview went. The moment just did not feel real, and I'm sure many of you had that feeling too. All the hard work you put in for that moment and when it arrives, you feel like you're dreaming. Anyway, the interview was very chill and filled with laughter. I answered questions honestly, but after my interview, my tour guide was talking to me about everyday life, and she ended the convo with "I hope you get more interviews." WHAT IS THAT SUPPOSED TO MEAN? I know I am probably overreacting, but that particular school is my top choice

The professor who interviewed me said "I wish you the best of luck in your future" and I was like hold up.. does that mean I'm not getting in? lol

She's just wishing you luck on your cycle. Don't overthink it. Pretty sure the tour guide will have no bearing on whether you get accepted or not.

I feel kinda the same way. For mine, my interviewers were so genuine that I don’t know how to asses how well I did. I think some of my responses are average at best. Hopefully I get at least a waitlist lol

Like in terms of just numbers or like... they started their own company type of thing.

In terms of numbers and experiences. They did not start a company, but had a great amount of work experience, for example.

What percentage of a class does everyone think the average school likes to fill up on judgement day (Dec 1st)?

I would think they would like to fill their entire class on December 1st. That would mean they got all their first picks. However, that doesn’t happen, and they turn to their waiting lists.

I know at IU it sounds like they will no longer be doing interviews and will have all seats filled plus waitlist, but that's abnormal.

It is highly dependent on the program. Some like to have as close to a full class on December 1st as possible. Others don't worry about filling their class because they know there are applicants interviewing post-december that they may really like. Personally, I like the latter of the 2 approaches because it shows the program's commitment to finding good students, not just rear ends to fill a seat.

Is this how its always done at IU or just this year? (did the admins tell you that?)

I wonder also, on average, what percent of the people accepted December 1st reject the offer That is to say, if a school has 150 spots to fill on December 1st and interviews 300 people, how many would they have to accept to fill up those 150 spots? These are the things i think about 2 weeks before December 1st. I think about this constantly. I know there is variation but its an interesting thought nonetheless.

I think that would depend on the schools reputation! The better schools can probably expect less rejections from accepted students

The dental college of Georgia does not offer any post december interviews. They have interviews into the first week and then spend the rest of the month working to fill all the seats. They said they like to have their class full by the end of december/beginning of january.

Really wish I would have applied to more schools but I didn't have the money :/ Very nervous about December 1st. Good luck everyone!
How man6 did you apply to, and how many interviews did you get?

Oklahoma doesn’t do post December interviews either. They will gather together on Saturday 18th, and decided who they’re keeping, waitlisting, and rejecting from the interviews they’ve had.

This is how IU is doing it this year (i don't know about other schools). They said this in one of their webinars.

To me it would seem that a school would want to fill up their entire class on December 1st if they could. I mean, by definition, their pre-December interviewees are who they like most.

Well, that's not necessarily true. There are people who applied late, and it's possible that after post-December interviews, the schools like these applicants over their pre-December interviewees.

UNC also changed it up this year and isn't offering any post-December interviews so they'll fill their class early.

Is it work giving schools midterm updates?

Some schools usually highly encourage it. I personally would send an update, especially if your GPA will increase. A school might waitlist you until you send in your latest grades. I know a friend who was waitlisted for a long time and was accepted two days after he sent in his updated grades. Could be a coincidence though, who knows.

Do you guys think it's worth sending schools an email updated hours worked as a dental assistant or is it strictly for grades and DAT?

Unless you had like 10 hours and you can update that to 100, they don't want to hear it. Also, that post was kinda random...

How is it random? This is a dental forum.. Anyways, when I applied I had 200 hours of working and now I'm at a little over 700 thats why I asked.
Contrary to what was said above, I think most schools would appreciate a quarterly update. USC told us this today in our interview, that they want to see you maintain your grades and remain active in the community, and so an emailed quarterly update wouldn't hurt. Hope this helps 🙂

Thanks for the reply! I'll defiantly send updates to schools!

This process has been such a long ordeal. I cannot wait until our countdown is done!! I feel like I'm walking around in a daze most days. Working and class are probably the two main aspects of life saving my mental health at the moment.

one of my best friends got into med school today so I'm so excited for her and also even more ready/ anxious for December 1st to be here!
