Counterpoint to Difficult Vets Thread

As a nice counterpoint to stories of vets hard to work with thread (for example, the last vet I worked with who didn't like the way I MOPPED, for heaven's sake), here's something cool that happened to me at my new vet clinic. I am working for a mixed animal practice, and the vet this week took in someone's Jersey cow and offered to breed her for free, if the owner left her there until it was done. This was entirely done so I can go out and violate that cow every morning for the next 6 weeks with my left arm to learn how to preg check. It is heartening to meet a vet who does want me to learn, and is actually nice to me 🙂

Have any of your vets' done anything as cool as borrow a cow for you? 🙂

Great story! What a nice thing to do for you.

My mentor keeps a debilitated horse in the clinic as a practice horse for blood draws, rads, palpations, etc. He is a sweet old guy. Well, they both are, hehe.

My dogs work as practice puppies for my fellow vet students. They have both had more IVC's than doggie-ly possible over the past 8 years. And, they lay completely still with neck outstretched for jug sticks. Good doggies.

Just last week I left my job to move to AL to go to vet school. As a going away present my doc's bought me a Littman Cardio 3 stethoscope! I've only been there a year and throughout the entire time they go out of their way to help me. Exs- letting me extensively help with stray spays/neuters, getting me just to listen to a bad heart/see gross tumor/look at neat slides, etc, taking time to sit down with me and go through a sx they just did with a textbook so I can see every step they took on paper as well as during the sx. I love practices where the docs care about both their employees and patients! They were always so great with me that I had new employees ask me if I was their cousin or something.

I guess I have two great vets. One vet has been a mentor but I never worked with him. He was actually my cats vet and the first person to encourage me to try for vet school. I stopped by his office on my move from CA to CO. He gave me the grand tour of his facility - which was nice enough. Then he sat with me and chatted, asking about my concerns, and advising me on how things would go, he would give me some contacts in CO, etc. Then he showed me the ultrasounds they have done and what they can find. Showed me a lot of their equipment and their capabilities. Since most of my recent work has been with a shelter I didn't have much experience with a lot of the equipment. He also had an emergency come in and told me to stick around if I want and had me get involved. It was just supposed to be a quick visit so I really appreciated all the time he took.

The second vet is who I worked for at the shelter. One of my favorite things about him was his respect for his staff. He wasn't afraid to throw an idea out there and ask for other ideas from the techs. He was great about always having me listen to heart murmurs, feel tumors, etc. He always explained procedures as he did them. And any questions I asked he was more than willing to answer.

I feel very lucky to have had some great experiences.

That's a really nice thing to do, but also a really responsible thing to do for the profession by getting you into LA 👍
