I know that there is already a thread created for this; however, I would like a more specific discussion that touches on specifics related to each school.

My point of view should help this discussion.

The good for each.
I believe that the curriculum at NYMC prepares students VERY well for the boards. As a result, students acquire the residencies of their choice (much more in Surg, Radio, Anesthesia, etc.. and the Children's Hospital.. wow..

Creighton is in a "college town." Which means there is "stuff" around the school. The students seemed very nice and genuinely happy to be there. I believe that I might be "happier" there because I liked the pace of everything, but am not sure if happiness should outweigh the stats (NYMC's of course)

The bad:
NYMC students seemed more high-strung than any other school i visited. Also, there was nothing in the immediate vicinity of the school. I realize that manhattan and new england are close by, but how often will I have the time to travel to those places anyway?

Creighton has an ugly price tag (even though I can pay for it, I still want to obtain the best education)... It is in the middle of nowhere and it takes 6+ hours to drive to a "city." Also, I'm concerned about the hospital there losing so much money, doctors leaving, and the dated facility.

I hope people on here will chime in and help me out!

Thankyou in advance!

NYMC and creighton are both on level playing fields..i doubt one helps you prepare better for the boards then the others..go to the cehapper one or the one youll enjoy more.

Shouldn't you have withdraw from one by now?

I agree...I would go with the cheaper one...even though you can pay for both, why not go to the cheaper one and save some money? Also, I personally would go to the one where I would get more experience and would probably prepare me better for being a doctor. But that is just me...

Also, didn't you already have to make a decision?

NYMC's price tag isn't too pretty either...I actually think it would cost you a little more during third and fourth year to go to NYMC because you'll likely end up doing rotations and living in NYC, unless you got a scholarship of course. This also allows for the time you want to spend in these areas (which you listed as a con): I think you definitely will if you select the right hospitals for the clinical years.

I personally didn't experience a sense of being "high strung" among the students I met when I was there for my interview but I guess this all depends on personal experience. I was actually stuck up there for two days because of bad weather, and I'm glad I was because I got to meet a ton more people that way and had fun. I agree in that I think NYMC does prepare its students well and it has a decent of a match list as I can discern for not really knowing much about the process, but this is also individual-dependent.

All in all, I liked NYMC but I think you feeling you'd be "happier" at Creighton says a lot as well. My point is that you may have just not met the right people while at NYMC, but look at the cost for each school. If there's a significant difference then go to the cheaper one. If its not a whole lot, you seem like you'd be happier at Creighton because they are pretty much equal.

Good luck on your decision.

gotcha.

I had to decide on my other options already.. but, i just got NYMC's acceptance email yesterday morning and am waiting for the actual packet in the mail. I figure i have 2 days until that arrives and I will make my decision then.

It seems that Creighton and NYMC are just about the same as far as cost, and almost everything else. Regardless, one spot will be opening up at either school.

Thanks for the responses.

You'll only get a "Terms and Conditions" form, letter of acceptance, and a sheet of paper with important phone numbers on it...pretty anti-climactic actually. Really you need to question if sacrificing happiness is worth it for the better location, and if you want to get a residency in the NYC area -- it wouldn't be for me, so it seems Creighton is the better fit for you. Medical school is hard enough if you're miserable in the wrong location and you can get used to being that far away from a major city if being in a college town occupies you.

Living expenses is certainly a consideration to think about. Westchester isn't downtown NYC but it isn't the midwest either...
