Hi, does anyone know any current or past CSU students that would be willing to answer some questions about the program?

Hello! Is there anyone that can confidently say if an upper level organic chemistry course could or could not satisfy a portion of the credit hours required for CSUCVM's "Addt'l Upper-Division Biomedical Sciences Coureses" prerequisites? I've tried contacting their admissions team, but I haven't received a response yet. Thank's in advance!

Hey - they're pretty specific about their upper levels, I do NOT think it would count. They list them out on their website - copying below.

  • Includes: Junior-level undergraduate courses or higher-level courses in anatomy, cancer biology, developmental biology, endocrinology, epidemiology, histology, immunology, infectious disease, metabolism, microbiology, molecular biology, necropsy, neurology/neuroscience, nutrition, organ physiology, parasitology, pathology, pharmacology, toxicology, virology. Graduate courses of similar content are also acceptable.
  • Does not include: Courses in animal disease prevention/management, behavior, biometry, communication, conservation biology, dairy/beef systems, ecology, equine/livestock management, equine science, evolution, herpetology, human-animal interactions, ichthyology, insemination, lab animal science, mammalogy, oceanography, ornithology, poultry science, small animal science, swine science, vet laboratory principles, welfare, and zoology.

From this, I'd assume that you need to show that you'll complete something in those categories, or at least within biomedical. Good luck!

Are there no interviews this year? I don't see it on the timeline.

Hi! They stopped interviews in 2020 with Covid and there’s no indication they’ll bring them back.

Hello! I am curious to know how the dual program and regular admissions pool acceptances work. I was reading through last years thread and it said you need to get a rejection from the regular pool, and maybe a few days later you will get an acceptance to the other programs. Is this true? I applied for the MPH/DVM and just trying to put together a hypothetical timeline in my head. Thanks!

Here's the info from the website.

"When decisions are released, if you receive an OFFER to the D.V.M./M.P.H. program, you will not be further considered in the regular DVM admissions pool, regardless of whether or not you accept or decline the D.V.M./M.P.H. offer. If you are denied or designated as an alternate for the D.V.M./M.P.H. program, your application will be considered in the regular D.V.M. admissions pool."

D.V.M. and M.P.H. Combined Degree Program - College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences

So if you get into the DVM/MPH program you are expected to accept the spot. If you don't get into the DVM/MPH program, you will be considered for the standard DVM program.

Because the dual programs are often on their own timelines, you may not get an admission's decision at the same time as the traditional applicants.

Thank you! I read that information prior to applying but it seemed based on responses here that they received their admissions offers regardless of program around the same time, and that some students received a DVM pool rejection and then received a dual degree acceptance a few days later. I spoke to a CSU student who said she only got a MPH/DVM offer and never received a DVM only rejection like other applicants had said they received haha. Just a lil’ confusing!

So do we typically hear back about joint programs (UAF/CSU) before just CSU since we get put in that pool after if we don’t get in? Does anyone know when people typically hear about the UAF/CSU program?

So kind of in answer to you both, I got my normal applicant pool denial in my portal first and then my UAF/CSU waitlist came like maybe half an hour later and it was just a blurb at the top of my portal. (Some people I believe got their normal pool denial and the UAF/CSU acceptance at like that same exact time). I think the other dual programs (MPH and PhD) are different because they require interviews separate to vet school so I feel like the people I saw waiting to hear back last year waited a different amount for those other dual program options (MPH and PhD versus UAF/CSU).

The general idea last year was that getting a denial from the regular CSU program does not mean a denial for UAF/CSU and getting a denial for UAF/CSU does not mean a denial for the regular CSU program. You can be on a waitlist for either or both basically. However, if you get accepted to the UAF/CSU program right off the bat I believe that means you can no longer be considered for the CSU regular program pool. (it's been a hot second since I looked at that last part though so take that with a grain of salt).

Does anyone's portal still say their VMCAS App and Lor have not been received? I submitted my VMCAS and CSU supplemental early September and every other school I have applied to has confirmed their receipt of my application. Just worried I am missing something but they haven't communicated that any part of my application is missing/incomplete.

On the portal it says when they will show as verified and received. Oct 31st.

Got it! I interpreted it as they haven't received it and it must be by that date. Thanks!
No worries! Yeah they do a data freeze, collection and then update the portal on the 31st that it was received.

Does anyone know the timeline for vet prep acceptances? Will I receive a rejection for the regular application pool before potentially being accepted into vet prep? The closer I get the more nervous I am! Second time applying for CSU Prep program.

I believe they’re sent at the same time. You either get an acceptance/rejection to vet school or acceptance to vet prep. They accept 20 students for vet prep (I think).

I've heard a lot of applicants saying that they will regret applying to CSU since PROP 129 got passed, and that they wouldn't go if they got accepted. Has this changed any of your opinions? Personally, If I get accepted, then I will certainly be going.

I agree, CSU is still one of the best vet schools in the US, I don’t have a huge understanding of the PROP 129, but have seen the negative opinions, but personally I couldn’t pass up an opportunity to go to CSU

The price of CSU does it for me tbh. I was given the opportunity to attend the UAF/CSU program and ultimately decided the 400+k of debt was not 1) worth it or 2) a debt hole I’d ever crawl out of lol

Oos. CSUs COA for oos is around 92k or something per year which I personally would have needed all of bc I have no financial support. The UAF program also has 2-3k a semester fees to the Alaska university plus other fees not paid to CSU so for me it just wasn’t financially feasible :/ I would have also needed to buy a new vehicle that was winterized bc my current car is a 2003 Toyota so 😎 she wasn’t gonna make it there. But yea for that PLUS interest on the loans I’d be easily hitting over 400k

Where did you decide to go instead? if you dont mind me asking

Hello everyone! Does anyone here know how competitive acceptance into the vet prep program is and what admissions favors in deciding who is deemed "disadvantaged"? Thank you for any input on this matter 🙂

In the CSU portal it states the disadvantages that qualify you for a vet prep spot. There is no secret right answer or one that is more favorable than the other. I’m pretty sure there’s only 10 vet prep seats.

Thank you! I already applied to CSU and selected that I wanted to be considered for vet prep. I continued to write about what shortcomings I experienced at several points in my life. I was just curious to read anything promising to gauge what my chances were given my background. 10 seats is small, but so is vet school 😳 I'd be interested in knowing how many students actually select the vet prep option on their application.

If you look at last year's thread, I think there were at least 15 people who got accepted to the program/waitlisted then accepted. If you read some of their WAMC, you can see where they feel they were disadvantaged to gauge the applicant pool. It's not a guarantee it will be the same, but it should be similar. I would say several hundred apply for the Vet Prep program.

I'm in the same boat. I'm pretty sure I would accept a CSU offer if I was lucky enough to get an acceptance, especially if it was my only "yes". Now, if I had other options, then I would weigh all aspects of each school and go from there. But at this point, it's not looking good and all I hear are crickets from 2/3 of the schools I applied to.

Does anyone know if those who don't make it through the "early academic review" get a rejection letter earlier than the rest? Or if all decisions go out at the same time in January?
The wait is starting to really get to me. :arghh:

I’ve been denied twice via early academic review and both times did not hear until everyone else in January:/ I know the waiting it brutal. Hang in there, friend

I am gritting my teeth especially for CSU vet prep :arghh: Anyone else?

That would be amazing, but scary too! Did you elect vet prep too?

Also applied for the MPH DVM! Any ideas on how many spots there are?
I cannot find alot of information of that tbh. But I would assume maybe 25-50 people? since it's not a guarantee you get into the DVM program, I'm sure they want to keep numbers low incase everyone DOES maintain a 3.0 and matriculate into the next class. (Plus with the in-state tuition you get through being domicile).
