DMU class of 2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
The events that are planned for us really sound good. I'll be out there Monday (especially as I still need to find a place to live). Hope to see many of our classmates there.

They're great you guys. We only had 4 days last year but they expanded them this year. Karaoke should be an interesting night. I plan on belting a few tunes out and if Lucky and Cremaster get drunk enough, they will too. Go Bears!

respek!

me want to know if da DO take da same board exam as da MD.

DO's take the COMLEX
MD's take the USMLE

Some DO's take both....to increase their opportunities for certain residencies.

There are many factors to consider in this.

big up to da transformers in disguise!

i undastand... what would you do? do you take COMLEX and USMLE or only one or da other?

respek

DO's generally do well on both exams if they study for both. COMLEX is similar to the curriculum that you take a dmu, while the USMLE tends to have more biochemistry and genetics, which dmu doesn't necessarily focus on as much. The fellowship is pretty difficult to get. Everyone who wants it applies at the end of their second year and then you get interviewed by members of the department and the current fellows. They make their decision based on these interviews and your performance thus far in OMM. Hopefully that answered your questions, if not just post again and I'll try to clarify.

big ups to da master of cre...very helpful and me undastand. I be sure to talk me best when me interview wif de fellows for da fellowship.

OMM Fellowship

1) There is no Grade Point Average requirement for and OMM Fellowship, but most fellows have a Written average of about 90%, and a practical average of about 92%.

2) To be more competitive to become and OMM Fellow
a) Apply to be an OMM TA.
1) The more quality a TA you are, the more Dr Boesler, and the other
fellows will notice you.
2) The number of hours you TA has an impact as well, but quantity will
not make up for poor quality.
3) TA?s usually work 2 hours a week, but you can get more if you like.
4) About 35 hours a semester is what the current fellows did as a second
year medical student.

b) Observe Treatments and assist Dr Boesler and fellows during your
second year. Use your best judgement on how often and when you do
this. It can be overdone.

c) As a UAAO member, bringing in Speakers on OMM is favorable.

d) Participation in OFL (Osteopathic Finish Line)

3) Fellows-candidates are interviewed for about half an hour by Dr Boesler, Dr Wooley, and the other fellows. There is also a 5 page application to fill out.

4) After the interview, all the members of the OMM department have a vote. Each candidate is rated 1-10, 10 being lowest, 1 being best. The lowest scores win the fellowships.

5) After the interviews, 3-4 weeks pass until the new fellows are announced.

6) 3 fellows are selected from each class.

7) One year to the total years of medical school is added in 4 month blocks of OMM. There are two responsibilities of fellows

a) Pt Care for Dr Boesler?s patients

b) Teach in labs. 2 lectures in each 4 month block. 6 total lectures.

8) There is an evaluation of each fellow written up at the end of each block.

9) Being a fellow is a good way to increase your competitiveness for residencies.
Recent Fellows have gone into residencies in:
a) Family Practice
b) General Surgery (3)
c) Obstetrics (4)
d) Pediatrics (2)
e) Emergency Medicine (4)
f) Orthopedics (3)

10) People perform research in OMM during their fellowships.

11) Benefits of a Fellowship are:
a) Public speaking experience
b) Clinical experience
c) Patient Care experience

12) Money
a) 5th year of tuition is paid for
b) a stipend for 36 months is provided
c) All expenses trip to OMM convention each year

13) This year?s fellows will be announced near the end of February.
