DMU-COM Discussion thread 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
What is making me antsy is that there were people on here who were complete around the same time as me who got interview invites a week ago.

I know, the wait is killing me too. DMU is the only school that I've heard from. I'm having the same problem with 10 other schools (been complete for about 3.5 weeks now) 🙁

I'm trying to just be thankful for the interview invite I have 😉

I hope you hear from DMU soon! :luck:

I know -- the waiting is the WORST. There are some schools that I have been complete at for more than 8 weeks! Still no word...

Yeah I just got the e-mail. I think I am going to pay them a visit, along with KCUMB (where I am also on hold, although the VP of admissions has told me that I am likely to get an interview), to do some brown-nosing, and check out the schools. In the event that I am accepted to one of the places that I already have interviews set up, I want to know whether or not I should hold out for one of these others, so I think visiting would be a good idea.

Yeah, paying them a visit is a good idea . . . I never thought of that!😀 I can't believe you're on hold at DMU! I tell ya, getting an interview is not always based on logic; it's pure luck (at least in my case). They didn't flat out reject you, so there is still a chance. Good luck at your other 2 interviews! One is next week right? :luck:

aww. man sucks, but at least u didnt get a rej like i did. im probably gonna fly out to nycom's event and ccoms too.try to get a leg up on the competition and check out the school.

I'm telling you... my application is weird. Some people don't know quite what to make of it.

I have LECOM-B next week. I really like the combination of PBL and prosection anatomy lab. If I really like them, and I get accepted, I may just close up shop early. I do want to at least look at a few other schools before I do that though.

Whats the dress code for DMU's OMM lab? shirtless and all that? or scrubs???

Unless to go to Boner's and I private Al Natural OMM session. There you will master the palpatory skills of OMM in the dark with the only light supplied by scented candles and meditation music in the background. We can only handle so much palpation at one time, but we have 4 spots open for the ladies of class 2012. sign up here:

I don't know of any schools that give second years time to prepare for boards. I know that DMU provides students with a Kaplan course for the boards. Outside of that, studying for your classes is studying for the boards. Most medical schools base their curriculum on what students need to know for the boards.

What I meant was how many weeks off from classes students get, before the clinical year starts, to study? Obviously no school specifically gives time off for the boards, but usually 2nd year ends end of May or beginning of June, and students get about 3 weeks to study for boards before clinicals start at the beginning of July. I heard that currently DMU students start in August, but that may be moved up to July. I was just curious if this is true, and how much "time off" there is after 2nd year for which one can go "all out" for boards. That's all. I can't remember which school it was, but I remember reading that those students had classes till middle of June, and only had two weeks or so for board time before clinicals.

I'm interviewing at KCOM in November, and I'm going to make a three-day trip out of it. I've set up a visit to DMU and KCUMB, where I am also on hold, and I want to check them out, and maybe meet with some admissions people.

If LECOM-B is everything I'm hoping, and I get in there, this trip will give me an idea if I should take that and call it a day, or if I should hold out for another offer.

Definately come check us out, try to get ahold of Mrs. Rehmann (admission Director) she is super cool. I know they will set up a private tour for you if you come down to see the campus.

I already have an appointment set up to meet with some people. Not sure if she is going to be there or not, but I am meeting with people in "Enrollment Management"

I know two docs here in Austin who are DMU grads. One is a dermatologist who runs a freaking incredible practice: Austin Skin Institute, and the other is an ER doc at the trauma center.

The lady who sent me the e-mail to confirm my visit is Alaina.

So I was complete at DMU about a month ago, and now I find out through email that my application is offically on Hold status...so be it.

Don't let toohotinvegas do OMM on you unless you have no back problems and don't mind the "fasttrack" straight (head-first) into pelvic OMT and IT spreads:laugh:

 I don't know what all that means, but it sounds kinky. 😉

In all seriousness, I'm praying that I get into DMU (I have my interview November 16th). You guys seem like my kind of people. 😀

Kinky? you haven't seen nothing yet. This week we learned how to pop the pubic symphysis (aka the pudes). Oh its gonna be good times :meanie:.

Also if you are "preying" to God you might get smited, but if you "pray" you might get an acceptance 😉.

Your just jealous you havent mastered the pelvis* OMT thrust with a double twist 😀.

Man, I love you guys too. It's going to be hella hard for some other school to rip me away from DMU ^_^

Question for current DMU students: do rotations during 3rd year have to be in state? When exactly do people apply for residencies and whether there is enough time to do a rotation of my own interest before application?

Although I am not a current Des Moines student when I was there for an interview the Clinical Director told us that all 3rd year rotations would now be in the Iowa "area" to have better access to the resources at the school, they fell that is very important is is one of the reasons they are now going to keep student in-state for 3rd year. Des Moines is a killer school.... no DO school has facilities like DMU! I am really torn between DMU and TCOM at this point but LECOM-Erie offered me a scholarship that is renewable over all 4 years.... tough decision!

if there are any current dmu students. I know ppl do rotations all over in the 4th year. How are these locations picked? Is it a lottery system or do the students have a choice. Any help would be great

If you choose LECOM based soley on a scholarship you will HATE your life. Granted, I'm partial, I'm a MS1 at DMU, but LECOM is a horrible school, and I would seriously think twice about accepting a school for only financial reasons (this is the foundation to the career you will have for the rest of your life). Personally, that is not a tough decision.

Why do you say LECOM is a horrible school?

Any school that offers a 3 year degree is ridiculous!!! Do you have any idea how much info there is to digest, I can't believe its done in four years, I could easily see an argument in favor of 5 years! I would not EVER go to a school that thinks it can train me, as a primary care clinician of all things-the need to know the most. Take my 2 cents, this isn't a LECOM bashing forum.

I would personally never go into that 3-year program, but that doesn't really say anything about the quality of their 4-year program.

Year 3 for our class will be mainly in Iowa except like 40-60 of us, so 2012 maybe, less who knows. 4th year is 90% elective time, so you choose were you want them at (this is same for all schools md/do)

Next DO NOT BASH LECOM IN MY THREADgo to their thread and bash them

Thank you😀

So, I know it's late in the game, but I got an interview invite today... I called Jamie to follow-up on my app (complete 10/10/07) and she said she'd love to have me come interview!! I'm supposed to get an email tomorrow with a date....

Dont worry we interview people late into the spring.

It’s definitely not late in the game . . . chill.

Congrats on the interview! :luck:

I would not say it is horrible... not even close! But it is definitely the least desirable of the three schools I interviewed although the ISP is appealing. I felt the best at DMU and TCOM, they are great schools! Of course you should not base your entire decision on financial considerations but in reality they are very important... and I am personally trying to get through with the least debt possible. I am really leaning towards TCOM even though the high percentage of primary care matches is eye opening since I doubt I will end up there!

Think about who goes to TCOM. There are 7 medical schools in TX that are specialist factories. TCOM gets the people who want to go into primary care. But you can certainly specialize if you want to.

So if I want to do a dermo residency for example. So I probably have to go out of state to do it which means it has to be done during 4th year. Isn't it, it is kind of late for residency applications?

After deciphering what you where trying to say in your post.....you have electives in 3rd year which will allow to get exposure to derm. Now early 4th year as in the summer and fall you go out of state to do audition rotations at hospital that have a derm residencies, so you can build your application that needs to be in by decemberish (sometime after fall)?. Every school works this way, the DMU advantage is that 4th year is 90% elective time so you can do more rotations in in what you want to do. The only way you dont go out of state is if you are in a big city like New York which has many derm residencies in the city.

Thanks for bringing that up, Toohot. So, how many elective rotations does a student normally get to go through before he/she sends in the app in December?

Should we have our minds pretty set at that point what residency field we want to enter? Or, do we still have somewhat of an opportunity to test out specialties that we didn't rotate in our 3rd year? I always wondered how that worked. For example, if I know I want to do peds, do I do a few different peds rotations my fall 4th year to get my "foot in the door" at several hospitals where I want to apply?

I hope that makes sense...

After third year clerkshps you should have a good idea of what you want to go into. Again the exact timeline for applying I'm not sure of, but if you have a dmu catalogue from your tours there is a timeline somewhere in there I think. However, our 4th year only has 2 required rotations which you should do after you you have applied. You are going to want to do more elective audition rotations then you have time for so you just apply for them and pick the places you want most. Also worried about years 1-2 and step one before that stuff.

I just received the acceptance today (interviewed on Oct. 12). Feels great to join the class of 2012!
My question is how is NSU compared to DMU in terms of COMLEX pass rate and match rate? and the area as well.
I know the facilities and equipments that DMU has are far better.

I just interviewed at nova yday and they actually start the 2nd year early adn end by the first week of may or late april so their students have approx 2 months to study for boards...but yea i dunno how des moines works

I think both schools will educate you well enough to pass. Although I think NSU has a tough attendence policy. So if you get more done by skipping class then DMU would be a better option. Its really up to you to pass the Comlex.
