Is attendance optional at DMU?

Since i'm procrastinating w/ anatomy, i'll answer this for you. Most classes are optional and a lot of people skip class b/c most are recorded on mp3 and the material is handed out ahead of time as well as the lecture slides (ppt/word doc). There are a few classes here and there that will be mandatory such as intro to medical ethics and a few behavioral medicine classes. The only classes as of now that is always mandatory is OMM and anatomy lab. I think this covers it. Hopefully this helps you out. Feel free to PM w/ other questions

Year 3 for our class will be mainly in Iowa except like 40-60 of us, so 2012 maybe, less who knows. 4th year is 90% elective time, so you choose were you want them at (this is same for all schools md/do)

Is it true that since most MD schools have teaching hospitals, if one chooses to do all the electives at the school's teaching hospital, there is no need to move at all even during the 4th yr electives? On the other hand, most DO schools do not have teaching hospitals, the 4th yr electives need to be taken at various places...meaning moving around a lot.

So do you guys have small group sessions besides 1st year lectures? Do you have quizes in addition to exams?

We don't have small group discussions for any of our classes, YET. I hear we will for intro to medical ethics but we haven't had one. We don't have quizzes for most classes except for OMM. So far they have announced them a week in advance but I've been told that they have been known to give a pop quiz here and there. But these quizzes are worth 5 pts and they give about 10 for the entire year. Exams though, are very frequent w/ one every week and the occasional deucer. Next semester will be good times since we'll have 2 exams/week each week during Feb and May. Let the good times begin!!!

You can sign up for various small group electives. First semester, you can do PBL biochem, which meets once a week. You do case studies related to biochem material you're covering in groups of six students with one faculty facilitator. Generally speaking, the smaller group stuff is elective.

Hey Guys, I'm seriously considering applying to DMU and was wondering what there is to do in that area. Kinda silly since we wont have much free time in school...why did you guys apply there?

Hey guys,

Anyone here interviewing on the 15th of November?

Hey guys,

Anyone here interviewing on the 15th of November?

I'm interviewing the day after, on the 16th. I think I'm the only one from SDN interviewing on that day. Do you know how many people interview on a given day?

Good luck :luck:

I'd say about 15 people were there the day I interviewed.

Good luck to you both! 🙂

Hi,
Does anyone know whether DMU grants interviews based on LORs as one of the things it considers?

I am interviewing at DMU on the 16th. I was able to reschedule this from their first offer of Jan 10th as my son is going to be interviewing at Grinnell College on that day.
I decided to push the envelope and email KCOM to see if it was possible to schedule an interview the day before so that I could travel just once to this area. They just emailed me back and offered an interview for the 15th!! What a day!!

Congrats! You sure have a busy weekend planned! I'll be at DMU on 11/16 as well. 😀

Good Luck :luck:

Wow! They're earliest available interviews aren't until January? 😱

Hey guys,

I didn't want to stay an extra night (cause of costs). So I was wondering, is 330pm to early of a departure time from Des Moines for a domestic flight. I don't go on many domestic flights so I was wondering, would leaving DMU and being at the airport at 230pm be enough time? Also would they even let me out that early?

You definitely need to call them and see if they can schedule your interview right after lunch. It's possible that you could start the interview right at 1:00pm and be done by 2:00pm.

My flight leaves at 5:00pm, so I requested an early afternoon interview and the ladies in admissions (Danessa, Jean and Gina) were super nice and accommodating.

Call them now! 😀

I'm sure you guys are aware of this but I wanted to remind you and your fellow interviewees that DMU does have a student host program. if you are worried about financing your stay, you can definitely stay w/ one of the student host available thru DMU. This opportunity definitely worth it since you can get a first hand account of how life would be like at DMU and DSM. You guys should definitely check it out.👍

That's a good day to interview...my interview was 11/16 last year too. And I know a bunch of us who interviewed on that day are now OMS-I's here at DMU. 😀

Good luck to all of you!

I don't have an interview, but I am on hold right now with them, and I will be there to check the place out and meet with someone from admissions on 11/16.

So, when it's all said and done (day 1 first year till last day fourth) what amount of $$ in student loans does an average DMU graduate have? Including living, eating, going out with friends, outdoor activities and well, basically life for 4 years?

Errrr....if you really must know...the cost of attendence, including tuition, housing, books, equipment, boards, personal expenses and other things relevant to school, is about 54, 54, 58, 56k for years 1-4. Now, depending on how much you need to begin w/ depends on how much you have to borrow through a loan company, assuming you need to. So you, most folks will be in HUGE debt when they get out. But as long you you're smart about your finances during and after med school, then you can definitely pay it off in 10-15 years at the same time living a reasonably comfortable lifestyle. Hope that helps. You can also find this info at http://www.dmu.edu/FA/Budgets/COMbudget0708.cfm

yippie.............i got accepted to dmu! i cant believe it! i'm sooooooooooo happy!!!!!

hey guys
i got an email today
interview on jan 24th

im flying from ny
how far is the airport from the school

any tips/advice for the interview ( i know its too early to ask, but i am just excited)

thanks

The airport is not far at all from the school. I drove, but I stayed at the Heartland Inn near the airport, and it took about 5 min to get to the school from the hotel.

As for the interview, you might check the interview feedback section of SDN. It is really helpful!

Good luck!

School is only a few miles from the airport. As far as the interview, this is probably going to be the most chill one you have. DMU puts on a great day. Plus, if you interview on a Friday it's taco salad day in the cafeteria. Seriously, if you feel a little uneasy about the interview, check out the interview feedback to see what people are asking this season. Feel free to PM about specific questions about DMU.

No it's not too late. I'm just being neurotic because I've only been complete there for just over a week now. Good luck at your interview! 😀

I'm renting a car from Budget for $15 a day. That might even be cheaper than a cab, no?

ya, if ur renting the car from the hotel, it sounds cheaper, but then u would have to worry about directions and stuff, unless the car has gps
15 dollars
wow, iowa is cheap

If you happen to be staying at the Heartland Inn, which I recommend, they'll shuttle you to/from the airport and to/from DMU! It's also the cheapest lodging, aside from Motel 6 (they don't have a shuttle and breakfast). Just don't forget to mention you'll be staying for a DMU interview to get the discount.

I booked my hotel a while ago, but I had a hell of a time getting a room! All the hotels sugguested by DMU (the ones with the discounts) we all booked at the time. So, I'm staying at the Holiday Inn on 6th Ave. I mapquested it and DMU is 3 miles away.

I'm getting really excited for my interview! I would love, love, love to go to DMU! It's my #1 choice. 😍

Thanks for all your help/tips, boner. I might PM you later with some questions about the school, if that's ok?

Hey all,

As one of the representatives of the DMU – UAAO (Undergrad American Academy of Osteopathy), I thought I would give the future DMU'ers a heads-up on some the things that we have been up to over the last few months.

- Over 40 students and faculty attend the AAO Convocation at The Broadmoore in Colorado Springs over spring break.
- Guest Speaker's Name: Philip Greenman DO, Bruce Cunningham DO, William Anderson DO, Patient Panel.
- Noon Review Session = UAAO Officers provide time for 1st year students to review and practice OMM techniques.
- Osteopathic Finish Line = Students provide OMM treatments to race participants under the supervision of an attending physician and clinical fellows. Over 1500 treatments at >10 events since last spring.
- Community OMM Night, DMU Senior Health Fair, DMU Open House & Discover DMU = Student provide OMM treatments to community members visiting. OMM Faculty supervise and provide information on the benefits of OMM.
- 1st Annual DMU Back yard Olympics = Teams of 6 participate in fun backyard games on campus. A portion of the proceeds donated to the DMU Team at the Stepping Out for Diabetes Walk.
- Fund Raisers = Discount Cards, 1st year OMM Review Packet Sales, OMM Table Sales, Silent Auction
- OMM Journal Club = OMM Fellow provide topics on OMM related research
- DMU Club Day: 101 new members
I am probably missing a few events

Note: This post is not intended to spark a comparison of DMU OMM vs others, but rather just to give you a glimpse of some of the great events you can look forward to next year. Best of luck.

BTW…The DMU Men's & Women's Flag Football Teams defeated the Drake Law School Teams in the 2007 Malpractice Bowl today.

Hey all,

BTW…The DMU Men’s & Women’s Flag Football Teams defeated the Drake Law School Teams in the 2007 Malpractice Bowl today.

Hells ya we did! It was a close game though, Drake supplied the refs which started calling bogus fouls near the end of the game, but what do you expect from a bunch of lawyers, I'm just glad I was able to bruise a couple of them :meanie:.

well...at least for now in my very early medical career its Doctors 1- Lawyers 0....lets hope this score holds up for next 30 or so years...

For those of you who interviewed at DMUCOM on Nov. 8 or 9th, have you heard back from them yet? I know they said that it would take from a week to two weeks to come up with decisions, but still. Anyone?
