Ediburgh Applicants, c/o 2017

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm in the exact same position. I'm freaking out but my parents keep reassuring me that it's going to be expensive and scary no matter where I end up (my IS rejected me, lolz) and that I need to wait until I even have choices to make between schools before I worry about whether a difference in price is worth the difference in quality. Does that make sense? I have a proclivity for run-ons...

Edinburgh is my top choice, but I'm not taking the $220,000+ it will set me back lightly. All of my loans will be through FAFSA, so they will be unsubsidized and even more terrifying. I'm trying to rationalize the expenditure with all the opportunities Edinburgh will give me and with all of the once-in-a-lifetime opportunities I will have over there such as travel and just new experiences and world views. I might even end up staying in the UK after I graduate, who knows!

Anyway, I've been talking to my dad a lot who just recently graduated from a private law school and is now a practicing attorney about taking out loans, and how he financed and is now paying back the cost of his education. My dad's a very practical guy, and very financially savvy, so I was surprised when he told me I just needed to suck it up, take out whatever loans I needed to take out, and not worry about them until I was able to do something about it. Sure, the first few years I'm out of school I'm going to be living in a cheap-@$$ flat and eating spaghetti 6 out of 7 nights a week, but I know it will be worth it if that's the route I have to or want to take.

I'm still waiting on 4 schools though, not that any of them are much less expensive (Oregon is the cheapest at $180,000), but if any of them take me, I'll start considering differences in money and whether the more expensive schools really have that much more to offer.

Sorry for the rant! Hopefully just knowing you're not alone helps a little though! I can't tell you how many COA spreadsheets I've made...

This is a bit reassuring for me to read, I am worrying about the cost too - especially being accepted into the 5 year over the 4 year. I love that it would be a bit of a slower pace and feel I will ultimately do better, but that means another year of debt. If you have a realistic COA for Edinburgh - send it my way!

I am sorry if my posts make others feel bad though, I can definitely understand the worry and pressure but there is still lots of time left in the cycle!!! :luck:

Dear Edinburgh, please email me so I can have peace of mind! Thanks, Irrelephant.

Soooo this is my calculated COA for the 5-year program. I did it in USD because that's what I'm used to but obviously this has all been converted from GBP. I calculated living assuming a flat cost £400/month, £200/month for groceries and utilities, and £800/year for travel, books, and other expenses. I based these calculations on other threads such as last year's Edinburgh thread and other UK threads, so I might be a little off, but I think this is roughly correct. The total cost of living seems a little high- is that just me or am I underestimating how expensive living in Scotland is? Any input from current Dick vets would be appreciated as always! 🙂

Tuition/year
£27900=$45065
Total Tuition
£139500=$225321
Living/year
£8000=$12922
Total Living
£40000=$64610
Deposit
£1500=$2423

Total COA for Dick Vet:
=$225321+$64610+$2423
=$292354

...might as well go ahead and round that up to $300,000... :barf:

Just for curiosity's sake, shortnsweet, how much is Glasgow per year?

I'm a 2nd year at Glasgow, paying 21K GBP for each of the 5 years. It looks like tuition has been increasing every year, but at least it's fixed for the whole 5 years.

Ok, so now I'm having a minor freak-out. I was being a loser on New Year's Eve and stalking some old SDN forums on Edinburgh. Apparently some of the old offers of admission held a condition that you have to get B's in all of your classes.

Does this include the fall semester in which you applied? Do you think they'd do this for 5yr students? I literally have four A's, a B+, and a C+ (18 credits- I've never taken less than 17, so this isn't abnormal for me, lolz). I got a C+ in a non-prerequisite class that had a class average of literally like, a D. It was awful. Only 5 people got A's or B's so I tried so hard in that class and talked to the prof a lot, but he said it would be unfair to curve the class. :wtf: I'm terrified that now my offers going to be revoked.

I'm a pretty good student for being an undergraduate research assistant, working part-time at a SA clinic, and volunteering at an equine therapy program weekly. The only other C+ I've ever gotten was in Organic Chem Lecture II...so maybe if that happens I can explain the situation to them and they might understand?

I guess there's nothing I can do until I receive my admissions packet, but I'm still freaking out. I will not being able to sleep tonight agghghghghghg.

:bang: :diebanana: :boom:

I received my admission packet yesterday, and my only condition listed was to pay the deposit.

I took 2 classes in the fall, and I am scheduled to take 2 more in the spring. They didn't mention anything about my grades in those classes. I believe they will only make the class grade a condition if it is a prerequisite course?

Yay!! 👍

I got my packet today (WOOT) and for grad entry my conditions were to successfully graduate and get a B in 3 specific classes (two of which I took this semester and the other than I'm taking next semester).

My guess is that they only have conditions like this for the 4 year grad entry program, but thats just what I think..!

Good luck to all!

I am so thankful for all these amazing SDNers and their wonderful reassurance!

Just had the office email me my letter because they sent it to the wrong state. Mine has conditions that I get B's in three classes, which isn't an issue, but then goes on to state that I have to raise my GPA to a level that would require me getting straight A's this semester. Considering that I work part time and am taking 17 credit hours including the hardest chemistry class I'll ever take, it's not looking up.

I feel your pain/ worry. Mine had conditions that I get a B or better in 4 courses which doesn't sound hard at all. I took two of these already and should have had a B or better, but apparently bombed my final for genetics so I dropped down from a B+ to a C+ (no minus grades are given). I worry what this means for my offer and how I might fix it...otherwise.... :scared:

Both of you should contact them and discuss it with admissions. Over the phone using skype would be best, then follow up confirmations via email (that is what I always did).
Christiansenle, I would explain your circumstances and ask about the GPA requirement. Maybe it can be fiddled with. Edinburgh does make exceptions at times.
MonkeyResearcher, try to contact them early to discuss whether they can be flexible with that one class. It may help if you can demonstrate that you have gained the knowledge elsewhere already, or if you can explain the circumstances of why you might get a poor grade.
I hope it all shakes out for you two!

Hi, I'm new here. Applied to vet schools this past fall and have interview with Glasgow, SGU, and my IS, and then I got the conditional offer from Edinburgh. Glasgow and Edinburgh are my top choices (my IS school is in a city that I really dislike and that I know I would be miserable in, and I honestly prefer Scotland-type weather to Caribbean-type weather). That being said, my conditions for Edinburgh were to get Bs in Microbiology (which I took last semester and earned an A), Zoology, and Animal Physiology (both of which I had planned on taking this semester). Unfortunately, it is nearly impossible to find a zoo or animal phys class anywhere near me. I expressed my concerns to Minnesota (the school that required zoology) back in November and they said that I could take a second semester of general biology instead. Also, every school that I applied to accepts human OR animal phys, so I just found a human anatomy and phys class to take the place of animal physiology. I am pretty sure that Edinburgh just required Bs in animal phys and zoo specifically because I listed them under "future courses" on my VMCAS application and I don't know if they will accept Bs in my bio class and human phys class instead. I emailed their office about it and Laura in the admissions office said she would forward my inquiry on to the selection committee.

Anyway, my question for anyone here is if you have any experience with or know of anybody who has had experience with a similar problem. Do you think they want me to have taken those classes specifically, or do you think they will accept Bs in the courses that I am taking in their place (that were accepted by US schools as proper substitutes)?

I am mostly wondering, because I *could* move back to where I completed my undergrad and take animal phys and zoo there, if necessary. They offer both courses and still have seats open in both courses. However, their semester starts in 2 weeks, and if I do have to take animal phys and zoo specifically, I am going to have to quit my full-time job, pack up, and move 6 hours away in the next 13 days, which could be a *little* stressful for me haha. I am perfectly willing to do so if it comes to that because I really want to go to Edinburgh, but I would prefer not to (for obvious reasons).

So basically, I guess I was just wondering if any of you have a take on the situation either way. I just kind of want to get an idea either way so that I can give my employer my 2 weeks and start looking for places to live if need be. Any insight that anybody has would be great.

Thanks!

I haven't heard any news from Edinburgh, so I sent my Fall '12 transcript late last week. Does anyone know if they are finished with the process and just have rejections to send out, or they are still considering international (i.e. US) applicants?

I spoke with them last week. It appears that they are still reviewing applicants and will be until late this week.

I would think that they'd be flexible since my classmate have such different academic backgrounds. I thought I was going to have to take a class different from what I listed on my app. I asked if I could do a similar online one instead and they were totally fine with it. Still, I recommend calling admissions personally on an issue like this. That way you can get your answers quicker and make subsequent decisions sooner. If they insist on you taking that class, I would look for an online alternative rather than move if possible. Hopefully it doesn't come to that. I'm sorry I can't offer more on this. 🙁

The human physiology class I am currently enrolled in is actually online. The only online animal physiology class I can find is only offered in the fall. And there aren't any online zoology courses, which makes sense since they almost always have a lab associated with them. I am more concerned about them not accepting bio II in place of zoology since human and animal physiology courses do not vary too greatly.

But thank you for your quick response! I know it is late over there right now, so I think that I will wait until tomorrow morning. If I don't have any sort of response in my email I will definitely take your advice and make a call!

Wow that took a long time, finally! Got accepted 5 year program!

Ah, congrats Mainer!!! We're you notified via email or snail mail???

I hope it all shakes out for you two!

I e-mailed Ms. Henderson at admissions about the circumstance. I received a reply this afternoon:
"The advice that the committee have given is that the C+ you received in
genetics is acceptable but advise you do some self study in genetics to
prepare yourself for the course work."

Sooo... I have two classes I still need to take and get B or better, and I am in! It is a relief off my chest! :soexcited:

Is anyone else still waiting to hear about being rejected or accepted? I'm figuring at this point it's a rejection but just want a 100% answer.

yep...emailed them last week asking what the status of my application was, but no response. I'm figuring its a rejection too.

I'm still waiting too. Another sdn'er said that dick vet was going to be looking at applications through this week as well. Don't give up hope just yet!! I, however, am predicting a rejection but I suppose we'll see!

I emailed Laura hoping for an update at this is the email I got. Thought I would share it with everyone who is still waiting..."Thank you for your email. Due to the large number of applications this year the selection committee are at present still looking through applications. I hope to get back to people very soon to let them know the outcome of their application."

When I emailed them about taking different courses than those listed in my conditional offer, it took them a week to approve them for this very reason (selection committee still busy reviewing applications), so I wouldn't lose hope! They are just taking time to thoroughly review each application, which is a good thing!

Got an email reply from Laura! Apparently all I have to do is get B's in Intermediate Inorganic and Genetic and I'm good to go! I guess the GPA thing is something that automatically shows up or something but she completely took it out of my offer altogether for me!!!!!!!

SO RELIEVED!😍

Haha yay! That's exactly how I felt when Laura emailed me back telling me that the committee approved the classes I'm taking in place of those listed on my VMCAS app (and ,subsequently, as part of my conditional offer). Afterward I felt a little silly for how much I stressed out about it for a week (could barely eat or sleep waiting for a reply). But it's good to want something that badly, right? 😀

Has anyone heard from Edinburgh about more acceptances/rejections?

If anyone has questions about Edinburgh, please feel free to leave a message, I have not regularly kept up with the forum, but I will certainly try my best to help, annoy, or scare you all the best my abilities can offer. Oh, to ShortnSweet, where the heck have I been....to the fartherst reaches of the underworld back in NJ dealing with my shiba inus and then actually trying to focus on farm animal last fall semester. Reasonble answer?

Haha I was just teasing. It's been forevs. Hope you are well. 🙂

Moi, same old same old, just a new semester with different material following the same habits, lol. Shocking this will be the last semester I have lectures and then final year, quite shocked how fast this course has gone. Made a complete ass of myself for my class's college ball video, luckily staff do the same thing as well!! All in good fun, because its just how I roll! How have u been, anything special out in Glasgow or more of the same? What else could I put, ahh, join the Royal Dick Bowling Society!! Shameless promotion for the win!

Right? Didn't we just move over here? I have finals in 8 weeks--death. Who thought exams worth 100% were a good idea? Last day of lectures ever Feb 26th. What the what? Think i'm gonna dress as a penguin...haven't decided yet. Excited to finally start rotations and um...knock on wood...graduate next year 😀

Our revue/skits is in 3 weeks, so we're scrambling around trying to make videos for that. Sure i'll make a complete fool of myself as well...maybe do some Gangam style in the equine hospital...? We shall see!

See pre-vets...UK schools are awesome 😉

First Hi!!!!! (it's been a while). Secondly, when do you guys start rotations? I just heard today from an RVC student that they are starting final year rotations in FEB!! They think it is due to the larger class sizes, around 200 is what this student said.

Went to AVS congress (for US students, it's the equivalent to an SAVMA conference) this weekend. You should have come to it SnS. We could have ultrasounded little sheepies and cows together!!

I know! Miss you!! We start in June...resits for 4th yr are the first week, and then rotations start the second week. I have 5 weeks of EMS back at home booked for April/May.

I thought about it...but next weekend is shot with my birthday and a friend visiting and the Superbowl, so I couldn't let two weekends go without studying (these exams are beasts)! Hope some Wegies were there to represent!

Hey guys, I'm new here although I've been lurking on this site for a few months. Sorry if this has already been brought up but I didn't see it anywhere. I got into the 4 year program at Edinburgh (only school I got into this time around) and I was planning on accepting the offer but with financial troubles and family stuff going on at home I think it would benefit me to take a year to work and save some money before moving over to the UK. Does anyone know if there is a way to defer the offer for a year? Or if I have to reapply next year, will the fact that I already got accepted help me? I really don't want to risk not getting in next year and feeling like I threw away a great opportunity.

Edinburgh is usually really good when it comes to deferring.. just call them or email them and explain the situation. Best of luck to you! 🙂

I contacted them at the beginning of the month and Laura replied telling me they were still looking at applications. When I asked again later (after having sent in my transcript mid-Jan), I heard nothing.

Yes, well, that would be nice indeed.

Hey all!

Congratulations to all who got accepted .Hang in there if you're still waiting!

Anyone going to the reception in SF?

Anyone going to the reception in SF?

I'm going to the reception in NYC next week even although I am questioning the financial feasibility of going to vet school ...

ahh... people in UK schools - how will you be able to balance debt and having a life? I fear my debt will stop me from having a family, spending time with family, buying a house, etc.

How many SDNers are going to be in NYC on Thursday for the reception?!

Really enjoyed the NYC reception and sent in my deposit today.

Cant wait until August!
