Edward Via - Carolinas (VCOM-CC) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I thought they said that the committee was meeting today, Thursday the 20th and would be going through everything. And does anyone know if it is going to be snail mail that we get the news from? My friend who ate lunch with us said she got a phone call first, then a letter in the mail? I am so nervous right now, feel like I might vomit. The interview has my head all screwy since they asked me very tough questions about my MCAT and about my secondary application (Sorry I chose internal medicine when Infectious Disease was not on there as my first choice). What do you all think about it?

I thought they said it was next week, but I could be mistaken. I think they were really looking for how you were going to defend your application, so as long as you had answers I wouldn't sweat too bad. I feel a little off too- the first interviewer brought up my MCAT, but the second one didn't even have my file. Nothing in my application was really brought up at all. I wonder if they even took the time to read mine... 😕

See, they knew a lot about me, the issue was that I couldn't read the clinician. This is what confused me. She read about the stuff I have been doing (write for a website, bartend parttime, volunteer at a hospital, etc) but she never brought up my full time job which is in radiology. I have learned a ton about it and feel great that I have this on my resume, but I had to tell her about it. I dont know if she was testing me or what. She also tested me about my secondary. The faculty member was so nice, we talked about PIttsburgh and everything. He brought up my MCAT, but explained that Physics is not a strong area of mine, but that I did bring my score up. Also made it known why I wanted to be a DO and why VCOM. I think I handled the questions well, but ya, just don't know. I went in prepared and ready, but they threw some curves at me. The student interview, I felt great at. She even said "good answer, good answer" on a bunch of my stuff. I hope they take into account, my essays which rock, all my extra curriculars, my great GPA, and the fact that I did early acceptance showing that I want to be there. I knew a lot about VCOM due to my tour in May. They told me a ton of great stories! I am just so nervous right now because of the interview. Still feel "unsure" about it. 🙁

all this being grilled at gpa/mcat is freaking me out and I don't even have an interview yet! I dint have awesome numbers . I have a good MAsters gpa however. 🙁

Don't worry so much about that if they interview you, those aren't going to be the major factors of rejection/acceptance. The reason they even bring it up in an interview is not to make you feel like crap before they reject you. They actually want to see how you respond to the situation as it is. Be level-headed and honest (though maybe not TOO honest) and I don't think you can really mess that topic up. Getting overly flustered is what they want to make sure you don't do.

See, I just don't know. I know my chances are ok right now, but the fact that I just felt unsure about the interview gets to me. I am trying to remain positive, but I just dont know. I was confident in my answers and the interview, it was when I got out that I felt my confidence shake a little bit. The faculty member told me that he could tell I did my homework on VCOM so that is good. I will just keep praying. If I get in, drinks on me!

If it helps, I don't have awesome undergrad numbers either but my grad school gpa was better and I got an interview.

They (from what I've heard) like non-trads and people that have been out in the world.

Hopefully that works to our advantage!!

I have a feeling that after Wednesday, I'm going to need that drink .

Oh and if u are watching the news and see that guy in Pittsburgh with the gun in that building, ya I work 4 floors above that. Crazy freaking week!

ey guys I would really appreciate your input on my situation...i have multiple mcats with 26 10,9,7 being my highest but I retook it and got a 24 888. Im a former Divisoin one footbalI player have a 4.0 with an extremely stong service background including 2 years as a service missionary in Africa. I also lived in Alexandria Va for 2 years and this is probably my top schools I'm applying to. Just wondering do they take the latest or highest mcat, and does having ties to VA or do u have to be a resident? Finaly AACOMAS just released my app to them on 9/20...how long did it take for everyone else to get thier secondary and II on average?

THanks again I would apprecaite any input that anyone has for me!!

apparently they take your highest individual section scores, so your 26 would stand. they might ask you why your score dropped, so just have a reasoning for that.

MAN! Dude your application sounds very strong. My application is no where close to that but your score seems very good! I have no doubts you would hear back from them for a secondary. I did early acceptance but have heard it takes 2 weeks or so. My MCAT came up in my interview and I basically described it as I didn't like the environment with cameras in your face and having to finger printed in and out of the room. I am also not as strong when it comes to physics and that is why my score was low. I did say that if they wanted me to take it again, I would. It is one of those things that I hate talking about, but it came up and I feel I handled it well. Everyone is different in test taking areas.

Remember, this forum is for the SC campus, not the VA campus.

HI Pitt Thanks for the commen, yeah I actually felt the same way and also my grandfather was admitted into the hopspital that week and actually passed away the next day. I think I defintely wasn't in the best state of mind but I dont know if I should bring that up in the interview. While it is the truth I feel like using my grandfathers death as a reason for not doing as good might rub some interviewers the wrong way...any thoughts? This is probably my number one schools im applying to but im a little nervious about the late app...my applicaion was released 09/20 so i hope things work out but well see...btw u said u were a early decesion...do u mind me asking how did things work out for u?

Just as a head's up to the people who have already interviewed:

I interviewed yesterday and Gail told us that they were meeting to decide on all the interviewees up to this point today. She didn't know if the decision would come in an email or phone call but she said that we would all know within a week.

Ugh, my glass is already half-empty and it's only eight in the morning...

It's amazing how a single phone call can make or break your whole day/week/month!

Hey guys, quick question. From the boards I thought VCOM sent their secondary out right away without screening. I just received an email that VCOM received my aacomas and the app is under further review. Is that normal for VCOM?

Well, I got....interesting news.

I was told that the whole committee could not meet today and that my application was deferred until the Oct 18th committee meeting 🙁.

I have no idea what to make of that....

That's a pretty large quantity of time... hopefully nothing dramatic is happening

Gail said that there were a few "yes" and some "no" and the rest were deferred until the whole committee could meet and vote.

I'm guessing that not all the interviewers could make it to discuss their experience with us (we were not all interviewed by the same three people)?

Who knows, right?!

I interviewed yesterday and just got the acceptance phone call today!! It's amazing how quick this school is. Good luck to everyone who interviewed!

I got the acceptance call around noon today. First acceptance!

I had a missed call and I thought it was the school but it was my mom ugh*

Hey everyone! I got an interview invite for this school on Friday the 28th. I was complete on the 26th and my interview is for Oct. 17.

I live in Asheville (an hour away from Spartanburg) and got a chance to see the school on Friday. It's kind of in a run-down part of town, but the campus is fenced in and looks gorgeous. The building is so new looking. Anyway, I really appreciate how organized this school seems to be and this school is climbing high up my list. I'd love to hear people's opinions if they've interviewed already or just have some info/stats on the school. Good or bad, I don't care. I want to make an informed decision when I pick a medical school!

Thanks again for the help.

Anyone interviewing on 10/9 want to split the cost of a rental car and/or hotel room? I'll be flying into Atlanta on the 8th and out on the morning of the 10th. PM me if you're interested.

I don't think so. I have a friend who didn't interview here until February this year and go in last cycle. I just submitted my secondary too.

Interview Review

I interviewed here on 10/8. Overall I was impressed by VCOM, especially by their dedication to rural/underserved areas and to international work. They love international work! This was apparent not only in their mission statement, but in the class schedule, the pictures on the walls, even on the break room tables. If you know you want to be a primary care doctor and you want to work in an underserved or international field, this is definitely the school for you.

I stayed at the Sunshine Inn. It's just a few blocks from the college and really cheap, but you get what you pay for. The room was okay, but I'm 99% sure the guy staying in the next room was a drug dealer conducting business in the parking lot. If you're like me and not overly concerned about safety, it was a pretty good place to stay. Kind of run down, but as long as there's a bed and an ironing board, I'm happy enough.

There were eight of us interviewing, broken into two groups. My group got the standard introduction to the school and introduction to osteopathic medicine first, followed by interviews. There were two one-on-one interviews. My first was with a professor, the second with an emergency physician. Mostly they wanted to discuss my EC's, since I've got a long history of overseas volunteer work. It was obvious that that was exactly the kind of thing they were looking for in candidates. Interviews were open file, and both the interviewers had already done a thorough review of my file. They didn't care at all about my low cGPA, probably because my MCAT and postbac GPA were both good.

I forget where the tour of the building fit in the schedule, so I'll put it here. Of course everything is new, and they really pride themselves on the level of technology. There's cameras and screens everywhere and I think four patient simulators, including a pregnant patient. One of the simulators was supposed to be the best model available anywhere. It could even vomit on you, so I guess it's pretty realistic.

Lunch was boxes from a local deli. Oddly enough, seven out of the eight of us ordered the same turkey sandwich. During lunch we talked with two MS1s and asked them a few questions. They said the atmosphere was noncompetitive and friendly, and there were lots of clubs and activities.

After lunch we had one-on-one interviews with MS2 students. These were closed file, and I think the main purpose of them was to make sure that candidates were sufficiently friendly and possessed actual personalities. My interviewer had a list of prepared standard questions, but again she mostly wanted to talk about my volunteer experience.

After that we went on a bus tour of Wofford college and Spartanburg. VCOM students can use Wofford's gym, library, and attend sporting events for free. The town is nice, at about 60,000 people it's bigger than I'd like but small for city slickers.

The final event was a presentation by the financial aid director. Nothing new here, take out federal loans or join the army. The good news is that there's plenty of affordable housing options. Most of the apartments are 10-15 minutes away though. From what I saw, there's a huge discrepancy between rent and buying. If you've got the cash or can get your parents to cosign a loan, you can buy a cheap house that needs a little work for 20,000 and rent it out for 500 a month. At that price I can get two houses with what I'll make selling my current house and still have money left over for some of the tuition.

One thing I noticed was that VCOM didn't seem to have the same emphasis on producing excellent quality doctors that was apparent at my last two DO interviews. That's just the impression I got from interview day, so it might not at all be true, but it felt like their mission was to produce doctors who would go to underserved areas, and not necessarily to produce the best possible doctors. That was about the only negative impression I got, though.

Overall I'd say VCOM-CC is a good school. I'd certainly fit in well there, and I'd be happy to attend. I'm on my way to an interview at Tulane now, and I'll let you know how that one goes too.

I'm glad you enjoyed the interview! The cost of living in SC is ridiculously cheap and it does shock a lot of people.

Did they say when they would be making decisions?

my file was placed on hold ...not sure what I could now sigh

They said when they would be making decisions, but I can't find where I wrote it. I think it was within about three weeks.
