Edward Via - Virginia Campus (VCOM-VC) Discussion Thread 2015 - 2016

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
That is very strange. Have you tried calling them and checking to see if you have everything required. I did not really believe that they screened in order to send secondaries but I was super excited to get a secondary so fast. Now I am waiting to actually complete it. You have to wait 48 hours to access it :-/

The initial email they sent me said that they had received my primary and that they would screen me for a secondary. It said this process can take up to 3 months. So the day after the 3 month mark I emailed them and they wrote back saying I was still being screened.

VCOM does indeed screen primary apps before sending out secondaries.

Anyone know if there has been a Facebook group made for the accepted?

I set up a FB page for people accepted to the VCOM Carolinas Campus about a month ago. If there still isn't one set up for the VCOM Virginia Campus, then any one of you can set it up and PM accepted people the link. PM me if you have any questions on how to do this 🙂

Submitted 3 mo ago. Any word on how long it takes to reach committee?

I sent mine in at the beginning of October, haven't heard back since either.
My cGPA is very low, sGPA is 3.25, but my MCAT score is 509 (equiv. to 31) so I thought I would at least have a chance, but I haven't gotten any update from them since :/ anyone else here have any advice or is having the same issue?

Does VCOM do silent rejections or is there an actual confirmation saying we are rejected (pre-interview)?

I sent my secondary months ago. When I asked a couple week ago the administration said my file is still under review...

Anyone have issues paying once submitting their secondary? I was emailed by Ms. Mitchell stating that they received my secondary but needed my LORs. I'm really confused..I emailed her back asking her what to do but still response.

How late is a "late interview" here? If I'm still under review since September should I be worried that if I'm offered an interview it will be really late? Not sure if I'm being silently rejected or put aside for later review lol

Do you have plenty of medical experience or volunteer work? I know when I went on my interview there were several medical scribes and EMTs. VCOM and DO schools in general are big on medical experience prior to matriculation. They are also looking for community service minded individuals. If you can get involved with a free health clinic somewhere that will help. Maybe you already have a lot of experience, just offering some advice that helped me. But that MCAT will definitely come in handy as well.

Does anyone know what the portal says when letters are updated?

I have been shadowing a doctor who has a children's clinic in Texas every summer for about 5 years now and have over 500 hours of shadowing, other than that I don't have any specific medical experience. We don't have scribes in Canada unfortunately so I couldn't get a job as a scribe either.

I am still confused about this... does the one portal give us notifications about all three campuses?
also do we interview three times? or is it that we get to choose which location we want?

To my understanding from what I have obtained from this thread is that you can apply to all 3 campuses and link them in order you wish to attend they will review your file and you will be selected to interview at 1 campus the one they feel best suits you.

You can choose or set priorities for which location you would want. But unless you are dead set on a particular location, I highly advise applying to all three. I just set my priorities for all three schools at the same level. I would assume that you increase your chances of getting into one of the locations if you do so.

The shadowing hours will definitely be a huge advantage. I personally think you still have a good shot at getting an interview this cycle. I would contact them though and make sure they have everything you need for your file to be reviewed. There could be something holding it up. Also, if you don't have a DO letter at this point I would work on getting one. After you are accepted I think they give you a month to get one before you are able to take the acceptance.

Thanks! I do have a DO letter actually, but I called them and they said that there is a huge load of applications at this point and they consider in-state, then OOS, then international (which is what I am). So I will likely have to wait quite a while for a response. :/

After the application is received do they send an email letting you know that the file is complete?

I have the same question. I emailed them twice and still waiting on a response. How is everybody else contacting them, are people receiving emails letting applicants know they are complete?

Yes! You will receive a "Complete" email basically notifying you that you are under review. However, I think they only send that email once they have decided to review your file. VCOM takes their time because they are very thorough so don't stress out yet!

Sent in my secondary today (had to apply late in the cycle due to funds). Science and non science gpa greater than 3.8, around a 28 mcat. Over 200 hours non-medical volunteering and over 200 hours medical. Lots of leadership and such. Do I have a decent chance this late in the game?

I'd say you're a lock for an interview, even at this stage.

I was emailed directly by someone for admissions to let me know that my LORs were not received. She emailed me back yesterday stating that my file was complete and under review. I did not however receive an official email from VCOM. Just patiently waiting to see what happens from this point on.

Hmm that's good to know. I submitted my secondary on the 6th and haven't heard anything from them yet. Getting kind of antsy, lol!

Hey guys how far is VCOM from the campus of Virginia Tech? Is it on campus? Thanks!

You can take a bus that stops right in front of VCOM to the center of VT campus. It's technically off campus in the research center, but still within walking distance if it's a nice day.

Yes! You have a decent chance. Just make sure you submit your app ASAP

Interviewing here on 12/7! Also, I never received a complete email. I ended up emailing them after 1 month just to check in, and then they replied saying I was complete. But the II was by phone. They do seem a little slow, but they're very kind if you inquire about your application!

How long after submitting your secondary did you receive your interview invitation?

I paid and submitted over a month ago, then got an email last week asking when I'd be submitting my secondary for them to review. Make sure they at least received yours!

Complete here since 10/27..and no news yet
Top school for me

Complete as in everything is submitted and accounted for.
Share some of that patience with me!

Hey, did you email them and double check that you were complete? Other than that it's just a waiting game. Best of luck though!

Accepted here on 12/10! The faculty that interviewed me were some of the kindest I've ever encountered. Good luck everyone!
