Edward Via - Virginia (VCOM-VC) Discussion Thread 2014 - 2015

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
how do you guys feel about the tests at vcom? (1-4 per week) to current students, how is this manageable? i've heard each test is on around 15 lectures. just trying to decide between here and another school that has about 60ish lectures for a test every 3 weeks.

Each test is more like 10 lectures with some being more...very manageable if the tests aren't back to back...when they are (which does happen), it obviously gets more difficult but still not impossible, just have to study ahead. I think I would prefer the more test schedule because it makes you study and almost outlines when to study for each. I'm not as independently motivated as I should be so more tests is probably better for me. I don't know about 60 lectures on one test. That's like 2400 slides (assuming 40 slide Avg per lecture). That's a different beast - not saying it's bad, might be even better but probably not for me.

As I see the trend from previous posts, what if......the adcom will call students for ii today? 😉

I'm pretty sure I got my II call on a Tuesday, but I was also interviewed on the ED day. Sooo - you could be right, but they don't always call on Fridays. Good luck! Hope you get the call.

Thank you! That means I won't get one today then. I just derived from previous posts which indicated that ii calls were usually on Tue, Thu, or Fri. But you know there is no definite answer like those acceptance calls on Fridays.

Well....I know I need to be patient, but it is so irritating to feel as if it is always in the back of my head. Haha. Thank you for your encouragement btw!

Really wish I would have listed my cell number instead of my home number... Grrrrr

Why don't you email Ms. Howell and ask her to update? She responds to emails very quickly!

Just got the call for an II a little while ago! I was offered November 10, 11, 17, and 18.

Complete on 10/20. In-state, non-trad, 3.8+ cGPA and sGPA, 26-28 MCAT.

My application was supposedly released on 10/9 (although one school sent me a secondary the day before) and I have yet to hear anything from this school; not even a courtesy e-mail. Can somebody adjust my expectations?
My stats, in case it matters:
30 MCAT (11 PS / 10VR / 9 BS)
3.73 overall GPA, 3.82 science
physiology major

my apps were released the same day and my stats less than yours. I got a courtesy email 10/10 saying they received my primary and then got the secondary on 10/27.

My first email from this school went to my spam - try checking there!

I've been regularly scanning that for precisely that occurrence. Thus far, I have not had a single school's e-mails land in my Spam folder.

Same release date and same secondary invite date. Took a little less than 3 weeks to receive the secondary.

How do you decline an acceptance? I received the acceptance letter in the mail but there is no option to decline the acceptance. I don't want to just ignore the letter but I would still like to be courteous and let them know. Should I just email the admissions office?

Ill be applying first day next year as a VA resident. What stats would you think I'd need to have a decent chance?

Just send Julie an email - she should be very nice about it and be able to take care of it. Have you decided on another school?

Yeah, there was just too much about the school I didn't agree with. It just felt too controlled for me.

Do I even have a sliver of a chance if I apply this late in the game? MCAT 28, cGPA 3.7, sGPA 3.5, decent ECs, but only a few hours shadowing a DO Physician? Strong ties to VA as well...

So I have a slight issue... I got an email on Sept.3 that they had my primary and would be reviewing it within three or four weeks... and I still have not heard anything back.... I called and no answer.... Do I enter panic mode now? Does this mean something bad??

Call again or email. They are pretty nice there and should be helpful. There's no reason to panic.

I received their email stating they had got my primary in mid October and didn't hear anything further until yesterday; however, the email they sent wasn't reassuring :

We thank you for taking the time to submit an application to the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine. Your application is scheduled to be reviewed by committee. The purpose of the committee meeting is to determine whether or not to invite you to submit a Secondary Application along with letters of recommendation.

Please be advised: considering the volume of applications we receive, the review process may take up to three months. As soon as the committee has had the opportunity to review your file, we will be certain to notify you by email.

3 months?! Surely not... riiiiight?!

It could take that long. I applied in June and received that email in July. I didn't hear anything from them until I emailed them this week. It is a possibility.

Oh my! Thanks for letting me know! Did you apply to only this campus, or did you apply to their other campuses as well?

I applied to them all. I didn't add the Auburn campus until September. Hopefully, you hear back faster than I did. Good Luck!

Has anyone been waiting for over 3 weeks for an ii since October?

I was all set to go to the open house this weekend but then got a rejection email today after due to low science GPA (3.1). I completed a secondary application in July. Should I still apply to the other VCOMs?

no - they hold the same standards for all campuses. that is what we were told during the interview

Wait.....so they still sent out secondaries even though they knew that the low GPA/MCAT wouldn't qualify anyway?

I am just curious because of my low MCAT score.

A higher GPA of >/=3.7 would set off a lower MCAT score according to their website. But their GPA is a strict cutoff I believe. After the secondary it isn't strictly a numbers game

I know but it sounds like the above member had already received the secondary....

true, its a complicated system and im sure the faculty knows what they are doing when they are selecting applicants.

Sure! Sure! Don't get me wrong! I was just expressing my troubled thought! I am no one to judge how they select applicants.

It has been almost 4 weeks for me since secondary submission.

I'm still waiting and having arrhythmia everytime my phone vibrates!

My stats are 3.5/3.1/28
I think what happened was I did meet their requirements at that point since I was so close to the 3.2 science GPA cutoff. But they are probably seeing exceptional applications so that the bar has been raised and now I am below it 🙁 . I was pretty upset because I thought I had a shot of interviewing here. Also I am a VA resident.

Any current VCOM students out there? I have a question for you

My question is about the curriculum. I know the first 2 years are broken up into blocks, I was wondering how current students prepared for the COMLEX exam. My concern is that as I progress through the blocks I will become less familiar with the content covered in the earlier blocks. Is there a connection to previously covered blocks that I am not seeing? Or is it just the responsibility of the student to review before block 8?

That sounds like a plausible reason. You shouldn't beat yourself up over it. Try and retake a class if you can or maybe you have a better shot at another school!

Also your story shows how much VCOM values a strong GPA because you have a great MCAT for most osteopathic schools and you would think that would bring attention away from the GPA.

Submitted my secondary 11/11 and received my complete email today (11/13)! I'm impressed with how fast they are 👍 kudos to them!

I want to call them today for my application status. What number should I call? What time is most appropriate?

Complete 10/20

Thank you all!

You were particularly lucky with your timing. It appears they send out the complete e-mails in bunches because I submitted on 10/31 and got my complete e-mail today as well and this time it didn't go to my spam box.. so I'm confused a bit there. Oh well, at this point it's just waiting for a call anyways so no more worries.
