I have heard rumors that Florida A&M University is opening a PharmD dept in Tampa, has anyone heard this? I wonder if it is like Nova's where it is just for Pharm BS to get their PharmD.

I'm just keep hoping for additional options to increase my slim chances. 🙄

How do you know Nova only admits Pharmacy B.S. grads for their PharmD program??

Also, I'm interested in any info anyone can give me about Nova's site in Ponce, Puerto Rico b/c Nova's website on it isn't much...

As far as Nova is concerned, they do not offer a BS degree period. They did away with that ages ago. Also, they do not have a site in Tampa. They have only 2 sites, that being West Palm Beach and Ponce PR.

As far as distance learning at @ Nova, they run live lectures from the main campus in Ft lauderdale into the WPB and Ponce campuses. It is not like Florida where you can spool the lecture and watch it whenever you want.

As far as FAMU opening a branch campus, this is a rumor and it will not happen. Currently at FAMU, they do not believe in quantity, but quality. They feel that opening distance based sites are not a very good option and will not pursue that option.

I believe she was referring to the non-traditional postbac Pharm.D. program offered at Nova, along with their traditional Pharm.D. program, and was wondering if FAMU would offer the non-traditional (post BS) or the traditional program at Tampa.

A post-BS Pharm.D. in itself isn't non-traditional. Full-time post BS Pharm.D. programs are considered traditional while part time ones are non-traditional. Most programs available to those with their BS are of the non-traditional variety.

This is what made me wonder if FAMU had a Tampa branch:

FAMU @ TAMPA

This is what made me know it was not what I needed:

TAMPA FAMU

This is what had me checking into Nova more closely, as yes, they do have a Tampa campus:

NOVA @ TAMPA

FAMU has a Tampa campus, but it is for rotations. When I looked into FAMU, they told me that I could do my last year in Tampa, but the other years had to be in Tallahassee.

I believe Nova's Tampa campus is for BS pharmacists looking to get their pharmD.

So can one with a BS in Biochemistry still apply to Nova assuming all prerequisites were met or did they need a BS in Pharmacy?

Check out the link I gave, but to the best of my ability to decipher, Nova's Tampa campus is just so practicing pharmacists who do not have a PharmD can get their PharmD. Of course their other locations offer the complete PharmD program.

<Thanks, FutureRxGal for clarifying my statement. I had thought he was still speaking of the Tampa campus.>

Of course you can apply to Nova. You can apply to any school as long as you have or will have completed their prereqs prior to either the summer before or matriculation (depends on the school). This is for the traditional Pharm.D.

As far as the post-bac non-traditional Pharm.D at Nova or any school, you need to have a BS in Pharmacy.

Thanks FutureRXGal, I'm Puerto Rican but never been there so it would be paradise to go to pharmacy school and get my PharmD there. I know Nova is a Florida-based school, so what would it be like to get a PharmD through Nova and try to practice in California, my home state? Would I only need to take the Boards?

There's also the University of Puerto Rico, if you are looking for a pharmacy school there besides Nova. Their website is http://www.rcm.upr.edu/academics.html. They are accredited by ACPE.

I know licensure reciprocates throughout the country in all states except California and Florida. Perhaps the folks of this forum will know more about that for you. 🙂
