Future WW Games

Would you mind telling me who you were in the Rocky Horror game so I could add it to your spreadsheet @WildZoo?

Not my best game
I loved modding that game and seeing the mess of people's assumptions about who each character was. Good stuff. I roared with laughter a lot and my husband gave up on trying to get me to explain when I couldn't choke out sentences.

It is kinda tempting to do the anonymous thing again, but either way, I really would need help this time.

That sounds fun but i'm likely going to end up lynched D1 :bag::sorry:

@vetmedhead thoughts on running more juicy apple games?
I could sometime, but not today - a couple of my friends and I have decided to day drink to celebrate St. Patrick's Day a day early haha

I was deceived and thought you were in the Flume Gorge. But yes, I need the green game.
Ok. If I have one potential player, that means there are probably more.

I'll get sign ups going; ideally will start this tomorrow. Off to give myself a whirlwind refresher in Irish phrases and celtic stuff :luck:

Here is my attempt @WildZoo. It's very basic and just has played games rather than modded ones. I'm sorry there are unknown and ? slots, but some of the end results and writeups were ambiguous to me and I couldn't determine the meaning. Hopefully, you just hoard all your pms like I do so they can be corrected with accurate information. Thank you for your patience. Congrats on 80+ games though!

im curious if anyone played more games than WZ. I was thinking you, Mel and Pippy but not sure :bag::sorry:

oh and allie and MJ too

I don't know where all the players, especially new ones, got so obsessed with modding. I blame myself, for asking publicly to baby mod the noob game.

#salt

I don't want to mod a ton of games. I just have 2 or 3 game ideas that I really, really want to see which I don't think will happen otherwise. I'd rather play than mod though, and even in my minimal mod role and think modding was a lot more time-consuming than playing. I don't make spreadsheets or re-read much when playing anymore though, so that may be a factor.

Some of the older who quit relatively recently may have, like LIS. Would have to be someone who played consistently for years, which idk who that would be...

I love you. I'll look at adding more info when I'm near a computer.

MJ's number is probably close to mine. I'm sure the original generation (SOV, LIS, Dy, DVMD, etc) have played even more.

I think you and Coffee have enough experience at this point to have considered it, and don't take this wrong, I think you demonstrated how hard it is to do for players that arguably might be in a position to even consider it. Like, exactly why people with less experience than you two probably shouldn't attempt it until they get more experience. I think it's beyond anyone with less experience than you, unless they were to work extremely closely with someone else with experience, or they're just a modding prodigy wizard.

I'm not sure how much involvement you had from one of our experienced mods (didn't Kara or Kaydubs look it over?), but I think that's a big factor. Although we have seen in the past, that doesn't always avert disaster in a game.

The thing is too, that there are people who have experience that might be happy to collab with you and figure out a way to work in new exciting mechanics you've come up with, and they probably have good ideas how to balance something new with what they know. I know for a fact that @kaydubs is open to new stuff. And I can think of a few other players that I think can handle such things.

Basically, I wasn't calling out you in specific. Just, I think you're on the edge of where to be to mod, which basically in my mind puts it beyond the capabilities of almost any player newer than you or Coffee.

If I didn't feel that way about you and Coffee modding, I wouldn't have played your game (OK, I would have, but I wouldn't have stood up for the fact that I thought calling it bastard may have been a bit much, and I would have grumbled a lot more). Coffee thanked me in the other thread that I didn't think it was bastard and that it was balanced, but I don't know that it was balanced despite the fact I didn't think it was bastard. All that said, we run bastardish/unbalanced games all the time, and sometimes it's fun anyway. I don't know, in some ways I feel like I wasn't there for that one as I died earlyish and rage quit earlier than that (not related to your game design).

But it's no lie that I'm sort of elitist and outspoken about this particular point about WW, modding.

Last thing I'll say too, I don't like the idea of baby-modding in order to learn the game. I baby-modded a few times, and it was for the express purpose of trying to learn to mod (although the last few times despite being added I didn't end up having time to read), after learning most of what I know from actually playing.

I rely heavily on meta, and I like the challenge of learning to read people from the thread, I feel like it's fair and true. It sorta felt like cheating, and fast-forwarded on the development as a player that you get over time playing on thread, to be able to read everyone's PMs. Especially the noob game, where you have a lot of veterans explicitly detailing their thought processes and strategies to the noobs. It felt like an unfair advantage, and it's one reason I haven't really done it again, until I've done more homework on my own about modding and I'm getting closer to actually bringing us a game.

While it taught me a lot to be a better player, some of that wasn't just learning the game better, it was also getting a look behind the curtain at these particular players. Take pack chat for example. You only roll so many times, with so many people. You can play for years and never directly wolf with a lot of people. When you are in a pack chat with someone, you get a lot of wolf data on someone. But that's hard won and earned by years of playing and getting RNG'd. Modding shortcuts that. It's a necessary evil for the people we have who mod to bring us a game. It helps that many of those people have learned what they know about fellow players the hard way, as far as not being as unfair an advantage. Getting to know each other well makes the game easier and more of a challenge, at the same time.

I think the best, fairest way to learn is by live game playing, or maybe tot chat. Mod to mod, not to get behind-the-scenes insight on players and learn to play. It's like eavesdropping.

Play the damn game. If you don't play, just be really busy and tot. If you mod, do it because you're going to bring us a good game and lulz for all, including you. If you're not in a position to make it good because of lack of experience, then just don't do it.

I really really want to play an anonymous game
This sounds like a great idea. Of course Lawpy's statement makes me realize, like, there's probably no way that everyone doesn't immediately guess who a few of us are.

But it would be awesome otherwise for me in specific because I wouldn't be able to rely on meta.

OOOOOO if we were anonymous and hydra'd, that could help anonymize things more, maybe.

I recognize that a lot of this post was targeted at what cubs and I just posted, and I just want to say that I am truly sorry if I insulted you, or any of the veteran WW players. I was just interested in seeing what happens behind the scenes. I understand though, that I was way too eager, and I do know that I am waaayyyyyyy too new to do anything by myself. I just let curiosity get the best of me and asked. Definitely out of respect for everyone who plays here and actually knows what they are doing, I will hold off for a year or so at least. I hear what you are saying, and I do not want to cheat the process in any way by learning wolf metas the easy way or anything. My apologies everyone!

I do have an interest in seeing what happens when you can see everything, but I am more than happy to wait, because I wouldn't want to upset anyone, and I do respect the work that you all have done to get to this point.

Yeah I was in no way demanding to mod anything or cheat in any way. I just thought it would be intriguing to see all the moving parts at once. Even just a one time thing. Sorry if I was out of line with this.

Wasn't taking it the wrong way, so no worries there. I also agree that newer people shouldn't mod until they get a fair share of experience under their belts. I've played about a year now and I still feel like it was almost too early to be modding. Unless someone wants to mod/baby-mod a basics game then it should take a bit more experience to understand the mechanics and how to attempt to balance things properly.

I also agree with your point about modding to learn the game/learn about people. Imo, the best way is to watch a game or two so you know the very basics (like what is lynch, what happens at night, what's the basic terminology, etc) and then play for a while to learn the actual strategy. I also think it's crap to try and gain insight into people's play style behind the scenes. Honestly, it's part of why I change my meta a bit from game to game (especially when wolfing), because I don't like when people can decide what's "normal" for me and not.

You're fine, I'm just being salty and trying to issue a blanket pre-emptive smackdown, the issue with people modding unprepared for the gargantuan responsibility has been around for a while and not specifically you guys.

I don't speak for any of the "vets" besides myself, and I certainly don't mean to discourage you or other newer players from playing. Heck, modding isn't even for every player with a lot of experience. It's a different skill set.

I'm not particularly offended, and I doubt anyone else is. I mean, I've probably offended more people with my feelings on this, lol.

On a bigger website, if someone tries to mod and no one really recognizes their "authority", then people aren't going to sign up, or maybe just noobs who don't know any better. There's often many games going at once to choose from. It can become a real popularity contest, with mods even competing for certain/better players, and the size of the site sort of serves to select for better mods (or at least better known ones).

Here, we're all friends, and if there is a game going, we're addicts and we're going to sign up to play the game that is usually the only one running at a time, even if it's a really bad idea and will lead to salt. So the quality control I feel isn't going to come from people boycotting unqualified mods, it's going to come from players hating on less-than-well-done games (salt after the fact/damage), or better yet, from restraining ourselves from modding unless we feel confident we can steer the ship.

As far as learning the game, it's totally understandable to want to see how modding works. I'm only expressing my feels on why as a new player, it might cheat you out of some of the "boot camp" of learn-by-doing-in-the-dark. (my mind went to the gutter there....)

Yeah I was in no way demanding to mod anything or cheat in any way. I just thought it would be intriguing to see all the moving parts at once. Even just a one time thing. Sorry if I was out of line with this.
Yeah, no, you guys aren't out of line. Not trying to police in that way. Just, I honestly think EVERYONE ends up having more fun when they learn to play, and when people mod when they have a good grasp of the game. To me it's about avoiding the collective group pain that occurs when a game goes badly mostly as a result of mod inexperience.

It takes some experience with mod/player interactions to get a feel for how to write up night results, answer questions without giving away too much.... same goes for understanding balance, the effect of mod error, how to adjust for that, etc. It's just less painful for the group when you go through those growing pains as a player than when you mod. I mean, sure, player screw ups affect the game for all, but I would argue it's not quite the same as when it's mod error.

Coffee and Stagg for example, they have played enough that when I signed up, I KNEW they appreciated the magnitude of things, how much time, effort, pain players go through. Respect for the game as brought about by experience. They've paid some dues to the group by going through the pain of lynches, etc, hundreds of hours of gameplay. So it was their turn, and if it went rough, I think we can agree it's all a learning experience as a group. But they went about having done their homework as players.

I don't think anyone is trying to "cheat" and fwiw that's just my own opinion about learning the game, and the feelings I had about "peeking" behind the curtain. There's more than one way to do this, and to learn.

The other points, as far as how modding affects the game experience for all, I think stand. But the part about the curtain, that's just me.

Maybe unpopular opinion, but here it is anyways:

People can start modding whenever they want/as soon as they feel ready. No one is risking anything IRL, so there shouldn't be some kind of mandatory waiting period before someone lets you hold the scalpel.

Maybe my games suck and no one has told me yet, but here's how I see it:

These games are free to play and no one is forcing people to sign up. If you sign up, you accept that things may not be perfect.

Modding is fun, and as someone who wanted to start modding very quickly after I started playing, I understand the appeal to new players. It is also a **** ton of work and probably harder than it looks unless you have done it.

But mods -- even experienced ones -- make mistakes all the time. If people don't try out new things every once in a while, then imo we lose out on potential fun. Just be ready to own your mistakes like an adult and move on.

If something goes poorly in a game I'm running, but I can confidently defend my game design & mod decisions, then great, I can be happy with how things went. There is still probably an opportunity for a post-mortem and/or player feedback. If everything goes to hell in a hand basket, then sorry players, I promise I tried to make something fun, and maybe we can laugh about it later once you forget how one side got steamrolled into a loss in the first 48-72 hrs.

Personally, I think some important things to remember are:
- Every one of us is human and isn't hired/officially trained to do this, so mistakes are inevitable, and learning-by-doing is a valid way of learning
- We're participating because it's fun for us and on some level, we probably want others to have fun, too -- whether we are playing, modding, or spectating. Strive to be kind to one another, since we're all here to have a good time.

Basically...If you want to mod, I think you should be able to do it. It's not some perfect, magic thing that people can only comprehend after they play x # of games. On the other hand, it's also probably not the best use of YOUR time as a mod if you don't think things through enough up front (or on the flipside, expect things to go a certain way) because people will probably do things you don't expect, then whine about it later, and you'll feel guilty because it's the #healthprofessionalway to be ridden with guilt when you don't meet expectations and everyone will all be sad n' grumpy.

Just be up front with people, do your best, attempt to learn from mistakes, and regardless of how you choose participate, try not to get all worked up about whose fault something is because that's not productive for anyone.

...I'm realizing this post^ could be seen as a pre-emptive attempt by my subconscious to apologize for the game I am currently running, including the fact that I took the time to write that long-winded thing on my phone even though you don't even have your roles yet.

So be it; you're all trapped on this rollercoaster now mwuhahahahahaha
