GPA's, GRE's, XTRA's, ACCEPTANCES

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Georgia Regents does select in-state applicants with preference from what I have heard. The reason I chose to apply to GRU is rather unorthodox. My wife and I are both applying to graduate school (her to Dental School). We obviously want to be together for grad school, so we had to narrow our search to schools that have DPT and DDS programs. GRU is a great school in an awesome are that has both of our programs; that was my main reason for applying there. If you are a Georgia resident you should have a VERY high chance of acceptance since you already have an interview. The odds are stacked against me and that is why I chose to push their interview back for another school that does not have a resedence preferance.

That makes quite a bit of sense. I was looking at some of the percentages PTCAS posted for out of state percentages there, and it seemed GRU was almost as high as Emory in that department (plus from skimming the forums I've seen a lot of people post about applying there from OOS). Your reasoning makes sense though, and I also think you have a very good chance of being accepted. Your stats are much better than mine.

Stats per PTCAS, just had my GPAs verified. I'm a non-traditional student, so this will probably look a bit weird/messy, but will probably provide some context.

When did you esubmit? I've been waiting anxiously for my GPAs to get calculated... I submitted on 8/18

Interesting...I submitted a day before you and got mine calculated within like 3 days. Maybe it was because of early decision. But from my experience last year, it didn't take more than like 2 weeks

I wouldn't apply anywhere where you haven't at least met the minimum GPA requirements. I don't know about the others, but Emory is in my state and very competitive and require a GPA of 3.0 as the minimum. It would save you over 100 dollars to leave them off your list, including the PTCAS and supplemental app fee. I have a feeling they use a system to sort out applicants not meeting their minimums.

I meant to say Emory & Henry college in Virginia, sorry and if you read my post I clearly said I'm applying to schools which I think I meet their minimums, Shenandoah being my first choice. Thanks for enlightening me though.

Thanks for the kind words. You have a really solid GRE and good GPA. I like your chances. Goodluck along the process!

Do you meet the stated minimums at all of those schools? If you do not meet the minimums, do NOT apply this cycle. You must understand that generally, your application is checked when it arrives at the school to ensure all minimums are met (GPA, GRE, minimum hours, any courses that had to be done to apply). If ANY of the required minimums aren't met, your application is discarded and you will receive a "rejected" letter when the mass mailing goes out. The admissions committee will NOT read your references, personal statement or look at your extracurriculars. Essentially, they won't even get your application since you didn't meet the minimums in the first place.

I share this with you because I've been in your shoes. I would venture I had excellent and distinct personal statements, references and extracurriculars. But that doesn't matter if no one reads them. After talking to schools extensively, I learned more about the admissions process and how/why being strong in some areas won't balance out GPA/GRE. In fact, the school's accreditation is tied to their minimum admissions requirements which is also why they cannot overlook those.

Save yourself the time and money, pull up your GPA and apply next year. It will make all the difference.

Thanks for the advice though but 3-4 of the schools I'm applying at I meet their minimums requirements Shenandoah being my first choice like I mentioned, so I'll trim the number down. Was just taking chances but guess if the other schools are firm on their minimum requirements then ain't no point applying there and wasting money, something I was ignorant about.

Just thought I'd chime in seeing as I'm also applying to GRU from in-state and am literally in the same situation. Girlfriend wants to do dental and seems GRU bound so I'd like to stay close but will be ecstatic to go anywhere in Georgia. I had the opportunity to meet with Dr. Hasson over the summer to talk about the program and it seems very engaging and committed to ensuring its graduates succeed at not only practicing safely but excelling in the field. Definitely student learning based but the faculty are there to guide you along the way. I'm still waiting for PTCAS to calculate my gpas but I know they will be around 3.1 across the board. Luckily my best GRE scores are 157/157/4.0 so that helps balance my grades as well as competing as a D1 student-athlete and working multiple part time jobs throughout undergrad. Hopefully my apps can get sent in sooner than later because I definitely want to get in that first round of interviews. Like I said, I was able to get some good info about the program (as well as Mercer) so if either of you have questions feel free to DM me! Good luck and who knows, maybe we'll be classmates one day!

It is good to know there is someone out there in the same boat as me. Haha our lives are way too similar. I was also a D-1 athlete in college! Also, I will definitely be getting ahold of you to talk about GRU. I wish the best of luck to you along the interview process!

I'm interested in Mercer as well! I attended one of their open house events and learned a bit about the program, did you attend one of those or get some one on one time with the admissions committee? I'll definitely DM you.

Have you considered GW? It's probably not too far from your area. You'll just have to commute to DC. Otherwise your GPA and GREs look decent.

I did consider GW, and had planned to apply. However, their website says that "All science courses must be for science/health science majors." I took the general education version of all of my prereqs.

I"All science courses must be for science/health science majors." I took the general education version of all of my prereqs.
This kind of distinction exists? TIL. My school just had "chem", "bio", "math".

Call the school and ask directly just to absolutely make sure! It's always good to have another option in the area.

Usually this just means you can't take courses that say "NOT for health/science majors", but Gen Ed courses are fine.

Also, I'm applying to almost the same schools you are. Congrats on your GRU interview, you must have made the first 25 interviewing in September! Tell us how it went!

Congrats!! I went to GGC for my post-bac (I love that school btw!) and apparently only 3ish students from their Exercise Science program has gotten into any PT programs in school history (mind you, the school is 10 years old 😀). Correct me if I'm wrong, but you'll be their fourth! I'm a Georgia bulldog for life, but a small grizzly lives inside of me as well so I'm super happy for you!

I applied to UNG last week and hope to hear from them but from what I know, ~all but 2 seats or so are available after ED 🙁
either way, hope you enjoy the mountains!!

Thank you! I have been there since 2012 and I have grown to love GGC!!! And you are correct, (from speaking with Ex. Sci. faculty) there has only been a handful of students who made it to PT school. Hopefully, I can aid more undergraduates from GGC to also be successful in getting into PT school.

As for UNG (and their wonderful mountains), I definitely know interviews are still going-on (with both ED and regular applicants), so I do think you have a good chance! Stay positive and good luck to you! 🙂

Hi Peeps~
I'm submitting my app to PTCAS by the end of the week.

University: UC Irvine -> UC Davis
Major: Biology
Overall GPA: 3.0
Pre-Req GPA: 3.34 - 3.40 (Currently retaking Physic II and another psych course, trying to raise to 3.5+ considering that I'm looking at applying next year as well)
GRE: Q 161 (80%), V 150 (50%), AW 4.5 (80%)

Extra-Curricular: Ministry Club (for secular and religious personal pursuits), IM sports, Exercise Biology Club, and Pre-PT Club. Certified personal trainer and first-aide provider.
Volunteer: 40+ hrs for Church community service. 80 hrs in UCDMC Pediatric Emergency Room (Non PT).
PT Volunteer: 220 hrs Outpatient, 4+ hrs Inpatient (Pediatric hospital that I'm at right now), 200+ as a PT assistant in outpatient setting.

Applying to schools (12) on the west coast. Not looking at CSU, more at private institutions who accept lower GPA candidates.
I have pretty solid rec letters because of my on-going PT assistant experience. Hoping that everything else can make up for my low pGPA 🙁

Would love to hear some feedback from y'all! I don't mind answering questions either 🙂
PT Aide* or Tech* (not assistant, unless you have your associates! 😀)

No, I did a few rounds of applications. One late July and was verified mid August. And then I applied another round after my GPA was calculated and my PTCAS application was verified.

Hey BannBann, are you applying to any of your school's before the deadline for next year? We're applying to a lot of the same schools. Is it Touro Nevada or NY you're applying to? I think some of the schools are worth applying to now instead of later, especially the ones with rolling admissions. Just my .02.

I'm a little worried about this, but because I work full-time now as a Tech, I had to schedule shadowing elsewhere in my time off. I thought I had something lined up and then after giving me the run around for a few weeks during my ONLY FREE TIME TO SHADOW, I gave up and frantically called somewhere else. At that point I only had free time for about 20 hours though

I'm worried about my volunteering as I didn't expose myself to too many different settings, but I'm a second career student so I hope that shows that I'm committed to the profession... I also had a less than stellar undergrad simply because I didn't have my act together and didn't know what I wanted to do, so I didn't care too much about my GPA. I really focused on school in grad school and in community college taking my science classes, so all of my recent classes are As, but I'm not too sure about my chances because of a crappy undergrad... does anyone have any thoughts? Should I designate more schools? I was just hoping one of these would pan out, but I have no idea! I hope the GREs are ok - I took them one time without having much time to study, thinking I would just see how I did and retake them if I needed to. I wish the math were a little higher, but I know they at least meet the minimum scores so I decided not to retake them and spend all that money again.... anyone else applying to these schools?
Applying to Miami too for the same reasons! Good luck! Have you submitted yet?

Thats really cool! I hear they place a lot of emphasis on research, which I think (hope) is good for people who are also interested in research! I submitted sometime in early August, and all of my transcripts were received mid/late Aug sometime. I actually JUST heard from Miami today about interviewing in October. Actually there was an issue with my application that I just had fixed yesterday, and found out by email today about interviews so they were really helpful and also very quick to respond. Good luck to you!! Have you submitted yet, too?

Not yet!! I'm waiting on the chance of being able to increase my hours to submit. I have everything else done though. What's nice about being an undergrad at UM gets you an auto interview at the PT program

Hey, I don't know about the other schools that you applied to but I'm currently attending MWU-Glendale and I got in with stats like yours (My GRE was low). They care a lot more about your interview than your stats. Hope that helps you a little! If you get an interview (I think you will) message me and I can give you some advice.

I just got an email from GRU, too for an interview on 10/9. This is my first interview so I'm super excited!
How did you like attending GRU and what are some strong points you've noticed about their program being in Augusta for a few years?

The undergraduate school was fairly enjoyable, I liked the smaller class sizes, and I was fortunate enough to have a few excellent professors within the pre-pt program. The medical college is located in the heart of Augusta's medical district, and the facilities are incredible. I have the privilege of knowing a few PTs who went through the program and I can only hope to become half the therapist that they are.

If you don't mind me asking, is your interview for UNG for an alternate spot? I got a call yesterday to schedule an interview (the 18th so I'll also have to reschedule since I'll be at GRU) but she said she needed to let me know that the interviews were for alternates. I'm surprised they have their class filled so early.

Yep, it's for an alternate position. I'm surprised as well, maybe we just applied a little too late. I guess we'll be at the same interview next week for GRU!

Yes we will be! I just called UNG back today, turns out they won't reschedule me (said she could put a note by my name but doubts there will be more interviews). I had a feeling they would fill mostly from ED (I submitted my app in mid July), a little disappointing but obviously I can't reschedule GRU for an alternate interview so thats how life goes.
