No, no, once you get 10 miles outside of Manhattan, you are "upstate"

Of course, none of that is real New York anyway. In fact, it barely qualifies as "New york"

Go Long Island!
whoa whoa whoa, as a true upstater i just have to chime in again (was doing biochem hmk). TRUE upstate is anything above buffaloish (sorry david)... and cowgirla........ NYC is Not the only part of NY you know, even though most of the rest of the world thinks so

ok rant over

Hey, that's cool. I've looked at a few, and there were no opportunities like that (even though they did have vets). I did get to foster and help in the shelter a little (well, I could have done so more, but my work schedule did not permit it). Fostering was fabulous, and it gave me a ton of animal experience hours (not to mention darling little kitties to play with).

Not to jump topics, but people calculate fostering as animal experience hours?? How am I going to calculate that! I don't want to list some ridiculous number on my application, but if that can be a separate category then alrighttttt.

The only hours I included for fostering was the amount of time I actually spent syringe feeding, vaccinating, medicating, etc... for them. I felt like if I put down 5,000hrs fostering kittens/puppies along with 2,000hrs wildlife rehab or something... it would trivializes my wildlife work. I did put down how many animals I fostered altogether along with the fact that I took home sick animals for the vet services dept I think. I figured it sounded more honest and I didn't feel like I was doing a disservice to myself because I'm sure adcoms could figure out how much more time I actually spent with the foster work without them feeling like I was padding my experience hours.

Kinda like how I think if you do something like habitat for humanity and go for a 2 week trip... you should only count the hours you spent building homes, not 24hrs x 14 days.

Um, where I'm from, Westchester IS upstate. I'm just sayin.

And to the OP, I think a good plan if all else fails is to make appointments at all of the local clinics for your dog/cat/chinchilla, and block the vets exit from the exam room with you until he agrees to let you shadow 😀

Except if they block the door so YOU cant leave, the bills could add up pretty quick...whats an office visit fee for a chilla run in the area??? $40 x 10 vet clinics....

Or offer to provide a free neuter to a cat from some no-kill rescue... take the cat to a doc and during the visit ask if you can watch the surgery, go to the surgery with lots of baked goods, get enthralled with the surgery... and then as you thank the vet profusely, go

I think you're f***ing amazing! Can I please come in and shadow some? I want to go to vet school in the future, and I'd really like to learn from an awesome vet like you!

I actually do not have any pets at the moment. However, I do have a friend in the area who has a young beagle. I will most likely be staying with them temporailry until I find my own place so I would have her all to myself during the days. I will not rule that out!

So just to be clear: Do not ask to "volunteer" but ask about paid positions-assistant. If they dont have anything, then ask to shadow?

Thanks!

Yeah. I asked VMCAS and told them my general responsibilities fostering. They said that it counts as animal experience, and to estimate the hours, they told me to figure out how much time I actually spent hands on with my fosters. Sure, they were at my place 24/7, but I was also working full time, going out to eat, seeing friends, oh yeah, and sleeping!

I also probably under estimated a little because I didn't want to look like I was lying/padding, and I already had plenty of SA vet experience.

They don't allow my type at Russel sage; so RPI it would be.

My husband is an RPI grad. We see quite a few in his field, but not quite so common in ours! For the long islanders on the list, he grew up in E. Hamptom before 'the hamptons' were anything more than potato farms.

This is basically how I got my volunteering gig..lol - I brought my dog in for a bladder infection with my resume in hand and basically tied myself to the treatment table. 🙂 It worked great and now that vet and I are great pals, lol!! 🙂 I was getting just a little desperate...

Truely.... which is why i was so blown away when they listed the stats for my class and I found out there are actually 2 RPI grads in my class here!

I had an odd question for you guys: Is it possible for me to keep florida residency for admission purposes? I am 24 and called UF and they said at my age I can no longer declare myself as a dependent. My parents own property in florida (where I am currently staying). I have a florida license and florida health insurance currently. However, I am moving back to new york for a job that does not provide health benefits (I cannot find any type of job in Florida).

I believe once I move to new york I would have to get a new york license in order to receive new york health insurance and I believe at this point my new york license will not allow me to be considered in state for UF admissions. Am I wrong?

I guess while I am moving, the odds of getting into IS at cornell are much lower then IS UF.

Thanks!

I believe that is accurate. Once you're no longer an official dependent of your parents, then I think you cannot count their residency as your own.

This gets tricky if your permanent address is your parents but you attend school in another state. However, if you are just working in another state, I think you can no longer consider yourself a FL resident.
