so a friend of mine just got accepted to UMDNJ. his friend( who i dont know) also graduated with him and applied to dental schools everywhere. they both went to Rutgers by my friends friend went two years to a community college. his GPA is 3.9 and his DAT scores are all around 22-21. he applied to like 20 schools and didnt get in. im really disappointed cause im in county college too and even if i score that good i wont even get an interview. anyone else have different experience

Maybe his personal statement sucked.....there were likely other factors, perhaps his people skills aren't there? Maybe he's in it for the wrong reasons and they saw right through him? Don't count yourself out and because of community college. Transfer out to a University for next fall.

Hundreds of students get in every year having taken classes at a CC or JC. Likely the friend of a friend just sucked in other areas of his application. Get a good GPA and DAT and you will do just fine!

I spent a year at a community college, and I still got in just fine. I do think that they recommend taking pre-requisite science classes at 4 year institutions though.

while its possible to get in w/ some community college courses.. i definitely believe that you are putting yourself at a disadvantage by continuing to go there. Pre-requisites or upper level courses... CC classes are NOT considered the same as a 4 yr traditional college. When it comes down to it, and the admissions committee has similar applicants (high GPA+ DAT) they will give the 4 yr student an edge. I would get out of CC asap, if I were you.

Its possible to get in but again do ya really wanna decrease ur chances?

If you go to a CC, and do good at the 4 year, you are just as good as the other applicants. This was confirmed by all the admissions members that I spoke to (>10). They all said they don't care as long as you can prove to them you can do good by holding the same grades at a 4 year. They know that A LOT of kids go to CC because college is expensive. Even if you go to a CC because you couldnt get in anywhere else, doing well at the 4 year will prove youre worthy.


Stop complaining. Your friend just had a weak application. People ALWAYS try to blame their non acceptances on CC. ITS NOT THE CC. If you do well at a 4 year, you'll be fine and if you suck at a 4 year, it shows you can't handle the material and don't deserve the same consideration.

I went to CC for 3 years (1 ESL year lol ). Got into my top choice this cycle.

I understand your concern. I used to be in the same situation. A friend of mine who has 3.8 GPA, 20+ DAT and went to CC. He got around 3 interviews each cycle and still cant get in. This cycle is his third time trying (he already got into 2 pharmacy schools without his PCAT). I feel bad for him. The guy is really nice and smart sigh. Sometimes life sucks.

My pre reqs to transfer are the same as ds. I've heard it depends on the cc. People have stated cc courses are more difficult than universities.

I would have to question his personal statement..

I have an AS from a community college. I have pretty good stats, see below, and I have had 6 interview invites (UNC, ECU, USC, OSU, UCSF, CWRU), I went on 3 interviews (ECU, UNC, OSU) and received two acceptances (UNC & OSU). The CWRU and the UCSF interview invites just came in, but not interested in them as UNC is one of the top dental school in the country, but also one of the cheapest.

I wouldn't worry about it. Rock out school and the DAT, and make sure you have a kick ass personal statement and you'll get interviews.. Then its up to you to connect!

At least half my credits (I have 150+) are from CCs; and the majority of my university level courses are non-science, including graduate courses in history. I wouldn't boast about my interviews/acceptance so far, but I've got them, so even if my background hurt me, it didn't hurt that much.

I'll never understand the CC hate, stigmas are awful. The rising tuition costs at universities is also awful. I'll be happily taking two classes this upcoming semester at a CC, saving a few thousand dollars because of it and using that money in part for a trip to Spain and Morocco the summer before dental school starts. 😉

OP: Keep your grades up, study seriously regardless of where you take your classes, do well on the DAT, and you'll be fine. Of course, if you're deficient in some other way (outside your academic proficiency), then that's another story and has nothing to do with having attended a CC.

I took 64 credits (got my Associates) and then transferred to 4-year. I will be graduating (could have graduated now) this spring with no increase or change in the amount of hours needed.

I also experienced no difference for there to be a "hate" against CC. As a matter of fact, I found my education at the CC to be more personal and more "in-depth" then some of my classes at 4 year. Simply due to class size and ability to ask questions, get to know my prof, etc.

If a d-school doesn't dig the CC, I probably wouldn't want to go there...

Again, there are more factors in play than JUST your CC experience.

Agree... the GPAs at CC, 4-yr college, and DAT scores should sync and complement one another. There are numerous 4-yr private colleges that inflate grades (How can they give Cs and Ds to those who pay 40K/yr??). It is more important that all scores point to similar competencies in an application. Remember - those on the Adcom are experienced folks who look at things with an open mind and know how to dissect an application.

ahh ok. I was always curious whether people who went to a CC got in the usual way (4 years, no masters, just bachelors) way. Anyways, I'm sure there are some good CC's out there. The CC's that my friends go to around my area say that it is really easy.

I went to a community college and WAS accepted into UMDNJ this year. I have had 4 interviews so far. I have two more post december interviews coming up at Midwestern IL and NYU. My stats are sGPA 3.3 nonscience GPA 3.8. overall GPA 3.4. DAT 20 TS 20 PAT 19. To say you won't get into dental school because you went to CC is irrelevant. There are many factors which go hand and hand with acceptance. It depends on when your friend applied, instate/out of state, personal statement, how the interview went, dental shadowing, communication skills, manuel dexterity etc. Does going to a CC hurt your chances of getting into tufts, and harvard? Yes it does. But there are many other dental schools which accept them.

And that is the crux to all of this.

Scoring in the top 90th percentile on the DAT will lock you in, for the most part.. You need to have a great personal statement.

ditto.. spent 3 years in CC( began at very low level math and writing) but I raised my GPA in the 2 years I spent at a cheap university :thumb up: so my debt has just begun in my first year of D school 🙂

By the way I just finished all of my prereqs at the CC this semester. 4.0 GPA so far. I start at Rutgers in the spring of 2012 to take on Genetics, neuroscience, and other crap. CANT WAIT..........

CC transfer here. Only 1 science prereq done at CC the rest done at a real school. I think taking most of my prereqs at the 4-year helped a lot (a lot of schools asked about it).
