Iowa State c/o 2018 applicants!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Rejected. I expected it to be this way because of the long term sentence in CR. A real bummer though. I had a lot of hope for Iowa State. 🙁

No one on SDN has been accepted yet? That's kinda surprising...
Ah well, got into my top choice anyway, so not too concerned at this point.

I have been in committee review this entire time, like a couple other SDNers. and I just got an update--I was rejected. Why did they make me wait so long with this fake hope just to give me a rejection.... -_______-

I am so, so sorry. I REALLY don't like that ISU did that to you guys. I personally think it reflects poorly on the school. Us applicants invest a ton of time, money, and effort into these schools. No one deserves to be kept waiting THAT long, and for a negative outcome...

Couldn't agree more. That's a weird way of notifying people...

i think they did it because in the past they had to rescind rejections which looks terrible on their part but either way it sucks =/

Time for a new system! Both ways make them look terrible in my opinion

Thank you SB and everyone else. I know we were all itching to know the status of apps. I agree it was a really poor way to handle it and their timing is awful. My school just finished the first quarter so pretty much exams galore. I was expecting an email on Friday at the earliest.

Unfortunately, I checked my email on a break in my art class. I couldn't help but open my portal. 🙁 I blew it off until right before class ended and it started setting in as I read all the other posts. Right now I am grateful for a short walk, an empty apartment, and loud country music. :drowning: 😢

Even worse about being in CR is that neither my application status nor my application result has changed. Still listed in CR. If I hadn't read the message half a dozen times, then I wouldn't think a damn thing had changed!! Maybe this is a bad dream...

Congratulations to the new acceptances to ISU and for the wait listers (waiting is tough, I get that, but it is better than a rejection). Keep it in perspective. The more announcements made, the better chance things have of working out! 😉

P.S. I could go for a rescinded rejection right now or in the near future. 🙄 Oh well, here's to planning my off year!! I think it's time to get a puppy!!

Accepted OOS!! So excited, Iowa State was definitely my top choice after visiting. Good luck to everyone who is on the wait list!!

Oh my goodness....I think I still might be in denial... but I GOT ACCEPTED!! 😍 I can't believe it, I am going to be a vet! :biglove:

I'm really sorry. That is the lamest thing a school could do. I was OOS waitlisted too but I expected it. My interview was kind of crappy so I didn't expect to get far. Congrats to anyone who got accepted.

Denied OOS. I am pretty upset, but trying to be positive about waiting to hear from my in-state school.

Accepted, OOS!
I'm waiting to hear from MN (my IS), and if I get in there I'm going to make a huge pros/cons list because I really liked ISU.

congrats! Good luck on MN. Have you interviewed yet? If you get in to both, tough call to make. Both are great schools. Count your lucky stars on getting in to ISU!!!

I interviewed on the 30th and had a really good experience. It's just so hard to compare schools. I'm ecstatic about getting into ISU though!

Waitlisted- OOS... I'm likely going to take myself off the list though. Hopefully someone else on the waiting list moves up! Congrats to everyone who was accepted!

Exact same boat. Why make us wait for a rejection?!

I had also been in CR this whole time..gave up on ISU a longgggg time ago

Received my portal message yesterday.....listed an an OOS "alternate." Is that different than being wait listed?

Hey guys, first post on SDN. I was accepted OOS, still waiting on IS, but I am in love with ISU. Does anyone know how hard it is to get residency in Iowa?

This makes me wonder if they SHOULD revamp their system. Before I got rejected, I was watching everyone post about their movements into CR even though they missed the "Priority Deadline." I made that deadline and my application was not even touched until November. Strange.

I'm thinking that a system revamp would be very beneficial. I am really unsure of the reason they listed a "priority deadline" since the organization/system seemed very random. Speaking of CR, I'm still listed as such. They did however change my application result to "Deny". :bored: Gosh, they are so friendly!! Seriously, I think reading "Deny" would have been worse than "Rejected" or something less evil. I feel like I just received the dreaded read stamp you see in movies!! Thanks Hollywood, it's been real, but how 'bout we never have to mention CR again. Is that too much to ask?

I have been denied since December and am still in CR. Pretty unhappy about the whole "priority deadline" situation, though. I didn't get all of my work done by the deadline just to have my application pushed to the side.

Here is the scoop from the Admissions Office on this:

Priority Deadline: Was an attempt to get applicants to submit materials early so they could get through the process quicker, rather than waiting until the process was bogged down with the onslaught of applications and application materials at the VMCAS deadline. They have evaluated this and determined that this did not work how they would have liked and therefore they don't think they will try that again.

Committee Review status and Deny: The reason it states it this way is more for internal purposes, but applicants can also use it to be aware at what stage of the process they were denied. For example, there are the following listings (in addition to the Committee Review/Deny) for different applicants:

Incomplete (not all materials submitted by deadline)/Deny
GPA to low (below cumulative 2.5 to apply)/Deny
Below Academic Cutoff (below the GPA cutoff determined by the Admissions Committee for applicants who have met the 2.5 GPA)/Deny
Interview-No Response (applicant did not reply after being offered an interview)/Deny
Interview-Accepted (applicant accepted interview, was interviewed but did not make the final admissions cut) /Deny

If you have any questions they are happy to answer them so if you guys want to ask a question you probably should just send them a message.

Hey Guys.. a note on this post,

"Priority Deadline: Was an attempt to get applicants to submit materials early so they could get through the process quicker, rather than waiting until the process was bogged down with the onslaught of applications and application materials at the VMCAS deadline. In fact, the attempt at a priority submission date did, in fact, have an incredible response. Before this year, 85% of our applicants hit submit two weeks before the deadline. This year, 50% of our applicants hit submit two weeks before the deadline. So the September 1st recommended submission data saw a 35% decrease in the amount of backlog VMCAS typcially sees. That said, we will continue to encourage a September 1st submission date, but we WILL NOT be accepting late transcripts this year. If it's not in our office by October 2nd, we won't accept it. 🙂

The previous reply by deadvet specfically addressed Iowa State's statement of that college's PRIORITY DEADLINE. It had nothing to do with VMCAS Priority Deadline.

Thanks for the clarification. 🙂

Well, if they should choose to try it again, I'd suggest ISU give it a much more accurate title than "Priority." It still doesn't make sense why some of use submitted earlier than the "Priority deadline" and didn't have our application looked at until after those who didn't make the deadline.

As for VMCAS, (this could probably go in another thread...) pushing a September 1st date is unnecessary. Just change the final deadline to September 1st then. There is no point in having a pseudo-deadline when you will still process applications if everything is in by October 2nd. Everything was very confusing and a lot of questions and doubts were created by pushing us to submit in September!

Thanks for the input. Actually, the AAVMC Admissions & Recruitment Committee had voted and agreed to move the official VMCAS deadline to September 1st. HOWEVER, as a matter of practice, we opened a poll to hear what students thought of that idea. Out of the 6,700+ students we polled, over half told us that moving the deadline to September would NOT be favorable. As such, we are leaving the deadline October 2nd, 2014. The October 2nd deadline will NOT be extended this year. So by October 2nd, ALL evaluations, transcripts, application data and application fees will be due by 1pm Eastern Time. That said, it's important to remember to allow a few weeks of processing time for Transcript Verification! September 1st is NOT an official deadline, it's a RECOMMENDED submission date to allow the verification process time in case there's any problems.

Hope this helps 🙂

also for those of you that interviewed will you mind sharing thoughts on what impressed you about the campus and what you thought made the program unique and whatnot? I am an alternate and so if I get off the waitlist I want a better idea of what the schools about, (I've been doing all my research on their website, but I want thoughts from you guys.) Note: I interviewed by skype ( so I missed all the fun activities, including student pannels, on interview weekend)

THANKS!

There is an Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine -class of 2018 facebook group but it is closed. Let me know if you can't find it! I can't figure out how to share it :/ It would be great to get more people in it as there are only 9 now

emetty90 it's not showing up for me when I search for the page 🙁 could you send me a link? Thanks!!

I am pulling my name off of the wait list. I got into my IS school this week 😀 best of luck to those who are waiting!

Has anyone ever done the D-PIKE dairy cow summer program through ISU? I am just looking for feedback on the experience.

Does anyone have information on why ISU is listed as having probationary accredidation?

The ISU Veterinary College has submitted additional materials that are under review by the accrediting AVMA Education Board. This change in status does not have an adverse impact on the College’s accreditation. As such, this will not affect student licensing or graduation from the College. Iowa State continues to have a strong professional program, with state-of-the-art facilities, and a dedication to students by our faculty and staff.

Thanks! I didn't see that part. I wouldn't worry about to much though. With well established programs such as these they probably just needed to provide more clarification and documentation on certain aspects of the curriculum....well that's been the case in my dealings with the accreditation process for human med schools at least.

I definitely still have great confidence in ISU's program, and can't wait to start in August- I was just curious about the cause for probationary accredidation in their case.
