Iowa State CVM - Class of 2017- Interviews

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does anyone have any suggestions on places to make sure to see? I'm going to come in early afternoon on the 19th to walk around the general ISU campus and get a feel for Ames. Any dinner recommedations?
Honestly, it's not worth taking the time to walk around main campus.

Why? It's nice (I also went here for undergrad), but it's about 2 miles northwest of the veterinary campus, parking is horrible if you're not an undergrad, and you will be spending very little time over there during vet school. As far as the vet school goes, the hospitals and academic areas are all in one (large) building. Don't plan to wander around it on your own (you won't be allowed to) -- you'll get a tour the day of your interview.

I'd spend your time driving around Ames if you want to get a feel for the city. Some places to start getting an idea of what you want to see/where you want to eat (since those depend on what you're interested in and what you like) are http://www.cityofames.org/ and http://www.visitames.com/About_Ames/.

check out Main Street area

these are the best places to eat, in this order: 🙂
The Cafe (Northridge Parkway) !!
Aunt Maude's (Main Street)
Dublin Bay (S. 16th ?)
Olde Main Brewery (Main Street)
Great Plains Sauce & Dough (Main Street)

oh and I forgot Hickory Park! I would say that's #2... under The Cafe

So scared for the interview! I am so nervous that I am going to look like a deer in the headlights when they start asking behavioral questions 🙁 I have tons of stories but am nervous to blank out

Congrats on the interviews! So uh, if we haven't heard anything from Iowa at this point, should we be concerned? My online status still says it's in committee review and I have not been contacted. I realize there are a few different interview dates as listed, but I feel like we should be hearing from them already for the later interviews. Any re-applicants have any ideas?

Last year I made it past the initial big wave of rejections in december-ish. They didnt reject me until after the last weekend of interviews. I called during the time period leading up to last few weekends of interviews and they told me that I was on the waitlist for an interview, but they wouldnt tell me any ranking.

Anyways, with a year of extra hard work, they offered me an interview in the second wave of invitations. What I will say, is when I scheduled my interview this year I had the option of taking the weekend of the 20/21 or the 26/27. Im not sure if they have any planned later than that.

If you get waitlisted this year for an interview, take it as they think your almost ready. If you find yourself applying next year, then this is the year to improve your application to show them that you ARE ready.

Hey guys-
Has anyone done a skype interview with IA State or any other school? I can't make it to the actual interview, so any advice on this type would be greatly appreciated!

I can't stop freaking out about this interview next week.... So nervous I will draw a blank of a behavioral question 🙁 🙁

Thanks for the information and encouragement, Virginger!

Hey guys, so I posted this question on the applicants thread, but no one answered me. So I figured I would give it a go on here 🙂. I have an interview on the 27, and I am flying into Des Moines on Sat, getting a rental car and driving to Ames. Does anyone know of hotels that are nearby the school? Im so excited!

This is from the interview information page. I'm pretty sure that the Days Inn and Gateway Hotel are the closest (5-6 minutes, depending on traffic) and that the AmericInn, Country Inn & Suites, and the Econo Lodge are the next closest (closer to 10 minutes, depending on traffic).

Thanks! I just actually checked my Iowa messages and realized that everything I was looking for was on there...oops. But its good to know which ones are closest, so thank you!

Im sure your almost there! I got rejected everywhere last year 🙁 except for a waitlist at Oregon State. If grades are the challenge (which it is for me), I think ISU is the programs that considers applicants that are other wise great. If your close this year, then I really think hard work can help get in the door. Your welcome to PM me if your trying to figure out what to do next. I am always happy to co-conspire for success! lol

I have my interview tomorrow, and I am staying in the Memorial Union Hotel. The hotel is located in a student center type of building on the regular ISU campus, about a mile away from the vet admissions office. I am about to walk there, it looks pretty easy. I'd recommend staying here, the rates were decent and you get to see campus. Welch Ave is a 3 minute walk away (apparently where a lot of student-populated restaurants/bars are), and you can literally take an elevator downstairs to Panda Express, Subway, and some sort of cafeteria. Congrats on the interview!

So I was wrong, its a pretty long walk from Memorial Union to the vet school. I will be taking a taxi tomorrow (although on weekdays there is a bus that runs from main ISU campus to the vet school). Just a heads up!

I have a morning interview next weekend and I was wondering if the interview program ends at 12:00 for the morning interviewers or does it go longer? I know it says we have to stay the full time & I just want to be able to tell my ride an approximate time to pick me up. 🙂

Yup, you'll be done at noonish.

for those of you who have gone already... was there any kind of breakfast/coffee in the morning involved in the registration period? My hotel doesn't start breakfast in time. 🙁

So I'm going to do the biggest internet no-no ever... I ended up coming up to Iowa by myself. I was thinking of doing dinner in the main street area but feel odd dining alone. If anyone else is looking for a dining companion, PM me (however, if you have not posted on SDN prior, I will not respond).

There were bagels, coffee and fruit if I remember correctly

It's crazy windy here, guys! Also the gas station made me LOL..."Kum & Go". Baaad!!!

Hehe... I was trying to be an adult about that one...

I am so rediculously nervous. I keep looking at the questions and worrying my answers stink. Or that my mind will go totally blank when they ask me. Wishing I did some mock interviews before coming!

I can see the vet school from my hotel's elevator though. Wake up call is scheduled for way too early tomorrow.

At least you have answers. I worked Sunday through Friday, my cat was hospitalized with pancreatitis thurs through this morning, and I haven't slept more than 2 or 3 hours per night in 3 days.

don't worry (well, as best you can!) if you blank on a response! I had one where I just couldn't think of something that quite fit and I ended up talking through a similar thing that didn't quite answer the question with my interviewers and we had a good talk about similar things! they were definitely not trying to stress me out and wanted me to feel comfortable the whole time.

Oh no! good luck, sorry to hear about your kitty.:luck:

and thanks for the encouragement kakurubird!

It wasn't terrible, but I'm glad it's over. Flying back home tomorrow afternoon to my poor recovering kitty.

Did anyone else have trouble coming up with an answer for some of the behavioral questions? Also, many of my back to back questions were repetitive, asking the same thing in a different way. Enough so that I got the comment "I know you just answered this, but..." several times.

I had prepped the questions on the interview page, so I had thought of multiple examples that could work for each. I did get one that I really reached for an answer on and kind of rambled pointlessly, then got lost in the middle and didn't really remember the question any more! My interviewers seemed to have a list of questions that they were choosing from- like that maybe there were categories and there were several questions in that category? So I would say two or three questions were close, but different enough I thought of other examples to use to highlight a different experience/quality I had (ie, leadership, professionalism, etc).

Hey all: If anyone is on the alternate list and has denied that spot since the portal update last week or is planning on denying their spot, please post that on here so the rest of us can have a better idea of what number we're at. Thanks!

I just declined my waitlist offer since I have already decided on Michigan state. Good luck to everyone still waiting to hear.

I was accepted for class of 2017 and I'm pumped!! Who are my future classmates? 🙂
