Iowa State, where are you?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hrrmmm nothing here either but there is still one more interview weekend left 2/8-2/9 so there is still some hope (small though it may be).

Maybe tomorrow will bring better news for the rest of us!

Congrats on the interview... I wish they would let me know! haha. Just waiting!

Good luck for those of you interviewing tomorrow and Saturday :luck:! Be prepared for lots of snow and frigid temperatures (particularly if you're interviewing Friday morning)... we've got another winter storm rolling through.

Interviewing on Saturday. Driving on snow/ice roads has me a bit nervous but that can't be helped. I'll Iditarod it if need be.

Anyone interviewing tomm ? All the interview feedback is gone and I’m interviewing Saturday, post some tips and good luck hopefully the questions wont be too bad?

I got my itinerary today - I'm interviewing the afternoon of Saturday, 1/23. Is anyone else going then?

I am just about chewing my nails off!!!!! I NEEEED to hear back from ISU NOW!! I am holding on to the last bit of hope within me

Has anyone been invited for a February interview?

I just got an interview invite through email but I am 100% sure I am withdrawing my application, so someone from SDN might need to pack their bags for the Jan 30 interview date!

Well congrats junior on the invite even though you are withdrawing. I haven't gotten an invite yet and I'm getting super worried!

Btw..the 30th? I thought interviews were this weekend, the 23rd and start of Feb. Did they add more dates or move the feb dates to jan?

Well congrats junior on the invite even though you are withdrawing. I haven't gotten an invite yet and I'm getting super worried!

Hahahah me too! Maybe with all these withdrawls I will get someones invite😀

The email said the next interview date is Jan 30 with a morning session and an afternoon session being offered. It said interviews are 1 hour, behavioral style and there are 3 interviewers. Then there is a questionaire attached where you select your preference for morning or afternoon interview time. I'm goin to decline the offer now, I hope someone here gets my spot! Good luck!

Yeah I'm that afternoon as well.

I don't know what I'm wearing yet, but I can almost guarantee that I'll take a header at some point, so look for the klutz with curly hair. 😀

BTW, that's a gnarly radiograph in your avatar -- what's the story behind it?

Since I'm going to Cornell, I have canceled my interview right away. I hope some of you that did not get a call back, end up being invited for an interview. Best of luck!

Anyone interviewing in the afternoon on the 24th? I'd like to meet a few SDN'ers when I'm there.

Well I could describe myself in detail, but it's probably easiest to go with the fact that I'm the tall chick with the lame braces 😡 (I'm also the one constantly complaining about the cold because Cali has good practical weather!) Give me a holler via pm if you want to grab food the night before or the morning of and do practice questions or whatever. I'll be flying in Friday and leaving Sunday I think...I should probably make that reservation. Ugh, money.

Radio is cat vs fan belt. We took the radio after the leg was removed just to see what it looked like, and got some fun shots!

Poor kitty! I'm guessing they had crawled up under the hood to stay warm, although no self-respecting Maryland cat would consider Cali to be cold. :d

That's a good idea! I'll definitely contact you closer to the date so we can meet up.

I GOT AN INTERVIEW!!!!!!!!! For the 30th! Woot! :soexcited::soexcited::soexcited::soexcited::soexcited::soexcited::soexcited::soexcited::soexcited::soexcited::soexcited:

It ISU even open today? They are getting lots of snow.

ISU was open today, and driving in snow is a bitch. I hate this stuff already.

Welcome to our lovely weather. I don't know about Ames, but NW Iowa is supposed to hit -27 tonight, regular temp (no, that's not the wind chill folks). What a great time to be around! Trust me guys, it's not this cold all the time.

Good luck all with your interviews. Oh, and if you haven't driven on snow before, whatever you do - don't use cruise and definitely don't hit the brakes on the highway 😱

Congrats!!! I feel my hope fading away 🙁

Me too. Still no rejection yet though, so we shouldn't give up entirely yet.

Best of luck to those of you with upcoming interviews, however! As crazy as it sounds, you do eventually get used to the -20s and they really don't seem so bad as long as there's not wind. Just wear long underwear (men's are generally warmer than women's, fwiw) and dress in layers! I don't know how many -20 days Iowa gets every year, but here in Minnesota it's a rare year when there aren't at least a handful. Tonight will likely be our third one so far this month.

Well boys and girls tomm is the big day! Im nervous and excited to get this interview going. Anyone from today have any tips or head up they would like to share?

PS. For a guy from Florida its so COLD

It's ridiculously cold! I got frost bite THROUGH my freaking glove!

Which was fine because I went to JC Penny's to buy a new pair of gloves and got to solicit help from an extremely cute redhead.

Hate to be nosy but I wonder who that is? They must have completely obliterated their interview and brought cookies as back up or something. Wasn't aware that GPA was even considered.

<snerk>

What kind of cookies do you suppose I should bring? Or are chocolates better?

I'm guessing that those weren't all the same person. Maybe a non-trad had a low cumulative and sGPA but a rocking last 45, and maybe someone had a decent first part of their college career but their last 3 semesters sucked because they worked 57 hours a week and their guinea pig was going through chemo or something.

I booked my plane tickets but haven't reserved a hotel room. Any hotels that had great deals? Decent and affordable? Any that were horrible and had cockroaches (I'm allergic to cockroaches)?

I know it's been asked on here already but I can't see any replies...does anyone know how many OOS students Iowa interview??? Did they mention anything to those of you who have already interviewed??

They didn't say how many out of state...but they did say they are planning to interview about 430 students and that they had over 1000 applicants.

For those yet to interview - It is SO COLD! But the people are SO NICE, which sort of makes up for the cold!

On Friday, Jan 8th, received OOS interview invite for Jan 30th

Dang, that's a lot of applicants and a lot of interviews. Guess I don't feel so special now. 😉

I second that 🙁. but whatever, I'll do my best to not think about that. But I don't get the 2.76/2.22/2.53 GPAs...probably an IS

Does everyone think it would be totally unprofessional to call up Iowa state and ask if my application has been rejected yet?

I have heard nothing yet and I am in doubt whether there will be another interview round as some people got invites last week for Jan 30.

Only reason I am so antsy is I am taking a public speaking course just to fulfill an Iowa state pre-req (and paying for it out of pocket) and if I knew by the 15th I was rejected I could drop the class for a full refund.

Not sure what protocol/politeness says on this one.

Perhaps you can explain the situation about the course and ask what the status of your application is?

I am in the same boat as you.

I was in the same position as well! I called last week and all she could tell me was that they were still reviewing my application. I would definitely call and try to explain your situation to them.

Good luck!!

Well I sent an email explaining my situation, not sure if I will get a response back or not. I have until the 15th to drop the class for a full refund so if I don't hear by thursday I will call as well.

Will let you all know if there is a response🙄

No kidding. The lead lady (who's name I can't remember at the moment) that kind of organized everything was ridiculously nice.

Also, Hopefulag - is that for Iowa?!?!

Yah that's for Iowa. I pulled that list off their website but they give you a big ol' packet of stuff at the interview and that was in there as well.

Ok so a bit about my interview:

I stayed at the Microtel which had a very nice room (wall mounted flat screen, wireless internet, etc) and was only $56 a night (no ISU discount). The desk clerk, Tabby, was extremely nice and helpful in finding the vet school, places to eat, to buy stuff (had to buy new gloves since I got frostbite THROUGH the pair I bought here in Texas), and so on.

Day of interview: Went out to my (rental) car (a Kia Sportege, which I wouldn't recommend to my worst enemy) at 12:00 and it wouldn't start! Oi!! So called a cab and he got me there in time.

Was met as I went in the door by the people checking people in right as you enter. By the way, it says 'double doors' in the e-mail, but it's actually 'double doors separated by a pane of glass' and not the actual double doors off to the side as you walk up the side walk.

Then I followed them to the room where you kind of congregate. They take your picture first and then you're free to go wherever. Also they do have a coat rack so you can put your stuff some where, which was nicer than my other plan of just taking it into the interview and banging it under the chair.

I went to the Welcome speech and the Financial Aid speech and the Welcome speech was nice, just a 'this is Iowa' kind of deal. The Financial Aid speech was pretty much the same as the one at Ohio, with the exception of you can't really gain Iowa residency without marrying someone. So if there's any single Iowans here: (one knee) will you marry me? 😉

I then went and got fit for a white jacket (not the kind with straps) which they want everyone to do and then by that time it was time for my interview. (bolded for those just skimming to the good stuff)

Interview: So I was picked up in the Alumni room which is kind of like the staging grounds for the whole operation (there's free food and drink there btw). Shook hands, walked with them down the room, and there were 3 interviewers: 2 males, 1 female. Soon as I walked in and sat down the lady asked for a peppermint, which the plate of mints was conveniently very close to me. However another interviewer was also close to it (closer, I think) so I just yielded to him to give it to her. I don't know if that was a 'test' of some sort so was curious as to whether others had that happen to them?

They were all really nice and started off with introducing themselves and then they asked me to introduce myself (the 'tell me about yourself' question). After that they asked some behavioral stuff which was all pretty much covered in the past-interview feedback area. Stuff like 'tell me about a situation where you took control', 'tell me about an innovative concept you've had', and my favorite 'tell me about a concept you've had difficulty with' because I couldn't think of anything vet related so I started talking about quantum mechanics and astrophysics lol. So if they didn't think I was completely crazy after that, hopefully it'll stick as a "I remember that guy!" kind of thing.

All in all I think it went well. They do provide a swivel chair for you to sit in so don't swivel! I was consciously thinking "no matter how fun it is, don't!...we've been through this at OSU already!"

After that I went to the tour which was...well a tour. It's all in-doors and was pretty much what you'd expect to see I guess. Nothing really stood out as "well that's cool" except for the $0.50 candy and their stuffed mascot that they had to put behind glass because people kept rubbing the head for good luck lol.

Oh and to any other guys: the ladies, all around Iowa, from the desk clerk at the hotel to the ladies in the stores to the ones at the interview (vet students and other applicants) were pretty darn good looking. Just something I noticed.

Tell you what... you put in the good word for me at Iowa, and if they let me in, I'll move to Iowa, become a resident, and marry you!

Love is in the air... or is that desperation?

According to the 'vet school hot' thread, they are one and the same.
