Iowa State, where are you?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Was that the only school you applied to?

Even if you do get rejected everywhere this year, you're in good company. Look at the Third Timer's thread lol. PLUS all the VMCAS information saves over to next year! No having to fill in 500 blanks to insert two classes!

Yay, cowgirla! Congratulations! We all are definitely going to have to get together for dinner on Saturday night or something. 🙂

It's a date! Hopefully, I'll be in the Garden Inn with you as well. Sounds like my best bet, and one of the most affordable. (Plus--Jacuzzi? How can I go wrong??) Now I just need to know what day my interview is so I can book everything!

No, not the only school, I applied to a total of 3 schools. This was my trial run to see how the application process goes and see what I need to improve. I'm really not too bummed because I wasn't expecting anything, you know? I'm a "viable candidate" at Kansas and PEI hasn't sent anything out yet that I know of. I am excited that the VMCAS stuff saves over, I didn't know that! That is going to make my life so much easier next time.

Thanks to everyone for your support and good luck to everyone that has interviews!

I heart anyone that can be positive about a rejection.👍

Whenever I get one I get pissed and depressed (it is a bad combo).

Good luck with your other schools🙂

Does anyone really have a handle on the living situation at ISU? I hear that living in one of the two nearby trailer parks is very common, especially for students with dogs. I tried to ask a little more about this during my tour, but my tour-guide didn't have dogs and lived in an apartment...

So, does anyone know if:

1) You actually buy the trailer? Does that send your loans through the roof?
2) If you do actually have to buy the trailer, does that give you the right to put in dog doors? Is there room for a dog run (I'm asking because I'd like my dog to have indoor/outdoor access while I'm at class).

If any current students are lurking on this thread, or if someone knows a current student, I'd really like to hear more about living in Ames with dogs.

Good luck to everyone with interviews coming up! :luck:

Bearby, I hope you get good news from your other schools soon. 🙂

Yes, you do buy the trailers. It won't send your student loans through the roof if that's what you're asking, because you'll take out a home loan/mortgage to pay for the trailer. You have to make that payment plus lot rent each month, which is usually very similar to rent with local apartments depending on what type of a trailer you buy. Most lots would have room for a dog run, buy I'm almost 99% certain you can't put one in. You buy the trailer but rent the lot, and I'm pretty certain you won't be able to put a run on it - but I would call the associations and ask. Also, Old Orchard t.p. does allow dogs, but the next trailer park over (can't remember the name - but it's nicer and has bigger and newer trailers) only allows 1 pet total and I think there's a size restriction on dogs. I would like to live there but unfortunately have 3 dogs. I'm not sure about the dog door, but I don't see the advantage of one since I don't believe you can't fence anything in. I hope this helps, but calling each trailer park association will give you the best answers.

Morganator, thanks for the info!

If you don't mind my asking, where do you and your pack live? (House, apt., etc.) And about how much do you pay a month in rent?

Do you have time to run home at lunch to let them out?

Sun 7th interview! Yeah! Looks like I get to meet P now!

Anyone else going to be there the 7th?

Like Morganator said, you buy/rent a room in the trailer and rent the lot, so you can't put a dog run or a fence in or anything like that.

One of the reasons Old Orchard is particularly popular with students with dogs is that your "pet rent" is only $10/month, there are no size restrictions and no breed restrictions (other than pit bulls) on the dogs you can have. It's hard to beat that with the apartments around here.

As far as having dogs in the trailers--you certainly have time to run home and let your dog(s) out at some point. We have a lot of gaps in our schedule during first year, and the lunch hour (12-1) is always open, though electives and club meetings are usually held then. Ames has a leash law and you're expected to have your dog leashed and attended within Old Orchard even if you're on your lot. There is a trail that runs between the park and vet med to walk your dog, and plenty of parks--including a dog park--that you can visit.

If you wanted to contact both Creekside (the newer park, next to Old Orchard) and Old Orchard--they're run by the same people. If you don't have their contact information you can get it at http://www.amesoldorchard-creekside.com/.

Hope that helps!

Status has changed since this morning. DENIED. ARRRG!

Thanks everyone for the tips! I know this is like beating a dead horse (terrible saying, by the way), but I had a portable dog run (i.e., no fence posts IN the ground) in mind. I'm assuming these are also trailer park "illegal"?

I am already WAY over the 1 pet limit for the nicer trailer park. But if I get into ISU (fingers crossed!) I will definitely check out Old Orchard.

I'm sorry Bearby, ImaJerseyGirl, and radio2020 🙁. Rejections are tough!! But like others have said, you have next year to knock 'em dead with your renovated applications.

I called this afternoon and they said that anyone who still has not heard anything is still under review and that your status will change once you have been rejected. They said it could take as long as February 15th to hear something! so im guessing they may add interview days? that seemed weird but I just went with it.

They might add days based on the interviews they have, and who they choose to extend an invitation to. They may decided that there are a few candidates that they are still interested in!

Good luck everyone!

I too, still have not heard anything...

Feb 15th is the day that all interviewee's will know whether they are accepted/rejected/wait listed. That's what they told us on Sunday anyways.

Does iowa waitlist without interview?

Not to my knowledge since the interview is required for admission.

As far as any more interview dates... I highly doubt that there will be any. There's just no time between now and the 15th to hold any.

We should start a club

Yes! Rejectees Unite! The hardest part about all of the (5 and counting) is that out of all the schools I could apply to, I picked these because I truly did like them and it's a bit of a kick in the teeth all together. I kind of expected this one, I mean, no word for weeks while everyone else was getting interviewed. It wasn't as much of a bitch-slap as Missouri was. Regardless, I've got a box of wine for tonight.

Best of luck to those of you that have or will interview! :luck:

ETA: AND my Jet's lost AFC on Sunday. The week started off wrong to begin with!

If there are no more dates why wouldn't they notify everyone by now? I'm sure I am not the only one taking a speech class to meet their prereq. I could drop the class but instead I'm playing the waiting game. What's the point if there are no more interviews?

Does anybody know around how many OOS interviews they are having this year? I am just wondering because I have heard some really high numbers but on their website they only show having 386 qualified OOS applicants this year.

I only have total numbers but-

430 interviews out of 1096 applicants

Hmm, that link must be wrong on their website, because it shows 500 and something total applicants and 386 out of state applicants. Maybe thats all of the applicants being interviewed?

I think that 566 number is from a previous year. That set of data has been up for a long time, I think. If those are last year's numbers, however, that's a HUGE increase in applicants from 2009-09 to 2009-10!

My friend who interviewed already said they said they interviewed 420 OOS students.

I think it was OOS anyway, may have been both.

Anybody interviewing on the 6th?? Looks like it will be chilly!!! Looking forward to meeting some of you!

I laugh in the face of cold. We've had "highs" in the single digits pretty much every day the past few days. -15 and -20 nights all the time, and none of that is including wind chill

But yes, I'll be there on the 6th! My interview is in the afternoon.

I think we should have an SDN dinner or drinks or something on Saturday night. :-D

Parietal, I'm at the Garden Inn too, so we have no excuses for not meeting eachother!

Lol it would be awesome to see how many SDNers are interviewing!!

Totally agree! According to my GPS, there's a West Towne Pub next to the Garden Inn that looks kinda sports-bar-ish. Any locals have opinions on it?

Do people have time preferences? I'll be driving down from Minnesota on Saturday, so it doesn't matter to me.

Any and all welcome, of course!

I will be there on Sun but I assume the BF and I will be heading out on Sat or maybe even Fri as he is talking like he wants to make the trip into a snowmobile excursion for himself.

Do any locals know if there are any snowmobile trails in the area?

Hopefully I can talk him into staying at the Hilton so I can meet up with everyone.

My coworker who went to ISU for undergrad raves about the bbq place (non chain) in Ames, I need to get the name of it again from her though.

My interview is later on Saturday, so any time after 5:30 works for me--gives me time to change out of the monkey suit!

So my interview is Feb 7 and i'm currently planning on staying at the memorial union hotel (the one on campus). I did not want to rent a car and a shuttle from the airport will drop you off right at this hotel on campus. My question is how far is that spot from the vet school location. It is really hard to tell on a map exactly how far away the 2 places are. I noticed that the orange bus route will take you there but that conveniently does not run on the weekends....has anyone else stayed at the Memorial Union hotel for their interview...did anyone walk to the vet school from there? Anyone that currently goes to ISU have any tips??

Thanks

Hickory Park most likely. Go early, as it was an hour and a half wait when I tried while I was there for my interview. Also the daylight would help you be able to actually find the place lol. But it was held in high regards by the people I talked to and for a place that doesn't even have an illuminated sign, it was jam packed, so it must be good.

Shame too because I really wanted to see how Iowa BBQ compares to Texas BBQ.

The MU hotel (which is on main campus) is about 2 miles from the veterinary school (completely separate campus)... I've attached a map below. Honestly, there are closer hotels (see some of the previous posts), but you could take a taxi if you are definitely taking the shuttle from DSM. Or try to line up a ride.

As per Hickory Park--it's always that ridiculously busy. I personally don't think it's worth the wait, but that's probably because I don't like barbecue :d.

For those of you who have interviewed at ISU, can you tell me what you DIDN'T like about the school? Please be honest - it could mean one less competitor for you. 😉

While everyone was friendly, it didn't seem to have much atmosphere. The lower levels of the CVM were kind of dark (not well lit) where as at other places (Ohio for instance) it was bright and...cheery for lack of better word.

I imagine the dank feeling could grate on some people after a while.

Yeah, I was also frustrated by the fact that they don't run a bus to the vet school on weekends.

However, if you go around 5, Hickory Park is TOTALLY worth it. But maybe Maryland just has lousy BBQ compared to Iowa. 😛

I agree with both EE and Hopeful. Also, as a small animal person, the small animal facilities were not impressive. My tour guide probably mentioned "small animal" three times during the 40 minute tour. I know that they are renovating the SA wing, but it was something that I found somewhat disconcerting seeing as how the LA facilities were AMAZING!!! I discussed it with my interviewers and they assured me that by the time that I would be doing clinical work, the SA facilities would be complete.
And as far as food goes, Hickory Park was awesome. I ate for 2 days off of what I brought back to my hotel room. HOWEVER, the first day I was there I went to a place called The Fighting Burrito and WOW, if I never go back to Iowa for whatever reason, this burrito will haunt me forever. it was so good. and the rice crispy treats are the size of my face. I highly recommend it.
But overall, I really liked the school and staff. A few of the students were...less than helpful (but I might have just got stuck with a few duds). My tour guide was great though.

I felt the same way. But I liked the people in the school and the interview went well.

For those of you who are interview next weekend (or this weekend if you look at it that way) Don't worry... it's not THAT cold because you are basically just running from the car inside and then are inside the rest of the time.

My boyfriend and I went to hickory park and we weren't impressed at all. I definitely don't think it was worth the wait. We went to that old towne pub too, and it was decent. Very loud though and the fried corn appetizer was not cooked all the way through.

I dunno i don't think my interview went that well last weekend. My background is a bit weird and it's really hard to explain what i'm doing in such an open file situation, because it very much relates to how my questions get answered. Oh well!

I also Agree with HopefulAg, it was a bit on the dark side and seemed a bit run-down in parts. I am sure it will be much better after all of the renovations, etc. I really did like all of the staff/students though, they were friendly, obnoxiously friendly at times. This is the only school I have been to though. I will hit up WSU and see how it compares.

So for those of us interviewing this weekend, it sounds like the dinner choices are Hickory Park (reviews) or The Fighting Burrito (reviews). I'm not much of a BBQ person, but I'm willing to try either. Hickory Park doesn't do reservations on the weekends, unfortunately, so the line is inevitable. Both are pretty close to campus.

Do we want to aim for 6 p.m.?

Can't wait to meet you guys!

Thanks for the reviews, quantized. I had a similar issue with my Minnesota interview. I felt like I spent way too much time trying to explain my odd background and didn't get nearly enough time to talk about my vet experiences. I'm pretty sure they liked me, but I'm worried it was more that they thought I was probably very good at my old job but without seeing how that was related to vet medicine...

Well on the plus side you didn't set yourself as a complete and utter selfish user...sigh, yes, I really did this at my MN interview. It seemed like a good example at the time, but wasn't. Yikes! Wont be using that example at ISU, that is for sure!

Not sure when I am leaving to make trek down but 6pm dinner seems like a good goal.

Good luck to you guys this weekend. It looks like the weathers going to be good - the high right now is about 30 which is really nice for this time of year. Just remember that the interviews aren't as scary as you'd think...they really try to make you comfortable.
