K-State c/o 2017 Applicants!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So any OOS Kstate people current or future students, what are your plans to repay this 200k plus loan?

That's what my biggest concern is. I love K-State but it has a hefty price tag for OOS

Yup I'd have accepted immediately if not for the price.

I'm hoping to get in the Army! Whoo! (if I get in!)

Whelp, it is big $ to go to K-State as an OOS student, and I made peace with the fact that I will potentially be in debt for the rest of my life by attending this school. Add to that the fact that it is the only one of the three schools I applied to that I really wanted to go to, and it seems like I'm SOL 😀

Having paid for my undergrad myself, I have no student loan debt. Up until last month I had never filled out a FAFSA. Upon acceptance I started searching for scholarships to help whatever financial aid I might be awarded. It's my hope that I will be given a substantial amount of the tuition necessary for four years of DVM school through a Health Professions Student Loan. If K-State doesn't participate in this kind of loan then I will pursue some other federal loan. Second would be applying for the Health Professions Scholarship Program with the US Army. My SO is retired military and he highly encourages me to take this route. The program is highly competitive and I've already talked to a health professions recruiter. Lastly would be student loans through a private bank. This is not my preferred route but I have a long and substantial relationship with my bank, and I hope this will result in particular loan terms.

Now I'm just waiting for my accountant to finish my tax return so I can link the most current tax information to my FAFSA.

Make it rain $$!!

It's not HPSL (which is only a small amount of money and not available at every school I think), but, really, the only reason you should need outside private loans is if you need lots more money. My understanding of it is that you are guaranteed federal loans (Stafford & Grad Plus) up to the cost of attendance as determined by the school no matter what your incoming financial situation.
Here's OSU's presentation which is pretty broad information: http://vet.osu.edu/education/financial-aid-information

And if your tax information this year is similar to last year's, you can go ahead and use last years for FAFSA. (I didn't do this, but it was an option.)

I entered last year's information but I started working in '12 so my financial situation changed a bit. I'm thinking they're gonna want updated info.

My situation is kinda different because I'm considered asset rich but cash poor. Fingers crossed that the FAFSA people will take this into consideration when awarding aid.

Still, I'm quite confused about the whole FA situation and hope to talk to someone at K-State when I'm there next month.

:help: This is how I feel when I think about FA.

Not looking forward to doing all the financial aid stuff. I'm a nontraditional so I have had a decent income for the past several years and also own a house (which I already have someone willing to rent if I do go out of state). I'm worried they are going to look at that and be like we don't need to give you so much you can afford it without us:uhno:

Yeah, my financial info was quite different, so I didn't use last years.

Anyway, the way it was explained to me at Ohio State was you are basically considered to have nothing to your name because of the professional program and will get cost of attendance covered in loans available to you to accept/decline whether you are completely broke or have millions in the bank. At least that's how I understood it in that it's not like undergrad where they determine how much you/your family can afford. That doesn't matter. (And if I'm totally off-base here, I hope someone corrects me.)
I'd also recommend calling the financial aid contact KState gave you. They should be wanting to completely help and make sure you understand all of this.

Definitely need to talk to someone face-to-face. It's (surprisingly) difficult to talk about financial aid over the phone. I prefer some face time when discussing these matters, hence going to the Little Apple next month.

And, I've been reading more about Federal loans on this link:
http://studentaid.ed.gov/types/loans

Depending on the loan you're seeking, you may have an EFC (expected family contribution) or not. I'm far from being a dependent student, so I don't know how my finances will influence my aid. Fingers crossed, just the same.

I'll keep everyone apprised of this FA rigamarole.

I plan on calling KSU next week. They graduate 60+ OOS students each year those students have to have some sort of plan.

Hey does anyone when K-State will start contacting alternates? Have any of my fellow alternates heard any news about being moved up the list into actual spots?

Thanks!

Their plan is (for the most part) very simple I am sure. when you graduate you are a doctor, the average starting salary is around 65,000. You can pay your bills with a STARTING salary like this, will you get rich? Hell no. In addition to this figure auburn during their financial speech said that after 5 years working most of their graduates (no reason for it to be different from any other institution of similar caliber) are making six figures. There is no magic plan really, yes you might get some money but you will basically be $150,000-200,000+ in debt but thats just what it costs. if this is the profession for you then there should be no problem with this, you can pay it back in 10, 20, 30 years and student loans are some of the cheapest loans interest wise you can get which is why they are frequently extended to pay off more expensive loans. This is how I think about it, it just doesnt phase me because there is no other way to become a doctor then to go to vet school which anywhere, even in state will cost over $100,000.

Also im almost positive that Kansas waits until April 16th to start making calls through their waitlist. But if someone knows otherwise please correct me

Hello fellow alternate!! 🙂 I also have the same question, though I vaguely recall someone saying it wasn't until April. Can someone confirm this?

So I e-mailed Janel today and she said they wait for the April 15th hard deadline to get all the deferences confirmed and they start calling on April 16th. 🙂

So I guess it's the waiting game for us! :/

As a current KSU student, I wanted to shed some light on the FA situation. Regardless of how much you made in the past year or the value of your assets, you are guaranteed loans in the amount of the cost of attendance as determined by each institution. This is much different than when applying for undergrad loans where they do consider your income.

The way it works out is you get about 45,000 a year in loans to pay for tuition and then an additional ~18,000 for living expenses, totaling around $65,000 a year in federal loans. Again, this is regardless of your assets or income. I'm a nontrad and had both decent income and assets (and a spouse with an income as well). Luckily they know you won't be keeping up with those once you're in school 🙂 !

I hope that can ease some worries!

Lumphead, if you don't mind my asking, what kind of loans specifically did you secure? And what are the terms?

Lumphead, if you don't mind my asking, what kind of loans specifically did you secure? And what are the terms?

It basically works like this for everyone (more or less):

You get up to 20,000 in the Federal Direct Unsubsidized loans
The remainder of the loans are Federal Grad PLUS loans (the only limit on these is that they can't exceed the cost of attendance as determined by your university)
You may also qualify for the health professionals loan, but the max on that is $1,500 a year.

The interest rate on the federal direct and Grad PLUS loans are around 6.8% i believe and they do accrue interest while attending school. The HPL loans do no accrue interest and have a better interest rate, but again they max out at $1,500 and those are based more on economic need and you must submit parental income info to be considered for those (regardless of age, because I am old and STILL had to).

Now, you may look at the interest and think that private loans would be better. The reason that federal loans are SO much better is the fact that they have lots of repayment plans, loan forgiveness, and all sorts of other little perks. Don't just look at the interest rates.

I know it's silly to worry about this in the midst of FAFSA filing, but I have really fallen in love with K-State and I have an irrational fear of tornadoes. I had a nightmare last night that my dogs were sucked up into a tornado while I was in class (I am aware of how ridiculous I am, and it probably doesn't help that I watched Twister over the weekend 😳). With that being said, are there shelters attached to most apartment buildings/duplexes/housing in general? Also, I'm sure the school has somewhere we can go in bad weather, but if they are predicting a possible tornado, can I bring my dogs to school with me if I don't have a basement to lock them in at home? Sorry to be so weird, but I'm from the mountains and have never had to worry about that kind of thing. I think the biggest reason I'm so scared is because my dad is from Oklahoma and used to tell me terrifying stories about trying to get all the way across the farm in time to get his grandma and get across yet another field to the shelter :scared:

So, this thread has been dead for a while. BUT who knows anything about housing/finding roommates??????

Not pre vet, but a KSU UG. I'd say that housing and apartments are pretty plentiful. Just gotta do some research. As far as finding roommates is concerned, idk. Not useful, I know, but congrats and good luck.

BluePegasus - The school's basement is a tornado shelter, and pets are welcome. I've been here 2 years, we've never had a tornado, but we did have one warning (it ended up not coming near manhattan), but the news gave plenty of warning about the possibility, so from my experience, it has never been an issue.

GrizzlyBear - The school has a website for housing (http://www.vet.k-state.edu/admit/housing/index.htm), and there is usually a facebook page created pretty early by the incoming class, and people post there a lot about housing. Craigslist is also helpful

Thanks tuckervet! I'm glad tornadoes are not a frequent occurrence and that the school has a pet friendly refuge. Someone told me Manhattan was in tornado alley and I got myself all worked up over it for nothing 🙂

One of our buildings did get hit in 2008, but not a frequent thing. Kansas weather is just odd overall.

As an almost-native Kansan, I can tell you that most of the tornado warnings that I remember occurred in the evening. That being said, I commented on that a couple years ago and then we ended up in the basement for two hours at lunch time the next day. "Tornado alley" is kind of a fluid. The area where I currently live actually isn't in tornado alley, but I remember many nights over the years where we spent time in the basement and/or stupidly looking outside for funnel clouds. So being in tornado alley doesn't guarantee you're going to get a bunch of tornadoes, and not being in tornado alley doesn't mean you won't get a fair number of tornadoes. Also, if you're in a place without a basement, a bathroom not on an outside wall is supposed to be the best place to be in the event of a tornado. Specifically, the bathtub. Something about the plumbing?

Kansas weather is just odd overall.
^^^ This. We got over 8 inches of snow on Saturday/Sunday. And we had two 12 inch snows in 2 weeks at the end of February. But we also had a record high 83 degree day last week.

Odd indeed. In '06 (late November?), this area had a warm day with some fairly potent storms which included hail stones and a tornado that cruised through the nearby military base. Woke up the next day to about an inch of snow. 😛

Seriously though, I wouldn't let weather freak you out. There are safety measures you can take if it gets particularly bad in your area, but this is a petty big rarity anyway. I think Kansas has a beautiful variety of weather, save for some potent summer heat/humidity.

i know the letter of alternate status mentioned contacting them if you wanted to remove yourself from the waitlist... but does anyone know if we needed to confirm with them to stay on the waitlist?

Don't think so! I'm in the same boat justbelieve!

whew, that's a relief! i just don't want that to be the reason from possibly getting that phonecall; haha!

also... will our ranking be disclosed after april 16th, maybe????

Hey guys, I was accepted off the wait list last year and wanted to let you know a few things so you're not driving yourselves crazy with worry. 🙂

You don't have to confirm your spot on the wait list. They will assume you still want it unless you contact them otherwise.

Admissions doesn't call anyone until after the deadline (April 15th this year? I'm not sure) and they don't disclose your rank at any time.

I wish you the best of luck! :xf: :luck:

Just got a call from dr. Elmore offering me a spot from the waitlist, which I declined. Hopefully it will go to one of you OOSers. Good luck! :xf:

I'M IN!!! Just got my call from Dean Ellmore and I accepted! Good luck to everyone who is still on the waitlist and I can't wait to meet all my new classmates in the fall!

Thanks! Anybody know of any good rooms for rent? Also, I'll be bringing my horse with me so any tips on horse boarding facilities in the area?!

I want to get in! I want to get in! I want to get in! Ahhhhh.

I got my call!!!! Hello my future classmates!!!

Good luck to everyone on the waiting list! I got myself through this week my telling myself that we're doing this for the animals and they don't care how long it took us!

Congrats Xi! I know you were on a few waitlists, glad you got some good news.

Thank you! I actually just got a call from Mizzou as well and I got I there as well! So I'm going to be making some tough decisions!

For those that recieved a call - did they happen to indicate how many open spots they are trying to fill? I'm getting nervous that my phone isn't ringing...

They are pretty tight with how many are on the wait list and what spot they're on when they're calling. Waitlisters receive calls well into the summer so if you don't get one this week, it's not over yet! As people get called off multiple waitlists, some will turn down their offers and there is still a bit of moving around over the next couple months. :xf: :luck: for you!

Didn't say anything about numbers! But I got called another waitlist, so I will be declining one or the other. Keep your hopes up!!! I know that this SUCKS (Believe me, I know) but you're here for the animals! You will achieve your dream! 🙂
