Kansas c/o 2015 Applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
February 12th! I know it's only a month but sooo long.

I had made plans with friends who live in Lawrence to pick me up at KC airport and drive me to KState. I was going to stay with them in Lawrence on Friday and Saturday, but they called today to say they'll be out of town for the weekend! Now I'm faced with renting a car and staying in Manhattan, which sucks, cost wise ($40 fee added to rental if under 25) However it leaves me with more time to explore. My interview is 3:30 on Saturday, anyone have recommendations for things to do after 5pm on Friday thru Sunday at noon?

Call the car rental agency! I got a wayyyy better deal when I called vs what I saw online. Still got the under 25 charge but it ended up being so cheap that it was no big deal. Also, tell them you won't be leaving Kansas. That made the price lower too! My interview is at 1:00 on Saturday and I have no idea what to do in Manhattan either. I'll probably just drive around to try and get to know the town a bit!

I'm starting to get nervous, too!! 😱

I'm actually flying in Friday night and not leaving until Monday morning, even though my interview isn't until Sunday at 2:30. I'm flying into the Manhattan airport, so flight availability wasn't great, to say the least! I can't believe they only have 4 flights per day through that airport! I just figured it would be safer than driving from Kansas City, as far as weather is concerned (if it happens to snow or something, the last thing a nervous Texas girl needs is to have to learn to drive in the snow under those circumstances!)

Anyway, good luck to everyone! I hope I prepared enough by reading my app and the SDN interview feedback! Not sure what else we can do. Anyone else staying in the Parkwood Inn block of rooms?

Can you tell me who you rented with? The quote for the car was $13 a day, I'm not sure if they go lower than that. Problem was, the $40 fee plus taxes was a total of $108. That is a significant expense out of pocket for me. Also, I'm flying i to MCI - which is in MO, so I can't pull the "Not leaving KS" card.

I rented with Enterprise. I think it was a $20 fee per day for the under 25 thing. Maybe try telling them you're going for a professional interview? I didn't have to do that but some people said on here that that works sometimes. Also, I believe it was as long as you're travelling within KS, MO and another state, maybe IA. Basically, the lower price was for staying within the "tri-state" area. But the $13/day sounds pretty ridiculously cheap! Your problem is just the under 25 thing. For picking up in Manhattan, KS on Friday and dropping off on Sunday I rented a car for a total of $67.20. Call them and try to argue the price!!

I am trying to figure out if I should fly into Kansas City or Manhattan - how good is the road inbetween the two cities? I'm just worried about a snow storm or something. Anybody know?

I was worried that Manhattan would be subject to more bad weather delays or closures, so I decided to fly into KC this Friday morning. The flight was also about $100 cheaper and the car rental was cheaper also. It's mostly interstate driving from there.

I-70 is an interstate highway, two lanes on either side, speed limit 70mph, two hours in good conditions. However, in snowstorms they don't really clear it very well--especially since there's such a long gap between many of the exits. 😱The wind just keeps blowing the snow back over the road and there's not enough traffic to keep the pavement wet.

In my 3.5 years here, I've had to unexpectedly stay the night in a KC hotel due to icy conditions on I-70. Both times there were reports of pile-ups of 15+ cars...

The problem is that if I-70 sucks, it's likely that Manhattan airport's runway is also going to suck. Perhaps not if the storm is localized closer to KC--that's certainly possible. Kind of a crapshoot either way.

One of the many reasons I can't wait to leave Kansas...!

Is Kansas still doing OOS interviews? I thought they had told me that we would hear the first few weeks in January.

last set of interviews is Jan 22-23 looks like. I heard somewhere that we'd hear from them around February 12th but I don't even know where I read that! 😳

I'm still so excited that I got an interview. I am so way over excited about this!!

So, I literally just interviewed at 330! I was extremely nervous and I think it showed a few times...but overall I felt prepared and felt that I answered everything well. It wasnt all "laughs" like so many on here said...at times I found it very hard to read them!! And my interview lasted only about 20 to 25 minutes...didnt go over like some said on here...so im a little worried :/ anyone elses interview experience like this?

I didn't apply at Kansas but this is how my interview at Ohio State went in December. I was terrified and did a really bad job of hiding that. I couldn't read my interviewers, the interview was NOT "fun," and it only lasted about 25 minutes. 6 days later, I was accepted =) So try not to beat yourself up over it and don't worry yourself sick. Pat yourself on the back because you did it!

I'm flying into Manhattan airport the day before my interview and I'm kinda worried there might be flight delays especially with the weather lately. Does anyone know if flight delays to Manhattan occur often? Or if snow storms are common in Jan? I'm considering changing my flight to a day earlier... any suggestions?

I interviewed at 3. Were you in with the one guy and two women? They were really hard to read. I thought I answered them OK, but afterward I realized I had let them intimidate me midway through and had gotten meeker and quieter progressively after that. Elliegirl- I wish we were all so lucky to hear so soon! First week of Feb is torture.

I know... TORTURE!!!!

I thought my interview went well, but right now I'm playing the mind game "they're interviewing more OOS's because they weren't happy with the first group"

Don't worry, they said at the pizza thing tonight that they finish the interviews, then rank everyone based on GPA/GRE, experience and interview score and offer to the top ranked on down. Then all with qualifying scores go on waitlist. I think the reason they're interviewing more is that people like Pendantworld are withdrawing because they got in to IS or dream schools.

So I should be happy that more people are interviewing, because each progressive interview group (pulled from "viable applicant" list) has a lower score (-interview)?

Just trying to wrap my brain around things.

Just got a call from American Airlines! My flight out of Manhattan for tomorrow at 7:40am is cancelled and rescheduled for 4:40pm. What am I going to do for 9 extra hours?? And why is it cancelled?? There's no snow!!!!!!!

My interview went well today though. I had a man and two women on the 3rd floor. The guy was totally awesome, he asked almost all of the questions. One of the women was pretty friendly too but the other woman was not very friendly. She didn't laugh at all or even really smile. But hopefully she's just one of those stoic people! When I got the call tonight from American Airlines cancelling my flight I was like "omg could it be Kansas calling me like they do for Ohio??" yeah...definitely not.

Here's to hoping that the flight tomorrow afternoon doesn't get cancelled. And good luck to all of those interviewing tomorrow!

So far this winter it hasn't really snowed and we've only gotten a little bit of ice once. However, with weather being as unpredictable as it is, we are getting our first real snow storm (4-8 inches) starting tomorrow and going until Tuesday. Manhattan Airport only flies planes owned by American Airlines and AA are slightly known for delaying flights due to weather.

I interviewed at four schools last year (Ohio State, Kansas State, Mississippi State, and Iowa State). Of the four, K-State was by far my favorite and the best interview experience. The interviews are basically done to make sure you are who you claim to be and to make sure you are a real person. Nearly all my interview questions came directly off my personal statement. Everyone that I interacted with while I was out for my interview was extremely friendly and tried to make the interview experience as nice as they could.

Also, I interviewed the last weekend (Jan 31) they preformed OOS interviews. I was notified that I was accepted to the c/o 2014 less than 2 weeks later.

If anyone has any questions feel free to ask me. (I'm originally from Ohio and I'm living here in Manhattan with my boyfriend)

Good luck to everyone!

Thanks, I hope it is as painless as you make it sound.

I'm curious about your thoughts on OSU v. Kansas. Did you get into Ohio?

I liked Ohio State as a school and they have a really good program. I was forewarned from many people that OSU CVM has a bit of a stuck up nose. Being from Ohio (and being an OSU fan) I wasn't shocked. Sure enough, my interview there was by far the most nerve racking. It felt like my interviewers were drilling me. Their questions came from current events, my application, and then some about their program. I didn't get an overly welcoming feeling from them. I ended up being rejected. In the end, I'm glad that happened since that allowed me to have no second feelings about going OOS instead of staying in state.

Also, I was on the waitlist at Iowa State and Mississippi State and was accepted to Kansas State.

Hey hwolfe, I think I had the same interviewers you did. They were on the first floor? Two professors and one local veterinarian. I was a little surprised bc when I walked out it had only been 25 minutes as well. This was my first interview ever, and I feel like I reminded myself to hit very important points, but I did lose my words a few times, and I was asked questions out of my realm of experience. Overall, I think it went quite well, but truthfully, I am not a interviewer-mind-reader 🙂

Do you have anymore interviews?

EllieGirl89: thank you, that makes me feel a lot better!!!

fromthebox: YES! I think we had the same people. I tried to remain as solid as possible through the interview, which was a little hard because their lack of emotion made me feel less confident :/ Where are you from??

SnoopynCharlie: Mine was on the 3rd floor, two women and one man. It was my first one too! Nervewracking, right?! They didn't ask me any questions about anything outside of my experience...I guess it's just whatever they feel like asking at that moment?? I interview at Western at the end of the month :/ How about you?

I wasn't expecting anything for another month but I got my acceptance letter today in the mail!!! I didn't even receive anything in my email!

SO excited. I'm officially going to vet school this fall!

:soexcited:

Currently Santa Barbara, CA. If you were the 3:30 interview, when I came out of mine I said something about them being nice and not scary. I kinda lied. I was so glad to be done and not scrutinized. When I got back to my hotel and thought it over I was like "oh crap, that could have gone so much better. It wasn't bad, but why didn't I say X?"

Edit: Oh yeah, CONGRATS HawkeyeVet! Does that mean the rest of us OOSers should start freaking out?

OK, freaking out has begun. I am seeing acceptances pop up for K-State from the first interview group, and G2D said they told them it wouldn't be 'til February as well. WTH Kansas? This means that they had to send those snail-mail acceptances PRIOR to seeing those of us who interviewed this last weekend.

I would put a more positive slant on it... decisions were made on the first group without influence from the second group... I can't quite figure out how to word that, but what I am trying to say is that they aren't accepting people because they didn't like the second group... they hadn't even met you yet!

I would think of it more along the lines of if they are interviewing you, they already like you and want to accept you and just want to make sure you are a reasonable person. It seems like at least several schools accept people in waves after interviews, with no prejudice against the later interviewees. So I don't think you should freak out! :xf::xf::xf: for everyone waiting!

That's a toughie, Hawkeye: in-state or KSU. What are you thinking?

Well, I don't want to say, because I haven't been accepted to ISU yet, but I think it might actually be a tough decision... OOS at KSU is only like $5000 or so more expensive each year than IS at ISU, so that doesn't play as much of a factor as I used to think. There are a lot of pros and cons I'll have to weigh out if I get accepted to both so we'll have to see!!!

Ooooh... I thought you were but now I read that it says "hopeful!" under your name. oops!

Sorry, no negative slant intended, totally cool with them accepting people, 'cause y'all rock. I had JUST put all of it out of my mind, saying to myself that I don't have to re-play my interview or worry until Feb. Now it could be any time until then. I am more confused than anything, with them saying so clearly and multiple times that acceptances go out in Feb...

If only this entire application process made sense....

When I got back to my hotel and thought it over I was like "oh crap, that could have gone so much better. It wasn't bad, but why didn't I say X?"

I did the EXACT same thing! I just had to tell myself to stop thinking about it, and try to relax and watch some TV.

I just copied this from the weather channel report for the Manhattan area:

* WIND CHILL VALUES WILL FALL INTO THE -15 TO -20 DEGREE RANGE TONIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY MORNING.
* IMPACTS... EXPOSED SKIN CAN SUFFER FROM FROSTBITE IN A VERY SHORT TIME AND CAN LEAD TO HYPOTHERMIA.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
BE SURE TO WEAR LAYERED CLOTHING... A HAT... AND GLOVES TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM THE DANGERS OF FROSTBITE. MAKE SURE OUTDOOR PETS HAVE WARM DRY SHELTER... AND FRESH UNFROZEN WATER.

Awesome. What am I thinking? It is 40 degrees here in CA and my dog is so cold (she's skinny and has very little hair) she doesn't want to go outside to potty. Can 40# dogs use those indoor fake grass patches?

It's very cold! Bring warm clothes, and change out of your suit for the party (if you hadn't planned on doing that already). Have gloves and a hat with you in your car, for sure.

However, the roads should be clear unless some new weather pops up.

My thin skinned rat terrier has two coats on right now INSIDE my house! She shivers any other way.

My chihuahua shivers if it get's below 70. Yes, I said 70. I took her up to Tahoe this year and I'm pretty sure she thought I was trying to kill her. If things go well at KSU interviews, I'm going to have to find some decent winter wear for the four footed pooch!

Now the horse - she'll be happy as a clam in the snow...her winter coat can be likened to a polar bear!

It is currently 8 degrees.... yes, 8 and the high was 22 ysterday. I didn't even want to get out and play in the snow!

I just realized that because I am renting a car I don't have to stay at one of the hotels that the shuttle goes to. I'm hoping to find a less expensive room.

Are there any hotels/motels you guys would recommend staying away from?

I stayed at the Motel 6 for 37.99 a night. Not your fanciest hotel, but they've always done right by me and are right across from the HyVee and restaurants and 2.4 miles from the school. I would recommend them as the cheapest option, and they have great showers with plenty of hot water and good heaters in the rooms.

Perfect! Thanks.

Do we need to worry about bed bugs?
