Hello!

I am interviewing in January for a residency spot here and was wondering if anyone has already interviewed here? If so, what is the nature of the interview like? Do they ask only resume based questions or actual medicine (EKG/Patient Therapy) questions as well?

Unfortunately this is only my second interview and my New Jersey interview did not go too well (too many EKG questions) My wife is working in Wichita as well and I would sincerely appreciate any feedback!

Good luck to all!

I have not been asked any medical questions during any of my interviews. They are mostly relaxed and laidback.

You got asked to interpret EKGs?

Yea out of 10 or so interviews all of mine have been really laid back. I had one medical question in an interview and needless to say i will not be ranking that program.

This is not at all uncommon in IMG-heavy programs.

Any experience with this interview, anyone? Are they laid back as well or more question based?

This is my beacon of hope. I will really appreciate the help guys! Any good CURRENT resource you guys recommend to prepare? Thank you!

I interviewed there late November, I can tell you for sure that I didn't have medical related Qs in my all 5 interviews that day. The only Q I was asked that was clinically relevant was "what interesting experience did you have in your IM clerkship?" that was asked by a chief resident. The entire interview was smooth and laid back. The PD might ask you couple questions related to your performance in med school. I have been in some intimidating interviews but I can give my ten cents that KU Wichita is not one of them. You won't be asked to read EKG. What you have to do is to go to that social meeting before the interview day and try to social as much as you can with faculty staff because some of them they're going to interview you the next day. From my experience I met the PD on that social thing and on my interview day it was like we've talked about this already, so he didn't have to introduce himself to me again in formal way and neither did I. KU Wichita is IMG friendly program and I think about 70% are IMG compared to KU Kansas city, which is heavily DO Graduates turf. PCs are nice and helpful. Just relax and have fun with them.

Wow, thank you soo much!!! Definitely grateful to you for your help! My interview is on a Monday so unfortunately there is no prior evening event on Sunday so can't have an informal introduction to the PD. What do you think they would ask someone out of med school for a while? I graduated a while ago (>3 year) and that is the only negative part of my application unfortunately. I am an IMG and since my wife is in the same city so I am seriously hoping for this. Is there anything you would recommend specifically for this? I am running out of resources.

Thanks again, ger8! I am very thankful!

Since your wife is in Wichita, I strongly encourage you to let them know about it. This will show your attachment to Wichita because they definitely want to train someone who has potential to stay in Kansas and work there. Forget about being IMG and graduating longtime ago, If that was an issue for this program you would have not gotten interview invite. Since you know this is the only problem for your application, don’t volunteer to bring it up. Try to have many questions to ask them, remember you can always repeat the same Qs to all of them. Just nail down your attachment to Wichita Ks through your wife that's a big plus in your application than anything else, believe me it will be a strong asset when the Ranking start in Feb. Don't let your application weaknesses take control of your interviews, by this time around you have already solid answers on weak sides of your application and don't let those weak sides of your application being the center pieces of your interviews. Just have preemptive questions handy to ask them to diffuse any tension in the mix of interviews. I can guarantee you'll have a smooth interview because the PD, PCs and people in Wichita IM program are nice and friendly than IM program at KC. Good luck on your interview.
