LECOM - Bradenton Discussion thread 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
IMO, it's definitely a good idea to do as much research and get as many opinions as you can about the schools you're interested in; however, it's also important to try to approach each interview with an open mind and really form your own opinion...as scpod said, the schools that sounded good on paper/SDN may not click for you in reality, and vice versa.

LECOM-Bradenton was my 8th choice before interviewing...but after learning about PBL, I realized I could really see myself thriving there. In contrast, my "number one" school just left me feeling kind of bland. Definitely listen to your intuition in this process.
I appreciate your sincere opinion on this. Genuinely, guys, I may not have a choice! If I don't get above a 26 on the 'CAT, they won't even look at me anyway at LECOM Bradenton, as lowest MCAT accepted there is a 26. Right now I'm looking at between a 25 and 30 on my home tests but I have bombed a couple and the test is one week away.
I really, really regret getting in so late this year. I waited until I had my DO letter when I could have been much more efficient in this process...live and learn!

^^dont worry about the MCAT, on my practice tests I NEVER scored above an 18.. no joke. On the test, I pulled a 26.. I have NO idea how that happened.

Coming off my spazz, it's nice to have this forum to vent. I'm so hopeful for the nine schools I've applied to, that one, just ONE, will accept me for August. I'm a dork for not doing all this sooner!
Back to :spam: -ville, that unsettled queasy feeling in stomach :barf:from studying OPTICS AND WAVES all morning, and more scoring/testing. Fun Fun.
Thanks for the "don't worry." I hope my head doesn't explode before Saturday.:boom:

^good luck!! 🙂 Really, I think you will be fine!! 😀

...where the hell did you hear that!? I can tell you that that statment is 100% NOT true.

On another note:
I'm awfully sorry if I caused a stir on here, or made anything think negitively about LECOM Bradenton. I just couldn't see myself being really happy there, this should NOT in ANY way dissuade anyone else from going to the school or from giving it a serious look.

In other news: I hope you rocked the MCAT

I hope you're right. The Princeton Review online crack-CBT folks (not really an official source of info) told me their new Princeton Review assessment of all schools reports that for last year, LECOM Bradenton only accepted around 4% of applicants & accepted MCAT 26 or over as a general rule, which makes them one of the top "choosiest" medical schools, allo or osteo, in the nation. Could be complete :bullcrap: I don't have a copy of that report, btw.

I don't think being choosy is necessarily a negative, either.
Thanks for the "rockin the MCAT" -- I take it this coming Saturday. I'll be glad to be finished with the beating of the dead horse by then. :beat:

yeah, i really doubt that's true. i don't think LECOM-B is established enough to accept only 4% of the applicants. It's not the mayo clinic, it's a branch of a little more established osteopathic school.

From the LECOM website:

"Successful medical college candidates typically have both science and overall grade point averages of 3.3 or above and a mean MCAT score of 24 for medical college applicants."

Granted this doesn't specify their averages, but I really don't think their cutoff is at a 26. I got a 28 and received an interview invite the SECOND they got my application and an acceptance a week after my interview. Not great evidence, but I don't think a 26 is their cutoff...more likely a 22 or so this year, if I had to guess.

Admissions
Admissions to Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine is extremely competitive.[2] The Princeton Review classifies its selectivity as "most competitive." For the class of 2010, Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine matriculated less than 4% of those who applied, placing it as one of the most selective institutions in the world.[3] The median MCAT score for admitted students is well above the national average, while the median GPA falls well into the competitive category. Applicants are strongly encouraged to have diverse academic backgrounds as well strong character and leadership. The average age of matriculation is 25.:scared: True? Can Wikipedia be trusted on this? I don't know much about the validity of Wikipedia stuff.

Digitalnoiz: All this tells me is that you must have a diverse academic background and you must have strong character and leadership skills. This school obviously rocks!

Whatever. US News says the LECOM acceptance rate for 2006 is 10%. There's no acceptance data specific to Bradenton, anywhere, afaik.

Bradenton is a great location, and $25k is cheap. That's reason enough for the school to get a huge number of apps, and 150/huge is tiny.

Everybody panics, unproductively, about the acceptance stats and average academic numbers. Really, it's more suited to the 40yo virgin forum. I suggest you focus on killing the MCAT and put this kind of distraction aside.

BTW, USNews 2006 LECOM entry says "Successful candidates have GPAs of 3. 3 or higher and MCATs of 24 or higher"

Best of luck to you.

Thanks! I certainly have a diverse background...

I wonder if TPR was combining the two LECOMs into one. I would say the 25yo age is about right, judging by my PBL group I was in. Maybe a touch higher. I'll be 30 when school starts in the fall 😎

I would say that if someone wants to be really competitive for any school shoot for a 30+. That's what I did, and although I fell a bit short (28), I've gotten a bunch of interviews (although I turned down all of my DO interviews since getting into LECOM-B)

Perhaps some of my other class of 2012-ers can post their scores? If you don't want to post 'em, then PM me or facebook me and I'll post them for you (with no names obviously) so people can get some idea of what's goin' on this year.

Anyone?

There are 8 LECOM-B acceptances on mdapplicants.com. Low MCAT is 24. GPA's are all well above 3.0.

Thanks Dr. Midlife. Love the avatar!
Back to acid hydrides..........😴😴

At my interview on the 16th.. they said at that point they had received 900 applications.. and were expecting about 1900 total.. last year they got 1600.. im not sure if that makes any difference to the above stats.. I'm not about to try.. but... if I am trying, I just used the calculator and say 150 matriculants (not acceptances) / 1600 apps is 9.4%

The average MCAT score has risen steadily and considerably over the last few years. They really almost had to take whoever they could get for the first class, but since that time things have gotten to where they can be pretty picky. PBL appeals to a different type of student and they've done a lot of research on what type of student is succesful in PBL. They have turned people down for interviews this year that have 28 and 29 MCATs because they didn't fit the student profile they are looking for.

not to doubt anyone here, but what you said above is universal across the board for all medical schools, osteopathic and allopathic.

I got a 26Q and was accepted. I guess that may not help break the notion that they only look at 26+, but I also doubt this is true.

so I see you need a pretty decent MCAT to get accepted at Bradenton, but what about GPA? as you can see in my mdapps, my GPA is less than stellar, but over the past semester I've done exponentially better (ever since I realized how badly I want med school etc)....still waiting on an interview invite. Apparently my file is under review this week :luck:

My numbers and ECs are about the same, and I got an interview. Just be patient. Save the worry for post-interview. 🙂

cool. Thanks for the encouragement. Maybe i'll see you there next year hehe

Its a little more complicated than that. They look at more than just GPA and MCAT. For MCAT, they look more closely at the BS section than others because of data indicating higher step one scores for higher BS scores. They look at Verbal the least. For GPA, they also tend to look at your undergrad institution. They have colleges grouped into quartiles so that your GPA is compared based on where you went. For instance, a 3.3 in a top quartile college might look better than a 3.8 at a bottom quartile college. So, there just isn't a simple answer.

NICE! are most DO schools like this?

NICE! are most DO schools like this?

I'd say no, based on my 2 pre-interview rejections so far. And one DO school I interviewed at basically backed up a dumptruck of dog poo onto me during "file review" for having transcript indiscretions. Not really, but that's how I felt coming out.

But I'd also say yes, based on my getting 5 DO interviews out of 11 apps, and only 1 MD interview out of 34 apps. (No post-interview rejections, yet.)

This part sucks. Meaning: the part where you only exist on paper, and people you've never met are deciding whether you're worthy or not. American Idol is nicer - at least you get to sing.

Just curious... how is 'Bradenton' pronounced? I rather not sound like a *****.

American Idol is nicer - at least you get to sing.

Not exactly. Chris Daughtry is an old buddy of mine and it's a LOT of luck involved there. When you go the stadium for the tryouts they basically have 2 groups of tables. One group of tables rejects EVERYONE that sings for them, no matter how good they are.

If you go to those tables, you lose. That's how they narrow those stadiums full of people down to the 100 or so in each city that sing for the judges at the hotels, like we see on TV.

Then they send another hundred+ to "Hollywood" week where you have to dance and sing more, and they cut it down the 24 that we see on TV when the show gets really rolling.

I'll take my med school odds any day.

 Actually that sounds EXACTLY like my med school odds! It's completely arbitrary which schools have been giving me love vs. not so much.

Ha! I know! The med school odds are still better though. Way less people apply to med school than try out for Idol. 43,000 students fighting for roughly 22,000 spots. That's about a 50/50 chance!!!

Idol picks 20 out of a few million auditionees. The odds are astronomical...even if you're amazing.

ps. DrMidLife, I sat next to you on interview day..

I sorta figured. This is going to be a painfully long week, isn't it? Letters might come Saturday? Aaaauuuuugggghhh.

congrats. I was about to tell u to call them because thats what i did. The snow here today is really making me lean towards going there now. what do you think?

Thank you everybody!!!! LMAO at the Geico comment!!! Ive decided Im going to withdrawl from Erie to take Bradenton's acceptance! I thought about it.. and I get SAD (seasonal affective disorder) and I talked to my parents about it and they also think that Floridas climate would be so much better than Pennsylvania for me, to which I definitley agree!! I am so thrilled!! I can't wait!! I am also withdrawing from Touro Hendersons invite but Im still going to interview at AZCOM, after that we will see!

Wow, congrats Chicago! Go be smug & happy in Hong Kong!!!

^^why don't you give them a call?? ask for JUNE Flaim.
