Anybody with 411 on houses for rent? There appear to be plenty of townhouses, but the stairs might not be ideal for little ones.

Good point. I'm looking at townhouses right now, but I'm not crazy about my current two story lifestyle. A three story townhouse is even less appealing! I checked out www.rentalguideapartments.com under Erie and got a link for I believe it was Baldwin Brothers real state. They had a lot of one story houses for rent. I think their website is www.baldwinbrothers.com. There was also a development on there (www.rentalguideapartments.com) that was made up of single story houses I think. I can't recall the name of it. Just do a search and it should be there. I'm close enough to Erie I am also going to get a newspaper and go up there and look into individuals with houses to rent as opposed to these larger developments.

Glad to see another LECOMer with little ones! How old are yours? Mine will be 3 years old and 18 months old when classes start. Both boys.

Does anyone know if they finished building those apartments with the underground tunnel to LECOM? Just curious.

For the most part, that has not been built or even under consideration from what I understand.

I have two boys. One will be 3 in April the other will be 10 months old by the start of school. Thanks for the info, I'll check it out.

I am having trouble finding a house/townhouse to rent that allows big dogs. I've found up to 45 pounds (baldwin brothers) but nothing more than that....Can anyone help 🙁

MissVanDerMom, that avatar is so much better than Bee Arthur. I liked golden girls as much as the next person, but staring at her everytime I posted was another. Your child is a great choice and much easier to look at.🙂

Hey, does anyone know anything about book lists, vacation schedules what books don't necessarilly have to be bought? ($2000 on books😱 )

As far as housing for rent, there are a bunch of things listed on www.goerie.com hope that helps!!

you can find an official book list on the LECOM website in the Bookstore area (they have a different one for each pathway), but they say you don't need to buy most of them. The woman who runs the bookstore is supposed to be able to tell you which ones you need but maybe some current LECOM students will reply to your post and let us know.

Oh I myself could never get tired of gazing at Bea Arthur! But I do like looking at my cuties instead. This particular baby of mine has inherited his mother's permanent frown. I like to call this picture "the baby santa forgot".

I hope they have some orientation functions that my kids can attend. They're much more social than me. And more popular!

Hey everyone... does anyone know when the White Coat ceremony is? My parents want to know b/c they want to attend and feel all proud😳

I heard that LECOM has it in January? I dunno if that's true... I couldn't find it when I googled it.

Ok...
On books Some people buy them, some people don't. You can e-mail Sarah, the bookstore lady, and ask her to send you a copy once it comes out. I think that I got it about three weeks before school, went on Amazon, and bought most of the books used relatively cheap. Another option is buying them from your upperclassmen. The bookstore sells them at Amazon prices, minus the shipping and handling, so if its a new edition and there aren't any used ones around, then your best bet may be buying them there.

LDPSometimes profs tell us on thier first day of lecture that you will need the book and sometimes thier right and soemtimes thier wrong. Radiology book - waste of time. Anatomy book - helpful. So, it really depends on the topic as well as your background in the subject.
I'd ask a current MS1 or future MS2 when you guys get here what books to buy. Its really on a case by case basis. It also has a lot to do with personal preference. I know that as an LDPer I am rare, but I buy and read the books because I like reading them. I know that a majority of my classmates do not buy the books. A lot of people just use thier computers with notes written on power point slides. Some use printed notes from the noteservice with scribed notes (also from the noteservice).

PBL I hear that most of these guys buy the books, but if you want specifics once the book list comes out for you guys, then just ask. You will also be assigned "bigs" like a big sister or brother when you come here if you want to and you can ask them, or seek me out and I can introduce you to a few people in your pathway.

ISP Word through the grapevine is that they buy all the books. Ask Dr. Mom what the ISPers that I hooked her up with have to say on that.

On orientation activities There are a bunch of fun things to do once school is starting. They will mail you all the info. Also, on our myspace group we all made plans to go out and hang out prior to classes were starting as we all moved in. There are tons of parks around here that you guys can have play dates at, so no worries there.

On White coat Our white coat ceremony is in mid April, but we hate having it that late, so your guys mgiht be earlier. I am under the impression that the prior class plans it, so I guess we do yours. The current MS2s was super bowl weekend and it snowed like crazy, which is why they moved ours back. They'll give you plenty of notice about it, you might even find out orientation week.

Have a great week! As always, PM me with questions.

Is flying into Erie advised?
If not Erie, what would be the next major airport recommended?

I would go with Cleveland International. Then you can just hop on I-90 E into Erie. Maybe an hour and a half drive.

Brookwood Village and Belle Village both allow big dogs. They are kind far from school (15 minutes). I live in Belle Village and really like it. You should be able to find it at http://www.rentalguideerie.com. Our landlord's name is Julie - she's great!

Cleveland and Buffalo are both about 1 hr. 30 mins. away, so either of them work wonders. Also Pittsburgh is about 2 hrs. Take your pick!

For those of you with that have kids, are married, or have significant others, there is a club on campus - SASN (Student Auxiliary Support Network) that holds functions every now and then for families - spouses, kids, moms, dads, whoever! I'm sure you'll hear more about it during orientation week. PM me with any questions (my girlfriend is the President for next near!).

If anyone is interested/looking for housing in Erie. Feel free to check out the link below or PM me for more information if needed. Thanks.

or

It's a 10 minute drive to LECOM, on the south side of 38th street (so very safe and quiet), and has been completely updated. Also comes with lots of medical books that I don't want to move with.....(almost all of the 1st-2nd books needed). I was PBL so I bought all of them.

Hey everyone- does anyone have info on Carriage Hill townhouses? I am looking either there or Lakeview at this point, but Carriage Hill actually allows small animals so I wouldn't have to smuggle in my cat😉

By chance, do any of you guys study Brazilian Jiu Jitsu? I am looking for a training partner.

FYI Lakeview evicts people if they find pets. I know of one person that was evicted earlier this year for having pets at another no pets allowed apartment complex. So, if it says no pets, then be aware that they will evict you and you don't have time for that.

haha, I know, I was just kidding around, I probably wouldn't be able to prepare well for exams living in a cardboard box behind campus😛

I just recently got accepted to LECOM to..
I'm from Cincinnati and I am in the process of figuring out exactly what I am going to do about finding appartments and roommates and such..
anybody looking for a roommate let me know🙄

I'm looking at a couple Palermo places. Does anyone know Joe Palermo Realty is okay? They have some townhouses near a park and a school I am looking at. They allow pets but charge a fee. They said fish and turtles don't count but my bunnies (who live in a cage and therefor couldn't do any damage) probably would since they "produce a smell". haha. They really don't, but apparently that's the public perception of bunnies. I thought it was a weird thin for the guy to say.

Oh, and I got a call from the head of the PCSP today inviting me to interview! So I'll be in Erie April 25. Anyone else?😕 I'm so psyched!

How long does it take to get finanical aid/housing information after receiving the acceptance letter?

How long does it take to get finanical aid/housing information after receiving the acceptance letter?

financial aid info should come quickly but i think we're all still waiting on housing. then main thing with financial aid at this point is to just get your FAFSA filed. you should get the packet soon where it tells you the exact COA amount etc.

Financial aid, you get the papers pretty quickly, you can fill out the fafsa online though without any paperwork from LECOM. I was told they'd mail out the financial aid awards in late April or May.

Housing, should come some time soon I think, but people have said don't wait to you get it to look or most of the good places will be gone. A friend of mine who is a current student said to try to avoid Granada Apartments. Apparently they are cheap, but in a somewhat dangerous area and the walls are really thin.

Does anyone know when the deadline is for turning in our fafsa?

I forgot to add a couple other questions to my previous posts.
1. Does anyone know the exact numbers for the way students are given subsidized vs. Unsub'd graduate loans?
2. When will we be given access to the notes and lectures on the web?
3. Is the YMCA on Cherry St. worth joining? We will be living only a couple blocks away, and based on the workout facility in the school I need to find somewhere else to go:laugh: .

I've heard that the YMCA is pretty good, I know our tour guide has a membership there and she liked it. We looked at a couple houses on Cherry Street too.

You should complete the fafsa asap- you can do it online, it only takes about 35-45 minutes. But you do need to apply for a pin to initiate it all and that takes 2-3 days. As far as the subsidized vs unsubsidized...somewhat complicated and I don't know how well I can explain it. Basically you fill out the fafsa, they get back to you with an estimated amount that you should pay (calm down, it's not that bad!) basically what this is used for is to determine how much subsidized money you are eligible for. As long as the amount that is determined to pay is lesser than the total cost of LECOM ($48,000ish) by more than $8,500, you willl qualify for the total $8,500 subsidized amount. Apparently $8,500 is the max of subsidized loan money you can receive. Hopefully that makes sense....Also, you are not actually responsible to pay what the fafsa says you should, so don't worry!

In April or May, LECOM will send us our financial aid awards via email. At that time, we can accept, reject or reduce it. You respond to LECOM and then there is an email link set up so that we can apply for loans.

1.
LECOM will send them out before school starts. They will post the tuition info on the web on their page too once that's worked out so you can do a budget. For now you can just use last years numbers.

2.
I don't think that we had access to the lectures on the web until classes, but I'm not sure if that's because we just didn't try or our accounts weren't up yet. You don't need to do anything to get a leg up on school before it starts, but if you are going to do it anyway, then look over an anatomy text because you will be learning all of the muscles and knowing them before you see them in your cadaver can help. But honestly, you don't have to do anything. The profs lay out pretty well what you need to know and teach it in such a way that it’s easy to pick up.

3.
I know that I am a gym rat, so I have continued to work out daily despite school. I also know that some of my friends have not. When you first come to Erie you can get a free trial (a couple of weeks or a month) at a couple of the local gyms, so if you're not sure if you fit into the dedicated and will be going to the gym regardless of school, or maybe I'll be giving it up categories, then you can abuse those free trial periods at a variety of places (although the Y doesn't have one) first. The Y does have free tours, so just stop by once you move in and check it out.
Make sure that your budget allows a gym, I know a couple people who dropped or changed gyms because they could no longer afford the one they originally joined. The school gym is free and is ok; I would also recommend checking it out first to see if it meets your needs. Also, presquile has all the area you need to do some great outdoor running, and there are tons of parks and stuff if you are into that.

I'm sure we will be able to use it...However, I don't think it opens until 09/08!!!😡

They told us there will be a student membership available and the place is still a dirt hole, so they said it won't be open till about when you suggested. They have plans for it that I'm sure will be around when you guys are in school.

Side note. I have a power point file on apartments (sorry, not much on house type info) from last year when I was looking for a place. If anyone wants it, then PM me your e-mail and I will send it to you. Yes, I am a huge dork. Like a really big one. Seriously.

Although I have been accepted to the class of 2011, I looked at the LECOM website and it says to have 8 semester hours of organic and inorganic chemistry including 2 semester hours of lab in each, I have 8 semester hours of both inorganic and organic but only 1 semester hour of lab in each not the 2 that they want, would they take away my acceptance for this, anybody else in this situation?

Hi guys,

Congratulations on your acceptance to the wonderful world of LECOM!

As the new webmaster for the lecom sga website, I would like to encourage all incoming MS1's to visit the site and check it out.

www.lecomsga.com

During orientation, you will be given a lecom e-mail addy and, with that, you can sign up for an account on the website.

With an account, you can then set up a personal page a la facebook/myspace and then proceed to chat on the forums/post news, etc.

Our eventual goal for the website is to make it a one stop hub for all things LECOM.

... It's still sort of a work in progress...

If you have any questions about the website or about school in general, feel free to email me at [email protected].

Thanks!

unsolicitated LDP advice: buy a wacom, buy a cheapy microphone, get messer (google it) and record the lectures directly to mp3. Use windows media player to listen to your lectures at about double speed. Study at home (pants optional).

We are about to put an offer in on a house!! I'm so excited!!

For any current students: My boyfriend is moving with me and needs to take some classes at a CC. What is the closest one/one that most people use? We will be living close to LECOM. Thanks 🙂

when I applied they informed me I was missing a credit of inorganic chem when they emailed me to acknowledge my application. I had to email them and tell them when I'd be taking it. and then I think they reminded me a second time. If they haven't told you at this point, I think youre okay. They accepted me CHEM 050 for inroganic credit even though it's not even a 100 level, so maybe they're not too harsh on chem requirements.

This isn't directly to LECOM, but the other schools I applied to let me know if the credits I had didn't fit their requirements, I would have assumed LECOM would have said something...

I talked to Amy today and was told that it is fine as long as I took a lab associated with each although they were 1 credit each and fulfilled the 8 semester hour requirement for each which I did. So I was worried for a second but now I'm back to being happy 🙂 .

Hey CptStarbuck are you going to LECOM-Erie? I thought you were deciding OUCOM and MSUCOM.

Can anyone recommend a realtor? I'm renting a house but was hoping a realtor might help me in the search...

Can anyone explain in what way the school helps you find a roommate because so far they havn't sent me any info about it yet and im starting to wonder...

Per the form you send back with matriculation fee, they will compile a list with your preferences (if you listed any) and mail it to everyone who turned in the form. My guess if you start emailing/calling... Anyone else?

Yea I will be looking for roomates also

Can anyone explain in what way the school helps you find a roommate because so far they havn't sent me any info about it yet and im starting to wonder...

They will send you a list with everyone that wants a roomate and whatever preferences that you put on it, plus where the person is from. If you are looking to live in one of the townhouse communities, get your name on the waitlist now and then find a roomate who wants to live with you. Or, a novel idea, you could always find a roomate on here. My friends that used the waitlist mostly live in houses that they rented because most of the apartments were taken (same price area, no big deal, just your pref). I heard one complaint that by the time the list came out people had already found places. I know that I got two e-mails from it and that was it, but I already had a place of my own by then. Call the school if you want to know when you will have it. It goes out with the housing stuff I think.

Thanks to everyone who PMed me about realtors! I think I'm going to go up to Erie in a couple weeks to look at places. Maybe I'll try to hit the LECOM bookstore too to get my kids some little LECOM tshirts. That could be cute.

Tomorrow is my last undergraduate class ever (er, granted that's what I thought four years ago, but this time it really is!) and it makes med school feel so much more real. I'm psyched! All I have left to do is get my physical and send off my final transcipts and I'm set. Woohoo! 🙂
