You need them. Didn't you see the classrooms on your interview? Everything's integrated with laptops. Pretty cool, I think.

Yes, I saw them, and our tour guide said we use them to type notes, hence why I asked the question. I'd just like to know if we do anything special with them, or if they're just substitutes for pens and pencils. I spotted a really awesome tablet yesterday that I would love to have, but I'd settle for a cheaper laptop if they're not put to real use.

I'm torn about this. They seem really cool, but I assume I am going to type my notes in class. Why are you leaning towards a tablet?

PS I know nothing about computers.

Because I'd be able to write on the powerpoints that the professors would send out.

im only going to get a tablet if the sell the "idiots guide to using a tablet" right next to it😀

For LDP...

Most people seemed to print out the power points ahead of time, and then take notes on them free-hand. I'd say in our class, only about half of the people had their laptop's up and running during a given lecture. Half of those people were playing on the internet.

I want to be the cool guy in the hospital who uses a PDA. That's all I need to feel complete as a med student, a PDA and maybe the pen light.

I really want one, but don't know if I can afford it. My laptop right now is less than a year old. I might see if I can trade with my parents. I give them my new one and they buy me a tablet in exchange...

Financial Aid lists $2k for a laptop, so they're giving you aid to buy it. I'd suggest a Wacom tablet and a regular laptop. http://www.wacom.com/
That's just me being cheap though...they give you $2k so you can go pretty high end. 🙂

you can get by without a laptop but sometimes the powerpoints aren't posted on time and you have to download them right before the lecture starts. in those instances, i use my laptop to take notes. normally though, i subscribe to the note service (which is student run), and they print out the powerpoints for you. if i had a tablet though, i would probably just use that instead because there is some drawing, etc when taking notes. either way is fine and do whatever is comfortable for you.

I use a tablet everyday at work and am not that impressed. The tablets seem to hit their max use after 2 years and then crap out.
I think it would be great to be able to write directly on the powerpoints and would suggest the Wacom with a regular laptop and not the tablet.🙂

I went up looking for apartments last weekend

some were really nice but had long waiting lists
the ones that were availible were in a shady area and not close to LECOM at all

But I was lucky I ended up geting a really great flat only 2 miles away from LECOM and right next to saint vincent hospital
Thanks Michelle

I've got the lenovo tablet, and I love it. I'm not a student yet, but I use it to read journals and take quick notes for my work. I think it will come in very handy in school, but it is a little pricey for the features you get!!!

I got three Master Promissory Notes, one for GradPLus and two for Stafford. Does anyone know if we need to send in all three? I guess I'll just go ahead and send all three...😕

yes, sign them all they are all separate loans.

Thanks. It's pretty mind-blowing seeing those forms and really realizing you're about to go into A LOT of debt. I used to feel burdened by the 20,000 I owe from undergrad and then these forms show up and I realize I'm borrowing twice that for just one year of med school! We must all be crazy 🙂 Gotta keep your eyes on the prize I guess👍

I saw people talking about laptops and I had a question kind of along those lines

I really want to get a PDA thing. I really am computer illiterate and I was wondering if at this point would it come in handy or is it something that I should wait to get later. And so any current students had any recommendations of what kind to get if it is a good idea.

you wont really need or use a pda during your first two years. i would hold off and get one right before you head out on rotations if you want one.

i am also a huge fan of the tablet pc. i was pbl, so i basically only used the tablet feature during anatomy, but it was a huge plus. i would definitely recommend it for ldp. nearly every lecture is on powerpoint, and you can use the tablet to write and draw right into the powerpoint files. that way, when it is time to study, you have it all right there in your computer, instead of binders and binders of notes. remember that each hour has 60-70 slides, times 8 or 9 hours per day...you can see how you will start to amass a lot of paper if you use paper notes.

just my two cents...

you know i really never though about how much paper it would end up being
I can see where paperless notes would come in handy
keep from killing too many trees

for those of you who are done with financial aid, how much loans (i mean dollars) are you allowed to take out?

After the school is paid for I will be getting a little over $23k for the first year.

so does that mean you are taking out $48,000 in loans, $23,000 of which is tuition?

Tuition and fees are about $26k or so and then I will get a bit over $23k for living expenses and all.

I think between 48-49K is the max you can take (including tuition fees)--fafsa will send you a letter and you can choose how much you want up to that max.

Well I just got back yesterday from a few days in Erie. I signed up to live in Belle Village. I was supposed to look at Belle Village with Julie, and then Brookwood & Carrollwood with someone from Palermo Realty. Well the lady from Palermo never showed up, never called me even though she had my number, and didn't answer her phone or respond to my phone calls. We drove to Carrollwood where the people there (also Palermo Realty) informed me Carrollwood has been sold out forever. I even sent her an email earlier this week confirming looking at Carrollwood. I come home to find an email from her the morning of her visit saying all the Carrollwood sold out "last night" and she's "not sure if I've left for Erie yet" so maybe I'll get this email, maybe not. She had my cell phone number, knew I was coming from Baltimore (6 hours away), and never called me!! We were mad.

Belle Village seems really nice, I am moving in first weekend in June.

Now I'm just trying to figure out what kind of laptop to get. I want a tablet, but one with a bigger screen than 12". Anyone have opinions on the Gateway or Toshiba models?

I've seen the gateway in person and it seems pretty good. Go to your local Circuit city, they should carry them.

Nope Circuit City nor Best Buy carry tablets, at least the 3 stores I checked. I can't even find them on the website.

Buying a computer from a place like CC or Best Buy is a terrible idea anyway. The price markups are criminal and you can't pick what's going into your computer. The moment you step into a store you're paying hundreds more than you should.

Best way to get a computer is to order from the maker's website.

👍 There are some other good sites too for buying and info...

Just buy a laptop and then buy a wacom. Best of both worlds and your screen isn't all gunked up from you writing with your grubby hands on it.

What model Wacom do you suggest? I think that's the route I'll go since I just got a new laptop. I don't want to buy another.

I've played with the gen 4 Graphire (Graphire4) and Intuous3. If you are just doing notes and drawing, there's no reason to go with the Intuous. The Graphire4 4"x5" is only $99. That's quite a deal to upgrade any laptop to a tablet. Other benefits I found are: USB cord only (no power cord in the way), easy CD install, pen/mouse are cordless and battery-free, and no gaps in buttons so study snacks don't get stuck in there. I liked the Intuous pen better but at $230 I'll stick with the cheaper Graphire. The scrolling was a bit lame but for $99, I expected quite a bit less. 😀

i don't have health insurance and I just got the bill for the physical and labwork LECOM required me to get to enter school. It cost A THOUSAND FREAKING DOLLARS. But I can completely understand why they require a 315 dollar drug and alcohol test. I mean, mothers of two smart enough to get into med school are often drug-abusers who lack the intelligence to flush their system before getting an announced drug test. 👍 I am so beyond broke now. I really should have just gone into advertising or something...

OH NO!!! i don't have ins. either!!! and i def. don't have $1000 to blow on those tests... WOW. anyone know how long it takes for ins. benefits to kick in? - if i were to sign up for a plan today?

😱 And I just called today to schedule a physical. What's the deal with the insurance we're supposed to get? Anyone know when we hear about that?

That really su... wait, why don't you have insurance?

Is it annoying then to transport a laptop and the separate tablet or whatever everywhere you go?

my husband works for a small architecture firm that doesn't offer benefits. I have a catastrophic plan incase I would ever get hit by a bus or something but we can't afford more than that.

For those of you who are uninsured: I would call LECOM and see if there is any way you can do the physical/bloodwork after school starts but before we start clinical stuff. We have an allowance for insurance built into our student loans. Perhaps they'll be kind and understanding....

My next joy: my son's upcoming visit to the opthomologist! Should be oh so cheap...

Thanks for the info, I'll see if someone wants to get me one for my birthday next month 😀

I can't quite picture how you take notes with it, though. The image doesn't show up on the tablet pad, does it? You draw on the pad blind and then see the lines appear on the computer?

Do you have to get XP tablet edition or something? I mean, I don't think regular XP supports drawing on stuff.

Sorry for the dumb questions, I'm new to the tablet thing.

Yea, you draw on it blind...but it's sorta like the first time you used a mouse (remember that?) It's a little confusing at first but then becomes second nature. Here is a link to the manuals from the Wacom website, which talk about how to use the tablet (Graphire4 User Manual)

You just use the device/software driver for the tablet, on the install CD or from their website

I hit Graphire4 (CTE) and got compatibility for Windows98-Vista, Linux, and *drool* Mac OS X. 😍

My aunt's toy poodle had purebred puppies. Pictures.

Convince me not to get one.

I really want one, and could do it since I'm ISP.

I just don't know how I'd handle rotations.

I'm not here to argue. The question was originally about ins. & how soon policy benefits kick in. WHY we don't have it is not the point.

Having the willpower of a monk could not save you from those little ones. 🙂

I just don't know what I'd do with them during rotations if I have to move!

Do LECOM students live in dorms on rotations, or how does that work?

How many loan lenders can we take out loans from?

I'd go for it. I have a dog too. You'll work it out. Do you have a family member or friend that could help out if you have to go away on rotations?

Anyone know if anyone has been accepted to LECOM from the waitlist yet? I'm waitlisted at 3 schools, accepted to 0 and freaking out!
