Yea yea, it would just be nice if people looked stuff up instead of keeping myths alive. It looks like I've met my match though with FieldDoc. 🙂

Don't get down on yourself, I've had a whole year of gunner training. I'm sure you'll be able to give me a run for my money by the end of next year.

Bye the way, our first year is over as of today! We had our last exam and are free at last. 😀 My biggest immediate advice following all the fun I had this year is to keep it simple. Manage your time well, don't get too obsessed with studying, and don't worry about being perfect. Work with your fellow classmates, help each other when times are rough, and always make time for friends. I made sure to make time to work out and watch some TV everyday, and I hung out with my boy and pretended not to be in medical school about every other weekend. I may not have a perfect 4.0, but I still have my sanity, my digestive tract is ulcer free, and I had a pretty good time. 😀

If you guys have any questions, feel free to PM me. I'll be in Africa for most of June, but then I'll be back (hopefully without malaria).

Congrats Fielddoc and thanks for the tips!

I'm getting pretty excited, my husband and I settle on our house next week and will be there to do renovations, all my paperwork is done, I have my new computer.... It's all coming together!!

Any one looking for a roomate or know where the good apartments are?

The apartment is no longer available. Thank you to those who responded.

Anyone heard of Woodland Apartments? I think it's close to the zoo? I knew of a LECOM student who lived there in the past and was wondering if it was worth checking out. I don't know who manages it though..

Pain in the butt.

So when the heck is LECOM gonna put a schedule online so that we know the dates of our Thanksgiving and winter breaks? I'll have to schedule doctor appointments in NJ then.

This just ticks me off.

Oh, does LECOM have like a student health center like in undergrad? Or are you on your own?

They probably won;t post the schedule for a while...so be prepared to wait. Don;t plan on scheduling doctor;s appointments for a while. (if you have LECOM insurance you;ll want to see doctors in Erie, otherwise they;ll be out of your coverage area. no sudent health center--we;re real grown ups now.

Just to let you know, its not going to be fun driving to school when there is a snow storm with places this far. It will take you forever to get to school. Not to mention this neighborhood is not the best. Look around before you stick with this one. :luck:

You're right, the prices do get higher as you go west. So if you dont mind driving in the snow and are already comfortable with the neighborhood then go for it. That was just my opinion. 👍

Pineapple, I dont know if this comes too late, but my friend and I went down on the 28th and 29th. We were interested in the same Victorian house the third floor. When we called the landlord the morning of-like he told us to do he said "oh the girl in there isn't moving out anymore" but I do have others. Well we were kinda bummed but we went to go look at the others which were on the east side by the way. When we drove up we knew we didn't want to live in that neighborhood. Don't bother going to his other apartments: disgusting, outdated appliances and multicolored 70's shag carpeting. But that is just our opinion. We went with Landmark Square which is very nice. Anyone looking for an apartment should check out their "special" which is a large 2 bedroom apartment basically for the price of the smaller 2- they are taking 1000 off because they need to fill the unit by June 29th (about 548/mo.). Central air and heat. All new construction inside with new appliances- no one has lived there yet. We figured it out and even with cable and high speed internet and utilities it would be cheaper than Tanglewood with utilities inc. because you still have to pay for cable there also. Hope this helps anyone and Pineapple let me know how you made out.

Hello. I'm going to be a second year med student at LECOM, and I am looking for someone to fill the other bedroom in my townhouse. It is a 2 bedroom townhouse about 4-5 minutes west of campus. It has a nice-sized living room, big kitchen with good appliances, basement with washer/dryer hookups, 2 upstairs bedrooms, 1.5 baths, a deck out the back into the yard, and assigned off-street parking right out the front door. Your share of the rent would be $270/month plus half of the electric, gas, cable, and internet. That comes up to around $70 a month per person most of the year and a little higher in the winter because of gas heat.

I'm a 23 year old male from Indianapolis, and I went to Purdue for undergrad. I'm pretty laid back about most things, and I like football and basketball. I keep the apartment pretty clean, quiet, and smoke-free. The complex also doesn't allow pets.

I need to sign a new lease starting June 15th. I really think this is one of the better deals around town, and that is why I'm looking for a roommate instead of moving. You can come see it anytime. I'd like to take care of this by next Saturday or Sunday (June 2nd/3rd). Let me know if you are interested or have any questions. Thanks.

Wow, this sounds like a great deal js2010!!! I wish I didn't have to bring my dog 😡

Anybody looking for housing? We have a four bedroom house but only have 3 people..........all 3 are lecom students........it will be 450 including all utilities in an extremely nice house.......im me if you want....... nickb423

Man Pineapple you are right on top of things with those pics! Anyway that one bed that you picked out seems a lot nicer that the other apartments he had that we looked at on the east side. We could have been neighbors if that 2bed 3rd floor apartment was open! Good luck living there and we won't be that far away we live at the end of 10th street. By the way anyone that lives around that area there is a extremely cute cafe called the 10th street cafe and they deliver!! We had lunch there and they have very good food and just about anything you could imagine. Good luck getting settled in everyone!

Ahhh...El Canelo...Every LECOM students favorite Mexican place. There's one out on 12th street. Some think that one is tastier and you leave smelling less like a mexican

Hello, future LECOMers!!! If anyone still needs a place to live, I've got a 2 bedroom townhome and I need a roommate. It's just off Lancaster and 38th. If you're interested, let me know. 🙂 It's pretty cheap, comparatively speaking, fully loaded kitchen, washer/ dryer in unit.

Anyone else from Texas? So far, I've only found 2 other Texans... (sad day) My last roommate says I should come to class in a full Texas outfit (boots, hat, everything), but I would never be that cruel to others. 🙄

To any current LECOMers: admittedly, I know very little about snow and other extreme winter weather. I've heard the city of Erie does a fairly nice job of salting down and plowing the roads. Do Erie drivers tend to slow down and be safe when inclement weather rolls in or do they drive like maniacs? In other words, are there lots of wrecks and fender-benders when the weather gets gross?

Also, for really, really cold weather, what articles of clothing would you never do without? If you moved up from the South (where we never get snow), what would be absolutely essential to know?

Signed,
Hopelessly warm 😎

The general rule is that for every 20 degree drop in weather, you need another layer of clothing. My friend from undergrad moved up to Alaska last year and he even confirmed it.

For outdoor temps:
100 - bikini (or no shirt for guys)
80 - t-shirt
60 - long sleeve shirt
40 - sweater
20 - sweater + jacket
0 - long t-shirt + sweater + jacket

Then again, I lived in NOLA for a bit and folks there had a different tolerance for cold than I did...they were freezing in 50 degree weather.

In all seriousness, the key is layering. It may be cold out, but you'll be miserable switching from the cold to the warm inside if you don't have layers to remove. Bring some thin shirts to go under layers and some heavier layers that are easy to take off (like a zipper hoodie) so you can have your LECOM dress code stuff underneath.

When I went to interview in Nov last year (by my opinion) it wasn't even jacket weather yet. I'd say pack light to make your move easy...it'll still be warm in August, and there are a million stores in Erie. As it gets colder, it'll be common sense and you'll be drawn toward the appropriate clothes to buy.

We (yours truly with wife, and two boys in tow) are moving into the Willow Wood Village appartments on or around the 22nd of June, ex-Missouri.

Has anyone checked out the new LECOM website? It's much better in my opinion. What do you guys think?

Woah, cool, thanks for the heads up. I hope they updated some of the info on there, the computer policy was years old!

What's the MyLECOM thing? It says you get access after you pay the fee, but I never got anything.

Looks like my.lecom.edu is actually the old website, just with a little newer information. They took all the prospective student stuff and put it on the new website. I do wish they'd post the schedules for years 1 & 2 though... It can't be that hard to cut and paste an old calendar, can it? 😛

I got fed up with my dysfunctional high school website back in the day, so I just walked into the computer center one day and commandeered the entire website. It's not that hard to run a school site or update stuff at all. Maybe 2-3 hours per week (and this was back in the day, hand coding). Then again, I didn't deal with server issues, that may be different. I just did web content, but yes, it's not hard to add a calendar.

The 2010 class is waiting on our schedule too. We don't even officially know when the first day of classes are yet.
Believe it or not, there's a committee that meets of students and faculty, I think during the summer, to go over the schedule and make changes if needed. They asked for volunteers for it, so you could be on that next year. I know, I know, try and contain your excitement.
That's why we don't have schedules yet. I think we got ours on the first day of orientation. They handed out a big packet that went week by week.

Ooohhh!! Schedules!! Am I the only nerd excited about getting my first med school schedule? 😀

(Warning: the above statement contains about half truth and half sarcasm.)

I was born in East Texas (near Tyler) but raised in the Houston area. I went to school at Baylor in Waco. What about yourself? Have you already moved up to Erie?

And Buckeye: thanks for the preliminary schedule! It really helps! 👍

Ft. Worth, but I went to Baylor!
That's odd I'm pretty sure there have only been about 6 baylor alum. who have gone to Lecom.
And, yes we have already moved up here. Moved from 95 degree days to the current 55 degree cold front!

Ha ha!! I was talking to one person from the North who asked if I liked doing things outside. My reply was "yeah, sure... when it's less than a 100 degrees outside.":meanie:

Hey guys,
Does anyone know if it's necessary to have a PDA for first year or second year? Does anyone know when we would be required to have one?
Thanks!

I doubt we need one until 3rd year and I doubt even then it is required. Most the docs I work with in the ER recommend having a PDA with epocrites (to reference drugs and diseases) but only recommend getting one when clinicals start.

You definitely will have no use for one first or second year. Maybe during rotations.

Please stop posting this every day. Some of us are subscribed to this thread and it's a pain to get the same message over and over. I think reposting like this is against board rules anyway.

Your identical message is on the same page 4 times now. If someone is interested in the place, they'd have seen it scrolling down.

Posting once or twice is understandable, but there is a place to advertise for housing. Besides, if someone's looking for a place, they'll probably look on that board first anyways.

A question for those already at LECOM: I heard something about limitations on some of the study rooms? Can you outline these a little more? For instance, I know food isn't allowed, but what about time limits, etc?

Thanks!

There is no time limit except when they have to close of course. But if you want a study room at the library, you have to have at least 3 people. The study rooms elsewhere in the building are open to anyone. The library closes at 11pm, the building at midnight.

I'm here in Erie with my two kids now. We moved in last weekend. If anyone wants to have a 2011 get-together for those of us in Erie early, let me know!
