LECOM-Erie Class of 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just sent out my physical/shots/history stuff 😀 Now all I have to do is wait for the FBI to complete my criminal background check and I'll be done...this could take a while🙄

So does lecom update their portal with physical forms and what not? i sent my forms mid january and still portal says they are missing. Anyone know whats up?

It's kinda slow. If you're concerned, you're better off calling and verifying over the phone.

Congrats to everyone who received an acceptance! I have a quick question: regarding the background check, what service have used - specifically if you are a PA resident? Do we need to get finger printed, and if so how did you go about that? I greatly appreciate any help/advice, thank you.

any OH residents do background checks yet?

I just did the one through the Pennsylvania State Police:

https://epatch.state.pa.us/Home.jsp

It costs $10 and takes like five minutes to do. If you're clear, you just print the confirmation to send in. If not, they mail LECOM the record for you. I sent mine in a few weeks ago and haven't had any complaints about it or requests for me to go through the FBI. They said a state check is acceptable though, so I think that's the way to go for PA (Much cheaper and easier than the FBI fingerprinting.)

Thanks! I contacted the security office and they sent me the same link 👍

Hey everyone!
My name is Bobby, finishing my first year as a PBL student at LECOM.
i wanted to offer up congrats to all those who got in for 2014, and to those who are waitlisted or waiting for march/april interviews, no worries, some people in my class were accepted in late april, no joke.

Good luck and see you in the fall
Hey Bobby,

Congrats for getting through (well almost) your first year. When you say people in your class were accepted, do you mean in the class of 2013 or more specifically PBL. I am interested in PBL but I hear the PBL erie is already filled up.

I bet PBL is full by now at both Erie and Seton Hill. Spots in PBL were pretty limited compared to LDP, and there have been a ton of people accepted to the PBL pathway already. You could always call and ask. I'm sure they'd be happy to update you on what's a possibility still. They've been nothing but helpful whenever I've called.

Hey has anyone started looking for a place in Erie yet to live? and what about the roommate list???

I'm accepted as an LDP right now, but I think I may be better suited for ISP. Can this be changed by LECOM or no?

My main issue is the mandatory attendance. I always learn better reading on my own time from the text book. My concern with ISP is that I would end up studying things that won't be tested, while LDP would be more straight forward (tests being based off slides). In undergrad, I'd always sit in the back and read from the text in class. Lectures just seemed like a waste of time when I could be studying on my own. However, just b/c it worked for me in undergrad doesn't mean it would work in med school. But I just don't like the idea of sitting in class from 8-5 while I could be studying and taking breaks when I want. Could a current student respond with their pros/cons about the two pathways?

I know they allowed a few changes at first back in August and September, but there might not be any spots left in the ISP pathway. They usually only accept a really small number of people into it compared to LDP and PBL.

Hey Diopstepp, I'm a first year ISP, and I LOVE it. I, like you, always felt that I learned better doing things on my own than have someone talk at me, but, like you, I also had some hesitations about it. As far as studying things that won't be tested, you really don't need to worry about that. ISP is organized into "modules" (first core classes, like biochem and physio, then systems, such as musculoskeletal, neuro, etc.). For each module, we get a packet with a list of objectives, which are basically things that you need to know. For example (as I'm sitting here procrastinating from studying for my musculoskeletal final coming up!), "Describe the clinical manifestations, radiographic pattern, and findings on pulmonary function testing seen in interstitial fibrosis" is one of our objectives, so you can see they are pretty specific. Yes, some professors write better/more direct objectives, while others can tend to be vague, but I think that is a problem students occasionally deal with in every pathway, and at every school. So I wouldn't worry too much about that aspect.

If you're not sure, I would try to get switched into ISP now, and feel it out. For the first 12 weeks, which is all of anatomy, the ISPs and LDPs are essentially the same -- class is mandatory, same tests, etc (PBL is the exception). I learned very quickly that I am not an 8 to 5 person, and I am definitely not a sit-in-class-from-8-to-5 person. I like having my own schedule, getting up and staying up as late as I want, and not "wasting" time in lecture (which it really is for me). I found myself in anatomy basically daydeaming and not paying attention for more than a few hours a day, only to come home at night to "review" -- but it was really like I was seeing a lot of the stuff for the first time. Being in lecture all day takes a lot out of some people (like me), and if you're not being productive during those hours, I think you'd be better off in another pathway.

There are a few "switch points" during the year that you can switch pathways, the main ones being right at the beginning, right after anatomy (mid-October), and between semesters. Occasionally they will let someone switch at other times but only if the LDP happens to be correlating with the ISP schedule at that time. At these times, you will ALWAYS be able to switch INTO LDP. We have assigned seats in the lecture hall, and that is your seat for the year, so there is no issue. However, ISP (and PBL) are capped at a maximum number of students, so there is usually always a waiting list to get into those. So, again, my advice is to request to switch into ISP now -- it will not affect your first 12 weeks, but by the end of Anatomy you will know for sure if class is something you like doing or if you feel like your time would be better spent working on the material on your own.

I hope this was helpful, and let me know if you have any other specific questions.🙂

That was excellent. Thank you very much. I am going to call and at least see if I can get on a wait list for ISP.

Ive recently been accepted into LECOM-Erie (2/25) for ISP. I originally had wanted LDP. I called them, and they had said that LDP was filled up and I am placed on a waitlist for LDP as of now. How similar is the first 12 weeks between ISP and LDP of I am not able to get into LDP before the first semester starts?

That is really weird! I have never heard of LDP being full. I wouldn't worry too much -- I know of a few of your future classmates that are in LDP but want to be in ISP, so I'm sure there will be some shuffling around -- people will change their mind about pathways, or choose to go to another school altogether, and that will open up some spots. I would call them periodically to ask if anything has opened up and to remind them of your interest in LDP. The first 12 weeks are exactly the same (the only difference is in OMM lab time), so there won't be any disadvantage to switching then instead of before the start of classes. And if for some reason you can't get in before classes start, I'm sure there will be a few LDPs who will be begging to be in ISP by the end of Anatomy. At least that's what happened this year -- ISP wasn't full when we started, but we added 6 people and now there is a waiting list for ISP. I know it's frustrating, but try not to worry!

Yeah this is pretty interesting. If there is already a waiting list for LDP, then some slots must be open still for ISP. Maybe we can just trade spots. I emailed Dr. Moore about switching and he forwarded my email to Amy Rowe. I hope to hear back from her soon. Good luck.

so Im wondering ...

whats the deal with summer. I know most med schools after the 1st year have summer vacation but waht about after that? does it depend on rotations or something?

In MS3 and MS4 you get vacation months, but it's different for everybody depending on where you're doing your clinicals and such. The only "summer break" is between MS1 and MS2.

I'm from Ohio. LECOM was my top choice from the start because it has 7 hospital affiliations for clinical rotations in Ohio. I just received the LECOM Connection (school magazine) and in it there are only 2 hospitals listed for clinical affiliations in Ohio. Any students know which source is correct? I'm hoping to do my rotations close to home so it's important to me, a little worried I'll be forced to do them elsewhere.

I was going to try to get you the list from our LRC (which you need to log in to do), but the link is spazzing out on me. Anyways, if you're interested in knowing where the class of 2009 matched (2010 hasn't been publicly released yet for the osteo match that I know of, and the allo match hasn't happened yet), I sorted out the Ohio matchers. I included the total number of students matching in each area so that you can get a feel for about what fraction go to Ohio. Although this list doesn't mean that these are LECOM affiliates, it should give you an idea of the hospitals where we've formed some kind of contact.

Can any of the current LECOM students post what sort of equipment we need to get. Do we need a stethoscopes, otoscope, ophthalmoscope, BP cuff, etc.? I'd like to start finding prices for those types of items. Thanks.

You will have a presentation from Welch Allyn, and you can order stuff from them through the bookstore -- apparently we get good deals on it. Mine was just under $950, and included:

- medical bag
- bp cuff (you need at least adult and peds)
- ophthalmoscope (I got the panoptic head as well as the coaxial, but you are only required to get the coaxial), lithium ion battery (but you could opt for the cheaper one) and charger
- otoscope
- tuning forks
- reflex hammer
- eye chart
- pen light

You'll get a steothoscope at the White Coat Ceremony, and you don't need one for H&P before then, so I wouldn't recommend buying your own. The ones they give are pretty nice (Littmann Cardio IIIs), so unless you have one hanging around, I'd just wait until the ceremony. You'll have to price everything out to see if you can get a better deal, but I think we get a pretty good deal through LECOM (especially if you are interested in the panoptic .. the promo they had with us was something ridiculous like it was only $50 or something to get the panoptic if you also bought the coaxial head).

for people who just got in (i mean like post feb 25th) was anyones first choice LDP and not get LDP. i hear that its already full?? i remmeber them saying that all PBL students will have a slot of LDP should they want to switch (assuming u go to erie). for those who did get PBL, were u at ERIE or seton hill (include ur preference)

thx

(idk y its bold up top i tried to unbold it but didnt work so sry!)

how likely is if it that if you got waitlisted now (i think waitlist just started) that you actually get accepted due to drop outs... anyone know anyone that was waitlisted say around march and then got in?

just asking for a friend

While we can all speculate there is no one in the class that can give you a definate answer and if they do then they are lying, we don't sit on the adcom. But I do know of people who were pulled off the wait list with less than a week to go before class starting

hey if there are any muslim students who are accepted for medschool or postbacc feel free to contact me if you have any questions regarding erie and osteopathic medical school and stuff like that

Hey Tar,

Are you currently a student? If so, PBL or LDP? How do you like it in Erie?

I don't know stats, but I was waitlisted in April and got accepted late May. So it happens.

Can anyone explain the 'Courses' vs. 'Modules'? I'm assuming modules are sections within courses, but then where does Biochemistry fit, for instance?

Thanks! 😕

Can anyone explain the 'Courses' vs. 'Modules'? I'm assuming modules are sections within courses, but then where does Biochemistry fit, for instance?

Thanks! 😕

Note: This is for LDP. ISP is similar for systems but in Core they only take one class at a time, finish it in two weeks and take 1-2 exams over it. PBL is on their own schedule and I have no clue how it works there.

Courses are the individual classes you take, i.e. Biochem, Physio, Micro, etc

Modules are a grouping of courses. So you start out with Anatomy Core which includes gross anatomy, histo, and embryo. Then you go into Core I which includes physio, micro, and biochem I. That takes up the first semester. Second semester you start with Core II. This includes, pharm, biochem II/genetics, and path. Once this is over you start into systems. We just finished up our Musculoskeletal system last week. Now we are in Basic Neuro for 5 weeks and then go to Clinical Neuro.

In Core, you will take a test for each class you are currently taking. So in one day, we had a micro test and a physio test. At the end of the semester, we had our micro final and biochem final and a week before that was our physio final. Anatomy core lasted 12 weeks and then the rest of the semester was Core I. Core II lasted 6 weeks.

Every system includes micro, path, physio, biochem/genetics, anatomy, histo, embryo, pharm, clinical correlations, etc. You will take a test that may or may not include all of these areas. So our first MSK test was upper limb. Our second was back and spine. Our third/final was lower limb + cumulative.

Neuro is set up different from the rest of the systems. We start with basic neuro which covers neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, and neuro biochemistry. Embryo and histo are part of the anatomy portion. Our tests will be over these 3 classes. We have two exams for basic neuro. After 5 weeks we start clinical neuro. We take neuropharm, neuropath, micro, ophtho, and clinical neurology. We also have two exams for this section of neuro.

Thanks!...makes sense and seems like a good way to reinforce and retain concepts.

Good Luck with all your exams!

🙂

What the... went and got my ID photo taken and looked at apartments. Some of the waitlists are already 80 people long. What did people do, sign up for apartments when they interviewed?

I was thinking the same thing. I called Pastore builders (the places right across the street from LECOM) on Tuesday and they said there were like 60 people on the waitlist. They also wouldn't tell me when the new units they're building would be finished (even though they look about ready). I feel like I should write them a letter of intent and call every week to see if there's movement of the list...:laugh:LOL

yea man i put down my name in februrary and even then there was quite a waitlist... but if u are looking for a june/july rental then your out of luck... if ur willing to pay for a few extra months then you can sign up for a may move in. i recently got a rental starting in may... but there was a huge waitlist if i wanted to move in in june/july. i got my apt from maleno development: Lakeview apts

I doubt anyone is out of luck for a rental in July there. Most lease agreements don't require the tenant to say whether they will renew the lease or not until 60 days before the end of the lease, so the landlords don't really have an idea of what units will be coming open and probably won't know for sure until about May. Since there are likely a lot of 2nd years there who will be leaving for rotations, there will probably be several apartments opening up. Also, since they are building more apartments there should be a ton of units coming available this summer.

I went out there two weeks ago and looked at the pastore apartments. They did the whole waitlist thing and when I said that I would start paying in April to get one of the apartments, they let me choose one in the new units going up. If it means I have to start paying next month, I'll deal with it. That is how badly I wanted one of those apartments. Apparently my dad's addage "if you throw money at a problem, it will go away," sometimes works. (I am by no means rich, I just have been saving every bit of money since I started college seven years ago. It also helps that my fiance has a steady job right now.) Good luck.

Hey guys,
I was amazed when I saw this thread, it seems like just yesterday that my class was starting the 2010 thread. Congratulations to all! Anyway, I'm graduating this year, so if anyone has any questions about LDP or ISP, housing, Erie, or whatever...I can try and answer you. PMing me is the best way to get ahold of me.
I also know a couple of residents at the local hospitals that have homes with a room or two for rent in them. I know you guys were talking about snow when this thread started, and I know some ISP students who commuted into Erie and rented a room at a place in town just for part time living due to snow and drive times. If any of you ISPers are looking for a room I can point you in the right direction for that too.
Congrats!
🙂

Hey Guys,

First off, congratulations! I'm a current 3rd year at LECOM and my wife and I are looking to sell our house. It is a 3-bedroom, english-tudor style home in the Glenwood area (3 minutes from LECOM). Fenced-in backyard, brand new windows, and an amazing neighborhood. PM if you are looking for a place and are interested and I can send you pictures of the house and more details!

For those looking at apartments, I have a room open in a Vineyard Village townhouse on the same road as LECOM. It's 2 stories + basement, 1.5 baths, full kitchen, washer/dryer, electric heat.

Where should I try to live since I am PBL?

Hello ~ any recommendations for 1 bedrooms apts near downtown? that post abt long wait lists freaked me out. I am going to start calling place this week and if any one can point me in the right direction, I would really appreciate it!!!

thanx XD

Anyone had their appointment with the Security Office? My parents and I are going apartment hunting for the next 2 days in Erie... and I have mine on Tuesday. I kind of forgot to ask questions such as... oh... where do I go? 😛 I know you need ID to get in the building so really I'm just clueless as to what I'm doing. I'll give them a call tomorrow unless I see an answer on here before then haha. Also-they said dress professionally? Like interview-style? I don't really understand why thats necessary. Is it really necessary?

Also... if anyone has tips about apartment hunting it would be much appreciated! 🙂

Hi future classmate 🙂 I am going on Thursday... they said to just go in as you did for your interview and Colleen will direct you to the security guys. My professional dress is probably going to be dress pants and a blouse... I don't know if a jacket is necessary. I may bring it in case, but not wear it. I think they just mean dress-code style, since they call it "professional attire".

As for apartments, I'm looking myself on Thursday, so I don't know how helpful I can be.

Dress up in a shirt and tie. No need to wear a suit. When you walk in, there is a window to your left between the two doors. That's the security office. Just tell them you are there for your appt. You will fill out some vehicle registration forms and take your picture for your ID.

Excellent. Thanks 🙂 So... girl speaking, dress pants and nice button down top is acceptable? And can I bring my dad so we can walk around a little bit...? Will they let me do that? I kind of want to be a big nerd and make him buy me a LECOM sweatshirt or something. Thanks and JRjcu, good luck with the apartment hunt. We've spent a few hours doing that already today. Doesn't help its a rainy, gross day... but its not the most fun I've ever had 😛
