We're renting a townhouse from this gentleman. The apartments he's renting look beautiful and after 2 hours on the phone with him my impression is that he's an upstanding guy. If you call, tell him that the guy renting the Moorhead apartment sent you. He definitely likes LECOM students and is likely to work with you on a lease start date.

Anyone looking for a place to stay? I'm currently a male MS-1 LDP and I live in a 3 BR/1.5 BA house on 41st St, less than a mile away. One of my current roommates is a 2nd year student and is moving away for rotations so we're looking for someone to take his spot. Rent is $330/month + Cable/Internet/Gas/Utilities which would be divided by 3. The house is furnished except your bedroom, has 2 floors + basement with washer/dryer. And you'll be living w/ 2 other students. Interested or have any questions please message me.

Anyone had their appointment with the Security Office? My parents and I are going apartment hunting for the next 2 days in Erie... and I have mine on Tuesday. I kind of forgot to ask questions such as... oh... where do I go?
Go to the main entrance (the one in the rear of the building.) Look through the glass to the left: that's the security office. Ring the bell and go in.

Also-they said dress professionally? Like interview-style? I don't really understand why thats necessary. Is it really necessary?
It's for your ID picture. I threw a shirt and tie over a tee shirt and shorts. The picture will contain your head and shoulders to about mid-chest.

Guys need a tie, girls need a nice blouse. No jacket.

Also... if anyone has tips about apartment hunting it would be much appreciated! 🙂
Make sure you check the unit before you put money down. Also, I'm looking for a roommate and would rather coordinate one on here then get someone random from my realtor's wait list, so feel free to drop by when you're in town.

Excellent. Thanks 🙂 So... girl speaking, dress pants and nice button down top is acceptable? And can I bring my dad so we can walk around a little bit...? Will they let me do that? I kind of want to be a big nerd and make him buy me a LECOM sweatshirt or something. Thanks and JRjcu, good luck with the apartment hunt. We've spent a few hours doing that already today. Doesn't help its a rainy, gross day... but its not the most fun I've ever had 😛

Yea you can take your family around. Just make sure they wear something nice (collared shirt) and tell the security guard. The only problem is the bookstore was closed today because the bookstore manager was sick. Hope she isn't when you come.

Curious - did you leave with your ID card today or do they just take your picture & give you the card at orientation?

They just took my picture. I saw what my ID will look like on the computer, but didn't walk away with it in hand.

Thanks for all the other advice, everyone. I think I found a pretty good apartment-unless anyone has anything horrible to say about Royal Villa (in which case you will crush my soul a little, so even if you think its a crap-hole, please say "wow, I've heard wonderful things 😛) But seriously... if anyone has any advice about the place, tell me now before I sign a lease 🙂

And JRjcu08: good luck apartment hunting later this week, if you have any other questions let me know as it sounds you're about to take the adventure I just had the past 2 days. I do think I'll end up at Royal Villa. I'm on a waiting list, but he said its like 10 people and he knows about 20-30 are leaving so I'm pretty much guaranteed a spot. So if you check it out and like it and put your name in on Thursday, you should be fine. There's an application and a $7 fee, but no biggie. It's a little pricey, I think, but better than the Laurel Ridge and Laurel Springs that are right across the street. Also, the pics online of the kitchen are a lie 🙂 But I don't cook sssoooo I'm not really concerned. I'd say if you're looking for roommates, check out the stuff on here and our facebook group? I haven't even had my own bedroom for the past 3 years so I decided to cough up some more money and live completely alone this year, but the guy said Royal Villa typically has quite a few LECOM students and thats what I wanted to hear so I'm pretty excited. 🙂 But seriously, anything else you want to know: ask. Clearly, I'm pretty chatty. So I'll stop now. I look forward to any questions though, I'd love to be of assistance 🙂

I'm interested in Royal Villa as well. I called to get on the waitlist but was told that you have to visit the apartments before that can happen. Being on the other side of the country, that is not going to be too easy or convenient. I think I'm going to try and reschedule my ID appointment to get out to Erie sooner.

Oh wow, I didn't realize you had to visit first. Their application was kind of ridiculous though, it was just like 5 pages of everything about my life. So far, it sounds like you'd get an apartment if you get on their list soon. They seemed pretty easy to work with though so I don't know if you'd want to consider trying again... I think their list could get really long real quick.

Hey guys,
car advice: buy a car that can drive in snow or carpool to school with a student who has four wheel drive. I used to drive everyone to school in the snow because I was the kid with all wheel drive. Also, I you are going to buy, buy now if you have a job, because your credit app won't look as nice with no job and student loans on it.

housing advice: not Grenada, stay in Millcreek portion of Erie. Downtown is sketchy and if you don't know the city you could be hosed into getting a place in a not great area. I lived in lakeview my first and second year. I rented without looking at the places, they're all nice so if you can't get in to visit, that should be fine. Their wait list was long, they have two bedroom units and a splattering of one bedroom units. The laurel ridge and overs mentioned in the last few posts are good too. Do not live in Granada. Get a place with a garage if possible. Or buy a car starter. Whichever. PM me with questions about lakeview and I'll tell you hints about what unit to pick for those interested. Do not, under any circumstances, live in Granada.
To save the most money, have a roomate or rent a room from one of the upperclassmen or residents in town ::cough:: shameless plug ::cough:: I have a four bedroom house with a room for rent and so does my other resident friend. The bonus to that is, no variable bills, just a flat cheaper then renting a whole place fee, free access to all our old medical books and unlimited knowledge base, you won't have to buy furniture because we can furnish the room...the list goes on and on. 😉 PM me if interested and with all questions about LECOM. It's easier to answer PMs the to post on here with the iPhone in between seeing patients.

This may be an unusual request, but here it goes. Anyone who has PBL-Erie and is considering accepting another spot at another school or is in PBL-Erie and is considering changing campuses or pathways, please PM me before dropping PBL-Erie. I have a few questions.

I just want to second that bit about the Granada apartments- we visited the place because the pics looked nice, and there was an arrest warrant taped on the door of the apartment adjacent to the one we were shown.... just sayin'. It sucks. Avoid it.

I will third on this. I visited there before. On top of the nasty green shag carpeting, there was a crazy lady chasing a dog around and tell us to never live there.

Anyone currently at LECOM using a Mac have any recommendations for cheap antivirus software that will satisfy the IT guys at school when I stop in to configure my laptop? Are there any particular requirements?

I don't have a Mac but I use AVG. It's free to download. Just get any anti-virus and I'm sure they won't care all that much.

ClamXav - free, good

Hello everyone! I'm an MSIV that is about to graduate and I remember how confusing (and scary) it was starting medical school... If you have any questions about LECOM, Erie, rotations, or anything down the road just message me on here and i'll get back to you ASAP. I'm going to do my residency in Radiology next year, so if anyone is interested or has questions about that field of medicine just ask!

😱Good luck!😱

Hey guys, thanks for the leads. I already use ClamXAv. Free and Broad protection. Glad to know that IT will like it too.

Word.

Hey everyone,

I was just up in IT the other day and while waiting around and talking to the PC support people, one of them told me they had banned the next class form having macs?

I asked her again and she confirmed. Don't know if that means they will not support them or not allow them? Either way, if you have a mac or are thinking of one, I would call IT to confirm.

Shouldn't be a problem for anyone with a newer, Intel-based Mac, as we can just use Boot Camp to dual boot Windows XP on it. Problem solved! Might be an issue for anyone with an older PowerPC model though.

Honestly though, I don't they could complete ban Macs just like that. People in the three classes before ours would still be using them, and I don't think they could go back and force all those people to switch now.

I work as a computer tech, and while I do put Norton on the Macs I support I don't really think you need it, considering there aren't very many viruses for macs.

Hi everyone,

I'm wondering if maybe someone can help- I'm looking for a house to rent for myself, my husband and our cat... anyone know of any homes coming up for rent this summer?

Thanks so much! 🙂

Try looking on craigslist. They have lots of places listed.

Don't do PBL-Erie, if you applied to bradenton then do it there. And if you were accepted anywhere else other than LECOM, i would seriously consider that. There's several number of reasons but i won't go into detail. You want to be happy choose somewhere else.

there's several houses you could rent minutes away from the school that take pets. Goggle housing in Milkcreek township. HOpe that help. However i do believe there's a waitlist.

I'm also looking to get rid off some books and furniture. If you are in town and wish to see it shoot me an email! Everything must go by April 24
Thanks!

Neither did I, but I didn't sign up for the roommate list. Have you joined the facebook group? There's lots of us there, plus some current students.

Hey guys,
I am moving out of Erie for rotations in May and I need to sell an apartment washing machine. It hooks up to the kitchen sink. My apartment's washing area was scary. This contraption saved us money during the 2 years we lived here in Erie instead of going to the laundry mat. We are asking $100 for it, we paid $220 2 yrs ago and it is in good working condition. If anyone is interested send me a message.

Hey guys,

My name is Matthew Bowser, and I am graduating OMS-IV from LECOM in Erie. I am headed to Florida for my residency. My wife and I bought a nice house when we moved to Erie for med school 4 years ago, and we are trying to sell the house to another med student if possible because of its ideal location and amenitites. The house is located at 2809 Pittsburgh Avenue, which is all of 1.75 miles from the school. I actually went home to have lunch with my wife every day during 1st and 2nd years! The house is also located within 10-15 minutes of all the hospitals in Erie, so it's ideal for the clinical rotation years too.

It is a 3 bedroom and 2 bathroom Cape Cod style house. The downstairs features a large kitchen with gas stove, microwave, refrigerator and dishwasher. The kitchen also has a nice island with two bar stools. There is an eat-in dining room just off the kitchen as well. The main floor also has the living room, a full bathroom and two very good size bedrooms. There is also a large, sunny Florida room out back that overlooks the spacious backyard. The backyard is PERFECT for anyone with kids or dogs or anyone who likes to cook out and enjoy the outdoors! It is 140 feet long and 65 feet across and enclosed entirely by a 6ft wooden privacy fence we installed. We just put in a new steel shed at the end of the yard as well. I plan to leave the snow blower, propane grill and lawn mower with the house too! The upstairs is what my wife really liked about the house when we bought it. Originally it was 3 bedrooms, but it was turned into a master suite by the previous owner. One entire side of the upstairs is the sleeping area, which dwarfs our king-size bed! There is also a walk-through dressing area/closet that leads to a private master bath. We re-did this master bath with a cherry cabinet/sink and matching mirror and medicine cabinet. This bathroom also has a large, stand-up shower with a decorative glass door. The basement has washer/dryer hook-ups (both gas and electric). We currently have it setup with a work out area and a good-sized woodshop for me. There is a mudroom with access to the backyard from the basement as well.

Don't forget that if you agree to buy the house before April 30 you will get a $8500 tax refund!! If you are interested you can check out the house at:

http://www.realtor.com/realestateandhomes-detail/2809-Pittsburgh-Avenue_Erie_PA_16508_1116687560

Thanks guys and good luck at LECOM -- it's a long 4 years, but it is definitely worth it in the end!

Question to lingering current students:
Does anyone know of the list of books we will need for first year? Also, if you purchase books from the LECOM bookstore, will they accept payment from your loan refund check or do you need to fund your book purchase with real money (aka money you have before loan refund)?

Question to lingering current students:
Does anyone know of the list of books we will need for first year?

Note: This is the list we used this year. The list could change but I highly doubt it

Gray's Anatomy for Students Drake 9780443069529 (Needed)
Anatomy Dissection Kit available in the bookstore (Wait to buy until you start lab bc there will be plenty of them floating around in lab)
Anatomy Lab Guide available in the bookstore (Needed)

Pick of of the following atlases:
Gray's Atlas of Anatomy Drake 9780443067211
Atlas of Human Anatomy Netter 9781416033851
Atlas of Anatomy Gilroy 9781604060621
Color Atlas of Anatomy Rohen 9780781790130 (I used this but never in lab)

Langman’s Medical Embryology Sadler 9780781790697 (Not really needed)
Histology: A Text and Atlas Ross 9780781772211 (Not needed)

That's all the books you will need to worry about for the first 12 weeks.

Also, if you purchase books from the LECOM bookstore, will they accept payment from your loan refund check or do you need to fund your book purchase with real money (aka money you have before loan refund)?

I'm confused by your question. Are you asking if you can put them on a "tab" that will take the money out of your loan refund? If so, then no. You have to buy them with your own money or wait until your refund check comes in (takes a couple weeks).

Thanks bleeker, exactly what I was looking for!

I would just buy all of your books used (amazon, alibris, eBay) because it's so much cheaper. I even bought older editions on some books to save money because a lot of changes made are minor. Sometimes the books recommended are useless and review books are better anyway.

A lot of students have old books for sale. I would check on the for sale items on this forum as well.

Yea I second this advice. There are some books you will have to get at the bookstore (lab guides) and some that are easier to get there (neuroanatomy). You will probably use BRS books more than textbooks if you are LDP. The best advice I can give is to talk to second years when you arrive on campus. We know what is best to use for each class. Most of the people bought FA when we started systems. Again, buy this online. You probably won't need it for the fall semester but it is helpful for pharm in the spring

When I went to the bookstore a few weeks back, the day I went for my ID photo, the nice lady there told me the list of books would be made available to us online sometime in May. She also said that none of the books were new editions, unlike last year, so we should be able to get most of them online at a fairly good price. Like Bleeker mentioned above, she also said we only really need our histo, embryo, and anatomy books for the first twelve weeks, and that most of the books we buy as first years will be reused in our second year as well (Buying new, second year books are about $300 compared to $1500 for the first year.)

Word of advice, I have never opened my histo book...once. Ditto for my embryo book. One good resource that worked for me was BRS Gross Anatomy. It's especially good for practice questions.

For histo you won't need the book. Just study the powerpoint slides, memorize the pictures and you will get an A. That's what I did. Outside of the 4 weeks of histo with anatomy, we have needed to reference the histo book twice in neuroanatomy. If you do noteservice, they should send out the distance education objectives for histo filled out so you won't need to open the book. If you really want to see the book, go up to the library. They have copies up there. The only reason I bought the histo book is because I am HPSP and get reimbursed for books. You won't need embryo either. The embryo prof is really really good and if you listen to him and take good notes then you will get an A. The only books I would get for anatomy is Gray's for students and an atlas (Netter's is the gold standard). I bought Rohen's atlas because it has actual pictures of dissections but I never used it in lab. I would use it before a lab test to quiz myself on structures. Also take advantage of the material on the UMich site. There will be a link on portal for it. It is really beneficial.

I definitely plan to buy used books as soon as they confirm the list. Do most people not buy or use the histo/embryo books? I am nervous not to get all the materials and end up needing them-- How many copies do they have in the library to reference? Can you check them out, or are they required to stay in the library?

Also- I remember student affairs saying if you join SOMA you get a free Netters' Atlas. Will you get this early, or should you buy another one (ie Rohen's) to have on day 1?

Last-- when you were an upcoming 1st year, did people (independently) meet to socialize/ get to know each other before orientation? I'm sure it'd be easy to work that out on facebook or something & I'm a total party-planning person and I'd love to set something up.

Trust me when I say you won't need histo/embryo if you are LDP or ISP. The lecture slides are fantastic. Talk to second years to see if they can give you any supplemental materials. We made a lot of practice quizzes and stuff like that. I'm not sure how many copies are in the library but I have seen a few of each there.

AFAIK, SOMA stopped doing this before I get here. I never heard anything about it when it came time to sign up for the club. I had heard something on SDN about SOMA not doing it anymore. I'll ask around though. I know some SOMA officers

My roommate organized a trip to Cedar Point the week before school started and about 20 of us went and camped out there. It was a ton of fun and those people are my closest friends here. We also just facebooked each other to see if people wanted to meet out at the bars so hang out. I organized a bbq and had it at a park here. About 75-100 people showed up and we talked and grilled and had a merry ole time. You should set something like that up. Word of advice, don't associate it with LECOM and don't provide alcohol. If people show up with beer then there's nothing you can do about it. You don't want anyone to do anything stupid before school starts and get kicked out for an alcohol related offense

Are the lecture notes in PDF format usually? and im guessing we get them online? I have a tablet pc (not any of this ipad business) and have always taken notes onto pdf files via PDF Annotator. Just wondering cuz the upgraded version costs 20 bux for students and i dont want to buy it and not use it.

thx

You get the lectures in .ppt/pptx format. There are no direct notes from the professors (99% of the time). If you subscribe to noteservice they'll give you notes in .doc/.docx format.

is note service just the powerpoint stripped down? or is it supplemental to the ppts. and u said no direct notes so what are the ppts of?

The powerpoints are the actual lectures that the professors put on the screen in the lecture hall. Some supplement (verbally) what is written on the powerpoints, some just read off of them. I just meant that the professors don't include detailed written out notes in all text format.

Note service does more than a stripped down powerpoint. They usually include anything the professor says that isn't on the powerpoints, and they will do extra stuff like fill in learning objectives, distance education, etc...

For those looking for housing--I'm moving out of a 1br cottage and it will be available July 1st.

The cottage is located on Summer St. and is a 5-10 minute walk or 2 minute drive to LECOM. It has 1br, 1 bath, small kitchen, dining room, and living room. The landlord's are fantastic and take care of all snow removal in the winter. Rent is $425/month + gas & electric. I felt this was the perfect place to live in a quiet neighborhood within walking distance to LECOM. Send me a message if you'd like the contact information for the landlord.

Hi c/o 2014! I have signed up to be the treasurer for the note service for our class. It will help to get the leadership group organized before school begins so the transition is smooth. I've been talking to someone from the c/o 2013 who will guide our group further once the other two positions (Head Scribe and Head Runner) are filled. The descriptions are below. Let me know if you'd like to take on one of these roles. PM me with questions or willingness to commit.

Positions:

Head Scribe: responsible for emailing notes to paying members and to the Head Runner. As the Head Scribe you will have 10-20 scribes (which the Head Scribe is responsible for recruiting) that will take notes for an assigned lecture ( The Head scribe is responsible for scheduling each scribe a specific lecture, lectures are split into 1 hour time slots). These notes should be delivered to paying members and the Head Runner within a 24 hours of the lecture.

Head Runner: For each lecture PPT presentation and notes taken there are hard copies printed out. These have to be delivered to paying members lockers. The delivery is typically done in the morning before classes start (apx 7:30am) The head runner will have 5-10 runners working with him/her to deliver notes. you can rotate runners weekly or monthly (currently the class is doing monthly rotations).

Thanks!!
😀
