LECOM-Erie Class of 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'll be flying out to Erie to check out apartments during the week and get my ID photo taken at LECOM.

I will be there on Monday to look for a place. Let me know if you see anything or anywhere that is available. Anyone in the area have an idea of where to look and what may be available?

Sure. I'm getting frustrated with trying to find a place. I'm on the West coast, and I've had 2 calls about available places in June, but by the time I have a break during work to call back, they have already moved on to the next person. Why call me if you don't give me time to respond!?!?!

I am in a similar situation. I just want to see a place before I put money down. If it were just me I would live just about anywhere but since my wife and kid are coming with me I need to find somewhere decent to live.

Hi c/o 2014! I have signed up to be the treasurer for the note service for our class. It will help to get the leadership group organized before school begins so the transition is smooth. I've been talking to someone from the c/o 2013 who will guide our group further once the other two positions (Head Scribe and Head Runner) are filled. The descriptions are below. Let me know if you'd like to take on one of these roles. PM me with questions or willingness to commit.

Thanks!!
😀

I was in charge of the noteservice for my class. I can give anyone a heads up on what it entails. I did the head scribe and head runner job combined without difficulty. Its an easy way to get a leadership role early on and everyone knew who I was by the first few weeks of school thanks to the position. It actually came up in my interviews for residency when a doc asked me about it because he had run his noteservice back in the day for his class, so you never know what will give you a talking point in the future. There's tons of spaces on residency applications for activities/research/leadership, just like when you apply to medical school. Don't ever let med school scare you from doing other things, tons of people have done it before you and tons will follow, so its obviously not an impossible task.

I'm also looking for a roommate (I'm a soon-to-be resident in town) and my roommate that I had just got into a school in their hometown that they were waitlisted at, so they are going there instead. I tried to PM people that were looking for a roommate, but if you are looking for a place with a private bedroom and private bath, drop me a PM (free access to my med books and notes 😀 ). Heck, if you have any questions about LECOM/Erie in general, feel free to drop me a PM.

Was it really necessary to post that four times?! 😛

Hey everyone!
I posted to the discussion thread about this but I figured people here may also have some advice. I recently received an invitation to interview at lecom-erie on may 14th. I'm really excited since I was pretty sure I would end up at grad school (which I was happy with but starting med school would be amazing!). I know an interview obviously does not guarantee admission but since they have a pretty sizable waitlist populated already, I was wondering if anyone knew what the deal was? I'm obviously going to interview but I don't want to get my hopes up too high that I'll be accepted. Any thoughts?

(I also thought those on the waitlist would be interested in the fact that they are still conducting interviews pretty late into may.)

Thanks!

I am a OMS-II, but I think this still holds true. For my class, there were people who literally found out a week or 2 before class started that they were off the waitlist and I think a few just showed up the first day and got seats that had just been vacated. It certainly is a possibility, since many people decline acceptances after interviewing.

That is interesting.....I am on the waiting list and I thought that interviewing would be finished by the end of April. I was hoping to here something back soon. Does anybody know the chances of being accepted off of the waiting list?

I got off the waitlist the monday before classes started. They would never tell me where I was on the waitlist or how many people were on the wait list when I called. So I had to move my husband and myself from IL in 4 days to be in my seat bright and early Saturday morning (no excuses).

On another note that Haier apt washing machine I am selling is down to $25. See previous post for link to what the washing machine looks like and its features.

I have a spacious house for rent in a beautiful neighborhood minutes from LECOM and shops. It's a 2br brick home with lovely yard space and full basement and attic. Rent is $800 so $400 per student. Small pets are fine.

I'm currently a soon to be 4th yr LECOMer. PM me for pics and more info.
Btw home will have landscaping and snow removal included in rent.

Thanks

I told you before no one wants your washing machine, you should have used the ones in the basement instead.

heh...

Just wanted to bump this post about Note service... we still need a head scribe and head runner!
Remember, if you participate in either of these positions, you will get free note service. Noteservice charges about 150/semester for 'full' service.

Positions:

Head Scribe: responsible for emailing notes to paying members and to the Head Runner. As the Head Scribe you will have 10-20 scribes (which the Head Scribe is responsible for recruiting) that will take notes for an assigned lecture ( The Head scribe is responsible for scheduling each scribe a specific lecture, lectures are split into 1 hour time slots). These notes should be delivered to paying members and the Head Runner within a 24 hours of the lecture.

Head Runner: For each lecture PPT presentation and notes taken there are hard copies printed out. These have to be delivered to paying members lockers. The delivery is typically done in the morning before classes start (apx 7:30am) The head runner will have 5-10 runners working with him/her to deliver notes. you can rotate runners weekly or monthly (currently the class is doing monthly rotations).

Thanks!!

You're just jealous b/c I didn't have to fight the yucca bugs in the LS basements like you did, slevin

I never even saw the bugs... besides who am I going to torment next year when I turn around? It's not like you'll be there.

Oh and put it up on Craig's list. Peeps are always looking for stuff like that here

too creepy, I think we are gonna give it to the salvation army Sunday if nobody wants it.

No you won't need a white coat. There will be a white coat ceremony in January for your class. You can have a white coat for anatomy lab, but there are plenty in the lab already. You won't be doing anything in the first semester where you will need a white coat. In the second semester you do H&P practicals (PE on standardized pts) and you will need the white coat LECOM gives you for that

I just received my white coats consultation coats that I ordered from Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/White-Swan-Un...XRVET3WP5I5&s=generic&qid=1273177224&sr=1-108
I was able to get 2, plus shipping for $29, and they are good quality, if anyone still needs theirs. These are women's but I believe the same company sells men's too.

Why would you buy a white coat? That's just money down the drain. You get one at the white coat ceremony in January. Plus 1st semester you don't need one and 2nd semester you will use the white coat maybe once a week. Third and fourth semesters you'll maybe use the white coat every other week, if that much.

Next you'll be telling me you a copy of first aid for step 2.

I know you are excited but slow your roll, things will come when they come. no need to get all uppity and waste money like that right now

Update: we have a head scribe now. Still need a head runner.

Wow, calm down. They told us in the matriculation packet that we'll need "at least one short white consultation coat". I guess I'll just be a girl scout and prepared for the day I'll need one. Chill, dude.

I didn't think I needed to ask about everything in the packet, but if you have any more insight about what they say is required but really isn't, please let me know. Give us pre-MS1's a bit of a break in our transition from neurotic pre-med to neurotic med student.

I would buy the books as you need them and not from the bookstore, I prefer Amazon. I don't remember what the packet said two years ago when I got it so I can't tell you what is and isn't required.

They haven't sent that to us yet... or any information on orientation, should be coming soon I suppose.

Just to expand on that thought, buy everything they tell you "you need" as it comes up. You may find that there's a lot you don't need or that you can get from upper classmen a heck of a lot cheaper. Some cases in point - diagnostic kits (otoscopes/opthalmoscopes), OMM tables, books, dissection kits, and dissection guides. Plus, lists of things that they give you now may change and then you're stuck with stuff you'll never use.

Faster than you'll think :luck:

Prophetic.

I open my inbox and see that my financial aid award letter is available in the Portal and another email telling me that I am missing a shot (which I'm not, I got the damn shot from my employee health office😡). Time to go through paperwork to make sure my Doc didn't write the wrong info on the paperwork and cry over the debt I'll be accumulating.

1) don't stare at the financial award letter too long - it's depressing (although not as much as being halfway done with med school and realizing it's too late now to quit because McDonald's won't pay well enough to pay back ~$100,000)

2) they will hound you like you would not believe to get your shots done - and later you'll need even more...good times

Don't buy the dissecting kit. I think most of the people in my class bought one and you just end up sharing anyways. If you have lab gloves, bring them. The bookstore won't have enough of a supply for everyone in the class. SOSA will be selling them at the beginning of the year but we haven't come up with a cost or supplier yet. BRS books are your friend. Use them. They will help a lot. You won't need First Aid before anatomy is over. You probably won't even need it in the first semester. Get it for the spring semester. You won't need a stethoscope. You get one at white coat (Littmann III). Don't buy the Pan Optic head for the ophthalmoscope. It's cool looking and fun to play with but you will never use it in H&P. I bought it because the Army reimburses me for it. That's also why I bought an OMM table.

Get to town a week before school starts. Go out and meet your classmates. We did this last year and it was a blast. You will make most of your close friends in the first week or two. If you are moving a long distance (>12 hours), buy a lot of stuff here rather than bringing it with you. Talk to current students and see if they have stuff for sale. Don't get sucked into the "aura" of Wegman's. Its a cool looking grocery store and blah blah blah but it is over priced compared to other places in town. They do have really good subs though. Find a study spot early on. There are a ton of places in Erie to study. They are also working on renovating the old fitness center in the school so it could end up being a good place to study. I haven't heard much about what they are doing there though.

The best thing I did to get ready for class was to look at a bunch of threads here about how to study in med school. I saw a bunch of different approaches and was able to try a few things once school started. Don't be afraid to change study habits/styles once school starts. You can't afford to get behind early on. If something isn't working for you, change it. I must have changed how I studied 5 times in the first week and a half.

Don't worry about the portal not being accurate. Even when I started class and was told all my stuff was in, the portal still said I was missing things. Make sure you have copies of all your records in case there is a discrepancy. You will know for sure at orientation (the Saturday before class starts) if you are missing stuff

It wasn't the portal. It was an email saying that the school was reviewing my immunizations and that I am specifically missing x-shot. I know that I got it and have paperwork saying I got it. I'll double check everything when I get home from work. I'm not worried, just annoyed.

Oh I missed where it said inbox. Yea its really annoying about the immunizations. If you have copies of the stuff then I wouldn't worry about it. I made sure to scan all my documents into my computer so I wouldn't have to worry about finding pieces of paper in my room later on.

Thanks Bleeker, you are always super helpful!! Do we really not need these white coats? (like did they tell your class to get them too and you never used them?) If so I'll return mine...

I was in Erie today to finalize a place and sign stuff @ Pastore's, and then I visited Wegman's... I don't think I'll be able to resist them and their $6 meals to go, lol!

Why do people by OMM tables? Are students not allowed in the lab outside of class to practice?

I don't remember if they said to get them for my class. I wasn't going to by them regardless. I knew that I would rather use a coat from the anatomy lab then ruin my own. After anatomy was over, I threw all my lab clothes away. A word of advice: go to Salvation Army and spend ten dollars and get an outfit. Keep it in your locker for anatomy so you don't have to bring clothes from home.

You can use the tables in the OPP lab anytime the school is open (AFAIK). I've gone up there plenty of times after business hours to use or practice on the tables. Some people just buy a table for their house so they can practice at home. Also, not everyone studies at school. There are plenty of people who study at home so if they can just practice at home on their own table, then they don't have to come to school. I study in the cafeteria so it doesn't matter to me. I have used my table a few times to HVLA my roommates C-spine. It is nice to have around.

Question... I'm living in Royal Villa next year.. I have to get internet and whatnot. What do you older students suggest? I plan on looking at Time Warner and DirectTV to find the cheapest deal, but didn't know if you guys had advice. 🙂 Thanks!

I use Verizon DSL right now. It's just under $30/month, and it's pretty fast. Plus, you can get a modem that has a wireless router built into it, which will save you a bit of money there. It wouldn't be ideal if you plan on having four or five people using it at once, but for a single person, it works extremely well.

Do you know what the listed download speed is for your DSL?

DirecTV is also the devil. I have them and got stuck with a two-year contract AND their programs are terrible. I got one of the cheaper TV (only) packages and it's still about $60/month ... I get every sports channel imaginable yet get zero local stations. It sounds like that wouldn't be a big deal, but weather.com really sucks at predicting Erie weather, and sometimes all I want is to get a real, local forecast! You basically get all the "extra" channels, but no regular ABC, NBC, FOX, etc.. things you'd think were in a "basic" package. Plus, I've heard there can be problems with the dish in the snow ... I haven't experienced it personally, but some of the Erie locals have told me that.

We just have basic internet at my house. It's $35 a month. I'm not sure of the speed though. We don't watch much tv because none of us are home often. I bought a 46" LCD in October with a built in digital converter so we bought a digital antenna. We get 5 local channels for free. It's better than nothing. We can watch football/basketball games or Simpsons/Family Guy on Sundays. We talked about getting more channels and a DVR but it's not worth it. If I wanna watch any shows, I hit up one of the four online sites I know that host tv shows. It works well because I can study for awhile and then take a meal break and watch a show while eating.
