LMU-DCOM (DeBusk COM) Discussion thread Part 2 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I love it! Its so beautiful here. Some might think it a downside that its rural, but honestly, we never have time to miss the bigger city things. Knoxville is just over an hour away when we want to get out of the area. Its amazing!

there's a difference in being rural..and being geographically boring...(flat lands, corn fields, etc)

however, DCOM rural is a scenic rural...huge difference! Can't wait

Syncope82, we saw your avatar photo of you underwater but you should have ALSO included additional photos of your party for proper context...😉

YES, THAT IS A POWER CORD FLOATING ON FLIP FLOPS... 😱

How does everyone feel about the location of the school and the town that it's in?

This town is just what I needed. I want to be very focused on my books for these first two years and we are devoid of most distractions here. At the same time, as long as it isn't cloudy, the view is picturesque. Driving home from lab around 6 last semester I remember seeing some unbelievable sunsets. I'm yet to take advantage of the star-watching, but it's unbelievable how many you can see at night.

The only thing you really miss are some good restaurants and hopefully that article will inspire more of them to move to this area. The tricky part for a lot of restaurants is the dry county laws here. A lot of them make money off of alcohol. Still, a place like panera would be a valuable addition. If you really get desperate for something more, Knoxville is well within reach too.

lol..yea i should have..but it was a outdoor heated pool in Breckenridge, CO with 5 degree weather...so all above-water photos have too much steam

and what in the world is going on with the power supply in the pool? 😱

how many places are there that allow you to sit in and study? like a bookkstore or a coffee shop? Thanks

The Wal-Mart in Middlesboro (across from the Holiday Inn Express) had a suitable furniture section with chairs and desks where I reviewed my notes prior to the DCOM interview...

Hungry for a snack during study time? Head on over to the tasty snack aisle. Bored? Go to Walmart electronics display & play the Wii and PS3/xBox if Nascar and Froggie are hoggin' them in the OMM lab. 😀

Hey, I'm resourceful.

So I know at my interview a few of us were told to not expect to hear anything until at least 10 days after our interview.... I'm on 8 right now and it's almost unbearable! Then the fact that 10 days falls on Friday and I may have to wait the weekend...

Will there be a group at the Oasis tomorrow? I'm not interviewing. I've already sent in my deposit, but I've been thinking about heading out that way tomorrow to have a bit more time looking around the area and getting ideas about housing. My interview trip was very quick. So, if there is a get together tomorrow, I'll be in for it.

You must have been in my interview group.... I haven't heard anything either. 😕 Who told you it takes 10 days? I thought Dr. Stowers was calling people today. I was just assuming that I was rejected.... this is killing me! :boom:

yea that is funny..and quite scary after watching syriana

also..in regards to the under water photo.....I would really recommend getting the Olympus 770 SW...it is $300...but it is waterproof up to 33ft deep..shock proof up to a 5ft drop, freeze proof, crush proof.....

if you're in the market for a new digicam..this is it! I've been waiting for a camera that you can pretty much use anywhere for a long time

ps: I don't work or know anyone that works at olympus 😛

suit by all means.

charcoal or navy are your best bets - its not a funeral/wedding/formal event, so black is not a good idea. white shirt, light blue if you gotta. dont be too wild, but if your tie has a little color thats fine (its probably good if it matches your get up), just dont look like a clown. best of luck

so, what should a guy wear to an interview? i know it sounds stupid, but I'm not sure whether I should wear a suit or a sports coat with slacks. thanks.

so not wearing a suit is a bad idea, right?

My guy Lamont is right with the suit colors, but black is perfectly acceptable - so do not go out a buy a new suit if you don't need to. Many, many people (males and females) wear black. Also, many people wear other shirt colors than white. I've seen everything including white, red, blue, green, and all the shades of those colors. I wore a burnt orange color shirt, Jerry Garcia tie with orange, red, yellow, and black, and a black suit. Now, I'm not saying to show up in a white suit looking like John Travolta from Saturday Night Fever, but you don't need to be afraid to show some personality thru your clothes. I think if you wear clothes that fit who you are, but still professional, then you will be more comfortable, which only helps during an interview. Again, to be redundant - it has to be professional.

Even if you have a traditional suit (which you should - black, charcoal, or navy) and a white shirt, you can wear a fun, professional tie, don't be afraid to if you want to wear one. I think it is refreshing to see.

These ties (Jerry Garcia) are extremely professional (a couple of our doctors here wear them), but very fun......http://www.abcneckties.com/jerrygarcia.html I have the one called Emerging Elephant and I love it....and I have received many complements.

IMO, these are the things I absolutely would not wear to an interview, given that one is wearing a normal suit and dress shoes:

- A doctor/medical tie
- anything that says Dr. [insert your name]
- T-shirt that looks like a suit (although I'd laugh, then have you go change)
- Tie that has to do with a major sporting team (if you have a nice, professional tie from your college, I think that would be kinda cool, BUT it has to be professional)
- Anything with a clown
- Neon shirt/tie

Just my $0.02.

Yeah I was the one that goes to MSU lol
After we filled out our survey one of the guys asked a lady from the office- it may have been Janette.

All she said was it'll take somewhere between 10 days and 2 weeks- so don't give up hope yet!

There will definitely be pizza going tomorrow, but I'm not sure exactly who will be there. I can't go because we are doing an International Food Night! If you are looking for housing, you might want to try contacting my landlords. They are really great people and have stuff that comes open all of the time. They have several med students that rent from them already. If you watched the videos that were posted earlier, they are the ones that just opened the coffee shop! You can PM me for their number if you'd like.

At the moment there's a coffee shop in Middlesboro that just opened up and it's AMAZING! My landlords just opened it about a week ago and they've got 2 study rooms made up and a conference room as well. So you can go to those places if you want. There's another coffee shop on the TN side going to Speedwell that is also delicious. They don't have any separate rooms to go to but they're open longer and actually serve sandwiches and whatnot. Other than that there's really just the DCOM building and the LMU library. Sometimes we drive down to the panera in Knoxville for a change of scenery and that's always nice.

Is this a different shop than the one that Piratesse mentioned previously?

Yup. Its a nice place as well.. I'm biased, of course, because my landlords own the one in M-boro and its only about 5 blocks away from where I live now.

Couldn't tell ya if you're talking about the campus library...I've never gone over there to study...

But, I think it's ok...as I know some people go over there from time to time...

I ALMOST broke out a special tie today, but had no reason to dress up....so, it might have to make an appearance next week with the unprecedented 3 days in a row of "professional dress".

Halloweenie...got any idea what I might have been breaking out and why? (I'll give you a hint) 😉

Now, that might have been mean, but it's gonna be nice having another Big 12 person around the school...around here, if it didn't happen in the SEC, it didn't happen... 🙂

So, are the higher ups at debusk receptive to the idea of universal health care? I figure they are focused on increasing the number of primary care physicians in rural areas, so probably?

No I don't think the are interested in ruining the healthcare system, quite the opposite

I'm not sure. I think that the faculty and student body will be split on the issue at any medical school. What you should really be looking for is a school where the higher ups are respectful and tolerant of views that differ from their own. There is nothing worse than an agenda pusher. I see it as a red flag when interviewers ask you a question that has to do with personal opinion, ethics or morals (like a question on universal healthcare) and then make faces or argue with you about your response.

im sure they are respectful and tolerant...but have you seen what it would do to the infrastructure of medicine? we just cant support it AND hope to have a remotely responsive health care system. it would ruin EM, flood FP's, and make the lives of all of us generally miserable. its a great idea in theory - but build 3x more hospitals at the minimum, hire 5x more docs, 10x more nurses and support staff, fund everything, and THEN lets talk universal health care. just not feasible. i dont see this as a red flag, i see it as an educated opinion - and they will only make that face if you didnt accurately and intelligently defend your opinion. not to flame ya here, but im being pretty honest about the process. they arent your friend - they are trying to make sure you are worth their time. best of luck to you.

I've heard that argument from so many people. I think that everyone looks at the way universal healthcare has been implemented in Canada, and just assumes thats how it has to be. I think there are ways to make it work. And, medicine is a public service. Your intentions should be to serve the people, and honestly there is no reason that anyone shouldn't have access to proper care. "Make our lives miserable", why, because you'd be making a little less money, have to work a little harder? Honestly, I'm disgusted with the attitude and views I've found among medical students these days. All these people are talking about how they want to work with underserved and disadvantaged populations, yet they consistently vote against the programs that provide that population with the basic means of living. It's so hypocritical.
Look to Paul Farmer. That man is an inspiration if I've ever seen one.

I'm not trying to flame you either. We just have different views. Lets just drop it here cause I can see this getting a little heated and out of control.

I agree with you, Pam. There has to be some way to meet health care needs.. I just wish I knew the answer.. Thumbs up from me to you.👍

I asked this question last week, but didn't get a response. I have been complete at DCOM for at leat 2 weeks, but haven't heard anything as far as a rejection/interview goes. Does anyone know approximately when I should expect something? Are they on schedule, behind, something else I am not aware of?? Also, I am assuming that any correspondense comes via email since the secondary prompt does. Is this correct?

I got a phone call from Jody I believe saying I was selected for an interview, I picked a date over the phone and then I got an email from Janette with all the interview info. I believe I got my phone call about a week and a half after I was complete, and this was in mid-december. Hope that helps!

Also, to anyone else, I heard the adcom was meeting yesterday.. does anyone know if he'll be make any happy phone calls today? The suspense is killing me...

I got the acceptance call this morning!!! Good thing he only left a message because I was screaming into the phone 😛 He would have revoked it based on how ridiculous I sounded. Hallelujah, God is good! 😀 Looking forward to meeting you all in person soon!

i tell you. if they didn't have beasley, the wouldn't have nuthin. 😉

don't make me break out the jayhawk, you baker fool, you. 😀 just wait til they get to the phog.....

I'm going to get in one thing - dont drop the whole "im disgusted with this attitude" business on me or any medical student. you dont apparently see the whole picture - I will have a life to live. Medicine is an interest in my life, not THE interest. Don't tell me that I should work 22 12 hour shifts a month so everyone can have their turn at getting fixed. the specialty i'm considering, emergency medicine, would be hit the hardest. I love the idea of helping people - but i dont enjoy the idea of sacrificing every single minute i have for it, nobody would no matter what they say. I'd like to die after 40 and have some sense of a life outside of work. You have some pretty unrealistic ideas here, as nice as they sound, they are not economically or infrastructurally feasible. if you want to discuss this in further, PM me. I'll gladly discuss, just know you wont win this one. good luck in your application process.

I have to agree. I think that there could be a 'more' universal type of plan that could be made to make sure the poorest (who aren't poor enough to qualify for governmental assistance already) and least insured people in our country have access to affordable and reliable healthcare. The system is horrible right now and needs fixed. I think that insurance companies are getting a prettyposh deal right now and something needs to be done about it. I don't know what but I am definitely interested in America trying to come up with a better solution bc the one we have right now isn't working.

Hey Lamont, I had a question about the ER thing, Im doing some reseach on universal healthcare so I will be prepared when they ask me about it, but from what I've read it will actually solve the ER overcrowding problem? Right now the ER is over crowded with uninsured people who go there for non-emerginceis because they have no where else to go and know they cant be turned away (I had to tak emy BF to the ER last year and was amazed at the 7 hour wait and I also volunteer at a free clinic and alot of the people say they go there too). But if we had universal healthcare these people would have a regular doctor they could go to and wouldn't be goign to the ER all the time. This is just what I read in an AMSA publication so I'd like to get your side of the view. I want to be prepared to be able to explain both sides because I've seen alot of interview questions about giving the pros and cons of universal healthcare. Thanks!

That's pretty funny bc I actually just came back to ask the exact same question. It would seem to me that the ER would have less uninsured people coming in and a larger % of their patients would be 'paying' in some form or another rather than people who know they can just get the hospital to cover the costs for them. I'm not sure, maybe there is something I am not thinking about.

This is a matter of personal opinion. I have mine, you have yours. They're equally valid. I think one thing you do need to realize is that medicine is not just a career, it's a lifestyle. If medicine isn't THE interest in your life, you will be devoured during your internship, residency and fellowship if you choose to do one. Unless you all are willing to be open to hearing others views without attacking, I suggest we drop this right now.

I think that there could be a 'more' universal type of plan that could be made to make sure the poorest (who aren't poor enough to qualify for governmental assistance already) and least insured people in our country have access to affordable and reliable healthcare.

I think most altruistic individuals in medicine agree with that statement but jumping to the emotional extreme commonly referred to as "socialization" is not only nearsighted but ludicrous. Pamolive was calling others (LauraDO) "narrow"? Please.

Sure, socialized medicine is barely "working" in the UK and The Great White North but "oh-no" let's not measure the tangibles based on a naive and idealistic perception; the quality of medicine delivered is generally poor as is the timeframe for service when compared to medicine in the United States. If we go "full federal intervention" with medicine, a private fee-for-service arena will surely open here just as has blossomed in the UK (mainly UK dental but UK medical is following suit) thus facilitating a huge disparity in healthcare provision based on affordability. I don't call that a "win" for healthcare necessarily.

There's a widely-held stance that the "baby steps" we have taken toward socialization through managed healthcare over the years has been to the detriment of proper medical practice. This has left a number of physicians "hog tied" in the way their training and conviction dictate that medicine be practiced. The insurance companies and managed healthcare entities are at the crux of this issue and their lobby will not be swayed so don't count on socialization any time soon.

Personally, I'm not endorsing any one cadidate but one individual 'in primary running' has successfully implemented group-purchase insurance (to significantly reduce cost) in order to provide state-wide coverage for citizens. This idea could work on a regional or even a national level, so that's one reasonable and logical solution.

Needless to say, I also don't think society should take a hit for those who decide not to use foresight with regard to the healthcare needs of themselves or their household because they are irresponsible or misprioritize. Quite simply, I don't think the system should be overhauled with "socialized" based on the sole premise that some members of society rank healthcare below some other materialistic desire and think the federal government owes it to them for whatever reason.

Carry on, Lamont. 👍
