LMU-DCOM (DeBusk COM) Discussion thread Part 2 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
are the thinkpads going to be tablets?

It is my understanding that they will be notebooks. Also the money saved in replacement pens alone will offset the cost of replacing our classes computers. This is all still in the working out phase so nothing set in stone. This is what is in the works and what they are looking at for our class and yours.

Please tell me you are joking with this question.....PLEASE?!?!?!?! 🙄 :boom:

I think everyone knows that you guys/gals already have tablets, but to be fair IBM DOES have both tablets and notebooks 😉

I apologize in advance if any of these questions have previously been answered, I actually HAVE read pretty much this entire forum, but I can't remember what was covered for sure.

My interview is this Friday, 2/29...yay for leap years!
But anyways, just a few questions about the actual interview:

1) How much walking do we really do? And, do we do any walking outside? (this is a shoes related question)
2) Am I supposed to bring a notebook or anything like that with me? I know some schools specifically tell you to bring one, but I haven't seen anything about that for LMU-DCOM.
3) If I have a letter from the doctor I work for that has not yet been sent (he just finished it today) would it be weird or inappropriate to bring the letter with me to the interview? Would it be better to just send it in the mail ASAP and hope they get it before making any decisions?

Thanks for any info!!! And hopefully I will see some of you on Friday (and/or Thursday night). 😛

*Anyone out there who will also be interviewing this Friday let me know!!*

First of all, good luck!! It was really laid back. We didn't do any walking outside really but you will go up and down the stairs a lot! Make sure you won't be wearing shoes that slip off easily. You shouldn't need a notebook. They provide you with a folder with the info you need and a pen. Any additional notes I wanted to take I just wrote on the papers. I would think it would be weird for you to bring in your own LOR. It seems much more professional for it to be mailed. I would just have him send it ASAP. :luck:

I hand delivered one of my letters right to Jody last year. I had brought it with me because I had just gotten it the day before, and I knew I could deliver it faster than it would have taken in the mail. Jody was going over the completeness of our files, and asked if I had already sent it.. so I told him I just happened to have it with me if I could give it to him. He didn't mind at all, and I got acceptance two weeks later.

Even if you sent it regular mail it would be there before they made a decision, but if you sent it priority mail today or tomorrow it would get there by friday. I think it's better to have it sent, but if you bring it I think it would be less awkward if it were in a sealed envelope- maybe they don't care if you have seen the letter or not, but some schools do. I didn't get to see any of my LOR, since I signed something from my pre-health office saying I waived my right to see them, I just had to hope they said good things 🙂

1) You guys will do a fair amount of walking, but nothing outside. Like eel said, you will be going up and down stairs, so be ready for that. The building tour lasts about 30 minutes, which will be the most amount of walking you do at one time. I don't think you'll need to bring an extra pair of shoes or anything like that.
2) You don't need to bring anything, but most people usually bring something, usually a leather folder with a notepad inside. The biggest thing I used it for was writing down questions I had for the school, that way I wouldn't forget them.
3) As for your LOR, I would call DCOM admissions and ask. I brought my updated transcripts to my interview and they took them from me. I don't think it would be an issue to hand deliver it, but make sure it is sealed in an envelope. But call first to find out instead of guessing.

I think everyone knows that you guys/gals already have tablets, but to be fair IBM DOES have both tablets and notebooks 😉

I really don't mean to be an a$$, but every single post about computers on this thread has been in reference to a tablet. I encourage all of you to ask questions, but don't be afraid to try to find the answer first. Do you need to do that all of the time....no....but sometimes it helps. If you look and can't find the answer, then ask, regardless of the question and if its been asked before. And to expect anyone to read thru this entire thread for an answer to a question is crazy...noboby has that kind of time to read 1600+ posts  But all of us enjoy answering questions and giving you all the info needed to know about DCOM and make a decision about which med school is right for you. I think this is the primary reason why the DCOM thread has been so successful b/c med students and pre-meds all contribute to the thread. Plus we all know how to have a good time when we all need a few laughs 😀

and to switch gears........

Honestly, I would be very disappointed and surprised if we switched to the notebooks (in reference to shasta's post). I love having the tablet and it makes taking notes very easy, and I know that the folks here at school are proud of the students having them. I prefer handwriting notes on powerpoint slides, but hate the bulk of numerous binders, notebooks, etc.....so the tablet is the best of both worlds. I understand factoring in the cost of pens, but there are ways around that I think, such as making the 1st replacement free, then each additional replacement for a fee....as well as keep track of who is getting replacements. Perhaps the people who have needed so many are doing something wrong and causing them to malfunction. Just some of my ideas. But I really do hope they stick with the tablets.

if a pen malfunctions...i don't believe there should be a fee at all..this should all be covered under warranty...unless, of course, you snap your pen in half on your own accord.

LMU should have a contract worked out with gateway, where they give them 10 extra HD's, 10 extra pens, etc, to keep on hand in case of any failure, so it can be replaced the same day...lenovo does that for the company I work for. When something breaks (and it never does, unless an employee drops his or her computer..and even then there is usually no damage), we just replace the HD, or keyboard with the extra's we have on hand, and just submit the claim to lenovo at a later time...it works out for the best since there is no delay in something breaking and getting it replaced

Hi HippieChick!

Tell me about it! Its too late for today 🙁 and I'm getting really worried too! I don't know how many times I've refreshed this page to see if anyone posts anything!:scared: Didn't Paul say he would meet with Dr. Stowers on Monday and he usually calls on Tuesday?

I was hoping to hear something so I wouldn't have to go on my next interview, but I guess I'll be leaving tomorrow for NY (TOUROCOM interview). I don't know if it will impress the same way as DCOM, but I'll try to go with an open mind 😛 And I've got interviews lined up for the next two weeks too (TOURO-NV and KCUMB). This decision making stuff is making me nervous and I haven't even been accepted anywhere yet 😕

By the way, did you go to your interview at PNWU? I'm a little nervous about applying there. Did you like it?

I wouldnt worry too much yet. Especially if no one else has posted an acceptance. My interview class was all worried because they said they would try to let us know on Tuesday and no one got a call that day. Wednesday morning though, a lot of people got phone calls. Hopefully you guys will hear something then.

They do have a case of pens on hand to replace on the spot, at one point I saw like 50 in the office. The point here is more to the fact that the pens break...often...very often. I know some people who are on their 10th pen, someone who is on their second computer and when I was in there the other day there were 4 notebooks stacked up on the desk. Clearly these tablets are not durable enough to handle our needs. In a great big shout out to the school (especially the tech guys) they realize this and have bent over backwards to handle our tech problems and are working now to eliminate this problem for ALL students next year. This is typical of DCOM dedication and one reason I love this school so much. 👍

On the tablet vs notebook issue, the Thinkpad I saw in the office was a tablet and they made mention of how much better the Thinkpad pens work. That leads me to believe next years computers will be tablets.

HippieChick and DrZoom I'm crossing my fingers for you (and everyone else who is waiting to hear back). :luck::luck::luck::luck:

I bet you'll get the call tomorrow, so keep your phone on in the morning! I live in CA and my call came really early and woke me up! 😉

Thanks for the updates...in fact, I am going to forward on reports from my company, which I have permission to do, on to DCOM to see how much money can actually be saved by owning thinkpads over dells (which are better than gateways IMO). Our IT dept keeps a track of all costs associated with computer issues and thus far, with the new thinkpads, costs have been much less than owning Dells. So, I also have empirical proof to substantiate the reasoning to switch to thinkpads...

I have nothing better to do..so why not

In regards to abuse, I am sure a medical student is very demanding..ie: shoving it into a backpack with books in it..accidentally dropping your backpack (forgetting that you had ure notebook in there)..etc....and this doesn't even count for the 10+ hours of use it gets every day...and every day being transported from home/dorm to class...to library..back to home..etc

hey all, I am interviewing soon and was wondering if anyone could give me the breakdown of a typical interview day at dcom...

greeting, tour, etc.......how many interviewers we have, are they docs or students or both....

thanks guys!

i leave the thread for like a day...and we are back on computers. where is mitch when i need him? please kill the computer banter. please. please. please. as long as you can take notes and get on facebook, what else do you need? dont tell me you are going to do some big time work on this thing, you dont have time for that. facebook and studying - thats it. done. go draw some mustaches on people's facebook pictures or something if you are that bored.

good luck to everyone awaiting phone calls and interviewing, I hope it works out for you

ahh..the ignorance..😉....as long as it has 4 wheels, engine, and a windshield...what other car would you need? 😉

dont tell me you are going to do some big time work on this thing, you dont have time for that.

are you sure? i don't have anything else to do...im done with school...i've been accepted....i work at company where only 25% of my time is actually spent doing work...the other 75%? don't ask me...i sometimes even take naps.....so im in limbo-land right now and all i have is time 😉

and really..it takes all but 1 hour to do...what' it going to hurt? perhaps, you are overreacting?

or are you just afraid the class of 2012 is going to end up with better computers than the class of 2011? and you will spend all of your time gawking at our nice computers

fyi...I'm just joking around

How the attitudes will change in 6-8 months...I cant wait. I was in your shoes at one point in time. Enjoy your precious free time man, i kissed that stuff goodbye long long again unfortunately. all im saying is cant we talk about something else? I feel like we are tooling it up pretty bigtime here with all this computer talk - dont people have interests outside of computers? what is the coolest NON-MEDICAL experience everyone here has had?

Well I guess this could be considered medically related but I didn't consider it that way because it was personal. Sooooo, I would have to say the coolest experience I have had is giving birth, twice. Oh but after the epidural of course.

Kind of medically related, but we had two midshaft femur fractures up on the hill while I was ski patrolling last week. One was head downhill in a ditch with a busted nose and blood everywhere and the other was head downhill against a 4x4 on the side of the slope. We also had the usual twisted knees, fractured clavicles, boot top tib/fib fracture, but the femurs were something not experienced everyday. I've also flown more people this year than in the last five combined, and thats pretty cool.

The coolest thing I had happen to me at the ER when I worked there was getting to do a hot unload from lifestar with a patient they were flying in. I felt like I was in an episode of M.A.S.H. 😀.

Completely unrelated to medicine, I just got back from Lake Tahoe after snowboarding for about a week. I <3 powder....... *drool*.....

As for the computers, I dont care what kind we get. It will probably stay in my backpack most of the day unless I have to use it for one of those quizzes. I plan on sitting next to prions and using my mac to watch the powerpoints and take notes. It's superior in all ways. Especially when its running the Parallels program that runs windows faster than any PC I've ever been on.

On a side note..... Its snowing!!!! Who wants to go hiking and take to dogs out to play in the snow and get all wet and tired? 😀

Anyone?

OK....how about golf??? How many of the newbies are golfers??? I would be willing to put together a small get together at one of the local courses where we could play a round and just hang out before school starts. Maybe sometime in late July???

I'm interested in golf. But I suck. Like I shoot a 68 on the front nine suck. I've really "played" once. What is the status of the driving range there, btw? 🙂

Yeah, I suck at golf too. I didn't know it was possible to swing and miss that stupid ball so many times in a row.

Any bowling around Harrogate?

A funny experience I had a few weeks ago while snowboarding:
My friend, who is a novice snowboarder, thought it would be fun to take a jump on a black diamond terrain park. We waited at the top of the hill to watch. A few minutes later we see this guy come flying down from behind another hill, hit a ramp, and start flapping his arms like he was trying to fly...gravity won and he landed flat on his back. I didn't realize it was my friend until I saw him crawling off the other side of the hill!! He wasn't hurt, so it was hilarious:laugh:

Another semi-medically related funny story:

Does anyone watch the show Manswers? It answers random dumb questions that guys tend to come up with. The question a couple of weeks back was how to get drunk faster. It turns out that pouring a single beer into your butt is the same as drinking 22 beers withing 20 minutes!

Computers were brought up because someone else brought it up and I responded

of course everything will change in 6-8 mo....no one saying it won't...trust me ...i know my 6-8 mo left are very precious...and again, I am enjoying my precious free time...in fact..i don't know what else I can do to enjoy it more...

Don't get me wrong...I appreciate all of the advice from the class of 2011..but..come on? now we're told what not to talk about on the boards? I believe the topic has shifted numerous, numerous times.....from quotes from movies, hiking...to general lmu discussions..to just crazy talk.......topics evolve..and if there is a certain topic you do not like...perhaps it's better to keep quiet then complain?

perhaps a little overreaction? if you hate computers that much....you are in a world of trouble once you become a physician....computers will be your life...every time you see a patient..you're going to be holding one in your hand...better get used to the computer talk now

you ski patrol????? lucky!!!! I have always been envious of ski patrollers....

I would in a sec if i was down there.

my friends tried to get me into golfing...but it never happened...i can't see myself spending $100 to hit a ball around 😛

But I'm definitely willing to give it a try again...if you can set something up..i'm in!

Apparently, rectal enemas utilizing beer make for better conversation! 😀
BTW - that was funny Hoss. Who would have known?

One computer comment....I think the Thinkpads would be perfect if the screen were larger. I love the large screen of the Gateways.

As for coolest moments? Not sure if this takes the cake, but there was an intoxicating evening spent under the Eiffel Tower in the rain!

Hey people who are at LMU.. nascar et al. Whats the club situation looking like down there? Have you guys started any and do you have like student government etc?

Just looking for some info on stuff to do while I'm down there.

On another note, I want to take a trip down to visit more of the surrounding area after I graduate college. Anybody willing to let me stay on their couch for a few days?

Rose,

I wanna hear more about your ski patrolling experience! 🙂

i believe the list of clubs was posted on here just a little while back...may have to go back a few pages though

Oh, and I appear to have lived through the "Blizzard of '08" of East TN. That was pretty exciting.

Good lord, they played "Let it snow" on the radio this morning....I think we got a whole inch of snow in most places!

So...what other schools do is set up a big brother/sister type thing between the 1st and 2nd year med school class, so one can come to him or her for any questions/concerns, etc.

does anyone know if dcom has these plans?...I think it would be a great idea to pair up the 1st years with the 2nd years...hence..big brother/sister

any comments on this?

These should be all of them. There may be more next year once you guys get there b/c clubs must meet a minimum requirement of people, and I know some did not make it. Thus, this list can, and most likely, will expand next year.

Yes, this is the plan

Hey Sync - I recently did the day/night skiing out at Keystone; it was awesome.

What's the scoop at Breckenridge? I heard there are alot of "take it easy" runs, which are nice. I started out boarding long ago at Lake Tahoe and in Utah but I recently cut over to skis. I'm definitely a convert (to skis) and was wondering what Breck is like for new skiers...

I am game for a little golf before school starts...

Also, does school start at the same time for both classes?? For some reason, i get the idea that first year student's have to be there earlier than everyone else?

does anyone like ping-pong?? When i heard that dcom got a pool table (which is great fun) i immediately thought about table-top ping pong (ping pong tables that fit on top of pool tables)... Is this be a possibility? I have one of these at home that worked great!

All the best to everyone that is interviewing and waiting to hear back.

The show was hilarious too...two guys are at a bar, they order a beer, one guy says, "Bottoms up", gets on the floor with his feet hiked in the air and begins "consumption."
I thought it would be some funny bit of random knowledge after all the serious computer talk.

So, I'm curious, what happens with these clubs meetings? Is there anything special that goes on besides being able to say "I am a member of this or that club?" and having something to put on your residency app? Do any of these clubs maintain a club website? Is there a directory of the club presidents?
