LMU-DCOM (DeBusk COM) Discussion thread Part 2 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Yeah, so what is it you wanted me to do? Because I'm now powerless and must do anything you ask 🙂.

I'm not sure yet... but it's good to know I have you wrapped around my little finger 😀

So, do you think it is worth it to call to check on status (to show my interest) if I don't have an interview invite, yet? Should I just let it be and wait?

Hey guys,

I just want to let you know DCOM lowered the price on the student apartments for next year. They are going to be as follows:

1 room = $550
2 room = $700

Thought y'all would like to know!!! I'm sure you will hear something from the school either by email or snail mail soon.

i think i am going to change my request to the 2 room unit now. whats another 2k/yr for double the space.

Hmmm...good to know, I wonder if I should do a 2 room now too... Thanks 🙂

FYI to those of you waiting on the wait list, I was accepted off the wait list in the first week of June. I interviewed in March due to a very late application. I do remember one person posting last summer that got accepted the first part of July as well. Take home message (sorry 2011'ers I had to throw that in :meanie:) being put on the wait list is not a decline and you should show interest to the admin people but fall short of pestering them to death. Also get your stuff prepared to move that way when you get the call you don't have to run around like a chicken with your head cut off. I had movers picked out, boxes lined up, etc.
On a final note I just have to add my two cents in on MedWar (the medical adventure race). I was a team mate with the Piratesse and another girl and it was incredible. I would love to see a strong DCOM showing next year and I challenge some of you other COM's to show up because we were the only COM there!! Yes the gauntlet has been thrown down to you other COM'ers that visit us here!!!

That's very good news!! I'm currently signed up for a single, but the two- room one is very tempting. I just don't have any furnishings for the living room area (no couch or anything) if I end up changing to the two-room. Hmmm...guess I'd have to go shopping

why do you think they dropped the rent? b/c a lot of people weren't signing up? ahaha, it was kinda ridiculous before.

I'm pretty sure they're furnished already...

I'm confused now...I got a letter around a month or so ago stating that they raised the rent and because of that I had to resign my housing agreement which I just sent in around a week ago....

"For the 2008/2009 school year a one-room unit rents for $650 a month and a two-room unit rents for $900 a month."

so they did the lower it back to what it was before the raise? and will we have to fill the housing agreement again?
😕

why do you think they dropped the rent? b/c a lot of people weren't signing up? ahaha, it was kinda ridiculous before.

Yeah, because no body wants to live there! It's still a little ridiculous, IMO.

Rose is paying $650 for a 2 bedroom, 2 full bathroom apartment (with a real sized kitchen mind you) and he has it all to himself. If DCOM lowers the rent to the market value of the area, I'm sure more people would want to live there.

Yeah we probably will need to fill out another housing agreement.

I think it's an okay price now, especially considering it includes most furnishings (so I don't have to haul a bunch of stuff 😀) and internet, cable, and utilities.

ya but keep in mind that all utilities are included with student apartments....by private housing you will have seperate water/phone/electricity/gas/cable bill/ISP bill, etc....that adds on a $150 per month right there

No I was in Arizona so it wasn't a small move for me, plus I have a family so I had more than me to move and the dorms weren't an option to me. You can call after interviews are done and find out your place on the list and see how they expect to organize the waitlist. That might give you a better idea.

I hope this helps!!!

Good luck to all waiting :luck::luck::luck:

I have a lead on a house for rent close to the school.

Its 2 bedroom 1 bath farm house 5 miles from LMU on hwy 63. It has well water so no water bills (the owner says the water is good). It has a new central air and heat unit and she's asking $480 a month. Her contact info is [email protected] and her number is 423-871-0105.

Could those of you on the facebook class of 2012 group post this there as well? I have not seen the place but I'm sure she will e-mail pix to you if you want them.

Happy hunting...

Well I found some places in New Tazewell. They are brand new 2 and 3 bedroom condos. Fairly decent size. From what the owner told me there are a few LMU people there. I did catch a black Mercedes sitting in a garage with the license plate "DCOM" I thought that was reassuring. Send me a pm if anyone is interested, I can give you the name and number of the guy building them. I have some pics of the place, I'll send them or post them here if no one cares about that (they are fairly big).

are you sure that's not Dr. Stower's car, or one of the other DCOM elites?
I'm not sure who's car it was, but it was sitting in a garage in my little subdivision.

EDIT: it was one of the larger mercedes. I didn't catch the model, I just thought it was a very cool license plate.

👍 Its gonna be a little more expensive for me, but the fact that I'll have a real sized kitchen (I love cooking) and more than one room is what I'm excited about. I'll have plenty of space for an office in my "second room" 🙂laugh: thats for you prions and cassrae... 😉) plus I'll have an actual living room and bedroom. Its just better for me. YMMV.

Yes, that adds a little, but I'm holding off on cable/internet at first, and I know I wont use much power by myself, I'm pretty good at that. So after the first month or so, I'm gonna look at cable and internet. Maybe we can get one or two for the building or something and share it. I'm not against that. But whatever.

larger=more expensive....so i'm thinking definetly dcom elite..

now...are we saying that the license plate is actually DCOM...or it is just a dcom placcard over the plate?

Awww Ry you're so sweet for thinking of me and Prions...

And yes I was kinda wondering about possibly sharing cable and internet.. or at least internet maybe? Like if we got a wireless router or something?

Try to get a wireless-N router...this way you can all share it without losing connection as much 😉

No, it was a real license plate, the actual "number" on the plate was DCOM.

Good, well, at least I'm not the only one. You and and Prions should get the apartment above me that way we can share and it will work the best. A wireless router would be perfect. If you get a mac before school we can use an airport network 🙂. (get a mac 😉)

Lexus , it is our Do/PhD/MPH's car. At least if I remember correctly it is a Lexus.

any new word on our laptops?

Nothing definite. I think they are still working on the contracts, etc. from what I heard yesterday. I don't think we can go wrong with any of the models they are looking at from what I've seen. If they switch away from the current ones the only "problem" I foresee is getting used to looking at a smaller screen. I'd be happier to hear that Microsoft had come out with reliable software (see OneNote). It's great, but the glitches get annoying.

Uh oh! You're going to go through SDN withdrawal!! :meanie:

If I'm not mistaken, they are given out on the first day of orientation, so you at least have a little time to figure out how it works before classes actually start

If it is similar to the schedule we had, you will get them on Friday morning (orientation starts Wednesday). But things may be different, I don't know. But you will still have the weekend to get used to them. Like I've said before, the learning curve isn't steep on these, at all, so no need to worry. And I'm sure clubs will have seminars on how to use certain software, i.e. OneNote.

Hello DCOM folks - Syncope82, since you're amazingly on the topic of laptops again 😉, be sure to check out the "what laptop are you bringing" thread. I've been working with Lenovo and wanted your input when you get a chance... thanks

It is my understanding (I asked the tech guys about this awhile ago) you will be getting your laptops toward the beginning of orientation so you will have some time to play with them and get used to them before your first lecture. You will need that cause the first lecture a wild ride. Anyway you will also be getting 3 hours of instruction instead of the 1 hour we got just before our first lecture as well. This shows they listen to your input on feedback at DCOM...what an awesome school!

I also got that feeling when I interviewed and they were asking my opinion on tablets during the interview...I'm glad to see that it really is that way

Just out of curiousity, are there are still spaces left in the student apartments for the fall? Thanks

So, I filled out my fafsa a while back and haven't heard anything back from DCOM. I read in the matriculation packet that they are supposed to send our loan package, but I havent heard anything back. you guys hear anything?

I haven't gotten anything back, I sent mine in back in January. So we probably are not missing anything, I hope.
