LMU-DCOM (DeBusk COM) Discussion thread Part 2 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
hey all! i finally decided to join sdn but have been trying to follow ur posts for the past week or so 🙂 i interviewed in march and received my wait-list letter in the second week of april 🙁 although not the news i hoped for, i'm still happy that i still have a chance. i really hope to join the class of 2012 at dcom and meet everyone!

while i'm waiting, i was hoping to complete some of the immunization requirements. can somebody please let me know wat i should have complete? i think i'm up-to-date on mostly everything..

i've submitted my fafsa already, but is there anything else i should do while waiting?

Okay, to give you all someting to read - but nothing exciting . . .

So PinkDoc, my hubby interviewed April 11 and we were told the last interviews were to be on April 25th and the committee was to meet on May 1 and we should expect news by the 4th or 5th.

So tomorrow is the day (assuming they stay on schedule) and things should really start rolling!:banana:

I was really hoping that Nascardoc could get the scoop on how many seats are left at this point in time . . .

Ok trying to remember off the top of my head. But you need a varciella (chickenpox) titer, a rubella titer, a ruboela titer, and a hepititis B titer (it's a specific one that I cant remember the name of), then you need an up to date tetanus shot, a new TB test, and a urine 10 panel test. Plus you need a physical. I think that is it but I could very well be forgetting something.

(Oprah.com) -- What's the best way to hang on to what you learn? New memory research has answers.
art.brain.jpg

Cramming for exams in a haze of No-Doz is the kind of activity one can only hope to outgrow. But demands for retaining new information hardly ended with graduation -- there are speeches to be delivered, professional certifications, boards, and bars to pass. Should you pull all-nighters? Study till you drop?
Now, four ways to remember more.
Space out
If possible, always try to break up learning into separate sessions, rather than studying in a nose-to-the-grindstone marathon, according to Doug Rohrer, Ph.D, associate professor of psychology at the University of South Florida, who has conducted several experiments in this area.
"Say you take French eight hours a day for two weeks -- language immersion courses yield excellent performance right after the class. However, if you want to know French in the long run, you're much better off spending that same amount of time distributed across a semester or a year."
When you space out learning like this, he says, "you can have up to 100 percent more retention."
Don't Miss

Sleep on it
Hit the books; then hit the pillow. That will help the brain lock in what you learned. Even naps are beneficial, according to a Harvard study in which subjects who took a 90-minute snooze after learning a task performed 50 percent better over a 24-hour period than the napless group.
"Sleep after learning helps solidify memory," says Susumu Tonegawa, Ph.D, a Nobel Prize-winning professor of biology and neuroscience at the Picower Institute for Learning and Memory at MIT.
According to animal studies, when you perform a task, the brain cells fire in a certain sequence. If you then fall asleep, the same cells automatically fire in an identical sequence without being distracted or disrupted by incoming visual stimuli. That, Tonegawa says, "solidifies the synapses, which in turn helps to strengthen the information as a memory."
Don't overlearn
Once you've remembered the Spanish word for house or done a math problem correctly, continuing to practice does very little for long-term retention, says Rohrer.
"Study a lot of material for a little bit of time in one session, rather than a little bit of material for a lot of time."
Keep your brain fit
The long-held assumption that we lose about 10 percent of our neurons per decade is not true.
"Remarkably, there are as many neurons in a healthy 80-year-old brain as there are in a young adult's," says Michela Gallagher, Ph.D, professor of psychological and brain sciences at Johns Hopkins University.
"When you're 50 or 60 and forget something, you think, 'Oh my God, my brain's falling apart.' But if you've still got all your neurons, the likelihood that you can prevent memory loss is much greater than if your brain had substantially deteriorated."
The magic memory pill has yet to be found, but science does know that regular exercise, social engagement, and education all help keep the brain sharp as you age --"not just in terms of current memory," says Gallagher, "but also in reducing the risk of Alzheimer's disease."

Sweet! I'm giggin the ratio 😉 The ladies will have their pick this year!

Oh I really like the sleeping tip. I love taking naps so I think that is great that it is actually somewhat beneficial when studying.

Hey Jen48, i'm not from chicago, I think pinkdoc is though. i'm from franklin tennessee and actually the Harrogate area isn't far from our old stompin grounds as kids so we are really hoping to get in.

we met your hubby at the interview weekend and he was so willing to share with us and answer any of our questions as was the rest of the students we met. Our impression was that the students really do like it there even if it is out in the boondocks!

All the guys are married, so it more like an even 1:1 ratio... I wish it was really 2 guys for every girl!!! Prions.. all you need need is Nick. P, NLO.🙂

Ahh NP, "what a man, what a man, what a mighty fine man, oh yes he is"! Hmmm I'll have to think about this . . . it might come down to that. 😉

let me take a moment and pause to think if it was the other way around

2 girls for every 1 guy....heaven on earth!

Hey everyone! I was accepted back in january but am new to the whole student doctor thing. Are most of you living in student housing or elsewhere? It looks like it is going to be the Ramada apts for me!

Looks like there are a lot of Chi-town people in our class (I sadly haven't been back the last few years).

I did the 2 room only because the 1 room seemed so small, and a girl's got a lot of stuff! I'm excited to get to TN already!

since they lowered the prices again, I think ill go for the 2bedroom too..but we'll see for now

trust me i know about girls and stuff ....lots of stuff 😉

i initially signed up for the 1 bedroom but since they lowered the rates i changed to the 2 room. you get so much more room for what amounts to not much more money.

This 2011'er will save you the gory details of today's events. I don't wanna scare anyone away. I like to think it as though they just asked the wrong questions. 🙂

I wouldn't expect to see much out of us over the weekend either, unless we get stir crazy whilst cramming for this upcoming NS written exam.

Can someone please explain how the testing works at DCOM? is it just 1 big test covering all the subjects.....or?

Thanks

During the fall semester, you'll have a written test about once a month or so which will cover all subjects discussed during that time (about 3 questions per lecture). So, for instance, you'll have Anatomy, MFM I, OPP, FMHC, and EPC all integrated into your tests. Anatomy practicals are about once a month. There were about 3 OPP practicals during the fall, and there was one "OSCE" skills evaluation at the end of the semester for EPC.

Spring semester, the written tests go to every 2-3 weeks.

thanks for covering that....at least it is just 1 exam for all the classes instead of seperate exams for seperate classes like other schools 👍

It has its advantages and disadvantages, but I'll take this system over having subject exams (especially pharms) which would likely equate to having a test once a week on average.

Im doing the one room and Im so worried about all my stuff! Im not going to be able to bring anything with me! I agree with Syncope82 though, I might switch to the 2 room... Does anyone know if that one comes with like couches or anything in the living room?

I was really hoping that Nascardoc could get the scoop on how many seats are left at this point in time . . .

Sorry for not having the info for you guys 🙁 Once they get to this point, they stay pretty mum on the subject b/c it can change all the time. Obviously, there aren't a ton and I don't have an exact number. The thing to remember to is that the waitlist will have some movement, so if no one gets in right away, there is still a chance. Don't give up hope at all. Let the school know how much you want to be there, give updates, LOI, etc., it won't hurt you.

I was really hoping that Nascardoc could get the scoop on how many seats are left at this point in time . . .

I actually asked Paul Carney this today and he said it's basically full. But that doesn't mean a whole lot, there can still be a lot of movement with people getting off waitlists from other schools and leaving their acceptance here. Not exactly good news but things can still happen! :luck:

When are you coming back??? Are you going to go to the gala?

alright guys....I hope we have a better ratio this year

The class of 2011 is
Females 59 (37%)
Males 101 (63%)

Apparently your class, right now, is about 51% female.

I will be at the Gala, and I am hoping to be there next Wednesday night :banana::banana:

Thanks for responding - I know they aren't going to come straight out and say it but I thought I would give it a shot and see if something just happened to leak out . ..

They did say on April 11th that about 80% of the class was filled and we kinda figured if they were looking at accepting the same number this year as last we were looking at a general number of 30ish seats left available at that time and that was with interviews still to be had . . .

This is definitely going to be tight.

I haven't seen anyone else on this sight besides JoshKent that interviewed late like us. . .

Can some current 2011'ers please tell me how the TV situation is in the student apartments?

is it cable tv or satelite tv?....do we have a "box" that we need, or does the coax cable go directly in the tv without any box? Do we only get the standard channels, or are premium channels included or available at an additional cost?

I'm sure this wont' matter during school time, but it will come in really handy on the off time...and everyone needs to wind down once in a while

Thanks

darn right! 😛

although, I don't have the tv in my posession just yet 🙁

I will be buying a ps3 for the blue ray feature ...who would just pay $400 for a blue ray player, when you get a ps3 that will do the same, plus a lot more?

movie night in my 1 bedroom student apartment!! 🙂

I just wanted to offer some encouragement up to those of you on the waitlist. I was in your shoes this time last year...certain I was applying again! I applied late, interviewed late and was waitlisted. It does move and I got my call the first few days of June but was by no means one of the early ones called. I also know they accepted someone a few weeks before class started as well. The waitlist will move...not much at first but in a few weeks it will start. My advice to you is what one of you has done already...plan ahead and get your stuff in order that way when you get the call you are not scrambling to get everything done. Save your money, as much as you can for a move, get your shots, titers, drug tests, decide what, when and how you will move, etc. Getting in is hard but it doesn't end there you have to actually get your self (and any significant other's) here to Harrogate TN.

Good Luck to all waiting :luck::luck::luck::luck:

Thanky Shasta...
I'm waitlisted. It seems like forever. Thanks for knowing this. I already see myself in Nevada since that is already my state and I'm accepted at TUNCOM. But, seriously, I absolutely LOVED AND ADORED this school, though. My interview was an EPIPHANY of minds meeting. A complete mind melt. It was just more than I had bargained for. DeBusk is a force to be reckoned with and I would have loved to have been a part of it for I know I would have DEFINITELY contributed. Well, anyway, no news yet, and I'm already accepted to TOURO NV. Harrogate, TN is still where I want to be. I am listing to starboard right now. I feel as if thousands will be thrown from my flightdeck at any minute.
Titanic.jpg

Take care and we'll just wait it out but it's hard to be over here!!!!
On the side where everything suddenly starts sliding!!!!

Anyone still waiting on their award info...... like me? 😕 *Sigh*.... guess it's time to make a call.....

I'd be willing to bet you a TV that it's on the website.

already found it! (423-869-7107)
I will keep my tv! 😀

I spoke with Pat who said mine was mailed out on monday, along with everyone elses. I know the chicago mail system is more slow than other areas, so that's why its probalby being held up somewhere...probably in the black hole (indiana)

Same response here, which confirmed my suspicions - darn you Indiana! They need a fist-shaking smiley face....

Yeah, I haven't gotten mine either (waay out here in Cali), but Pat told me the same thing (that they were mailed out on Monday). We should get them soon! 👍 I've never been more excited to borrow copious money in my life! Woo Hoo! 😀
