This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I did! I did!!!! Shasta and I were won the same team as well as another girl in our class. We took a few teams down with the Wilderness Medicine Club. It was pretty awesome!!!! Get excited!

See you guys soon. Have the rest of a great summer!

See you soon!! When are you heading back? I'll be leaving in a week. I'm excited and sad at the same time...maybe I'm warped!:bang:

Hey 2011ers,
I probably already know the answer to this, but I'll ask anyway. How much pain will I be in for if I missed a weekend of studying the 2nd week of school? My best friend is coming in from Iraq August 8th and we're planning to spend the whole weekend with them at a lake cabin...so I definitely would not have time for studying that weekend. Do y'all think it would be sufficient for me to spend extra time the week prior and after studying to catch up? I hope the loss of a weekend will not be detrimental.

What do you think?

It honestly depends. If you get anatomy well and understand what is going on with that, then things might be "easier." You will have things to do, but it definitely won't be the busiest school week/weekend you will have. The biggest issue you have is that you are still adjusting to school and starting out on the best foot possible is a BIG thing. If you decide to go, bring your computer and study, you don't have a choice. That is your first full week of anatomy and you don't want to blow it off, especially if you never had it before. Either way you will be studying, it just depends on where you are doing it.

I could likely get in a couple of hours of studying over the weekend...but probably not the amount that I will typically do on a weekend. ND how much time do you typically spend studying on the weekend?

Well, remember that the weekend you are talking about is after your first full week of classes. That weekend will not be reflective of future weekends. You don't have a ton of MFM that week, mostly anatomy and extra classes. The anatomy will be heavy, but anatomy will be all semester.

As for typical weekends, I would spend pretty much all Saturday afternoon studying and a few hours Sunday (depending on when tests were and how much I needed to do). I always watched the Bears play and if I needed to look at stuff, I would. The sad thing you will realize is that you will look forward to weekends, not b/c of social activities (although you can do them), but b/c you won't be learning anything new for 2 days.

Remember though that you have anatomy, so you will be spending plenty of time in lab. Trust me when I say you will miss anatomy come 2nd semester 😉

I'm sure the class of 2011 can give much better information since they have actually been through this..

but i'll try to give you what i know from other friends who have passed their tricks on to me

Of course everyone is different, but I had a friend who did not study at all on the weekends. He made sure he woke up at like 4 am and studied till about 10 pm M-F......then on the weekends..he dedicated his time to his wife and child

of course this could be a tall tale, he's a genius, or he's just a very efficient studier...but as everyone else said..it all depends on you

Everyone that I talk to for advice have the same theme in common: that is you have to find a study habit that works (flash cards, pure reading material over and over, etc.), set a schedule, and stick with it.

The general rule of thumb is to master what you have learned that day, do not save it for later...you should be able to spit it out by the time you go to sleep

I've also heard about a 3 look/pass method---

1) you should do a quick pre-read of the material in the morning..so you knwo whats coming in class...basically get a general "framework" of what will be taught...just 5 minutes per lecture
2) the second pass will be the lecture itself
3) the third pass will be studying/mastering that same days material immedietly after class ends...so it is still fresh

there is something with memory and retention that works the best when you use this method...don't ask me why...but I've heard it from many friends who went on to medical school

That seems to be a common method as I have seen lots of people swear by it on SDN. I guess it will just really be a trial and error type of thing...hopefully without too much error involved 😉. I think commonly I will spend a good bit of time studying on the weekends, and as Nascardoc said, that will be the weekend after the first week of school, so likely there won't be an insane amount of material to have mastered. In the end though, it is much more important to me to spend time with a friend that I have not seen in a long time and that I will not see again for a long time. I feel that I can sacrifice the time during the week that I planned to relax after class and just grab some quick food and head straight for the office.

Beyond that first weekend though, if anyone else has any helpful study hints I would love to hear them. How do you portion out your time? Does anyone employ the "Read the bold print only" type of studying? How has that worked for you? When you sit down to study, do you play it by ear as to how long you spend on each subject/topic, or do you say, "I have this much time to study, so I will spend _____ hours on each piece?"

I agree with you....spend time with your friend...you'll be fine.

Syncope, how a person gets up at 4am to study is beyond me. And yes, the more efficient you are...the better. That is an area I need to work on, especially with a child on the way.

As for the different methods, it depends on different things like how well you know the material already, if it just something you get easily, how close you are to an exam, etc. I personally have never heard of the bold print only method and I would not use it. For quick, efficient studying, use review books....they are great. And remember that 1st and 2nd semesters are fairly different, so prepare to change then. But like everyone has said, you will have to experience everything first in order to see how things go. If you have 3 methods, try them and see which ones work, any tweeks that need to be made, etc. I am still going to be trying new ideas this year, so we will see how things go. But don't forget that the lectures are recorded and that is a GREAT way to study, IMO. Yeah, it takes a little extra time, but its worth it.

Posted this on the 2012 page...but wasn't sure if all the 2011ers subscribed to that one:

Hey everyone,
I meant to post this sooner, but I just kept forgetting to do it...Targus is having an awesome sale on most of their backpacks. You can't find a nice laptop backpack for under $50...but right now they're having a 25th anniversary sale and some of their top stuff is $25...Half Price! I ordered a really nice looking back yesterday, I was really tempted to order 2 just so I could see which one I liked better.

Anyway, here is the link:

Also, here is a coupon code for $5 more off:
Gannett8213
So now it's $19.99 for a $50 laptop bag.

My mentor, the DO I shadowed for a long time, always talked about how he employed the "bold print only" method. There is some movie with a guy in law school I believe where the guys says that is how he studied. The idea is that the stuff that is really important to know is always in bold. Most things not in bold are more explanatory information that may not necessarily be required to know all of it, but if there is something written in bold that you do not understand, you should read the non-bold stuff.

I personally have never tried that approach to studying. Looking at some other people's strategies, it seems that it's actually a common practice whether they realize it or not...most people highlight in their books all the bolded terms and definitions as well as the bold descriptions under the pictures. Though that is probably not the only strategy I would suggest using, I do think it would be effective in quickly studying through a chapter to see the most important information contained within it and to judge the information you may not fully understand...it's probably good for that "5 minute read-through" that Syncope referred to.

See you soon!! When are you heading back? I'll be leaving in a week. I'm excited and sad at the same time...maybe I'm warped!:bang:

I just got back the day before yesterday... I'll be here for a few days and then I'm going back home again for a friends wedding shower and bachelorette party. I won't be back until Sunday night before class starts! I'm cutting it pretty close. See you guys soon!!!!

The last day for waitlist acceptances was today. Congrats to everyone who got in. I didn't, even though they said locals had a leg-up. Good luck to everyone. I'll be back.

still the chance to be accepted to next years class if you are high on the waitlist

how do you find out if you were high on the alternate list? how does the process work? i was waitlisted last yr and have reapplied, but have received no word about a secondary app yet!

i dont know i guess they would call you or email you.... I havent heard anything either

Hi, everybody!

I applied for the class of 2012 and got waitlisted. I would have gotten in if anyone had withdrawn the week for the start or term, or if some one didn't show up to Orientation. But that didn't happen, so now, I've got a seat for the class of 2013. Yay! \o/

I've been reading through the thread and you guys sound like such a great group of people, so now I'm even more excited to have been accepted to DCOM.

I'm going to have lots of questions, I'm sure, but I'll lay low for now, since it's early yet. The biggest concern in my mind is housing, since I have a cat, so I can't live in the university apartments.
