LMU-DCOM Discussion Thread 2009-2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Is it possible to send the secondary without the DO LOR? It may be another month before I find a DO who will have a long enough conversation with me to consider writing me a letter...

Contact the admin office for the answer. Lastly, you got to shadow or volunteer with a DO for a good letter. A long enough conversation will not have much impression on admin committee.
Hope this helps

I'm aware. The problem is that the DO I've shadowed may let me observe him, but will not really talk to me. He's always too busy to spend any time speaking to me, so I'm having to go find a doctor that I can shadow and speak to for more than 10 seconds. The MDs I worked with during an internship at the ER just tended to stare straight through me. A conversation (of any length) would really help me out at this point.

That's not necessarily the case, TX. 🙂

You don't have to shadow a DO, but it's greatly recommended and will certainly increase your chances at getting a good LOR. However, with that being said, you do have to have an LOR from a DO. I received my medical shadowing experience after working in cardiology for 3 years. I had a strong letter from one of my mentors, but I also sat down with a FP DO for about an hour and she wrote me a letter.

Now, I wouldn't go about it the lazy way.. but it just so happened that that's how it worked for me. Do the shadowing if you can, get some experience somewhere. I didn't have that opportunity, but I still had a LOR written for me and I was accepted.

Good luck, Exalya! When in doubt, e-mail admissions!

Thanks for clarifying that thing. I did not have that situation so I did not know. Good to have you helping these kids around.

Cheers🙂

PS: Just 1 more week till the school starts, are you excited? Sure I am.

Every time I write in the secondary pdf it places the words in such a way that they look crossed out. Anyone else have this problem? Should I try a PC instead of a Mac? I appreciate your help 🙂 👍

Anyone in Harrogate want to help me move a couple couches from my truck to inside my house?

That's it--no other moving - promise!!

I'll buy beers

I think you wrote this in the wrong thread. Try the 08-09 one.

She said they would start contacting people about interviews starting in August. The interviews themselves don't start until October.

Debusk still has provisional accreditation, right? (correct me if I am wrong, please) So that would make federal Title IV funds not an option. Could always go through Sallie Mae, they are pretty good even though interest may be a little higher than some others. They have a specific loan program for med students.

At DCOM you can get stafford and grad plus loans. You don't have to get a private loan like RVU since DCOM is attached to a university. There are DO student scholarships. I'm too lazy to provide links.

Woo-hoo!!! I'm glad I was wrong.

Did they contact you and offer you the 2010 slot or did you defer your 2009 admission?

I know you were probably joking but yeah they started this past friday...lol. I have a lot of work to catch up on, but it will definately be worth it!

Does DCOM send a "complete" email out when the application is complete? I sent my secondary in a long time ago and never heard anything back so I called today and the lady said (in aggravated tone) that she was pulling LORs down and it takes 3 weeks to process things fully. Wondering if I should wait a couple more days and call again.

Welcome to the class.

I don't recall a 'complete' email being sent out. I called the admissions office and they pulled the file to let me know what was missing/received, etc. Having someone sound aggravated at DCOM is abnormal. Maybe wait until the end of the week and try again. They just finished first years' orientation and today was the first day back for second years. It's been a little hectic so give the office a couple of days and try again. They really are the most awesome admissions staff so if you had one bad phone call, don't hold that against them. Just try again.

The nest week or so is a crazy time at school with the first years starting, the second years restarting and the staff getting everything organized, so I would give it at least a week before calling again. They won't start interviewing until October, so you have lots of time before panic should set in.

BTW, this is the time of year where third years are glad they are neither first or second year students anymore 🙂

It's also the time of year when second years wish they were third years, if only they could skip June/July of next summer

I just wanted to get some of your opinions about this. The second essay question from LMU-DCOM asks you to explain the people and experiences that inspired you to become an osteopathic physician. That's basically my entire personal statement from my primary application. Is it okay to basically make slight modifications to it and submit? Otherwise, I really don't know how I can come up with an entirely new essay.

Thanks.

Definitely read what they have to say on the Admissions page about what they're looking for. Even though those people and experiences influenced you, it was still your decision. How did you come to it? Were there any doubts? How did you mature on this path?

Recognize that even though that question asks you about other people, you're still trying to sell yourself.

Well, I finally got that DO letter I needed by shadowing an awesome family practice doc. Still waiting on my AACOMAS to be verified, should be any day now... aaaaaaany day now... :/

In anticipating the secondary, I have a question about timing. I use interfolio for all my LORs; after my primary is received and I am prompted for the secondary should I ask interfolio to send the LORs the same day I send my secondary? I only ask because I don't know if it would be bad for the LORs to get there before the secondary itself. I've had some hitches with my AACOMAS, so I'm trying to save as much time as possible. I don't mean to sound silly. ^.^

Just send them with the secondary (at the same time), that is what I did and have had no hitches other than some crazy AZCOM stuff.

Anyone heard anything about interview invitations lately?

I got an email today from Robin Lamb telling me my file was complete and will be reviewed. Interviews begin in October. Anyone else get this? Is it a form email to everyone? Because I know my file has been complete with them for about a month.

Droogdoc, I received the same e-mail today. Coincidentally, I called the school and spoke to "Amy" in Admissions yesterday morning. She said that the emphasis had been on getting the new class in and started and that has now been accomplished. She further stated that now that the admission of the class of 2013 was complete, they were reviewing applications and would e-mail those applicants whose files were complete. Invitations to interview would be by phone call beginning sometime in late August (she was not specific about exactly when the calls would be made). Interviews begin in early October.

I received the same email today but had confirmed via phone over a month ago that I was complete. I assume this is the official "We are beginning to process applications" email.

Do they screen for secondaries or not?

Do they screen for secondaries or not?

No, because their secondary can be downloaded as a PDF from their admissions website. It even says on their admissions guidline PDF that you can send in the secondary as soon as your AACOMAS is verified.

Does anyone know if LMU is biased against out of state students or those outside of the Appalachian region?

I live in Florida. I took Organic Chem with a guy from Texas who just started medical school this week at LMU - DCOM. He loves the school. He told me that there are many OOS students. Apply! Not applying is an automatic no.

Whoever you talked to is absolutely right. DCOM is wonderful and as a first year med student, I totally love it. We are having the first round exams next week and everyone is so busy. Med school is gorgeous.😱😀:xf::laugh:

Got a phone call for an interview invite today. I set mine up for October 12th. She said they will be every Monday & Tuesday and the first available day is October 5th.

The lady was very, very nice, and her southern accent was so strong I almost couldn't understand her when I first answered the phone!

droogdoc, congrats on the interview invite! i got one today also and set my interview up for the 5th, not knowing its the first day of interviews!

The lady was very very nice who called me too. her name was Amy. I'm guessing you had the same one. She def had a southern accent!

Best of Luck! any advice for interview day or travel arrangements, i would appreciate it.

Best of luck to everyone in this process!

She told me a confirmation email will be sent out that will have more info, including travel information.

Congrat for the interview!!! Whoever needs a place to stay over during the interview, let me know. School apartment is small but my heart is so big.

Got the interview invite by phone yesterday. I really don't like waiting until October. I am excited to go now!!!

Yay, interview invite!! I wish it were sooner. For any current students reading this, I was wondering if there will be pizza night at the Oasis this year?
😳 when I got the phone call, I thought she was saying "..the best college of osteopathic medicine" (which it is!) but then I realized she was saying "debusk college of osteopathic medicine." (I am not from the south, hehe)

Interviews start in October, so you are getting first dibs...think of it that way.

Pizza night should happen...don't see why not. Those of us in the inaugural class at DCOM received t-shirts from the school on our first day of orientation that said, "De Best College of Osteopathic Medicine." It's funny you brought that up, I haven't thought about that one in awhile 🙂.

What is DCOM's average MCAT and GPA? How many people do they take a class?

What is DCOM's average MCAT and GPA? How many people do they take a class?

This is from a previous post---

For everyone intersted, here are the stats for the Class of 2012 at LMU-DCOM:

Number of AACOMAS applications: 2039

Number of applicants scheduled for an on-campus interview: 509 (24.96% of the AACOMAS applicant pool)

Number of applicants interviewed: 497 (24.37% of the AACOMAS applicant pool; 97.6% of interviews scheduled or 2.4% no-show rate)

Number of offers of admissions extended to applicants: 297 (14.6% of the AACOMAS applicant pool and 59.8% of those interviewed)

Number of those who were extended an offer of admission who also accepted the offer of admission/students in the class: 160 (53.9% of those who were offered admission)

Grade Point Averages:
Mean Cumulative GPA 3.38
Mean Non-Science GPA 3.5
Mean Science GPA 3.27

Mean MCAT Composite Total 24.4

I would bet big money that the average GPA and MCAT this year will be somewhat higher.

Droogdoc,

Do you have any stats on Pikeville? If so, please post them in that that thread.

Thanks.
