LMU-DCOM Discussion Thread 2009-2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
IIIIIIIIIIIII just wanted to say -- GOOD LUCK to all of the interviewees! This place is SO SO awesome! And congrats on the interview! You must be pretty spiffy!

I'll be at Pizza night (which, DONT FORGET is now at the Pizza Hut in middlesboro [booooooooooo]) on the 5th and 12th of this month! Maybe more if I can get some extra time.

Good luck everyone!!! 🙂

Hey Gomango I am on the nov 16th also. I will fly in on the 15th early in the morning. What airport is the best to do this...and what is the best hotel to go to? PLEASE SOMEONE HELP I NEED TO BOOK THIS THING soon.

Hi Jedi,
The school should have sent you a word file that has travel info in it. I am flying in to Knoxville on Nov 14th, arriving later in the evening. The flights out of my town are very few and far between so my travel times stink! I'm staying at the Holiday Inn, like the school suggested (which is nice because of the shuttle to the school they offer!). I'm using Enterprise to rent a car (the school also offers a discount, but I guess you can't get it until you get to their counter in the airport!).

When I called the hotel, last week, I apparently got one of the last rooms they had for that weekend! All they had left was king size beds and I still got the student discount.

I will be at the pizza night get-together on Sunday evening! YaY!! This is my first interview and I am so happy. This school looks amazing! The town looks so beautiful.

Does anyone know what the winters are like in this area? My husband is hoping it snows regularly in this area. =)

There is no shuttle to DCOM from the airport. You will need to rent a car. The shuttle is form the Holiday Inn to DCOM on your interview day just so that's clear.

I'm using Enterprise to rent a car (the school also offers a discount, but I guess you can't get it until you get to their counter in the airport!).

You can give them the discount code over the phone or online. It's always more expensive to setup a car rental in person last minute because they'll take advantage of the situation.

Very little snow in this area. We get a few inches a year. It does get cold in January though.

Enjoy Pizza Night and good luck on the interview.

I did not get a code with my travel info doc. I did reserve a car over the phone with enterprise (same price as on their website), but I was told I couldn't get the discount until I was in person at the Knoxville counter?!

It may just be a different setup then.

How long have they been taking to get back to you after submitting secondaries?

Good luck with your interviews!😀 DCOM is a great school! You'll see why soon! Shoot me an e-mail if you have any questions.

I am not sure. I think around 8/26 I was complete and got the call on 9/28 or so.
Don't worry.

That's a relief. I really want to see what DCOM has to offer, and while NSU and LECOM-B got back to me within a week or two, it's been almost a month with DCOM. Still hoping for it...

Got a phone call for an interview invite today. I set mine up for October 12th.

Interview invite a few minutes ago...Monday Oct. 12. Hope to meet some of you there.

I also thought she said Lincoln Memorial University - The Best College of Osteopathic medicine. Very amusing.

If ya'll need me to translate for you'ns I can. 😀
When she called me I understood her perfectly....but then again I speak her language. I only live about 40 miles from DCOM. lol

Oct. 12 also. good luck!:xf:
You guys all looked great today!

:luck: to the group interviewing tomorrow! Go to Pizza Hut tonight and enjoy yourself.

What is DCOM's average MCAT and GPA? How many people do they take a class?
I heard today that the avg MCAT is 25. not sure about GPA.

I had my interview today at DCOM. Wow! 😀 that about sums it up for me. I hope that I am lucky enough to get the call to attend there! I am keeping my fingers crossed. Everyone was so nice today and those that came out to pizza hut Sunday..Thanks so much.

Best of luck to all that were in my interview group. :xf:

Everyone is so helpful and nice, very low pressure for an interview. 👍

hi guys! i am interviewing in a few weeks and am super nervous?! how was the interview? high or low stress? was it open file?

Is there anybody who is coming to the Pizza night on Oct. 18th?

If interviews are done the same as last year, it's open file. But there is really nothing to stress about! Really! Everyone is very laid back and wants you to be at ease.

I say that but here's the thing-Regardless of what we say in the thread, you will probably be somewhat stressed because it's an interview. Then, when it's all over, you'll hate that you didn't relax more because it was so laid back.

😀

:luck: to everyone!!!

Had interview here and it went well I think. They are trying closed file this year. Awesome school, great brand new everything.

DCOM's avg. MCAT is 24. I posted that along w/ the avg. GPA earlier in this thread somewhere.

I got those numbers from the admissions office. Any student can ask for them.

I interviewed on Oct. 6th. I'll describe my impressions.

The interviews are closed file this year. They are trying it out. As for the interview day it's fairly low-stress. The interviewers weren't as personable as everyone insists. Basically it was two people taking turns reading an interview script and allowing time for me to answer. There were no follow-up questions to any of my answers. The school of course is impressive with the newness and technology everywhere. The best part of the day for me was the impromptu OMT demonstration. It was my first experience and seems like something I would be interested in. The tuition and deposit in my opinion are pretty high but not out of range. The rotation sites are scattered which could be a problem for someone with a family and owning a house. They are rumored to become even more scattered in the next couple years also.

Overall I was impressed and could see myself going to school there. The positives outweigh any negatives. If you have the opportunity to interview here, take it.

Decisions are likely already made for my interview group but Dean Stowers doesn't return from vacation until the Oct. 20th to finalize these decisions with a signature and phone call. Until then, fingers stay crossed.

Hrm. 25 is what I heard from Robin earlier this week. Maybe it went up?

EDIT: I went back and looked at the stats-those appear to be the average for our class. A 25 on the MCAT is what current applicants are being told is the average.

My primary just got verified, and they have had my secondary for quite some while now. My letters have been in for a while also. How quickly do you all think it will take before I get an interview inviite? I'm just below average mcat of 24, but have a much higher gpa than the average. what do you all think?! thanks

I absolutely think you have a chance. I'm in a similar boat, being 3 points under the average for MCAT scores but my gpa is higher than the average by a good amount. I was called for an interview at the end of september. This was the longest I had to wait for any school to hear back from. I was complete in end of July/beginning of August.
Hope this helps!

In response to Generic student,
I guess it depended upon the interview team. The two that interviewed me were personable and they did ask several follow up questions to my answers. I did feel that the first question or two were generic, but I took that as my opportunity to tell them what I wanted without worry about being confined to a very strict line of questioning.
In all, I agree with you about the school being very nice and would not advise anyone to pass up an interview here.👍

Can't wait to hear news from you guys once Doc gets back!!! :luck: :xf:

So, how do all you DCOM students like Dr. Nida? 😀

How many people have been accepted so far?! How many people do they plan on taking?! According to some stats, they took 289 I believe last year, and 160 matriculated. thanks guys

It seems weird to me that they would have all of these details down, freely give them out to students, and then misquote them. Maybe the new standard they are looking for is a 25 on the MCAT.

I got this like a month or so ago, about a month and a half after we started classes. We haven't added anyone since then, so I don't know how they would go up. Weird.

TBH, I asked for them as an afterthought when I was originally asking for 2011's COMLEX average (or correlation to GPA). They didn't have the COMLEX scores yet, so I asked for our averages and Robin (I think) printed them out for me.

Hi everybody! I just applied to LMU...I am very excited! I pray I get into this school! I was wondering how do I find out if my letters and secondary were received? Do I call the school and ask or no? Also...I applied to the post bac program. I know if one maintains the gpa they will get an interview for the next yr but do a lot of the post bac students get into LMU DCOM after completing the post bac program? Thank you in advance for any help!🙂

Not sure why there's any confusion. You've posted our class stats. Doesn't mean that's the source for the same info being told to applicants. I don't think it's that critical. Our average is a 24.4, they're telling students 25.

People should apply if they're close. If they fall under but have a superb gpa and stats, they can apply but maybe plan to take the exam again.

Believe me.....We can't to here the news either! Thanks for the positive vibes!

I'm also one of the people who has been waiting on LMU for a while... they've had my secondary for more than a month at this point, I think. I have pretty good stats (27Q/3.5) so I'm hoping for at least an interview, I've been interested in this school since I started researching osteopathy. Anyone know how far out the interviews are being scheduled lately?

Write a letter of interest for your file. Something that says to the school "I really am interested'. It never hurts to have that in your file and it brings an extra positive to it, in my opinion.

Has it been a month since you submitted the secondary or have you confirmed the school has your secondary?

I called them about two weeks ago just to make sure (I know I submitted the secondary about a month ago, back in September), and they confirmed that my secondary and everything was in, and said that my file was being reviewed. I've heard conflicting views on whether LOI's are worth writing or not... if I don't hear anything pretty soon I might do one, though.

In my opinion, they can't hurt. IF for some reason your file was reviewed and not chosen at that time for an interview, what better way to have them take a second look than with a LOI? If you have any other ECs that you've done since submitting your application, you can mention that. If you're taking classes and have your midterm grades, mention that.

Since it's only be 2 weeks since you called to check on it, waiting a couple of weeks might not be a bad idea. But if you don't hear anything by this time next month, I'd definitely write a letter.

Just my $0.02. :luck:

HEY GUYS! I AM INTERVIEWING OCT 20th!!! I AM WONDERING IF ANYBODY IS GOING TO THE PIZZA NIGHT ON MONDAY NIGHT...

THANKS!!!!!!!

Well for those of us who interviewed on oct 6th we should be hearing something back soon. Hopefully sooner than later!

I hope the this is the week that we will get the call that many of us are waiting on! 🙂

Good luck everyone!:luck:

I went to my interview today and I am in love with the school. Everybody there is really nice and seem really interested to learn more about the applicants.
I also wanted to say that I stayed at a bed and breakfast called Russell Creek Inn and it was great, just in case anybody was looking for a place to stay before the interview. It was a quiet area and the owners work very hard to make you comfortable.

I agree with sugardr. lmu-dcom is nice.
There are a lot of info they provide you with, and it was a great experience to interview there. :xf:

I tried to upload some pics.

Thanks for the pics. It looks beautiful! I can't wait for my interview, I wish it would get here as I'm anxious and impatient. 😉

does anyone who interviewed 10/5 or 10/6 have info on when we should hear back?? (or has anyone heard back yet?)

I think they said that the dean was coming back today, and that he had to sign off on the decisions before they would notify us.

Does anyone know if they will be contacting us my phone, email, or traditional mail and/or the date that they will start doing so?

From what I understand we may be notified via telephone. However if the dean is to busy to call us we may just receive notification via snailmail. I was told that those of us interviewed on 10/06 would be notified sometime this week.

I've been checking out this forum for the past few months. But this is actually my first post. hehe.

I had my interview yesterday (Aug 20th). I drove down there (long 8 hours of driving) and it was totally worth it. I loved facilities. People were so friendly and nice. I hope I was a little bit less nervous during my interview. I really want to attend DCOM now. Pizza night was great too. I got great information from them. It seems like students there really work together... not like trying to gun down each other. I can't wait to hear the decision. Lord... please....

I can't believe I were in five states in two days. If you visit there, you gotta go to cumberland national park. Scenes are awesome. You can practically be in three states by going up there.

G'luck to everyone waiting for the decision.

Still waiting for news. I spoke with admissions today and was informed we should hear something within the week. Those of us that interviewed on 1005-1006

If you enjoyed that, a good day trip from Harrogate would be to the Birch Knob Lookout Tower in Clintwood, VA.

The observation deck is at elevation 3144 feet above sea level. The view from this perspective can allow one to see Kentucky, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, and possibly Ohio on a clear day.

Hopefully it is. I bet we will not get a personal phone call since he was out for so long. My assumption is we will be getting notified via snail mail.

ok so maybe I was wrong....

I just got the call....Accepted

Good luck to all!
