I am from Colorado and I got an interview. I got the call on 10-27, my secondary was postmarked about 2 weeks prior.
 
Can a 3rd year or current student answer these questions for me:

1) How are the students liking the rotation sites? Are they big hospitals or smaller community hospitals?
2) Who sets up the rotations? The school or the student?
3) How do you go about setting up elective rotations?
4) What kind of clinical exposure do 1st and 2nd year students get?

Current 3rd year here....I will answer your questions to the best of my ability, but remember some of the answers are strictly opinions and vary from person to person:

1) Overall, I believe most are happy. I haven't heard a ton about every single site, but from what I do know, most students are happy. The hospitals are smaller community hospitals. Now, before anyone gets their underwear in a bunch screaming they want to be at a level 1 center so they can see a ton of stuff, hear this....yeah, you may SEE more at a level 1 center, but you get to DO more at a smaller hospital. For example, at my site, students are often the 1st assist on their surgery rotation. It is you and the doc, that's it.....no residents, no interns to get in your way....so lots of hands on learning.

2) It's a combination really. As for core sites, the school sets them up. For electives and selectives, if the doc is on our list of docs, then the school sets them up after you put in a request. As for rotations with docs not on our list, students set them up, for the most part. I setup a couple rotations myself and its not that difficult, as long as you do it early enough.

3) As for setting up electives, if the hospital has a residency program, contact the program and talk to them to set something up, i.e. contact IM, Ortho, etc....each specialty has its own contact person, usually. If the hospital is not a teaching program, then usually you have a specific doc you want to work with, so you talk with him/her and they talk with the hospital and get everything worked out. You will still need to work with the clinical education people at school to have them send stuff to any place you setup rotations. But it's not too difficult, just keep on top of things.

4) You get a decent amount, IMO. I don't know how other schools are compared to DCOM, so its hard to say. You start working on clinical stuff right away and utilize the simulation lab a lot. Plus, you get to help out in the clinic school has....actually required to. Plus, you are allowed to shadow in your free time. There is no formal time you are in the hospital, but thats ok. Have I found that detrimental to my education.....nope.

I agree with Nascar doc totally. I am in the healthcare field and starting at DCOM next Fall and I can tell you that i have worked both at a Very large hospital(actually in Memphis) as well as some smaller ones. I would say hands down you get to do a lot more in community hospitals than the larger ones. Also the doctors seem to get more comfortable with you at a small hospital than at larger ones.

Again Level I is fine but unless you want to practice in a Trauma center or solely focused on going the ER route, then I wouldn't sweat it too much.

Anyway just wanted to speak.
PS-Is there a lot of helping the weaker students at DCOM. I have friends at some other medical schools where if one person in the class is failing then other student's rally around him/herl to push him/her through. Just wondering.

Not a current student at LMU-DCOM but I do live about 3 minutes from one of the rotation hospitals. Nascardoc is certainly spot on about this. Let's put it this way... I had a friend who worked in environmental services (janitor) at one of the hospitals. He's also a paramedic. It wasn't uncommon for them to page him when the E.R. got slammed to help treat patients. Even though there aren't many Level 1 trauma centers in this area... you are literally in the trenches and often times very unarmed.

I don't have the statistics for eastern TN but I do have the statistics for Southwest Virginia which is just a few minutes drive. These statistics are for Southwest Virginia when compared to the rest of Virginia.

23% more likely to die from heart disease
44% more likely to die from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
41% more likely to die from pneumonia or influenza
30% more likely to die from diabetes
54% more likely to die from chronic liver disease
70% more likely to die from unintentional injuries and
70% more likely to commit suicide. (In fact the region has among the highest suicide rates in the state.)

You absolutely will see almost everything you want to see. I hope more students weigh in on this, it's interesting to see the point of view from your eyes.

Guys, I received my official acceptance letter today. It said that we need to send in official transcripts from undergraduate and graduate schools. Is it something that we can do it now? Or do we have to wait until next summer and send it in? I'm just curious and it's past 5 so I cannot call the office.

Congrats, Mayadoc. We were interviewed on the same day.

If you're done with all degrees and classes you'll be taking, you can send it now. If not, wait until you're done and then send transcripts.
 
Seems to me that the wealth of knowledge on SDN and in these LMU-DCOM threads might be helping some gain acceptance! There's nothing like community building to ensure everyone's success!
 
I'm still waiting on my AACOMAS to be verified, but just sent it in about three weeks ago. I really hope that I can get interview at this school. I would love to go there.

Have you started on the secondary? You can send that in while your AACOMAS is being verified. Cuts down on some of the time delay.

Absolutely. I've already sent that in. Sent it in the day after the primary.

I just wanted to let you know when my group was interviewing they told us they looking at MCAT and GPA scores 5th or 6th. They looking at more important things. They really want to know who you are, so make sure your essays are very good, in that way it is about you not about your accomplishments.

Also, I think it is a good advantage the interviews are Closed Files, I was little bit afraid it will not be good, since they don't ask anything what I put in my file, but it gave me the chance to tell them who I am through the people I met.

It turned out good for me!
Also, check the interview questions people are posting.

Ahh I am SO glad to hear this. It should definitely help me out! It's nice to know that a school is really acknowledging that a less-than-stellar GPA doesn't necessarily indicate a lack of ability to succeed in med school. And I don't say that only to justify my wanting to be accepted so badly, but more so because there are so many smart physicians that just SHOULDN'T be physicians!

It was posted on the first page of the thread. These stats are for the Class of 2012.

Number of AACOMAS applications: 2039

Number of applicants scheduled for an on-campus interview: 509 (24.96% of the AACOMAS applicant pool)

Number of applicants interviewed: 497 (24.37% of the AACOMAS applicant pool; 97.6% of interviews scheduled or 2.4% no-show rate)

Number of offers of admissions extended to applicants: 297 (14.6% of the AACOMAS applicant pool and 59.8% of those interviewed)

Number of those who were extended an offer of admission who also accepted the offer of admission/students in the class: 160 (53.9% of those who were offered admission)

YAY im so excited to be accepted!!! I interviewed on the 19th and loved it! I hope to see a lot of you in August and let me know if any of you find a good housing index i tried google but it didnt work out for me!
 
I just realized that data is actually pretty profound. Basically, if you're invited to interview, you stand roughly a 60% chance to gain acceptance based on the Class of 2012 data.

For those of you who haven't heard anything... the odds are on your side! Hang in there! 🙂

I'm very encouraged to hear/see this information! Thank you for providing it. While I haven't been extended an interview, I'm heartened to learn that if I am invited that I will stand a better chance than not of being accepted.

Um yes please!! How does one approach that issue? It seems as though they would be unlikely to offer that date to someone that they call in the next couple of days since it is coming up so soon, but is that weird to call and see if any earlier dates are available...?

How quickly I have forgotten what it was like to be waiting for the interview....and then waiting for the call. It has only been less than two weeks since Dr. Stowers called me and watching this tread has made me remember what it felt like before that call. So here is to all of you still waiting! :luck::xf: BEST OF LUCK and when you get that call just don't forget those still waiting. They will need our support! 🙂

Have you double-checked with the school about the ability for two people to share the 2 room? It only has one bed and is kinda tiny for roommates. And please understand-the med school housing is NOT on campus. It's about 5 minutes away.

I don't know of any new on-campus housing that has cropped up for the med school.
 
For anyone who is currently attending or will be attending; does anyone have experience with a loved one attending UT knoxville while yourself attends/will attend LMU in Harrogate and what kind of living conditions i.e live together somewhere in the middle, one person commutes etc??

Ditto this question...this is one drawback to LMU for me right now, but I can't really sacrifice an acceptance if I'm offered one.

I haven't experienced it but there are people in my class who drive to class every day from Knoxville b/c their family is there. There are also plenty of small towns along the way if you want to divide the drive time. I think one spouse of the class lives in Harrogate and drives almost an hr to work.

The downside that I've seen for living in K'town and commuting the whole way is that a lot of times there may be group study sessions or OPP practice sessions that take place a few hrs after class is done. If you live in Knoxville, you're either left driving home really late or just not going to the study sessions.

I would say yes. It's all about what you make of school. You have to have a strong routine down that you can stick to but there are people in our class with kids who don't study until the young'uns are in bed. And they're doing great.

You may have to tweak your routine a bit to find something that works perfectly for you but don't forget that the support system here is amazing. If you need help, ask.

I think this goes right along with anything else. The fact that it's med school doesn't necessarily determine whether or not you can make it happen with the commute. It's all about will, determination, and mostly time management. There's no reason you can't do this and plenty of reasons you can!
 
Just curious what town would be the best to live in if someone was to live roughly in between knox and school (that is, largest town or most to offer)? I know new tazewell has some amenities but not sure if anyone knows or has experiences with other areas with more to offer?

Have you received package that contains housing info? I haven't. I'm going to wait until I receive that info and consider all my options. I checked out University Housing after my interview (I dunno if you did.. because we interviewed on the same day) and I liked it. I like the basketball court especially. If you know any other good place, let me know.

I totally agree. The whole interview experience was very pleasant. They don't try to grill you or anything. Very Relaxing... conversational. If you want to prepare for your interview, I highly recommend to check the interview questions. I hope to see you all next fall. I can't wait.
 
Has anyone sent in deposit yet? I picked up extra hours at work to save some money for deposit. I'm half-way there. 😀
 
Hi, this question is for those who've already interviewed or currently live close, or around Harrogate- Did you have problems using your cell phones or GPS during your trip? If so, which carrier gets the best reception? Also, how long does it take from Knoxville to Harrogate? Any other tips would be appreciated.

I used GPS on my Iphone (telenav is the name of the program) all the way from Chattanooga TN to LMU. No drops in coverage. I will admit the 2g service that you will get on campus is essentially useless as far as data goes. However AT&T and Verizon will give you coverage on campus. Verizon will probably get you the best coverage overall in the area.....no iphone though :-( When you are going toward the tunnel you will lose coverage with AT&T. It takes about 45min-1hr to get to LMU from the knox. Hope this helps.

This probably wouldn't work to be honest with you. It's not big enough for 2 people to live in while still having a place to sleep, study and have privacy. I would just go for the one-room and call it a day. Yeah, its kinda small, but if you study at school, then you only sleep in your room and then how cares how big it is anyway.

I am going to answer all 3 of the above posts here. First, yes it is possible to live 30 mins away and still do fine. I think the break is good since you can listen to music or whatever and chill out a bit. It sucks if the weather is kinda sucky though, depending where you live. Plus, once you get the infamous Goljan audio, you can listen to it while driving, if you so wish. As for towns in between LMU and Knoxville, the best, IMO is Tazewell or New Tazewell. Its a 15 minute drive to school and about 30-45 minutes to Knoxville depending which part of the city you're going to. Living in Knoxville isn't all that unreasonable either since you can make the drive in about 45 minutes from LMU. We had a few students who did that everyday and they did fine. Back then, attendance was required everyday, but since that has changed sliightly, you wouldn't have to drive that everyday...so thats a bonus. So yes, that is reasonable too. The thing you have to remember is what you're going to do during clinicals since you will, most likely, have to move.

The problem with Harrogate is you get no 3G coverage, so you can't use the fancy perks on the iphone, crackberry, etc. School does have a wireless internet system you can use with the phones, so that helps. As for signals for making calls, Verizon and AT&T will be the best. See above for times to Knoxville. The fastest way is to take TN-33 into Knoxville, not TN-63.
 
Nascar answered the living in Knoxville question but I just wanted to add my .02 cents worth. I will be attending this fall and will not be living on campus. I have a home, wife and 3 kids and we live on the north east side of Knoxville. (right inside of grainger county) I would suggest Halls for those that have spouses that need jobs in Knoxville. The drive is not bad, it is about 45 mile from my house and back road take about 45 mins to 1 hour. I plan on taking NascarDocs advice and using the commute to listend to lectures or make recordings to study by.
I have to make the best of it because I want to be able to get home and spend a little time with my kids and wife before they hit the sack. Then I will study. Thats the plan anyway....things could change and I will stay open to that.

If you wanted a nice quiet place to live between the two you could try to find something in Caryville, TN. They have a Tennessee state park there which would make for a nice place to study in the warmer months. http://www.state.tn.us/environment/parks/CoveLake/

Tazewell isn't necessarily in between Knoxville and Harrogate for most people. I've always went to the interstate to go from Knoxville to Harrogate on I-75 and from Knoxville to Tazewell on TN-33. Not much difference, really, the interstate is just a lot faster from my experience. It's comparing apples to oranges, though, and doesn't really matter.

Also, check out LaFollette, which is considered a 'micropolitan' area. Probably nothing compared to Tampa but I believe it's probably the largest place between Harrogate and Knoxville. Someone may be able to correct me on that.
 
thanks for the housing advice. I looked at some apartments as a possibility in northeast Knoxville with a driving distance of 54 mi to LMU (down 33 that is). I also tried to find listings in Maynardville and La Follette but couldnt really find anything on the web that had pictures of the complex itself...
