LMU-DCOM Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Is anyone else interviewing on November 2nd?

When you guys were filling out the secondary, did you type all the answers in? If you did, and the boxes weren't big enough to fit, for example, the name of a volunteer organization, did anyone figure out a way to make those boxes bigger? Apparently I'm really bad at computers....

I don't remember the file one you can type into- unless they changed it. I hand wrote mine, but if you handwriting is really bad, you might want to find a way to type it in. Can you copy and paste it into a word document maybe? Sorry I'm not much help lol

Thanks for your help 🙂 I just didn't know if they wanted us to type it in or write it, but the boxes for the responses are kind've small. My handwriting is actually pretty good (I've been told) so I guess I'll just write it in. I know I am late in the process applying so I would hate to get penalized for something dumb like writing it out or typing it! I would absolutely LOVE to get into DCOM. I am from TN but haven't lived there in years, and it would be really nice to be semi-close to my family (my mom lives right outside of Nashville, and my dad outside of Knoxville). Plus, I have heard nothing but good things about it since I started doing research. I'm just hoping my later app doesn't put me out of the running! I'm going to overnight it tomorrow, so hopefully it will get there Tuesday...

p.s. I have been reading your blog lately (in a non-super creepy or stalker-y kind of way) and it is really interesting to read, and has so much information, so thanks!

Hey guys, I interviewed on Monday Oct. 18th and got my acceptance call from the Dean on Wednesday Oct.20th! Very quick turn around time! So excited though, this is my first acceptance! 😀

Congrats! That is a really quick turn around. I didn't know it was that fast.

Any current DCOM students here on SDN going to be at the pizza thing on the night of the 31st?

I really enjoyed the pizza night event I went to before my interview and would recommend those of you with upcoming interviews to go. The LMU OMSII students that were at my pizza night event were very informative and nice! They answered any questions any of us had about the school or the interview process. Overall the whole application/interview process has been great at LMU-DCOM.

I feel like I'm the only guy interviewing on the 2nd.
Weeeiird.

To those of you who interviewed or even current LMU DCOM students what do you like most about the area meaning Harr. Tenn.? Anything special about it that points out to you???

Just as a heads up, it's not usually that fast. It IS fast though- most students get a call right at 10 days if they're accepted, or receive a letter around two weeks after (which CAN still be an acceptance if Dean Stowers just didn't have time to make the calls). I'm not for sure about this, but they might have pressed to get the calls out for last week because the AOA conference is going on right now and TONS of students and faculty are out in San Francisco right now, living it up over fall break.

Any current DCOM students here on SDN going to be at the pizza thing on the night of the 31st?
Hmm, if I think about it, I might try to go...

Check out the link to my blog in my signature. Not the most recent entry, but the one before that, addresses the area and some of my thoughts on it. The basic feedback people usually have is 1. It's beautiful, but 2. It's VERY rural. So pretty much you have to decide if you can handle it for two years. For me it was a welcome escape after city life and for others, it's the only way of life they've ever known, so the adjustment was minimal. I'll put it this way, I've seen a LOT of rural areas that I wouldn't dream of living in, but Harrogate really has a lot of positive features.

Any current students have opinions on the student housing available? I'm looking at the University Inn so I don't have to worry about furnishing a whole apartment. I would love to hear any thoughts!

I second this question 👍

Also, what are the possibilities of leasing a house near the school? I will be bringing my dog and would love to have a yard for her to run around in since she's a whippet. I've also thought about buying a house, except I'm worried about not being able to sell it once I go off to rotations or residency. Any input from current students is very much appreciated! Thanks!

JamesLMT-
I'm planning to go to the pizza night on the 31st- interviewing Nov. 1st as well.

I'll be there as well. You all crashing at the Holiday Inn? I made a reservation yesterday.

Well that is 4 of us so far on SDN that are going to be at the pizza night. Should be fun! Yeah, I'm crashing at the holiday inn.

Sweet. At least we won't have to eat alone. See you all there.

Ok for those who got accepted......did anyone receive the admission packet yet?

I was wondering the same thing. I was accepted Oct. 20 and haven't received anything by mail yet. At least we're all on the same boat.

ok kool. I wasn't sure if I just heard the voice mail by accident. LOL

I was accepted after my oct 4th interview, and all that I have received in the mail so far was the letter telling congratulations and said the deposit is due by dec. 14th. It also said that more info was to come, so I'm assuming once you pay your deposit they'll send out a "packet" with more info.

Congrats on the acceptances!! 👍 Y'all should join the facebook group!

How long did it take for you to get the letter in the mail?

Exactly 2 weeks from my interview date. I interviewed 10/4, the letter was post-marked 10/14 and I received it 10/18

This is from a post I had on this thread earlier this year...hopefully it will help:

"I do live really close to school, but I am not living in the student housing. I am actually closer. I rent a house from a 4th year student, living with my boyfriend a second year student. I recommend going this route, but everyone is different. The student housing is really small. And I mean REALLY small. It's an old hotel room turned into an efficiency apartment. Here are the times I do recommend the student housing...

I DO recommend it if...
-you are very social and want to be able to meet friends with slightly less effort
-you want the perks like the pool, volleyball courts, study rooms and gym
-you don't have a lot of stuff you want to bring with you
-you don't need a separation of space in your living quarters
-you aren't very good with bills and all that...your cost is a flat fee that includes everything and you just pay that each month instead of separate bills
-you're interested in car pooling (lots of people do it this year already)
-you aren't big into cooking and can get by with a small amount of kitchen space

So those are all pros, but for me it just wasn't a feasible or desirable option. I had my boyfriend to take into account and I just needed more space after having furnished an entire apartment myself prior to this. However, on the bright side, I do notice a serious sense of camaraderie between the apartment kids as I call them. A lot of them had immediate bonds with each other before class even started. If you liked dorms and have no reason not to have space, it's a good deal, at least for the first year."

Leasing a house near school is definitely an option. I rent near school and have a decent sized yard for my lab puppy to run around in. If I move out, you should look at it 🙂 I don't know your life situation, but it's definitely one that you want to have more than one person living in and I know there are other houses in the area like it. Housing will start popping up around February and continue to increase exponentially as May and June come around. If you have any other questions feel free to PM me!

Hey everyone, is anyone thinking about renting a house near campus? I am really wanting to just rent a house instead of dealing with the University Inn situation. Not that I have anything against it, but from what I understand, you can have a house and have basically 3-4 people living in one house and the rent shakes out to be only like 200-300 bucks a month plus utilities, as opposed to the much smaller yet more expensive dorm room. I know that the University Inn is more convenient and you only have to pay one check a month (a lump sum), but I would actually prefer to have an actual kitchen instead of a kitchenette (seriously the microwave doubling as a convection oven was kind of a bummer at University Inn haha). I don't mind furnishing my own apartment/house. To be honest, I'd much rather sleep on my own bed instead of another bed provided for me (been there, done that and not a good experience IMO). So with that said, I was wondering if anyone thought about the housing situation and if so, if anyone wanted a roomie. If you are thinking about it, PM me or something because I want to get a head start on it to make sure there actually IS a good place to live. Look forward to hearing from you all! Vince I saw you are looking into houses as well, let me know what you think.

Does anyone know of any places that are available for rent as far as next year when I come to school well we all know it's important but trying to figure something out before school starts...even though I do know it's not until july but it can't hurt to get a heads up! Thanks for any help and insight! Also, any students that are going to be leasing there place please let me know!

Interviewed on Nov 1.

I enjoyed the school. The amount of students you talk to is great! I think we had the chance to talk to... lesse... 2 first years the night before, 2 second years (the class president and vice president) in the morning, 2 first years giving us a tour of the school, and then 2 more second years at lunch. More than any other interview I had. Also, two dinner experiences without the faculty around lets you get the real deal about the school from both 1st years and second years. I really did like the interview process. I can't say how well my interview went... eh.. but you never know. The campus is nice. The dorms are... meh. Overall a great school. By the way, I drove, had my own car, etc. but I went with Bob, the shuttle driver becuase I heard alot about him. He is very interesting, knows every interstate and road, and is a great guy. Random thoughts in random order is random... and not fun to read, sorry, but that is all I am typing right now... at work... boss is talking to our team.... must... listen...

Ok so I understand the enthusiasm, but PLEASE oh PLEASE don't stress about housing yet! You really will do yourself no good because honestly, most of the postings that will go up will be in May or so. It feels so scary to wait that late, I KNOW! But just trust me. I ended up with a house that is pet friendly about 1.5 mi from school- IDEAL for me and actually a semi rare find as far as the pet thing goes. So if I can do it, you can too 🙂 The only people who should even sweat it at all are those that absolutely hands down want pets and those with kids/spouse to think of school wise and job wise.

If you MUST stalk the housing from now until July, just obsessively check dcomdo.com like I used to because that is where most of the postings go up. Also, landlords will advertise on FB either themselves or thru their current tenants. It will all be okay 😛

And James- so sorry I didn't make it to the pizza night. I was BURIED in work that night. Keep me posted on what you decide school wise though!

YOU LIED TO ME... WAAAAAHHHH Just kidding. No worries H. The two students there, Diana and Anastasia, were absolutely awesome! I had so many questions I think I only let Diana eat one piece of pizza. ha ha.

When were you complete? I got the complete e-mail last week. I know it is way too soon to start even thinking about it, but I want to go here really bad! The more I read about the school the more I want to attend. AHHHH. I hate this process.

The process is a long one but totally worth it in the end! It took me 2 years to get into school so believe me, I've been through it all. But keep your head up and stay in contact with the school. That has really helped me throughout the process. Good Luck!!

tick....tick....tick.... Waiting is agony.

Not sure if this question has been asked already, but does anyone know about how many interviews LMU typically gives to fill their 150 person class? Just curious.

The number of applicants has increased this year, I know that much... Also, last years class they admitted 163 students.

AL 4 (2%)
All Others 73 (46%)

Hahahaha while most of those stats will probably remain pretty consistent, the male to female ratio sure didn't in our class!!

We have 67% males, 33% females. It's pretty ridiculous lol. Should be interesting to see how the c/o 2015 looks.

And james- you got two excellent students at your pizza night! Glad to hear you had a good experience with them 🙂

Oh and in just in case people are worried about where they're from, off the top of my head I have classmates from:
TN, KY, VA, NC, SC, GA, FL, AR, AL, MS, TX, NE, KS, MI, MN, IN, OH, WA, CA, UT, CO, AZ, NY, NJ, IL, IA, WI, the list goes on...even Canada!

My point? Don't give up if you're not from Appalachia (apple atcha, for those who end up here and aren't from here 🙂). They take people from all over!

wow, it's nice to see students from all over; so with students from different parts of the country, I am assuming many of them would like to move back home for residency. I was told that LMU gives you about 6 months to do a rotation at any hospital you want in the country? Is this true? How difficult is it to set up? Are the options more limited than they seem?

If any current students want to chime in, please do.

I don't think I noticed you mention it before. Did you get an acceptance?

for those who was just accepted how long did it take you after the interview to hear from the dean that you was accepted

As of right now this is how our rotations go:
3rd year:
Six 4-week rotations at a Core site. These are set up by DCOM and occur at one of many CORE hospitals (http://www.lmunet.edu/dcom/academics/sites.shtml). They are OB/GYN, Peds, IM, IM, Gen Surg, Psych. You are scheduled as CORE 1st or CORE 2nd, 1/2 of the class in each. On the 6 months that are not your CORE, you have 2 selectives, 2 electives, 1 Family Med (DCOM set up near your CORE site), and 1 Vacation. Selectives (http://www.lmunet.edu/dcom/academics/clinical_rotation_descriptions.shtml#selectives)are found on our "Rotations List" and Electives can be anywhere in the US you want to set it up (not hard to set up).

4th year: you are required to do Emergency Medicine at your CORE site and 2 months of Community Hospital (near your CORE site). The rest are selectives and electives.

Nuff said, pass 1st and 2nd year and the boards first, our rotation sites are SOLID you do not have to worry about getting clinical experience.

so basically, all core and selective rotations must be done at the hospitals that DCOM is affiliated with and all electives can be done where you want to do them?

How many months total do you get to do electives? and are they spread out over 3rd and 4th year or can you do them all in a row during 3rd year or all in a row during 4th year?

That is about the best explanation I've heard form a current student about rotations. I was SO confused about them before I started here lol. The only thing I'm thinking got left out is the mention of the required "Rural medicine" rotation during third year that is in either FM or IM...am i correct on this or have they nixed that requirement?

so basically, all core and selective rotations must be done at the hospitals that DCOM is affiliated with and all electives can be done where you want to do them?

As far as I understand, selectives are with affiliated hospitals, but electives don't have to be. If any other students (3rd and 4th year students??) know differently, please correct me! In the clinical sciences section on the webpage it says "Third and fourth year Selective Physician Rotations are sites designated by the Office of Clinical Sciences" but it also has this exact same sentence in the "Electives" paragraph (despite the fact that electives are NOT selectives lol. Confused yet?

Based on my simple calculations, there are 7 required months in 3rd year, and 4 in 4th year, with the rest being selectives/electives. With some upcoming changes (starting rotations slightly later- August instead of July I believe), this might make things interesting, but who knows what set up there will be by the time you're here honestly. If I'm counting right though, that leaves 2 selectives/electives in 3rd year (assuming you take your vacation and PLEASE, oh PLEASE, take your vacation time!! lol), and 5 in the 4th year.

If i understand all of this correctly, like the student above said, you either get CORE 1st or 2nd third year. That means you either get electives/selectives during the opposite semester. Same deal applies with 4th year. So no, you can't do them all in a row during one year, they are mixed in with required stuff.

Does all of this help?

Selectives arent necessarily "affliated hospitals", they are just specific preceptors (there are tons across the country so far and the list is growing). The specific statement for selectives is "All physicians will be approved clinical/adjunct faculty of the College of Osteopathic Medicine’s Office of Clinical Sciences." Electives are anywhere.

You essentially get a schedule, with required rotations set in stone on specific months. In the other months you may move your vacation, selectives, and electives around. You can do any permutation of the selectives electives and vacation.

So just to ask once again (it may have already been answered already, sorry!) but is the CORE site selected by DCOM only? Or do we have a say in where we want to go do our CORE? The reason I ask is because I'm from Memphis, want to practice in Memphis, and one of the CORE sites is at Methodist Healthcare in Memphis, so obviously I would LOVE to gain experience there. Just thought I'd ask. Thanks in advance for all the help.
