Meharry Masters of Health Science Program 2020

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
The GPA and MCAT gets your foot in the door, but then after that they look at the application as a whole. They dont accept anybody that they dont think can make it in the school. So if you have like, a 480 MCAT and you seem to be a decent student do well in classes, and have a very well put together application. I think that they would be more inclined to accept you into MHS to give you a chance to get the 503 needed and continue to excel in classes. Obviously, I’m not on the admissions board so dont stake too much on this, but I do know that there were plenty of past MHS people who had a lower MCAT score, and they went through MHS, got the score they needed and went on to med school.

As far as specifics that the admissions committee looks for, I do not know What things may stand out to them the most. I would just say be your authentic self and let that show through your application and eventual interview date.
Thank you! I know the current conditions of the COVID-19 are occurring, but when do they normally send out interview invites or when was your interview invite sent?

Does anyone know when we should expect a decision?

I don't think they interview for this program
Oh ok. I looked at past threads from 2016 and up and some people said they interviewed for the program. However, things are probably different, especially with COVID-19. Believing God for the best overall 🙂

Grizzlysmiles discussed the changes to the interview/admissions process for this cycle at the beginning of this thread, which is a little different than what they’ve done in the past.

The tornado that recently hit Nashville + the COVID-19 pandemic will probably change the timetable a little bit, but to give y’all a sense of what the process was like for us last year: I was rejected from the SOM in mid-March and received an invitation to apply to MHS a week later. I submitted the application on April 1 and was accepted towards the beginning of June. Most of my classmates that were waitlisted received their MHS acceptances in late June/early July.

Update. I was informed that my app was sent to admissions committee. I don’t believe there will be an interview. Has anyone else receive emails recently?

Not yet. I hope I get some correspondence soon. What exactly did the email say? I hope you get accepted 🙂

Pretty much the same email.

With everything in limbo as it is, if we have already applied to the MD program but haven't heard anything back is there any real point in applying here with a new app or am I to assume that they'll use our MD app if they really wanted to extend an invitation?

Can you say exactly what the email said? I’m over here checking my email every ten minutes lol

it just said in about two sentences that my app was submitted to and being reviewed by the admissions committee,.

Hello everyone, I recently started following this thread as I was also invited to complete an application to the MHS program. I'm not sure if this question was already asked/answered but...

I was reading in other threads from students who have completed this program in previous years and I see that the Kaplan MCAT prep is during the winter meaning that we will have to take the January MCAT, correct?
With that being said, Meharry will be the only medical school (along with Howard because they accept January scores as well) that we would be able to apply to due to the fact that most schools only accept the latest MCAT scores from September of the previous year?

No, we did not interview last year. Only people who had interviews were the dents but their interviews were pre-rejection

Hey All!

I’m currently in the MHS program and am more than happy to answer any questions that you all might have.

Wishing you all the best.

Being in the MHS program, how hard is it to achieve both 3.5 GPA and the required MCAT score?

Hey!

@callmedoctr0504 is a great resource! I am also in the MHS program! We are both on the Pre-Med track. I know a lot of you are waiting on answers. We are waiting ourselves to find out about interviews for this coming matriculation so try to be patient but if there is anything you guys want to know about the current program we can definitely help! Major things to know is there were 93 of us at the start of the program. 16 credit hours in the fall and 14 in the spring. We as med students have to have a minimum 3.5 and the MCAT score went up to 503 for us this year, so plan on it to increase 2 points for next year.

Stay Safe!

Would you say that the program really helped to boost your MCAT score above 500 or the required score, even if it was practice exams?
The program definitely helps a lot with content and you also pay for a Kaplan class you have to take over your winter break.

Thank you! What about how to answer the questions or trends to look for when taking the test? I think that’s my biggest thing right now.

Are we expected to send new letters of recommendation? I was invited to the program last week (still haven’t heard anything about the MD program & I was complete in September). I’m running out of options (and time) to meet the priority consideration deadline since I haven’t been able to reach my recommenders in less than a week & Interfolio doesn’t seem to be an option....

From what I have seen in last year thread, if you want to use the letters from your AMCAS app you can write your recommenders information and in the email you can put the admission email. Since they require two different emails you might want to find another email associated to their program.

Hey. I’ve applied, how did everyone go about sending their MCAT scores?

I have so many questions! So please bear with me you guys.
1. What is the real value in attending this program, I got sent the invite about 2 weeks ago and am really interested in but would appreciate a little more information about what the program entails (i.e.,expectations, courses, research, externships etc)? There really isn't much information about it on their website :/
2. How is the course load for the semesters (I saw someone say 16 credit hours in the fall so I am assuming that means 4 classes)?
3. Do we have to pay for the MCAT course separately? How are we meant to balance a separate course with a full courseload for the semester?
4. What type of MCAT preparation are they offering? Is it embedded into the program?
5. How new is this program and is it accredited like the MSPH one?

(this is one for anyone who has an answer)
6. What are some other resources/scholarships one can use to help with tuition? When I emailed someone from the department they told me the only way was to take out laons which I would like to avoid.

I'm just an eager student who wants to know they're getting in to. Thanks for all the responses in advance!!!!

1)Great bridge into the workload for med school and info for MCAT (in short)
2) 4 classes each semester. 16 credits, then 14 credits
3) it's included in the tuition for the fall
4)Kaplan course during the winter break. Also learn some of the content during the fall semester
5) it's been around for good minute. There are forums for the program on here that date back to 2012. It's been around a lot longer than that but I forget exactly when it was created. The Handbook and Policy for the program is actually on the Meharry website. Just do a quick search.
6)Federal Grad Loans which is what just about everyone does besides those who have parents who could afford it.

how is housing situated for grad students?
Some live off, some live on. 3 different apartments, all different prices. Depends on availability and preference. There's an online application you'd have to complete and email to housing. (We did this well before we got accepted). Although, i don't know how it will be for yall given covid19.

We kinda had some challenges with on campus housing which eventually got situated. Peep last year's thread and you'll see what I mean lol.

Hi everyone ! I just received my invite to the MHS program yesterday, and I completed the application last night. Does anyone have any advice or insight into the program. I applied to Meharry last June, received a secondary in December, and yesterday was the first day I received any communication from them lol.

I did not get an invitation either, I just applied on the website. I just spoke to the Office of the Dean and was told the application is open and that some students who apply to med/dental school (and did not get in) are invited to apply to the MHS program. I would honestly think that if it was invitation only, the application would not be open to the public like it is.

Hey! How does applying into Med school go with this program? Is there guaranteed acceptance/interview? Most matriculates straight into med school?

There are certain requirements for the interview that do change each year. I'd advise you look up the handbook for more details regarding the program (it's like 60 pages.) Our handbook is practically our holy grail, they tell us often to go back to it to review the requirements. I don't have the stats for matriculation-def a question for admin.

You’d apply again like you normally would and also do the supplemental. If you keep the required GPA and get the required test score on time then you’ll most likely get an interview unless you’re just a terrible person. Dents interviewed before the program so they didn’t have to again. Meds however interviewed in April. Another thing, we had to take our tests by January 20th this year. Any test after the given date doesn’t guarantee an expedited review of your application and could get you put on the waitlist with all the other 1,000s of applicants

Im not understanding what you mean by, "...in the email you can put the admission email." Could you please further explain how to use the AMCAS letters of recommendations for the Health Sciences Application? I hope I'm not having a slow moment lol

Write the recommender's name and in the email space write the Admissions email address because they have it on file with your med school application.

I emailed the person in charge of the program and she told me the admission's commitee won't do that which really confused me becuase i know so many people on here and on the forum from last year said that's what they did. Granted I emailed the admissions committee and haven't heard a response from them. I just went ahead and asked for 2 new recommenders just so I don't delay my application anymore.

Today, I received an e-mail from Meharry (probably was an automatic e-mail) saying that they have received my online recommendation from one of my professors. I found that to be strange b/c when I was doing my application for the program, the application said that I have a waived status for my online letters of recommendation. Did anyone else have a "Waive Status: YES" for their online letters of recommendation? I also called admissions to see why I have a waive status of yes, but one of my professors completed the online recommendation. Admissions did not answer. Their voicemail said that they were working from home and to email [email protected]. Is anyone else having this issue?

I believe the "waive status" refers to you waiving the right to view the recommendation letter they sent.

Does anyone have the link to this program? I’ve been searching to apply for it and can’t find it. Thanks!
